Thursday scent of the day 10/29

Posted by Robin on 29 October 2020 287 Comments

It's Almost-Friday and National Cat Day. Birthdays: Fanny Brice, Niki de Saint Phalle, Bob Ross. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in the uber-wistful Guerlain Après L’Ondée, just right for a rainy day when you're not quite awake just yet.

Reminder: on 10/30, we're doing Emotionally scented...wear a perfume that gives you a strong emotional response (it makes you laugh, cry, feel sad, or becomes part of your armor to face the world, etc). Suggested by johanob, who gave the example of Guerlain L’Heure Bleue, which makes him feel sad.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

If I’d known it was Niki de Saint Phalle’s birthday I would have worn the fragrance. I am wearing Lolita Lempicka Minuit Noir, from my unused decant bag. I think it is unused because it has too much licorice for me.

    Rain Rain go away
Today I wearing L’Occitane bergamot body cream, picked it up yesterday after my flu shot.
Also trying out a sample of the divine face cream.
I am smelling very good all over.

I would say this scent gives me the feeling on tranquility.

Just finished a book called red white and royal blue. A light, don’t need to use your brain book. Fun.

The lotion I picked up yesterday has shea butter in it also. But its a “whipped lotion”, not sure if that makes sense. Its very light

Hmm..does Shalimar have bergamot in it? Maybe I could layer..
I think this lotion can stand on its own though

I developed a pinprick rash on the right side of my chin and a little bit on the cheeks. I was happy it was not all over but of course wonder why the rash only appeared on certain places. I was lucky I did not start with the eye cream!

Hello everyone 🙂 I’m wearing Imaginary Authors Memoirs of a Trespasser to keep warm on another chilly wet day full of errands. It’s like my own little vanilla campfire and makes me feel warm and cozy.

    Hi all!

Woke up this morning chilly! One of my favorite feelings is being in a warm bed.

I picked Amaranthine today, creamy and seductive without being obvious.

I was just thinking that Duchaufour really the us a curve ball with Timbuktu and the other dry incense woods he helped popularize. He is a master of lush florals! He has so many it would be hard to name but most of the ones that have made it to my collection are interesting, grand florals.

    Anyway, stay safe everyone!

Back at home in rainy and chilly NYC. Quarantining is a good excuse to stay inside.

After many days of Oeillet Bengale, I decided to shop in my cabinet. Wearing Adam Levine, which was bought on a whim and rarely worn. Just cozy enough.

My sister tested positive for COVID and is, according to my nephew, pretty miserable with aches, exhaustion…and, worst of all, nausea. Her husband’s symptoms have been mostly the loss of taste and smell. They’re holed up in their bedroom to protect my nephew, who tested negative and is able to leave food for them outside their door. (His room is downstairs, and he said he basically wears hazmat gear when he’s on the main floor.) Other sister and B-I-L are getting tested today but so far have no symptoms.

On a positive note, our flights home yesterday were stunningly efficient. I’ve gotten so used to cross-country non-stop flights that changing planes always seems an ordeal. But…our take off to final landing was less than 3.5 hours, which is so fast compared to those longer flights.

Agnes hissed at me and hid from us for while, but she came to her senses pretty quickly. All is forgiven. Unfortunately, her middle-of-night talking made sleep difficult for her sitter. Oh well….

    Hi everyone!

I am enjoying a staycation this week. At the moment i am still in sweatpants and a hoodie (its already 3 pm here ?

Not wearing perfume yet, but I will probably wear Sycomore. Happiness in a bottle. ???

I dont post as often here as I used to do but I still try to check in a few times a week. Cause this is still the best perfume community.❤️
I am just tired, my energy levels are not what they used to be. World Politics, covid19, less sunlight and still working from home….all those things are wearing me down. I try to stare less at screens and read more books, and be outside when i have the opportunity.
Luckily I still have a job and my loved ones are still healthy. ?

Well, in my neighborhood, i always spot plenty of folks who consider sweatpants the perfect outfit for doing groceries or even for a visit to a lunchroom. ?

To each their own…. But I dont think you will ever see me go to the supermarket in sweat pants (okay, i did that years ago, when i was not feeling well at all and there was no one around to help me with groceries).

I’m enjoying the conversation about sweat pants! While my mother has always been a dress up person I have always been – in contrast – a dress down one. That being said, I think active wear can look quite chic if done in the right way. Of course I like to think I can’t be bothered and will wear it whichever way I want 😀

Funny story: I lived for a while in a somewhat downmarket area and people would go to the 24 hour grocery shop attached to the gas station in their pyjamas. I looked right down my nose at such behaviour!

        ?
Not too long ago there was this trend here in The Netherlands…some women wore loose fit pants with (often colourful) patterns on it and made from flowy fabric. And i bet some of them came with an elastic waistband as well.

Sometimes I had to look twice…”is she wearing pjs…?” ? But then I saw them in stores..those were designed/sold to wear outside the house.

Showered with Mugler Alien shower gel followed by lots of delicious body cream from the beautiful purple glass box the creams are housed in. I picked mine up at TJ Maxx a while back and the shower gel came with all the great free stuff SAs used to give you when you purchased anything from this house! So we could talk about the jasmine and cashmere and amber but the smell of this fragrance has always reminded of the smell of baby oil and also when you take a new My Little Pony out of the packaging. The plastic has a sweet and pleasing smell. So this divisive fragrance reminds me of very comforting things, the smell I associate with the infancy of my children and their toys. And after the gel and the lotion, no perfume is required! I am decidedly team Mugler. I own and wear Alien, Angel, Womanity and the Cologne.

I like Aura alot. It’s just something I have to be in the mood for. I get mostly vanilla from it on my skin. But with a twist not straight up vanilla. I want to get the edt eventually because it’s like a happier version of Aura, where the edp is darker.

Morning, all. In SDV again. I’m looking for a caramel fragrance (and I know it sounds like an oxymoron but a not too sweet caramel, preferably). Maybe caramel plus woods? What do we think of Kerosene Unknown Pleasures?

Unknown Pleasures is more lemon & vanilla on me. For caramel, I would recommend Xerjoff Lira or Omnia Madera.

Hermessences Santal Massoia perhaps? It‘s a dulce de leche note, which is basically caramel but from South America. It has the usual Hermessence ‚longevity’ if that a problem. (Not for me, I love it).

hi cazaubon, late last night I saw your comment about Dzongkha. I’m not really fond of the current gray bottles L’Artisan is using either.

Are you looking for the old bottle with transparent glass and the gold top shaped like a bolt, or the even older L’Artisan bottle with the tall gold top?

I am looking for anything except the newest bottles – in my collection I have L’Artisan bottles with the most recent gold bolt top, a clear plastic bolt top, and the oldest tall round tops, so any of those would be fine, just don’t think the black tops and smoked glass are suited to the scents.

This CP has thrown me for a loop, but I think I’ve solved it. For whatever reason, I don’t associate perfumes with straightforward emotions, more with places or seasons. Yesterday I stood staring at my perfume drawer, stumped.

Candles, on the other hand…that’s a different story! I was digging my sewing machine out early this morning to make an attempt to take up my kid’s Halloween costume a little bit (bought XS adult cosplay clothes, and they’re a bit big), and I came across my P. F. Candle Sweet Grapefruit candle that I haven’t had out for a while. GRAPEFRUIT! Grapefruit candles make me so happy. I bought a spare of this one early in COVID to make sure I didn’t run out. My holy grail candle for a long time was this amazing Pink Grapefruit Honeysuckle from Fresh back when they were just one store in Boston. They got bigger and discontinued it, but these P. F. Candle ones get closest to it. A little happiness is not hurting me on this grey morning.

I think because so many of my perfumes are tied to memories which are tied to emotions and emotional reponses-positive or negative-it has always been an inseperable thread through my life.Sometimes it’s not the actual perfume but only a certain note or accord that triggers a memory/emotional response. It’s also been mostly comforting though, especially now,to reflect on my life and past experiences and associate it with certain smells or perfumes. The absence of perfume,or the days I chose to not wear perfume are also significant to me in understanding myself better.Lol.Maybe I am just weird, but I cannot seperate perfumes from memory nor emotions.

I get that and think it’s a lovely CP! For some reason I don’t really associate emotions (or they’re complex ones) with the memories, so the perfumes haven’t worked as well for me (unless the emotion is nostalgia, which could work!). Candles, though — I tend to buy those to set a mood so it’s a more direct line for me from candle scent to emotion. And actually, it’s a great excuse for me to burn my candles, which somehow I never get around to lighting! So thanks for that!

Grapefruit scents make me happy, too. 🙂

I make more of an association between flower scents and memories — more exposure to actual floral fragrances than perfumes, I guess. And I have some memory associations from when I used to burn incense pretty regularly. 🙂 I said here a while ago that I associated the scent of clove cigarettes with Goths. Someone else here added their association between regular cigarette smoke and Goths, too. lol

Our local library had a book on cosplay on the “new book” display. 🙂 I was tempted, but it was a good-sized book and I already have lots of books out. I’ll look for it again after I’ve returned some of the other ones.

I could see clove cigarettes and Goths! Regular cigarette smoke makes me think of nights out in Germany in the early ’90s, though. 🙂

A cosplay book would be pretty interesting, I think. I have some friends and relatives who really get into that community, but it’s something I’ve always watched from outside. It does sound like a lovely community, though. My kid is into the new Doctor Who, so cosplay clothes were really the only way to do that as a credible Halloween costume.

I’m still mulling over the CP, but for SotD, out of the vintage stash came Privilege. I’m a big fans of sweet, drugstore classic florals and it is a cheerful scent for a misty autumn day. In other news, I was totally underwhelmed by the changes at Fragrantica. It is all “blow up” and cartoonish or something. But I did think I needed to give it time, and not compare it to the old way.

Thunking my full bottle of Safran Troublant, a scent that makes me feel calm, comfy. It will take a while now to finish another bottle, since most of them have juice to last for a longer time.

Getting the remnants of hurricane Zeta. Rain, rain, and cool weather for the next two days and then a cold front that will freeze us for several days. Where is summer???? ?

Anyway, having a cup of coffee and chicken taquitos. Not the best match, but I am enjoying it!

SOTD = Le Liturgie des Heures, a lovely churchy incense that feels cozy and protective to me. Right now what is on my right hand smells different than what is on my left hand…chilly day, adorable hubby needs to get back up on the roof and caulk a few spots to finish up the roofing job, but it isn’t supposed to rain here for a while, so he is doing other things today.
Ok back to work from home work work work…

Not giving candy out this year. Usually we can go thru 2 Costco-sized bags of candy, and that means a lot of kids. I don’t feel safe doing that, for either the kids’ sake or mine.

    SotD = Avignon

Smells like heaven, or some vague approximation. It’s glorious the way Avignon hits all the right notes.

Last night I had the craziest dream. I was in a church I’d never seen before. There was a crowd of people moving about as if it was the end of a service. Suddenly I felt a presence behind me, so I turned to look as a priest in a tall hat and red cassock brushed past me. He smelled strongly of Avignon.

It was strange and comforting to have a vivid smell present in a dream. Even more oddly, my religious upbringing was boringly barren of religious vestments and incense, so my unconcious self was having a wild, good time in church.

Now I’m definitely in the mood for more Avignon. I’d like to sit in a cloud of it today. 😉

The church my parents picked after moving to Pennsylvania is an Episcopal church with kind of a middling level of formality. I have occasionally been to a High Church service, and liked the pageantry of the incense censer swinging, and the chanting, and so on. But it certainly wasn’t a regular thing for me.

Reminds me of christmas, because I bought it during last year’s holiday season and I guess other people have a christmas connection to it, so that must have seeped into my consciousness! This reminds me that I have to check in with a friend re. Thanksgiving. Our state has come out with very clear holiday socializing guidelines/rules, and so we’ve been starting to plan a little.

From a decant! My earliest strong leather. I ended up with this decant when I mistakenly got in on a UK split on Basenotes (I was more careful afterwards). Nevertheless, it was a nice mistake. When Puredistance comes out with their promotion at some point, I am getting M and Rubikona.

Wearing Fleurs de Citronierre – I’ve leave it to Austenfan to fix my French as the bottle is in the other room! An easy breasy perfume for a breezy day.

Just back from the graveyard and it was littered with condoms and condom packets – ugh. I picked them up (carefully, don’t worry) because no one else would and the foil wrappers and latex would stick around until the next century. Then I picked up about a dozen wine bottles. Ugh, again. But, I also heard a shining cuckoo – just arrived from the Pacific Islands – so there was a silver lining.

LIMES…it has been months since we’ve had limes in our supermarket (literally) but they were there today but cost $50 kg!! All the way from America.

      Lol at Bite me?
Glad the mystery sample is thunked. Do you have a “won’t try again” section of your sample stash or do you use them up even if you don’t care for them?

Oh, I definitely have a side stash of “Won’t Try Again” samples that I usually refer to as the “Give” pile. Someone else might like it…

The first comment that came to mind would have been disemvoweled by Robin, so I typed “Bite me” instead.

DH and I have “inherited” cell phones, too; his is from 2006. DH got a message like that about his, but we just keep using it. Mine is an iphone, and his is an LG flip phone. All we have seen is that sometimes our messages are delayed recently. But phone calls have been going through….we are going to take it to limit. Only if it just….fails….will we give in. We don’t have any dependants, so we can take a chance. 🙂

My phone is a Samsung with a slide-out keyboard. No dependents here, either, but I talk and text a lot with my brother, who lives 2 time zones away. I also don’t have a landline.

I had a similar phone and loved it. I only got a new one when it totally died. My new phone is 4 years old now. I’m really am not interested in getting a new one. The cost is ridiculous.

The only thing that I have had to do is replace the battery twice with my phone. It still works fine. Stupid 5G.

          I adored slide out keyboards.

I started out in JM Myrrh & Tonka Cologne Intense, and applied Santa Eulalia Obscuro later in the day. Not a fan of either, so it’ll be Shalimar after my shower. I think I’ll like that one. ?

Smelling great in Shalimar! I almost wore it today too.

SOTD: No 19 EDT followed by some Safran Troublant later in the day.

Enjoy reading NST as I wind down in the evening, but haven’t been posting much. Feel very boring. Working 10-14 hour days during the week. Upside: I don’t feel guilty indulging my fragrance habit.

Boo on 10-14 hour workdays, I’ve had more of those this fall than I care to count. At least you smell wonderful! What’s wearing me down at work is that I haven’t been able to use many vacation days, there’s just too much that has to get done. Looking forward to two straight weeks off in December. I hope you get a break soon.

I was going to wear Chanel No. 5 for the CP, as it brings back many memories of my late mother, but some of those are melancholy memories of her last months (“My Mother’s Last Perfume”), and I don’t want to feel melancholy today; the weather and the plumbing repair estimate we just got are gloomy enough! So my SOTD will be one with happy memories, Anne Klein 2 (https://scentsandsensibilities.co/2019/10/06/scent-sample-sunday-anne-klein-ii-revisited/). It’s also a cozy, warm floriental, great for the fall. Happy early Halloween, everyone!
