Wednesday scent of the day 11/18

Posted by Robin on 18 November 2020 232 Comments

It's Hump Day! Birthdays: Johnny Mercer, Alan Shephard, Margaret Atwood, Wilma Mankiller. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm still messing around in the bowl of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz samples. Today, a new one I have not announced yet: Adrenaline and Scorched Earth {an isolation / meditation experience}. Despite the scary name, this is a mild, not-too-sweet cowboy coffee + dirt gourmand, and I'm very tempted by the (affordable) 10 ml roller, but I do hate rollers.

Reminder: on 11/20, for Bo Derek's birthday, wear a perfume that you would rate an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Chuck wagon of the Ole Southwest, plenty of meat, potatoes, frijoles and coffee about to be consumed [cropped] by Boston Public Library at flickr; some rights reserved.

Good morning everyone! My SOTD is Ambre by Reminiscence – notes are Patchouli, Sandalwood, Guaiac Wood, Cedar, Ambergris, Benzoin, French labdanum, Vanilla and Musk. I adore this perfume, so cozy and warm. Sadly, I think this perfume line is no longer. I can’t find their bottles for sale anywhere. I was hoping to replace my bottle of the patchouli EDP.
Mr. SmokeyToes’s birthday is Friday (and the anniversary of our first date). For dinner, I’m planning on filet mignon, garlic mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, and a chocolate torte for dessert. No calories in this meal!
Headed out for a walk now, everyone have a wonderful day!

That’s a shame about Reminiscence. I noticed that it was getting scarce on Amazon last year, when I toyed with getting the Patchouli EdP.

I’ve tried about 5 of Reminiscence’s perfumes, and their Patchouli was the only one that clicked with me. But my sample has lasted for a few years now. Thanks for the heads-up on Perfume.com!

Well, Hump Day is here again. Yesterday was my day to simply plod through – my otherwise-adorable pooch ate a glove at the park. Several hours and many $$$ later, he came home healthy after an endoscopy. He’s wearing a muzzle at the park after this! 🤨

SotD is SL Vetiver Oriental. This is one of my most comforting scents, and at certain times of the year -like now- I find it indispensable.

My poor pup got kennel cough from the dog park (yes, he was vaccinated 11 months ago, apparently worn off already). He was so sick two weeks ago and we had to take him to the emergency vet since it showed up with a vengeance on a Sunday. Quite pricey. Hope yours recovers just fine!

Robin, your Adrenaline and Scorched Earth must be pretty new – I was looking at Dawn’s isolation/meditation fragrances only recently and didn’t see it. irisjasmine, it is rare a day goes by that I don’t feel like that for at least a minute. On a very good day that’s all it is, but for sure there are days it eats up more time. It’s hard to run around counting blessings all the time.

I just bought a FB of Iris Prima after enjoying my mini so much. Cyber hugs to you — I think we’re all so weary of this strange new life. I don’t mind at all working from home, I kind of love it actually, but I feel very swamped with new demands and expectations that have been added to the already very long list. For the first time ever, I truly enjoyed seeing Christmas decorations and stuff in stores starting even before Halloween. Usually I find that irritating, but I REALLY need some Christmas/holiday spirit right now.

SotD is Narciso White Cube. I’d say it’s an eleven.
Had madtownteen’s parent teacher conferences this morning. My very first zoom calls! Can you believe it? lol. I couldn’t figure out how to do the camera for this first one, oops, but then I got the hang of it. The principal sent out an email last week regarding conferences that really upset me. Well…made me angry really. In it she said that time did not “allow” for every student to have a conference and time slots should be reserved for those students who were “struggling.” If your child was doing well, we should “reflect individually”…..um, unacceptable. This is my (our) third kid to go through high school, so it’s not my first rodeo. Fall conferences were always a way for me to connect with the teacher, find out what they were working on, what was going well and what my kid could improve on. It was also a way for each of us to put a face with the name and showing up let the teacher know that I am invested in my child’s education. I’d like to see a kid who isn’t struggling with this in one way or another! I mean, we are in the middle of a pandemic after all! Sending out an email saying you don’t have time for my kid is insulting and infuriating. I realize the principal has over 2,000 kids to deal with, but I have one, and she is my top priority!😤
Ok, rant over. The conferences went well and her teachers seemed genuinely glad to speak with us.😊 I feel better about things too.

The sun is out today.🌞 My daughter and I might bake some chocolate chip cookies later.

So was it a group call and you got generalized info or were you able to at least have a conversation specific to your daughter?

I, too, would be angry at such a callous no time for your child email!

It was an individual conference between the teacher and us, for each of her classes, so 6 mini conferences just discussing my daughter.
I forwarded the email to my dad who is a retired teacher and he said I had a right to be upset.

I wonder if it was just poor communication on behalf of the principal? In our district, it’s policy for grades 7-8 to only have the spring conference if you want it or if the student is not doing well, but it always sounded welcoming regardless, and this year, they did do this for the fall conference as well. We did have a semi-live back to school night, though. I spoke to our elementary principal this week and the amount of students that are struggling is enormous (they have to do tons of home visits etc.), so maybe they didn’t do a good job in composing that message to parents.

Well, it was definitely poorly worded. Traditionally fall conferences were offered to every student and then spring conferences were on an as needed basis. I have a coworker with a freshman in another high school, same district and that was not the message they got, so it was unique to our high school.

Wow, as a teacher I would be so mad if my principal sent out that email! I find it so helpful to meet everyone’s parents, and I don’t care if they have As. It helps me understand the student better and it helps build relationship capital for the future if the student suddenly does start struggling. Our school spread conferences out over a two week window.

I appreciate you saying that sistine. As a parent I always liked going to the conferences for the same reasons you said. Instead of saying there wasn’t enough time, they should have made the time IMO. Conferences were only offered for 4 hours one day and 8 hours the next. It probably isn’t enough for 2000+ students. Unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures and spreading the conferences out like your school did so that every family had a chance would have been a better solution.

I agree with Sistine! Even when parents come in just to hear some insight on what their excellent student is like in class, I can see how much they value that window on their children’s lives away from home.

I started playing around with our xmas card yesterday (we did a “proper” photo shoot this year, which happens every 10 years at best), and I’m getting a bit bored with the company I usually go for but the other one I like costs way more. Any recommendations besides the usual Shutterfly etc.? Full disclosure: I’m a sucker for metal foil. :)

I’m wearing a combination of Aramis Calligraphy under Calligraphy Rose. I thought of it while wearing OJ Ta’if yesterday. This combo has the same vibe as Ta’if, and it’s definitely working for me.

Only because I sprayed twice with the Calligraphy Saffron, and then twice with the Calligraphy Rose………

Calligraphy Saffron is warm and spicy, and although oud is listed as a base note, I never notice it. It has more amber than oud, I think. Calligraphy Rose definitely has a spicy aspect, but after the initial blast it becomes very jammy. Both have saffron and rose notes. They strike me as milder, westernized versions of middle eastern scents, which I don’t mind at all, because they end up being very wearable. Although they are quite strong out of the gate, they settle down very quickly.

I really like this line from Aramis, a house that usually evokes thoughts of “drugstore,” and “soap on a rope” for me.

SOTD = first real wearing of Fath’s Tempete d’Automne, my new 11 of 10 sandalwood which came in a reasonably priced 15 ml bottle. This is creamy sandalwood. Even after multiple hand washings and slathering on of hand sanitizer, there is lovely sandalwood on the back of my hands. What a winner! This could be a “one bottle on a desert island” perfume. :-) COVID cases are up here at the hospital, and across the state. Ugh. My supervisor is trying to figure out how my office mate and I might be able to work from home full time instead of switching off coming into the hospital. Out in Wyoming, cases are spiking in my little town – my niece is on quarantine because the head nurse for the home health care network tested positive after a big team meeting. Ugh. In other news, my little Legbar hen is laying bright blue eggs, really really blue. I see more of these pretty little birds in my flock come spring. Something to look forward to. My sweater plans have now expanded, I intend to make both the cheerful southwestern pattern cardigan and the sapphire blue and cream dissent collar pullover. :-) Lunch of the day, lovely brisket with baby carrots and kale on the side…I love when it gets cold, and I can justify slow roasting savory dishes in the oven for hours and hours…

I buy chicks from Murray McMurray hatchery – well established place with good strains of basic birds, plus they have a variety of rare and unusual chickens. I bought this Cream Legbar hen chick as part of a random bunch. She is a pretty tidy grey hen with markings on her feathers, and the eggs she lays are bright blue, bluer than robin’s egg blue. A successful experiment. I had some Aracunas who laid green eggs, but they were flighty and excitable creatures who didn’t stick with the flock when I let them out to graze, and made drama in the chicken coop, freaking out when cars came up the driveway and whatnot. This little Legbar girl is gentle, friendly, and causes no drama. I will be getting some sisters for her next spring. If you decide to order something from Murray McMurray, they let you order early and select the time you want chicks delivered. If you want unusual birds, order early, they will run out. I have been trying to get Black Marans, the ones that that lay very dark brown eggs for three years now. :-)
Chickens are another rabbit hole – go to that catalog site at your own risk. Don’t blame me. LOL.

I’m trying to think how they’re making $s because the initial set of five 10mL perfumes and 5 candles was $22 and then $34 a month for one each of a 10mL perfume and a matching candle. The presentation is top notch and the perfumes to-date have been 👍👍👍.

I tried to read the fine print about cancelling partway through the subscription but I actually factored in a sunk cost of $408 +$22. I will only cancel if the monthly subscription price goes up, in which case, I have a right to decline.

        I think it’s worth it.

Correcto! And now I am dealing with a non-functioning heater. I went out and bought a room heater and a personal heater and I may be able to tough it out with just the personal one. We’ll see. The heater person is coming tomorrow morning!

My brother recently picked up another space heater. He wanted to have a backup in case the one he had broke down. So far, no furnace woes for him.

Total bummer to hear that you have them, though.

The house was cool when I got up this morning, so I’m in Dasein Winter Nights, from a sample vial. I’m kind of surprised I like it’s gentle smokiness. Pretty sure this sample will last awhile; the scent is quiet but long lasting.

SOTD was Untitled L’Eau, in a attempt to at least smell fresh… Will go to bed soon to catch up on sleep

    Wednesday!

Am in Philosophy’s Fresh Cream Soft Suede. This is the smoky, suede-y, lightly sweet yet airy vibe that the dupe of 540 was going for, minus the saffron note. This flanker does not seem to be made anymore, which is a shame, because I thought it was a bargain when I bought it. It seems to be on Ebay!

The utterly perfect New York by Parfums de Nicolaï. Even wishing to rate it on a scale of one to ten would be an insult.

“New York’s exquisite balance between resinous, orange, powdery vanilla and salubrious woods shimmers from moment to moment, always comfortable but never slack, always present but never loud.”

Plus your mileage may vary! I think if I would smell them side by side, NY would be a lot drier, if that makes sense to you at all. I haven’t smelled SalA in a long time. My memory is that I wasn’t smitten. I like Sweet Redemption a lot better. And NY isn’t like Sweet Redemption either.

Not sure what to wear, going to gp. Patchouli essential oil?
She’s an amazing dr and I love her, just not going in during covid. Especially with the crazy spike around here.
This is a non-essential, but yearly have to appointment. I’m not worried, minus being told I’m too skinny.

    Perfume note:
Does the Serge Gingerbread(forget the real name) really smell like gingerbread? I’d love to find a perfume to wear with that body butter I bought that smells like gingerbread.
And, no, it isn’t from Serge, it is from Rica, which I am in love with.

    Bundle up, New England folks!

Very nice dinner last night with my friend…heat lamps were on and the food was delicious. Falafel, hummus, cauliflower. Israeli wine. All very yummy. Topped off by a quick run into Trader Joe’s a half hour before closing.

Clean bill of health in eye exam and new prescription. Anyone have experience with getting glasses from Costco?

Combined Angel Muse and Kiss Me Tender today. Cozy and warm.

Trying to pysch myself up to do mine. I’ll have to go to at least 2 different stores, which is not at all appealing right now. On the plus side, Mr. Jalapeno and I are both fine with a pared down Thanksgiving table this year. Neither one of us are interested in a grand production.

Bohemian Spice today which I haven’t worn in forever and good grief it’s sooo good. Just love this one!

While super thankful for the fall temps I am not for the dark afternoon/evenings. It’s already dark by the time I get off work but I managed to motivate myself to work out right after work last night. Not looking good for today though haha! Comfy pjs and possible baking sound better than working out.

SotD was Lolita Lempicka edt. It was a dream, all day it wafted and brought out the different notes until, at the very end, it did the dreaded-because-boring-barbershop thing. Not as much as some scents do so it is still an 8. I changed up when I got home from work with my dear Rochas Mystere. I might wear it on Friday….

    SOTD: SL Iris Silver Mist

I guess I’m more of a Spinal Tap fan and a bit young for Bo Derek, so when I saw this CP I went more with a “this one goes to 11” idea. Iris Silver Mist takes iris to 11.

Not a great day today. Cold, rainy, triple-booked for most of the day (I got my first ever quadruple booking today, for Friday), plus morale at work is in the toilet, for various reasons. Trying to stay positive.

SOTD for Wednesday was Hermes’ Un Jardin Sur La Lagune. I really like it! I got it to go with the rest of my Jardin collection, and as a souvenir of our trip last year to Venice (first time!), and I’ve liked it from the start, but it has really grown on me. I think it’s one of those fragrances that needs time to get acquainted. This late fall weather, with alternating cool nights and warm sunny days (where I live), is perfect for it.
