Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, United Nations Day 2020

Posted by Robin on 24 October 2020 321 Comments

We're marking United Nations Day with our same-old-thing open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the top fragrance on your holiday wish list at the moment, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I wore it yesterday! Also very floral with narcissus, rose, and orange blossom. I love it too! So far I just have a sample but I foresee that situation changing.

Robin, your photos this week made me want to get over to CP!

Wearing a fedora today, and added some feathers!

Mr L and I are watching Tehran and Apple TV and really loving it. I heard that the re-did Rebecca on Netflix, and I am afraid to watching because I feel like I would be cheating on Hitchcock.

The new Rebecca got a terrible review from the NYT film critic. Concludes with the line “rated PG-13; Hitchcock was much naughtier.”

I also saw bad reviews, but one of my best friends watched it and said she enjoyed it, and she has read the story it’s based on. Yes, she said, it’s not the Hitchcock version, but it’s incredibly beautiful and the acting is good. Scenes of the Riviera, gorgeous Cornwall mansions, and it’s more romantic. She does love the original too, but I was persuaded enough that I am going to watch it. I visited Cornwall about five years ago and just loved it so much, I’ll watch it for the scenery if nothing else!

I watched the new Rebecca on my iPad in our hotel room last night. I was unimpressed. Kristen Scott Thomas was great. But my overall reaction was meh. It seemed to me like they tried to modernize it or maybe it was they just couldn’t get the feel of the era.

Then again, how do you compete with Laurence Olivier???

I think it rained for almost 48 hours straight and today the sun is out and of course I am at work. This is the first of 9 days in a row. I’ll work my current and my new job this week for a total of 68 hours.? If you never hear from me again, you’ll all know why, lol. Just kidding (I hope!) Have to do it so health insurance doesn’t lapse. That would not be good. Excited to start my new job on Tuesday!

      You smell good.

Curious about your insurance coverage comment and I only have my employer with which to compare. For us, we’re covered through the end of the month as long as you’re employed on the first calendar day of the month. And, if I am not mistaken, there’s a 30-day waiting period for new hires before they are eligible for insurance coverage; the only exception to this is if one is a “new hire” as a result of being part of an acquisition (assuming it’s negotiated and it’s always negotiated in). Based on this construct, unless your employers have different eligibility rules, you may have needed to tide you over with COBRA.

Yes, you are absolutely right about all of that. So, I start my new job on Tuesday so that our new health insurance will kick in Dec 1. My last day at my current job will be Nov 1 so I can carry my current insurance through the entire month. I could have done cobra but that would have been $2000+ for one month and I would rather work an exhausting week than pay that much out of pocket.?

Exactly! I was going to say pretty much the same thing.. honey, ambery incense. What I like about it is it’s not too thick for an incense-centered scent but a little goes a long way. I think a FB would be nuts as a small vial has lasted me for some time now. It’s really gorgeous.

Ah exes…. Can’t live with them, can’t… Nope, that’s it, can’t live with them. ? My sympathies.

I got a hilarious letter this pandemic not from an ex, but from a female friend of said ex, asking if he had lied to her about *our* relationship being strictly platonic at the time – since theirs was not.

A strange thing to follow up on so many years later (near 20) but I suppose sometimes you just want to know the truth. We got to bond over me telling her that yup, he was a lying scumbag and her intuition was correct.

And he still wonders why I don’t talk to him anymore!

I think a fair amount of self-reflecting/stewing over previous life choices is happening with all the extra time people have had sitting around at home this year. I’ve seen quite a few articles and memes about exes reaching out and experienced it myself a few months ago!

Yes this is totally a thing. Childhood friends, exes, the person you had that big fight with that never got resolved . . . Haha. It makes sense and may have some good sides, but I’ve tried to avoid the itch!

Wearing Lampblack this morning. It creates quite a scent bubble around one, doesn’t it? Not that that’s bad – I just wasn’t expecting it to have as much presence as it does.

Hey, great suggestion! My reactions to scent are usually visceral rather than emotional, but perfume-as-armor is definitely part of my repertoire. The usual refuge is Chanel 19, of course, but I can see Lampblack functioning well as a force field. ? ⚔️⚡️?

    SOTD = Jorum Studio Trimerous

I haven’t worn this beauty in a while and I needed something sprayed early on so that when I go to my sister’s place later for my nephew’s birthday celebration, the pretend perfume-phobe brother-in-law cannot say anything.

I posted 5 items in the SplitMeet and I am thinking of a 6th one. Go check them out!

Yesterday at around 4pm, my doorbell rang. I was in a meeting and excused myself as I hardly ever get any doorbell ringers. I looked out the peephole and saw what appeared to be 2 kids in costumes, so I opened the door wondering why they were a week early. Imagine my surprise when I saw 2 Napoleonesque adults and I asked where they’re from. One touched an ID clipped to his shirt but of course he was too far for me to see what it is. I basically said I’m still working and NEVER come back and closed the door. Although I never really heard what he said, I am pretty sure they’re from a company that wants us to switch to some cost-saving pooled energy company – thanks but no thanks – once you’re stuck with them, it would be almost impossible to back-out.

It was! They’ve done this before with different people and I complained to the property management company as they seem to be stalkerish as in I’ve seen an unmarked car idling with the rep inside. The property manager said the police had already been called on it.

I sometimes get these calls from “federal reserve agency” that the law is after me. Because I’m not always cool headed, I stay on the line and then get into it with the “officer”, until he/she inevitably says something unprintable and hangs up…People at the door we don’t get much, and when we do, it’s usually someone who’s fibbing about some charitable cause but looks like they really need the $$ regardless.

Makes me just want to buy perfume to salve the wounds.
Participating in a split, but entertaining the idea of Calling All Angels, for the name and Le Lion. A bunch of unique patchoulis have caught my eye, as well. Every bottle would be a blind buy, but, right now, I don’t care.

        Annie, I’m so sorry ?

A scent to try console yourself is understandable. I’m not familiar with any you mention but my favourite Patchouli scents are Jovoy’s Psychedelic for a deep ambered-sweet Patchouli. I find it very comforting. And Ermegdilno Zegna’s Javanese Patchouli which is cooler, a bit more woody and maybe a little more masculine.

        Sending hugs!

SOTD is Guerlain Iris Torréfié from a sample offered by a nice NM sales associate. I’m not sure when I’ve turned into a Guerlain or an iris fan, but there you have it. I watched Persolaise’s review and was intrigued by the coffee note. To be fair, I am not smelling any coffee but I like the rest. I’m so happy that Hajusuuri is offering a split of this one.

In other news, for Schitt’s Creek fans, the sixth and last season is available on Netflix. I have enjoyed watching all of it.

And a small PSA: Molton Brown is having a F&F event with 25% off on all of their products. Sadly, Rosa Absolute, my favorite of their shower gels does not seem to be available any longer.
I am tempted however by this season’s Christmas offering, Juniper Jazz (in the form of a shower gel). I really liked last year’s special, Bizarre Brandy.

    Happy weekend to all!

Thanks for the well wishes and supportive comments yesterday. I got the promotion! :) I didn’t get to negotiate/haggle too much (my company adheres to whatever behind the scenes rubric they use for years of prior experience, education, etc. to ensure fair hiring practices and, of course, lawsuits ;) ) but I am relieved it is done. Feeling very grateful for my job overall and certainly to get a promotion during these difficult times too.♥️

Gallagher Rosé All Daé today….which is a nice spicy, mulled wine.

I took my 7 year old daughter for her flu shot (already got mine) and she was quite brave. Will be filling out and dropping off my ballot at the library later today. Earlier this week, my daughter watched a Weekly Reader video on the election and voting process for school and the other night before bed she said sweetly and excitingly, “Only 11 more years before I can vote!” I laughed and then my eyes filled with tears.?

If you search just “osynlig” they’ll pull up. Not showing up if you just shop by candles as a category. They don’t have all the scents on the site, but they do have most of them. I’m trying to decide if I should buy a few or wait until Smoked Birch & Juniper shows up.

Ahhh thank you. Dang, it’s a stupid and complex system; I added one of each of the medium sized ones to my cart, but then they said they had “limited stock” of six of them, so now they’ll only let me buy four…? WTF, if there’s limited stock, please give me one of the one’s you’ve got! And when I chose “click & collect,” they only suggested an IKEA that’s several hours away, even though there’s one that’s a 20min drive from me. Grrrr.

It is…sorry I was late getting back here.

Perhaps give it another week because they may not be in stock at all stores yet, but also, as I understand it, not all US Ikea stores are doing Click and Collect at the moment.

Somewhere there must be a list of participating stores but I can’t find it.

            Then also:

            https://www.fastcompany.com/90547486/ikeas-e-commerce-was-already-pretty-bad-during-covid-19-it-absolutely-fell-apart

Having now done 4 Ikea delivery orders since Covid started, I can confirm that they are not doing well. That said, HUGE props and sympathy for all the workers who I am sure are doing their best with a crap system.

Happy Saturday all. My SOTD is vintage Sublime by Patou, in memoriam. Sharing the sad news that LVMH in all their wisdom, is officially discontinuing all Patou fragrances. Link from Fragrantica below.

    https://www.fragrantica.com/news/The-Death-of-Joy-and-Farewell-Jean-Patou-14260.html

I’m taking a (very) drugged and cranky SmokeyToes to the vet. I’ve called ahead to warn them he is not cooperating as a heads up.
At 37 inches and 22 lbs, he’s not fun to deal with…. keep fingers crossed…
I may need a light cocktail when I get home, we’ll see!

I have a friend who used to work as a small animal vet and described the “cat bag” they used for cats. Maybe it’s a consolation that a good number of cats that a vet sees are probably less than cooperative…

SmokeyToes has experienced tummy issues, I won’t get descriptive, it’s unnpleasant.
He already has struvite crystals, so is on special food to address that.
He had to be heavily sedated again when we arrived. We’ll know more once the lab work is in on Tuesday next week.

Thanks for the recipe and I hope ST quickly recovers his dignity after the indignity of a vet visit. Our fierce pocket tiger is very resentful after she get home and growls and hisses while WE are trying to recover from hearing her angry screams fill the office during the exam! But oddly, she always likes to ride in the car.

Yes, ST terrified the vet techs, in an abundance of caution, they sedated him to complete the exam.
He is home and eating, but he is terribly embarrassed and is velcro kitty, very needy and seeking attention.

    SotD = Slowdive

Hmmm, Slowdive is wafting fresh clover flower sweetness alternating with dirrrty sticky honey. Trippy.

Yay for UN Day! Watching flags wave outside the UN HQ is one of my most favorite memories of NYC.

This morning I decided to toss the perfume sample stash. I found Slowdive and some other favorites in a little bag I set aside for further consideration, ahem, a few years ago. Whoops! La Douceur de Siam and Petit Matin caught my nose’s attention (again) in a big way. Not sure if they’re FB worthy, but I can dream.

Robin’s mention of perfume one might want for the holidays made me smile and laugh at myself. I’m coveting a few things, a bottle of laddm tops the list, even though I know the idea of more perfume in this house is nuts.

Perfumed wishes and crazypants dreams to everyone! mwah! :)

Jo Malone Waffle Cone aka honey and crocus. I just love how the bottle looks!
Debating hard about offering splits – would really like Bois d’Ombrie, but maybe I’ll buy it next year in Europe instead, given that it’s a bit cheaper there and I’m not running out of perfume anytime soon :).

I wore St Clair Scents Eve today because I was thinking of her perfumes after wearing Pharaoh’s Passion yesterday for the CP. Eve is one thing I am delighted to wear any day and it’s moving up into my all-time Top 5 I think. Good news–my bank has refunded the large amount of money on the check that was stolen from the post office collection box recently! That’s quite a weight off my shoulders. On the other hand, I got an IRS letter apologizing that they had lost my response to the query they had sent to me last spring. I have to re-do my answer and provide documentation that I have already sent them back in March! Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? I made a simple mistake and ticked the wrong box, and am sure I don’t owe any money. Good. news, I went to a little jewelry shop I like and bought a fun, not expensive gold necklace with little lapis beads. So pretty and it’s just so fun to go in an actual shop. Final note: later on I’m going to make some pasta with a sauce using baby bella mushrooms and fresh tarragon! I can almost taste it already!

Yes, I am among quite a few here in Houston who had this happen when we mailed checks from an outdoor collection box at one particular P.O. here in town. They were fished out and “washed” and someone wrote in other names and cashed them. They were all for multiple thousands of dollars. Mine was the monthly payment for my mom’s assisted living place and I only found out when they called to say they had not received the payment. When I looked at my check online it had been kept the same amount but made out to someone else. I was horrified! Now have filed reports with the P.O. and police as well as my bank.

I know! Usually we don’t see it until maybe December or January. It’s supposed to warm up to 10 by Wednesday so I’m hoping this is just a blip.

Sunday morning. Chilly here, we started a fire. SOTD= Durga, tuberose and uh, more tuberose…I love this stuff. Planting late bulbs in the garden. Roasting baby potatoes in olive oil and garlic for dinner tonight. Planning a calm day, no looking at political situation!

I’m with you in the chill. We have a fireplace we never have used and I really really want to try it this year. I think it would make winter so much cozier. But none of the chimney sweeps I call return my calls – guess everyone is having the same idea!

Yesterday’s SOTD was Tom Ford’s Vert de Fleur from a decant. Beautiful! Our exterior refurbishing continues; we now have a lovely new “eyebrow pergola” over our porte cochere ( its an old house) supporting our large Lady Banks rose. Very happy with how well it came out, especially as I designed it! Now to repair some water-damaged balusters and bead board before total repainting …

Friday, somehow, my mini of LADDM broke. Well, a corner of it did and I managed to find the last of my decant supplies to save 3ml and I ordered more decant supplies. I am currently in URV right now. I am happy that Bath and Body Works released their Evergreen candle, so when Candle Day comes, I can stock up on those.

I think it’s really the design of his bottles in general that are a little more problematic. I also think that his sprays are a little iffy too since I have had one that leaks and there was some evaporation issues.

After a long wait for the library ebook copy to be available, I finally read the first of the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths and I really enjoyed it! Thanks for the recommendation!

SOTD is Bottega Veneta. I got a bottle of this after I sampled Daim Blond, but it wasn’t in the budget. I can recognize similarities between the two, but they smell very different to me. Luckily, my gamble on BV was successful and it is now one of my favorite and most worn perfumes.

Right now I am wearing Eau de hair dye, in the color midnight iris. It’s a blue/black color. It’s my day off today, but I went in for 4 hours this morning. The other day I stopped at Sephora and they had the Black Orchid Parfum for sale, but no tester. I asked if there was a tester, and she showed me the edp and said ” it smells just like this but with less alcohol” sigh… I didn’t argue.
Lot’s of Le Lion talk up above, so I think I will put some on once I rinse my hair.

      That’s hilarious about the SA!

I just bought some dye too for my greys. I decided my salon root touch ups are over priced. My hair is just basic black-brown so I think I can def do a good job myself

If I had a penny for every time a SA or even shop owner has told me the edp smells just like the edt but is stronger and/or projects more…

Even formats that reviewers think smell the same somehow don’t to me. For example – I fell for the roller ball (pearl) of Dior’s Absolutely Blooming. Almost every comment said it smelled identical to the edp. Tried the edp and…just didn’t like it – smelled more floral and somehow blowsy to me ??‍♀️

Worked 8 hours over the weekend, just finished an hour ago and looking forward to being work-free for the rest of the day. I’ve only had maybe 4 days completely off in the last 8 weeks. ?

SsotD = Vanille Galante + Ambre Narguile

Hiya, perfumed weekenders. I’ve got VG on my right arm, AN on my left wrist. It works. I’m playing with my few travel bottles and handful of samples of Hermessences this weekend. I’ve been sniffing two at a time, just for fun. I think there are some gentle layering possibilities

It’s a few minutes after noon, and I’m just surfacing from a very long, deep sleep. I went to bed at about 10:30 last night, woke up at about 6:30 this morning for half an hour, went back to bed thinking, “I’ll just rest a few more minutes.” Oopsies! but it was very satisfying.

That’s more than 12 hours of sleep. I sort of feel like a teenager. I think two things let me sleep so long. There were rain showers here, so no sunshine in my window this morning. And for the first time since March I was home alone in the morning hours, the rest of the family had good reasons to be out of the house very early today.

Also I just feel tired from all the things: life in general, the overarching complexities of this time in the world’s history, gardening and home care yesterday, a lot of extra hours of job work this week requiring me to stare at a laptop screen much much much more than I am used to.

But the family is generally all ok, the house is tidy, and I’ve treated myself to a breakfast of oatmeal with blueberries and brown sugar topped with a fried egg, cooked hard with olive oil.

I’ve visited Postsecret and looked at Leslie Jordan’s Instagram, read about Anthony Hopkins new perfume (wait, what?) here on NST. I think I’ll go back to my perfume cupboard and have another sniffa sniff sniff. One can never have too much orange blossom.

So friends, if you’ve read this far, and you’re having feelings today, I see you. Well, maybe not with my eyes, but I feel you in my heart. Take good care. :)

Been AWOL for a while due to the move. The last two months have been really hard, the last two weeks especially, and I’m knocked out. Finally back in San Diego, but lying low due to a troublesome inner ear issue that is making me feel unwell. Not wearing perfume right now, just scented lotion, but hopefully I can get back on track soon.

Wearing my Aedes scent again, while is working so well in this chilly fall weather. Church, lunch and then a lazy drive on back roads in the area. We will likely just get something from the local market and stay in our room tonight.

Here I am in Wisconsin COVID hotspot and what happens? My sister goes down to visit my other sister in So Cal. After she arrives, her husband starts to feel a bit crummy. But they still visit and have dinner together. He spends next day in bed and they go home a day early. Yep. He tests positive for COVID. Likely my sister has it too. Unclear yet on other sister and her husband. Trying not to worry. My BIL’s case seems mild. His symptoms started five days ago, and he feels better. My sister is congested, has some chest tightness and is tired. Praying she doesn’t get worse.

Hello! Nothing to report perfume-wise lately. I’m still trying to decide what jasmines and scented geraniums I can save. They’ve not yet frozen, though it was pretty cold today compared to the temperatures of the previous week. The jasmine still out on the porch is the hardy jasmine. Planted in the ground, in a sheltered spot, it’s hardy to USDA climate zone 7. We’re in zone 6, and it’s in a pot, but it can take more cold than the other jasmines. The other jasmines and some of the smaller pots of geraniums made it into the house early last week.

I’m still watching too much news, and my mood has been kind of up and down, but I’m okay. Others have it worse. I’m sending *hugs* to those of you who need or want them. :)

    Take care!
