Monday scent of the day 11/16

Posted by Robin on 16 November 2020 271 Comments

Monday! Again! It's also the International Day for Tolerance. Birthdays: Chinua Achebe, Diana Krall, Lisa Bonet. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Balls…Said the Queen.

Reminder: on 11/20, for Bo Derek's birthday, wear a perfume that you would rate an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Woke up on Deneuve. Yesterday, little after 1 pm, I lost power and it’s still out 19 hours later. I let my electric company have it on Twitter. Got enough water to wash essential parts on my body. I have trace amounts of Deneuve on skin to get me through. Will be taking my phone charger to work because my cellphone is only at 25% with no way of knowing when I will have power.

Yes, good luck! I’ve never smelled Deneuve, but judging by everything I’ve read, I’m sure I would love it. So, I’ll take the liberty of saying, “but you smell great!” 🙂

Happy Monday all! My SOTD is Amazone EDP by Hermes.
We had a wonderful weekend out and hiking, and the Frida exhibit at de Young was so enjoyable. I love heading to museums, so much beauty in the world… And a lot of walking, of course, so I got to break in my new sneakers.
Speaking of, now that caffeine is consumed, my sneakers are on and I’m out the door! Going to try for six miles today. :)

Hi L2SG! The Frida Kahlo exhibit was wonderful! It contained a variety of her artwork, sketches, a few home movies, family photos, paper work from her consultation with a physician at St. Luke’s in SF, personal items like jewelry, makeup, and clothing. I knew she had affairs with men and women, but didn’t know she had an affair with Trotsky. Frida loved and wore Shalimar, Chanel No. 5, and Roger & Gallet’s Jean Marie Farina Extra Vieille, her bottles were part of the exhibit. I embarrassed myself because I pronounced out loud (from across the room, no less), “Oh my G-D, that’s a huge Shalimar bottle!” Mr. SmokeyToes was mortified. Yes, I forgot to use my ‘library voice’…

I enjoyed a fantastic conversation with a young man about perfumes, what colognes he loves wearing (Chanel Blue or oud scents). I mentioned Now Smell This, hopefully, he’ll swing by to visit! He was a very nice young man and it was a wonderful conversation. He probably thought I was a crazy old lady!
We finished the day with take out Indian from Masala Dosa and a nice glass of wine (or three glasses). :)

I’m in an Alkemia sample from their current Autumn Harvest sample set. It’s called An Autumn Wandering. These samples feel more like perfume oil than an alcohol based fragrance and last well on my skin. I have enjoyed the samples from this house, and will probably buy one of the $18.00 5ml extraits.

Well, that is what is strange..is that she is one of my best friends(I thought?) but lives out of town. With covid, travels were postponed. She said we will hang out when she gets into town. She texts me a pic of the Stratosphere to let me know she made here and I got really excited. Then I don’t hear from her and she texts me a few days later to let me know she is leaving town. I know time can go by very fast while in Vegas but we had planned it out for months. It was very hurtful. So not sure if we are “divorcing” but it sure as heck was a flaky thing to do.

Omega, that is really callous behaviour – I am on the mend from the break-up of a long term relationship and have been on such a gourmand streak! My latest is Zara’s Sweet Pastry in Paris. It follows on from a whole row of teeth rotting forerunners…

AnniePerfumes, I guess it depends on the circumstances but I only cut ties with people when they have hurt me on multiple occasions and I realize any future contact will be more of the same. I always check with others whether the hurtful behaviour IS offensive (as opposed to me just being hyper sensitive). It’s much more painful when the person is a family member because realising you will ONLY receive abuse from someone who should support you is even harder.

About to shower and will use my new Shalimar body lotion, followed by the Eau de Cologne.

Con Ed did emergency work on Saturday, which killed our water for awhile. I noticed because when I turned on the bathroom sink, the water was a dark copper-brown. That always seems to happen. That cleared, but we’ve had no hot water in there since then. Kitchen has hot water, just not in bathroom. I tried a few minutes ago, and it seemed to be restored. So…might be safe tk take a shower without freezing.

Sneaking in on a rare Monday post to note my SOTD, Un Reverie Au Jardin (Tauer) and to ask a question–for those of you who wear fragrances during activity (running, yoga, weightlifting, rock climbing, cycling, whatever), what do you reach for and why? I’m thinking about writing a post on a fitness blog I participate in on personal fragrance. . .

That’s the one Tauer that works on me.

I used to wear Le Temps d’Une Fête as my signature in the late 90s. I remember spraying it on for work one morning and then going to the gym that evening. It wafted up like crazy from my sweaty head, which was where I often sprayed it. I think I’d generally tend toward citrusy scents for gym. Not sure why…they just seem fresh and clean.

Cologne-y type things. Like Haute Provence by Nicolai.
Also, for hiking, Bucoliques de Provence. I don’t usually wear perfume specifically for exercise, though, but those would be my out and about scents! (also in the past Cap Neroli, but the family does not like that one). I distinctly remember wearing eau chic by Nicolai for a wine/bike thing a couple of years ago. Have since swapped that away and realized that my biking skills are shameful after years of non use – I used to be glued to the saddle, now I hurt after like a mile…

Thank you for sharing! I agree, in the pre-COVID times, my scent for the gym most days was just the dregs of whatever I’d worn that day.

Sorry about the reduced biking! Our bodies remember, if we give them a chance to get back into things. You could decide to get back into it some day, if you want to. :)

During the spring and summer, I usually did not wear fragrance during cardio or strength training or Pilates- I am a warm person, and generate a lot of heat, so scents would be too intense in the hot days. But during yoga or bodyflow, I liked a good spritz for focus.

Now, I put on scent and exercise later in the day- days are shorter and cooler, and I can exercise and generate heat in a cool room without it being overwhelming.

I’m sorry your pilates studio isn’t understanding about personal fragrance. I always wonder at those requirements–when we all have fragranced shampoos, deodorants, lotions, fabric softeners, etc, etc. I feel like it’s a policy that lacks appropriate nuance.

Marjorie, I would love to read what you write about this – I would be very interested! I find citrus and vetiver to be energising and so I typically wear this to exercise at home. It’s probably a bit strange but I also like wearing a scent when I walk my dog. I enjoy the scent as I go. I don’t go on very long or sweaty walks so I wear anything I’m enjoying for this – HOWEVER – I was doused in Zara’s Sweet Pastry in Paris today and I asked someone I walk with if I smell too sweet and she said ‘yes, for me its too sweet’ SO I really need to be more careful :(

Oh, I’m sorry your walking partner disapproved of your fragrance! That can be awkward. I agree about citrus and vetiver. I find grassy vetiver notes especially “clean” and “fresh” feeling!

I will happily share a link to the blog, whenever I’ve got it written, if Robin doesn’t mind. I’m a regular contributor on a feminist fitness blog, and it would be a change for me to write about frangrance–typically I write about my preferred activities, strength training and running, and about healthy habits and such. But I think there’s lots there (around the topic of personal fragrances) for nonperfumista folks to think about they might not have considered before.

I’ve worn perfume before when exercising, but never really thought too much about it. Most of what I do is solitary, so I don’t have to worry about gassing anyone else out. That said, if I were hiking during the summer, I might not do any perfume to avoid attracting insects.

Last night my uncle passed away at the hospital bed of covid intensive care. He was the ex-husband of my aunt (my dad’s sister) and after they divorced we didn’t have much contact except of some weddings. He already had some health problems before but covid just added ‘a wood to the fire’… In current conditions only closest family will be allowed to attend the funeral.

Generally I’m not having the best day. My work phone broke on Friday and today I met with company IT guy. I got a new phone but I’ll have to pay for the damaged mobile because we don’t have tech insurance which is so annoying…

condolences to you and your family. Sometimes it is harder when the relationship with the family became strained since the chance to heal that strain is lost. Certainly the need to isolate the sick and to forgo the rites to grieve as a community are among the cruelist aspect of this pandemic. I wish you and your family will find some peace.

I am in Iris Torrefie, thanks to Hajusuuri’s split. I like it a lot, but it is too fleeting on me. After one hour it becomes a skin scent and after two hours is gone. I just reapplied again and I keep enjoying it!

Another busy work week ahead for me. I am feeling tired, but I will survive! ☕

Another night of almost no sleep, but I dragged myself to school this morning. Mostly I was just fretting over rising Covid cases, which is such a productive late-night pastime.

Wearing MFK l’eau a la rose, and it’s pretty, quiet background music, a little fruitier than the edp, from what I remember.

It’s ok, all things considered. I do get lonely at times, but that seems only natural, given the circumstances. Fortunately I have a great place to live. Easy access to the city and hiking trails pretty much starting at my doorstep.
Restrictions are not as stringent as in The Netherlands or Belgium, but life is more limited.

Joining the chorus of bad sleepers – I think I need a new pillow after waking up several nights in a row with a headache that pretty much improves when I get up. Now fealing queasy from ibuprofen. Blergh.
But I’m on the CP, randomly: Arquiste Anima Dulcis could be an 11 on the caramel sweet scale! In other CP news, Bo Derek’s scene with an orangutan in a Tarzan movie scarred me for life. :)

Generally not a Macy’s fan since they took over Marshall Field’s, but do recommend their Hotel Collection European white goose down pillows (as long as one isn’t down-averse!) They come in soft, medium & firm. Much more competively priced than Company Store or Cuddledown. Plus, Macy’s is constantly having sales.
Need to try Anima Dulcis one of these days.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have an embarrassing amount of specialty pillows. The current “caviar” one is a layer of camelhair topped by a latex shaped with those curves for your neck and then all enclosed in a bamboo cover. Maybe I need to revert to a plain old down pillow…

I like this cp because I can wear all my favorites this week. Sotd is SL Cedre. Thanks to jalapeno a few years ago, I got a sample and ordered a bottle right away. It’s a beautiful dark tuberose. Sweet but not bubblegumy. Honeyed but not urinous or sickly. A total 11!
I entered a few contests this week. The one I really want to win is free mortgage payments for a year! But I also entered a grocery one and a Tocca one. I’ve never been a contest person, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Lol. Fingers crossed!😀

    In Oeillet Bengale —a favorite

Had the worst sleep last night. The puppy who after 4 months of sleeping in crate no problem decided he wanted out. No idea why. It wasn’t for potty or food.

Around 3 am I gave up and let him sleep on the bed with us and he fell asleep immediately. So strange.

I’m getting him a bigger crate cuz I noticed he slept on bed all stretched out. If any dog owners have advice chime in!

Our puppy came by plane from Seattle (nearest breeder to us) and the breeder told us to put him in bed with us the first night to make up for the air travel. He slept like a champ, I moved into my daughter’s bedroom for the next week or so. We then transitioned him to a crate in our room, which he: 1. tried to eat 2.wriggled out of 3.was really loud in.
I believe we let him out of the crate at night when we generally let him be uncrated when unattended – maybe when he was 8 months old? At any rate, he roams the house at night and during the cold months, he sleeps at the foot of the bed for a few hours (I have strategically placed a large blanket pile on my side so he’s on hubby’s side…..). Lately, he has decided that the best place to start the night snooze is in my daughter’s room, but around 4AM, it’s nice to scratch on the door to get to another room in the house….

the idea of this puppy roaming the house unattended makes me really nervous! He might decide that it’s nicer to poop on my carpet then hold it until morning!

wait until he’s house trained, of course. I think smaller dogs can take a bit longer for that? I think the peeing would be your bigger problem (happens more often). Alright, TMI for a perfume board :) :)

I’m suffering from some very bad shoulder problem that is causing intense pain. I have no idea why. It’s very debilitating as my laundry has built up and I can’t carry much at all. Still in the remnants of Bee which is amazingly long-lasting. I just ordered a FB of Dragonfly from Luckyscent after dithering over whether to buy it or Bee. Bee is beautiful but maybe a bit much for me.

You just got a new computer, didn’t you? Wondering if that and / or your more intense writing is the cause? Also, a bunch of people mentioned issues due to using their iPad.

I did participate in a three-day Zoom conference. Perhaps it’s a repetitive motion stress injury from mouse use, since it’s my right shoulder.

I highly recommend a vertical mouse and also a split keyboard, if new equipment is an option. The split keyboard has really helped my shoulder issues. (Still have issues, but they’re better.)

SOTD = Francesca Bianchi Sticky Fingers

The only one I can wear after trying 90% of her line and I now have a full bottle!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CHqTf8nBdhI/?igshid=w9bbpvbc6udg

In other news, I had a nice walk with a friend yesterday at a park near me. We decided to stop by Cheesecake Factory for a quick drink and BOO HISS – no outside service! Seriously, after more restrictions, you would think that they would accommodate. Nope. So we left.

My family and I decided that we will also just do takeout for Thanksgiving instead of eating in the Season 52 dining room – I am very wary and don’t want to sacrifice having a sit down for potentially catching it. My younger sister is hosting as we don’t know what the weather will be like and she has high ceilings and just got a high efficiency air cleaner; good practice for Christmas! I am responsible for ordering and picking up the food.

We have done “Friendsgiving” the past couple of years, but everyone is hunkered down. Lots of high rink people in that group.

    Monday!

    1) Am in Fresh Cream & the scent of my lavender candle.

    2) We are in a ‘freeze’ here in OR due to spiking COVID levels. I have done a lot of socially distanced attendance at protests and even met up with some girlfriends at the park, sitting six feet away (drinking) but apparently this is not enough. I hope and pray this helps calm things down.

6 feet masked while protesting and while not drinking?

I actually don’t even know what’s safe anymore. The degree of mask wearing compliance was better at the park yesterday than it was several weeks ago when I was at another walking trail.

Much of the spike is due to people thinking the worse is over (for the US, the worse was never over). And given the atmosphere of denial and uncertainty, I feel like many people will die before a vaccine is in place (which is on time for next summer at the earliest)

I also think it’s the easing up of some restrictions. I don’t advocate lockdowns as we are where we are despite them.

As to the vaccine, I believe it will be available sooner but I would not be first in line.

And, masks unless you can be many feet > 6 from others!

A friend in pharma says their vaccine is almost ready in time to beat another competitor, which is supposed to be coming soon.
All I know is there are at least two companies that have vaccines almost developed. Not saying that they are good or approved or whatever stage, but it is good news.
