Monday scent of the day 10/12

Posted by Robin on 12 October 2020 187 Comments

Monday again, ready or not. Also, Freethought Day, plus Columbus Day and/or Indigenous Peoples' Day. (Shhh, we're not walking into that political minefield.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in a fragrance I sampled very soon after falling down the rabbit hole, The People of the Labyrinths Luctor et Emergo — still perfect for a rainy Monday morning in October.

Reminder: on 10/16 we're going back to the beginning...revisit a fragrance you tried in your early days as a perfumista. Suggested by springpansy.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SotD is Coco. Haven’t worn this one in awhile.
I seem to be alternating great nights of sleep with horrible ones. Last night was horrible, so tonight should be…great??Luckily I have the day off so I don’t need too much brain power. Our neighbors are having some major yard work done and it is literally shaking our house. Maybe I would rather be at work, lol.

House twins and also lack of sleep twins. I had to work late Sat. night, and was supposed to work early on Sun., but didn’t make it. I didn’t sleep at all after work on Sat. and just had to call in sick. By the time I finally fell asleep last night, I had been awake 36ish hours. Insomnia sucks.

Bad nights are awful! Last night I woke up because of my cat’s snoring! One more night and he’s sleeping on the couch…

It is not common, the way it is for dogs! It usually indicates allergies or some other issue. Both of my cats have snored at some point in their past, though they’ve been very quiet about it, which made it cute rather than annoying 🙂

One of my cats snores, too. Not all the time, though. It is very quiet and quite cute, unlike when Mr. Jalapeno snores.

Same for me on the on again-off again sleep. But especially noticeable Sunday nights. Two Mondays a month we have important meetings that I am in charge of and I don’t look forward to them. Sleep is never good before those Mondays of which one is today!

It’s Thanksgiving here in Canada, and one of the many things I’m thankful for is Mitsouko, so I’m wearing a drop of the EDP (from a decant) — it’s smoother and richer than the EDT, but I don’t enjoy it as much because I love the EDT’s snarly, feral quality. Normally I make a beeline for the extrait or the EDP, but Mitsouko is or course a thing unto itself.

The vintage EDT lasts forever on skin, the current edt lasts an hour or two on skin. I prefer the vintage but if I want to go current formulation, only edp. Yes, Mitsouko is a law unto herself.

My EDT is from I think the late nineties or very early 2000s — that counts as vintage these days! — so it’s still full of oakmoss and extremely durable. I tried the extrait and the EDP a few years ago and found both of them severely underwhelming compared to my beloved EDT. I have enough to last me a lifetime so I don’t have to worry about reformulations, thank goodness.

Happy Monday. I guess I’m not participating in my own poll yet (thanks for including it, Robin!) – although I will later. I forgot and put on a bit of my new Muresque from DSHPerfumes. Wow – I love it. Mure et Musc never quite hit the mark for me (I liked it, but it went a bit aftershave-y as time wore on.) Muresque is a beautiful rich blackberry that includes the leaves and brambles. She calls it ‘dark.’ I don’t find it dark, but rather complex and bright. She mentions a harvest Pinor Noir accord and I get a lot of that – it is, as she says in her description “polished with just enough earthy wildness.” Highly recommended but you need to order before Nov 1 – it’s part of a limited edition series called Heirloom Elixir. (Not affiliated, but I visited Dawn’s studio and chatted with her multiple times while we lived in Colorado. She’s wonderful.)

I know – I’ll add some Mure et Musc on the other arm for fun and that will fill the bill for the cp!

Calling All Angels for me today. Wonderful scent for a coldish, rainy day. Also well suited for a Monday where I can use all the powers from above to help me.

Over the weekend two new donut shops opened up within 10 blocks of me — Dunkin and Krispy Kreme. VERY happy to see businesses open up in NYC but big brands, not so much. It is, however, very likely that I’ll be taking a stroll down to KK every so often 😉

Twins about the cleaning. Pre-pandemic we had a cleaning lady once a week. We justified it by telling ourselves that we both work full time and have two teenaged boys. Now, my husband is the one who will start cleaning when things get too hairy.

    Chanel No. 19 today.

Went shopping at Sephora the other day with Mom. At mine, they are allowing you to handle the testers, and only ask that you put them on the bottom shelf to be sanitized afterwards for the next customer. We could sniff all we wanted to while maintaining distance from other customers.

I bought the 30mL Twilly Eau Poivree and my Mom got Nest Sunkissed Hibiscus, which is a really pretty frangipani. Nest fragrances work for her really well which makes me a little jealous. I’m still looking for one to love because of the really nice bottles.

I also sniffed Eau Premiere for the umpteenth time-I smell it everytime I go to Sephora. I always end up with something else, but I still keep coming back. Someday I will probably get a bottle.

Monday! It is hard to keep track now that I am retired. But I still find myself doing all my weekly chores (laundry etc) on the weekends, lol.

Well it looks like Ebay has once again banned sales of ‘used’ perfumes. Last time, the ban lasted all of 6 days, so maybe they will change the rules again next week, who knows? But I am tired of them. Does anyone have good experience with selling on other platforms?

No scent yet… I think I will try out my new Yosh samples today.

Great question Pixel, as I am about to put a few practically FB’s on line to sell. I hoped to use Ebay.
I have used Mercari to sell a few perfumes and it has worked beautifully. The difference is that you accrue monies that you can spend within this realm not actual cash. They sell many things besides perfume so there is no downside I suppose. I found my Chanel No.19 EdP this way.

Yeah changing the category to Collectibles is a possibility. Dunno about decants.

Ebay has changed all my existing listings from ‘Condition: Used’ to ‘Condition: —‘. But you can’t start a new perfume listing with any condition other than New or New In Box.

Early on in my scent hobby I sought out Caron urn perfumes. Today I am in my chilly on-campus office and wearing some Alpona from the early aughts. It still smells fantastic–a marmalade chypre–with no off notes that I could smell. I have no idea what the current formulation smell like.

Nope–most of my bottles are in a minifridge in my closet. Especially the old stuff. The weather where I live is sub-tropical and I dislike overly air conned rooms. When I was in northwestern Indiana, I left more bottles out on a shelf.

        Do you display your collection?

I chose one of my earlier scent memories with some vintage EL Cinnabar, that I got on the bay cheap. My mother wore this in the early 80ies, but I think this wears me instead of the other way…. Potent stuff anyway, two small sprays and I am still reeking!

I dropped off my ballot on Saturday at the box in front of town hall. It was probably good timing since there was a couple trying hard to open locked doors. I told them to walk down below the street level to get in. I don’t even think town hall is open on the weekends and if they are, only likely to be until noon.

SOTD is Chanel 19 EDP. One of the first FBs acquired after falling fully down the rabbit hole was 19 EDT, and I still remember the SA at the Chanel makeup counter saying, “Ohh, the 19!” and conducting me decorously to the perfume counter. Shortly thereafter, I decided to invest in the EDP, and of course went straight to the perfume counter. They were out of it there, but the very sweet SA snuck over to the makeup counter and found a bottle hiding out there. Score!

Not with the CP today and will have to rummage around to see what qualifies.

? Incense: spicy and powdery. 8 spritzes lasted 5 hours … good enough for me as I’ll be wearing another perfume in a little bit.

I was at the Wegmans liquor store last week. The only regular cashier had on a face shield without a mask. I decided to say something and her response was “I’m not here for much longer” (assuming she meant her shift will be over soon), then I said it doesn’t matter since she is in front of me working, to which she said in Germany, they don’t even wear masks and most just wear a face shield if they’re wearing something. I know there are accommodations but I am curious to know to what extent the accommodation is acceptable for people whose job is face-to-face with the general public, even with the ubiquitous plexiglass shield. ?

At my store, if you are unable to wear a mask, you have the option of wearing the face shield. Only one person chose the shield, and switched to the mask the next day. My state’s mandatory mask mandate is gone now, but stores are still requiring them for entry. Everything that cashier said to you though, really had nothing to do with what you were asking about. Who cares if she was almost done?!

hajusuuri, I switched ophthalmalogists recently in because I felt their office coronavirus procedures were inadequate. The worst was that the aide who did the preparatory interview was wearing one of those masks with vents. I asked her about this and reminded her that I am at risk (as they know) due to age and comorbidities. She said she had asthma so she couldn’t wear a regular mask. I said, I’m sorry, but you can’t be in the (small) room with me. She got a different person to complete the interview. There were other things, like their waiting room was full (I waited out in the corridor) and they hadn’t scheduled people to minimize wait times, so I found another practice with great procedures. It was sad to have to do that after seeing this ophthalmologist for decades, but not worth it.

Good luck in the crowded city!

No sotd yet as we just got home from being away for 4 days. I will join the Chanel No 19 group later after my shower.

I didn’t have a chance to partipate in the weekend poll but agree that for me, yoga and some type of exercise work best for me. I will have to get back into doing boxing workouts regularly. I’ve done yoga off and on for years since I was a kid but it really made more sense when it was explained that the poses are secondary, it’s the slowed-down breathing that makes the difference.

I’m off to repot the rest of my geraniums to bring into the garage for winter.

My local classes emphasized the importance of breathing (more than poses) from the beginning, but I think I spent about a year ignoring them, and then when I finally took it seriously I was like OH, this is why everyone loves yoga. Ha.

This brand was one that I explored fairly early on, but none of the samples really wowed me. Fast forward a few years to a presentation at Fumerie where they were all available for spritzing, and I went home with this one. Love at second sniff! (Might have been the spritz vs. the dab.)

What lovely cabbages! We had a cabbage harvest in spring, maybe in April or May, and I’ve been confused about people talking about how cabbage season is now. What do I know about plants anyway?

I’m in Kulfi Pistachio, having spent the weekend in the Almond and Mango variants. So far, Pistachio is my favorite of the bunch, though I’m not sure it’s strictly better than the classic version.

I feel like I am barely staying abreast of projects at work. I’ve been cherishing weekends more and more, and this past weekend, I ended up working a fair amount. I feel like I ought to claim a day or half day or something this week, but if I take time off, I’m just going to have to work twice as long a different day to make up for it. So.

Also not sure why Columbus vs. Indigenous People’s Day is a political issue. Seems like a clear-cut moral issue to me. I may end up taking some time off of NST as the election draws nearer and passes, as more discussions that should be clear-cut moral issues turn political. (Though I may have to pop back in for the splitmeet, hmm.) If that happens, I am sure you will all know that I am thinking of you with love and am doing my best to keep the world smelling great!

We do not grow cabbage so I don’t know either, but maybe it is like spinach in that you can grow it in spring or fall, just not in hot weather? But certainly it is true that I don’t usually see ornamental cabbage / kale for sale until the fall, probably because it is about the only thing you can put in a pot or urn now that has a chance to make it through the winter, or at least part of the winter.

I am not kidding or only sorta kinda kidding when I say that just about every political issue is a clear cut moral issue to me. There is probably some exception but offhand I can’t think what it is.

Ah! I get that for sure. And that is how I feel about much of politics, too 🙂

I think you’re right about the spinach comparison. As far as I can tell, kale and spinach go super bitter in heat (is that your understanding too?), and perhaps that is true for cabbage, too?

We don’t grow kale, but that is true for spinach for sure. We grow tons of it in the spring then harvest all at once, blanch and freeze.

In other random things, for those of you like myself who are putting off reading The Mirror and the Light for the perfect moment (???), here’s an article on other historical fiction novels that one reviewer liked. Not sure any of these would scratch the itch–although I’ve not read anything by Ford Maddox Ford, so who knows? https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/books/fans-of-hilary-mantels-thomas-cromwell-trilogy-will-want-to-read-these-historical-novels-next/2020/10/10/9ee2657e-0a3f-11eb-859b-f9c27abe638d_story.html

    Hello, lovely NST folks! 🙂

I was with Jalapeno in the thoughts of wanting to stay in a warm bed instead of getting up. I was very glad I didn’t have to go anywhere today. It’s been a quiet day so far, which is good, because I needed one.

I’m still thinking about a sort of fragrance that I’ve been using for some time. If I go back a number of years, I liked a splash of rosewater or a bit of rose-scented oil on my wrists. And I liked burning various incenses. Maybe I’ll put a little bit of an incense fragrance on, in honor of my incense-burning days. 🙂

    Take care and hugs! 🙂

I guess I needed the sleep? It was such a dark day that I turned a nightlight on at 4:00 p.m. Soon it will really be night by 4-something, instead of just dark from clouds and rain. I should plan to start using the light I have that mimics sunlight, only minus the UV rays, in the mornings.

Now at the end of the day it has settled down quite nicely. I’m in Texas, so it’s actually a warmer day to wear Black Orchid but I thought I’d it a try since finding the bottle. Have read this blog for a while and decided to comment.

    Happy Monday!

Late to the game, but wanted to chime in with my SOTD, Ginger Ciao, which smells so frackkin’ nice. It was my last sample, but worth it. Also, wanted to know if anyone has issues smelling their scents thru their masks when they wear one. Happy Monday!

Re: smelling perfume thru a mask. Sometimes I can, and sometimes I can’t. It depends on the mask, and how heavy and/or full-bodied the scent is. Some lighter perfumes are blocked out.

I cannot, for the most part. I think a good mask wouldn’t really let you smell too much. In other words: I wonder if you can smell your perfume trough the mask, if the mask is working the way it should. But – this is an unfounded opinion with zero research to back it up!! 🙂

The less you can smell, the more effective the mask.

I’ve read that this is sort of how medical personnel test the seal of their PPE, by whether they can smell ambient alcohol or something like that.

But even a good cloth mask should cut that way down or eliminate. When I go for walks, I wear a mask when I’m leaving my building and take it off after I’m in a part of the neighborhood where I’m not crossing paths with anyone. Suddenly, I can smell smoke from backyard grills, or flowering shrubs. That’s with my better fitting multilayer masks.

Robin, I wore PotL today too, taking inspiration from you. And it does fit the CP because I tried it very early on in my perfumista days. I didn’t even remember that I swapped away a partial bottle on MUA. I probably bought the bottle on eBay. I sure wish I hadn’t swapped it because now I love it!

And I wish I had bought more of it way back when! I do have a couple of decants that have held up pretty well.

      I also swapped away things I regretted…

Thank you all for the kind welcome! Glad I decided to “delurk” also!

After long day closet cleaning and hot shower, I sprayed on Coco Chanel EDP. Definitely one of my favorites and much better than the Black Orchid.

Not sure what to count as the rabbit hole. Was it when I fell in love with perfume as a teenager via drugstore Coty, Guerlain, and Yardley? Sniffing designer fragrances in department stores and duty free shops? Mail ordering Tabac Blond and En Avion from the Coty fountains in New York after seeing their ads in the Sunday New York Times in the 1990s? Exploring one of the first niche brands, Annick Goutal? Or discovering NST, ebay, the Perfumed Court, and The Guide circa 2009? It’s been more of a life than a rabbit hole. At some point you find you have decades experiences, thousands of books, and hundreds of perfume bottles. ?

I somehow have four different omnias and didn’t realize it. This one is Amethyst. It last long on clothes, they all do. Some Eau de Gaga coming. Reviews are good and it’s super cheap.
