Happy Friday and happy National Comic Book Day! (And a few selected birthdays: William Faulkner, Donald Glover, Glenn Gould, Pedro Almodóvar, plus a quick PSA: the freebiemeet starts tomorrow.) Our community project for today: name a favorite comic book character, and wear the fragrance that suits him or her.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I have a feeling that real comic book people do not include comic strips as "comic books", even if the strips have been collected in books. I'm going with Calvin and Hobbes anyway. I did not pay any attention to the strip during the ten years Bill Watterson was writing it (1985-1995), but once my son learned to read it was one of his favorites, and then I started to read it too, and even now I can pick up one of the books and lose track of time for the next hour or so. So I'm scenting Calvin, who would not wear cologne in a million years, but he probably has that little boy dirt smell. Demeter Dirt would be perfect but if I have any I can't find it, and CB I Hate Perfume Black March is too sad, so I'm in (a precious tiny drop of) CB I Hate Perfume On A Clear Day You Can See Forever. It's not quite right but I do smell awfully good.
Reminder: on 10/2, our subject is On the back roads by the rivers of my memory...do what you like with the lyric from the 1968 song Gentle on My Mind. Suggested by Mossyberry.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
I don’t read comics but I do love graphic novels, so I am loosely participating in today CP with Persepolis by Satrapi
This image https://images.app.goo.gl/LJh6NjCd1WFG4iGR9
Pairing with SOTD Ambre Loup
Fragrance Notes
Clove, spices, Balsam Peru, Labdanum, Vanilla, Agarwood, Gaiac, Cedar
Nice choice! Persepolis is great!
Persepolis is so good! the movie is very good, too. You smell fantastic.
I have never seen the movie, but loved the book
There’s a movie?? Well, I guess now I have something to put on my to-watch list.
It’s animated in a rather distinctive style. I’ve only seen brief clips of it.
Have you read the Graphic Novel I Feel Sick? It was my first foray into the genre.
no, I have never heard of this one.Tell me more
Ambre Loup, perfect weather for this!
If I had wolf comic strip character I’d choose this one.
Happy Friday.
Good idea & choice!
Nice pairing! Ambre Loup is super-good!
I do not read comics either, but I watched the Last Airbender animated series, and several comic books were written for it.
So my pick is Memo Winter Palace for Iroh.
Iroh loves tea (drinking it, making it, he even set up his own tea shop), so of course it has to be a tea scent.
The scent description has references to a dragon, fire, empire and kings, for example: “Winter Palace has freed its emissary, a winged and tenacious dragon king with a trail of fire.” This fits Iroh very well, because he belongs to the royal family of the Fire Nation, is a fire bender and known as the Dragon of the West (he literally breathes fire!). And there is a magnificent dragon on the bottle.
Love this! Avatar is an incredible, incredible show!
Thanks. Yes it is!
Nailed it for the CP!!! Iroh is the best.
Thank you. It is hard for me to pick one favorite character in the show, but I think Iroh is the wisest one.
Can’t say anything about your comic book choice, but you definitely smell great!
Thank you!
‘hand clapping’ Excellent.
Thank you!
Nice paring!
Thanks!
I think comic books originally started with having newspaper comic strips bound together, so those of you who like comic strips can think of it as being faithful to the history. 😀
I don’t know if I’ll figure out something associated with a comic book. I don’t have much brainpower today.
Yesterday evening, after my bath, I smelled like the vanilla coffee scrub that Koyel made for me, and that was very pleasant and soothing. Also, my arms and legs felt very smooth and moisturized. 😀 Thanks, Koyel! I’m still enjoying the scrub and the salts.
Vanilla coffee? That sounds wonderful!
Hooray, I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying those 🙂
Those sound wonderful! And coffee and vanilla?? YUM!
How are you feeling today?
Hi all!
Robin, I was also thinking Calvin and Hobbes! But I went with Jacomo #02, the modeling clay one. You’re right, Calvin probably would smell like dirt but this one reminds me of being a precocious kid playing with clay and talking to my stuffed animals.
Have a great day all!
Ha – I was thinking of wearing that, too. I thought maybe I was the only one who bought this fragrance. Nice to see another mention.
It’s a fun one isn’t it? I wish it lasted so much longer though.
❣️
?
Oh modelling clay is a great idea!
I am not doing the CP, but if I were, I’d be channeling Morticia Addams from the original New Yorker comics. I am wearing L’Ombre Dans L’Eau EDP from a new decant.
You do smell great PriscillaE!
The piercing brightness of DSH Albino for Dagger of Cloak & Dagger
Nice one!
I used to love Asterix and Obelix. These days my favourite comics are by Voutch. You need to understand French for them. Did some groceries in France today. I love, love, love French supermarkets. So it’s nice to have one so close.
SOTD is Mon Exclusif nu Guerlain.
Tired from the move, but I love the place I’m living in.
Yay – moving is so much work and full of emotion – it’s all up from here!
I will start working next Friday, so that is another challenge and the whole reason behind the move.
To be honest, so far things have gone much better than I had feared and or expected. But yes, moving drains energy like nothing else.
I’m happy for you the move is over, and that you are loving your new place.
It’s one of the nicest places I’ve ever lived.
So glad to hear it!
You can’t be gladder than I!
🙂
So nice to be in a new place! Glad that you’re loving it!
Yes, the place although it still needs some unpacking and arranging, books mostly now, but I’ve got loads of those, feels very much like home. And I never used to like apartments.
It’s done! Glad you’re are enjoying your new home.
Yes, I just need to arrange my books and then all the boxes will have been unpacked.
Enjoy your new place!
Thanks, I hope you will enjoy yours as well.
Happy for your happy landing – discovering the local grocery stores is one of my favorite things when traveling!
I can spend hours in French supermarkets. I thoroughly investigated all the different washing liquids, cheeses, chocolate…..
I’m with you on French supermarkets, especially the yogurt aisle.
Enjoy your new home.
I love the dairy aisle but my favourite has to be the cheese department. I will just stand, stare and drool
And, how about French pharmacies and all the lovely skin care! I’m more than a little envious. I’m living vicariously through you, hope you don’t mind!
Not at all, I went to a parapharmacie as well. I only got a vat of Uriage huile lavante. I love pharmacies and I will keep you posted.
Yes! Please do! I’d love to hear about your adventures with French pharmacy. I included a note from Bois de Jasmin blog about French Pharmacies. Avène makes a retinaldehyde (next-generation over-the counter retinol) that is fantastic.
https://boisdejasmin.com/2013/02/what-to-buy-in-paris-french-pharmacy-finds.html
Ahhhh parapharmacie, how I miss it.
Good news to hear that you are settling in your new place!
Yay! Glad you are happy. I was gobsmacked the first time I saw the dairy products aisle in a French supermarket.
I’m in Tam Dao because I mentioned it yesterday.
I’ve had the most vivid and strange dreams for the past couple of nights. It’s been warm enough to sleep with the windows open, all that fresh air must be stimulating my brain, lol. It’s another beautiful sunny day. I have to enjoy it while it lasts because the forecast for next week looks terrible.
I am also taking advantage of keeping the windows open all the time now. We are supposed to be in the 70’s until next Thursday. Then, back to freeze again! Enjoy the next couple of beautiful days! ???
I love when I remember my dreams..even if they are strange, sometimes sensual, sometimes absolutely bizarre! Also sometimes my fathers visits me in my dreams, I love that.
One of my favorite comic book characters is Hopey Glass from Love & Rockets (https://love-n-rockets.fandom.com/wiki/Hopey_Glass). I am wearing Huitieme Art Parfums Myrrhiad in honor of her–licorice and smoky vanilla with myrrh and tea. Hopey would probably be wearing something from BPAL, but I don’t have anything by them at the moment.
Thanks for the link to the wiki, had not heard of this one!
Never heard of this! Cool
Love&Rockets one of my favorites! Nice choice and you smell great!
Not familiar with the book, but I like your perfume. You smell good!
I love that comic book and that choice! I named one of my daughters after her! You smell wonderful.
I’m wearing Tuscan Leather to go with one of my first animated crushes.. Speed Racer. The leather for his gloves and car, and the raspberry note for girlfriend Trixies lips, lol. Go Speed Racer Go!
My daughter sprayed a perfume this morning and it was making me crazy trying to figure out which one it was before I asked her. My first thought was 31 Rue Cambon, then 1932, then Coco Noir. Turns out it was Le Lion which I’ve only worn once, so I didn’t really recognize it. I definitely recognized it as Chanel though. She smelled great for her therapy session today!
Even your daughter is part of the Le Lion craze
Both of you smell wonderful! Good pairing with Speed Racer!
Sometimes I’m haunted by the remaining scent on my clothes trying to figure out what it was. Or even worse! Half-day into crazy meetings I might be struggling with both to remember and recognize what I put on that morning 🙂
You both smell good.
Ditto. When I go through shirts in the hamper I often try to figure out the perfumes I wore..they seemingly smell all the more wonderful as I try piece together what was worn when.
Oh this happens to me once a week – I suspect it is more common for lovers of base notes like me.
I was such a late-comer to Speed Racer. I didn’t see a single minute of it until my early 30’s.
This means you have to get a bottle ?
I’m up early (for me) today because I have my weekly writing class this morning (on-line of course). I am wearing Bat for Batman! It did occur to me last night that it would be fun to find scents for some of the Batman villains like the Penguin or the Joker. Surely there would be some neat matches or choices for them, but I couldn’t come up with one so went with the obvious. Have a good day, people!
It’s only a matter of time before Zoologist comes up with Penguin
HA!
I kind of wonder about that. My good friend who has been to Antarctica says the penguins are very cute but the smell is unbelievably bad!
I can say from personal experience that the penguin exhibits at both the Camden Aquarium in New Jersey and the Bronx Zoo in NYC smell incredibly NASTY! Think poop and rotting fish. ??
I was thinking about the same (my favorite character in Gotham was Penguin), but I haven’t come up with any suitable parings.
Burgess Meredith fangirl here! Penguin was too cool!
My husband, an artist, has created many comics over the years but I’ve never really gotten into them. When we were dating he’d send me cards with the envelope completely covered in comic-like characters and bubble dialog. It was fun to receive these 🙂
The Far Side is probably the only comic that’s held my attention, just a bit.
SOTD: Sycomore edt
Very happy Friday!
So cool – the cards he sent you. Works of art and heart!
THIS!
(very clever too)
🙂
That is so sweet 🙂
How clever! And so very sweet…
That’s some professional-level wooing. Kudos.
I like the Far Side, forgot about that one
Have you saved those?
Oh, indeed. It’s art!
Oh my! That’s amazing!
Love this !
I’m also not a comic book or character person, so I’m mostly old school (like Wonder Woman or Catwoman). Our whole family (Mr. SP, our three – now grown – sons and I) all absolutely loved the Calvin & Hobbes strip/books back in the day. In fact, they make me miss my little boys.
I’m wearing Lyric Woman. I put some of this on last night after my shower and it’s so incredible I had to wear more. (I wore Prada Amber yesterday for Catwoman, but I think she could wear this one, too – it roars, softly). Happy Friday, all.
I gotta bust that one out again soon! You smell good!
Character twin! 🙂
You smell great! I love Lyric.
Calvin and Hobbes was the only comic that held my attention. It’s a pity that Tim Waterson stopped Calvin and Hobbes 25 years ago. Wearing LADDM because it smells like being outside in the fall.
Just replied to you email…sorry I missed it.?
Tim Waterson has said that he stopped doing “Calvin and Hobbes” because he didn’t want his comic strip to jump the shark.
Well Good Morning and Happy FriYAY!!
My scent for today was a no brainer: Wonder Woman is my all time favorite comic hero, so Lush Goddess is OUR scent…
Just keep in mind that you’ve never seen Wonder Woman and me in the same room at the same time…… 🙂 LOL
LOL!
LOL!
You smell great! I just tried my perfume creme. it’s WONDERful – HaHa get it?
I adore their body creams, so luxe.
WONDERful indeed! You speak the truth, without even the lasso of truth to compel you! 🙂
??
Ha! ♥
lol — love it! and great scent pick for this!
“As lovely as Aphrodite – as wise as Athena – with the speed of Mercury and the strength of Hercules…” 😉
Good pick. I considered the scent named Female Christ for Wonder Woman (connections: femininism, divinity), but I think your choice is better.
VC&A Moonlight Patchouli for me today.
I imagine more mature Usagi Tsukino (Moon Princess) from the Sailor Moon manga (and anime) would wear.
Do I get cp points?
You smell fabulous. I vote yes.
A favorite.
Thank you! But colleague at work commented today that this perfume smells like farts. Yikes…
LOL! That’s quite the comment.
What??? NoooooooWay
Seriously? Farts? How rude!
Yes! First time she had such a drastic reaction to my perfume.
Hi SOTD is Angel for the mutant Super Hero Warren Worthington III. In the Marvel Universe, he was an original founder of X Men. I’m wearing the EDP and body oil.
I am so tired, I stayed up late to finish my paper and upon submitting it, I couldn’t find my document, turns out I had two papers similarly named (whoops!).
Once I found the correct one, I submitted it to discover it was submitted 1 minute late. *sigh*
Argh. May today be much better!
will the one minute matter?
I hope not, I’ll find out soon enough. I imagine he’s heard so many “the dog ate my homework” stories, who knows?
I participate in class Zoom discussions, all other submissions have been timely, I’ve scored high on tests. I’m hoping he takes that into context. 🙂 If he asks, I figure the best plan is to take it on the chin and be honest and see where the chips fall.
Sorry to be so whiny, I’m not at my best on a poor night’s sleep.
I don’t think anyone is at their best without good sleep…
I think that instructors who penalize late submissions by a minute, especially now that we are online and people often fact connectivity issues, are unreasonable. Let’s hope yours is the reasonable type – I think chances good! Fingers crossed.
are good. Yikes.
And I was definitely having connectivity issues all day yesterday. I think (hope?) he’ll be reasonable given the circumstances.
We’ve all had our share of Zoom hiccups also. Fingers crossed!!
SmokeyToes Zoom-bombed my class. I was snacking on popcorn shrimp; he was pretty loud in demanding a taste.
It gave everyone a chuckle, especially the professor.
=^.^=
WHO could resist ST????
That’s a perfect plan.
You smell wonderful. Sorry about the submission stress, I still remember the feeling of falling behind though I’ve not had any formal course in many years.
You smell great! I don’t remember the last time I wore Angel, but I still like it a lot.
Let’s hope 1 minute won’t matter. But yes, that’s what usually happens when you need to do something quickly in the last moment. It’s like opening a car in movies when a monster breathes down your neck 😉
YES! AndOr like wearing a white shirt in mobster movies.. You know that guy’s next on the ‘hit’ list.
Or seeing someone in a red shirt show up in a Star Trek episode.
LOL – did you know there is a perfume call “Red Shirt” for the man who lives as if every day was his last?
Nope, but I am not surprised!
No! I had no idea! How genius!
I had better ask my hubby about the red shirt in a Star Trek episode…..
Fingers crossed that one-minute delay in submission will be forgiven. What a frustrating experience!
Ai yi yi yi! How aggravating about that delay!
I am not doing the cp. Wearing Chanel No. 19 EdP, just because….
We had a work staff meeting yesterday and we were informed that only employees who are asking to work directly from the office and those who want to volunteer to be back will be the only ones, for the time being, allowed in the building, starting next month. The rest of the people can keep teleworking until further notice. Occupancy in the building will be at 30% now. I am glad that the return to the office is not mandatory yet. I was so stressed about my imminent return in October. What a relief!
Another warm, sunny and beautiful day here! Ready to take my lunchtime walk!
Happy Friday, everyone! ?
You smell DIVINE.
Thank you! ?
Good news, yay!
I know! So happy about it!
That’s good news! We are working from home at least through December and then I expect we will still be able to choose to be home. We’ll see.
You smell amazing.
Let’s see what the next step is going to be for me! I hope they keep extending the teleworking option at least until next year. Fingers crossed!
No 19 in edp form is wonderful. To my nose, it is the closest thing to Deneuve that I can find.
I also find it close to Deneuve. It is a great alternative to No. 19.
I have a vintage No. 19 mini found early on in my fall down the rabbit hole, when I wasn’t looking ;). Interesting to know that it is like the fabled Deneuve. Thanks, PL67!
Enjoy that vintage mini! It is a treasure!
Glad that worked out for you. Yeah, expecting to hear more about our office in an upcoming town hall. Definitely not taking the lead on this as a co, but I know our CEO prefers in person teams.
In our place they are planning to start bringing few teams together to the office in November. Hope everything goes fine!
Oh yeah, No. 19 is exquisite stuff.
It is!
Woohoo! Relieved for you???
Thank you, Lillyjo! ????
You smell great! And I’m glad you had a good news regarding the office before the weekend: now you can fully enjoy it.
Thank you, Undina! I will have a more relaxing weekend for sure! ?
Great news! Mr. Laila’s company has begun making noises about employees returning to the office sometime in October, which is completely pointless since his total job is done via computer and phone. He’s hoping that doesn’t happen as his, as well as the other employees’, measurable productivity has substantially increased since working from home.
According to our management the productivity working from home has been successful. They are very happy with the results. Noise to come back started for us since August. Information about how the return will take place has been a bit confusing. They are trying their best to keep everyone safe and sometimes plans get changed at the last minute. I definitely do not see a large return happen until next year. I hope the same goes for your husband!
Wow, that was some unexpected good news! Yay!
Very unexpected for everyone, but it was a relief! I think they want to see how the first stage with people eager to return will go and from there they will plan the next step.
That is good news! The university where I work had announced that most staff shouldn’t expect to be back onsite until January, but in my unit, there were rumbles that some of us “should” voluntarily come back to the office starting now. Oh hell no. I immediately shared my concerns with my boss and he assured me that he didn’t expect that from me. I’m actually getting way more stuff done working remotely, because I don’t get all the interruptions and distractions. But some of my colleagues are really into the whole face time thing.
As soon as I was asked if I wanted to volunteer I immediately said I would not go back, unless it was required because I didn’t want to risk my old and ill mom living with me. I have been working at a faster speed since I am home. I hope that is taken into consideration. I hope you are not back to your university before next year.
You smell GREAT and I am glad you don’t have to go back yet. I was listening in on a call with a Latin American country earlier this week and the leader was very careful to say we are “inviting” the employees back rather than “asking” them to come back. Occupancy will be up to no more than 30% of capacity through end of November.
Thanks you!
It looks like that is going to be the approach everywhere, inviting or asking to volunter. Companies don’t want to take any risks with a mandatory come back. Many people are eager to go back. Some feel they function better in the office and others are just sick and tired already to be home. I feel safe at home.
Calvin & Hobbes were my favorite and I have the books to prove it.
SOTD is POTL Luctor et Emergo from a recent split meet.
IMHO ‘People of the labyrinth’ SHOULD be the name of a comic strip, maybe partial credit atleast? This one is a great autumn scent. I am just in the opening and it is delicious.
SOTE will by IO by Chris Rusak as it is named after a super powered Greek Goddess and is overqualified for the CP. This is my homage to WonderWoman.
Peace people.
Luctor et Emergo is perfect for this!! Why didn’t I think of that? 😉
I know that you love it!!thanks again for the split!
How many books do you have?
Every book (compliations mostly) of his work. There are a couple of large ones, so I think 3 in total.
You are right about POTL – I saw my lovely split and searched around in my brain for a comic tie-in with no luck!
I love Calvin & Hobbs, also the Far Side.
When I lived in the US I adored the Far Side.
Tyrannosaurus Mex springs to mind as does the Rural Professional and his Cow phone.
And the Boneless Chicken Ranch …
Happy Friday!!!
Gallagher Wicked Good today from a kind NSTer…this is the only one I have tried from this line but thinking I may order their sample set before the day is done. They just released a new one called Behold, Patchouli which has chocolate too.♥️?
Sample set ordered.???
You didn’t wait long ?
I’m not sure if I’m doing the CP or not, but I’d guess there’s a character out there who fits the bill of Absolute Aphrodisiac, by Initio. Vanilla lovers, unite – this is a rich and smooth vanilla, which manages to come off as nonetheless unique, and very nicely blended (musky base, but without any harshness). I smell gorgeous to myself, so I guess the aphrodisiac is working. 🙂
Maybe Tuxedo Mask, from the Sailor Moon anime/manga series?
Duly noted. I have not smelled this vanilla.
Hey, saw you yesterday on Zoom; I was hiding, as usual. Absolute Aphrodisiac is really good. I ended up getting Side Effect and Rehab. I was going to get Magnetic Blend 7 but boo hiss, I have a giant hive the size of exactly where I sprayed it to be a layer under AA, so that’s a no go
SOTD soon will be Eris Ma Bete, which I suppose is appropriate for She-Hulk. I saw that Tatiana Maslany (from Orphan Black) has been cast for that part in a future Marvel movie. Should be fun!
I have been sampling Eris perfumes all week. I’ve previously shied away from them due to the PR about skank/animalics, but either my nose is broken or they’re really not skanky. Ma Bete is the last one left to sample… wonder if this is the one that’ll send me running for the scrubber, lol.
A fellow She-Hulk fan! Well done. I have a bottle of Eris Night Flower, my favorite from the line.
To be honest, more of a Tatiana Maslany fan. I didn’t even know there *was* a She-Hulk until I saw the notice about her casting. I enjoy watching the Marvel movies but haven’t ever read Marvel comic books.
So do you find the Eris perfumes to be skanky? Or not? I am really puzzled as to why my take is so different than the PR. My skank tolerance is pretty darn low so I thought I’d find these scents overwhelming, but nope.
Eris perfumes are well balanced and well done. I do not find any of them particularly skanky. Perfume PR is sadly, often fiction. I know that Antoine Lie is the nose for this house and I think it is really some of his very best work.
I’m not really into comics, so my choice of a favourite character was quite limited. In the end I decided on Asterix and Obelix and perfume-wise went for Lush’s “Devil’s Nightcap”, which, even if not actually depicting one of Obelix’s menhirs, Lush at least says was inspired by some other kind of megalithic stone. So I suppose that’s close enough 😉
Well worked out!
I’m lazily repeating yesterday’s scent and justification – Asterix, the woods, Bois d’Ombrie, which I’m still enjoying very much. I might see if anyone wants to go in on a split during the splitmeet!
It is such a shame they never did any smaller sizes! I would buy several.
Yay, I’m happy to have introduced you to a new love. BdO is really nice. I tried it once more before passing it on to you and almost kept it. But I have too much perfume, and now I’m extra glad I sent it to you. ?
That’s sometimes the beauty of those little extras – a lot of my loves come from those rather than what I thought I would love, if that makes sense. Very grateful to you!!
My character for today is Enid from Daniel Clowes’ “Ghost World” (which was also made into a movie, and inspired an Aimee Mann song). Turned out to be harder than I thought to pick a scent, and as it’s cleaning day and we were rushing around to get everything put away and tidied up, I didn’t have a lot of time to consider.
I finally went with La Curie, Ossuary. It feels like the sort of name that might fascinate her and it’s a scent that might alienate some people. On the other hand, she might have liked something retro in the right way, but I don’t really have anything like that. She might also try something popular and screechy just to be ironic, but I don’t have much of that in my collection, either. So Ossuary it is.
It works for today, anyway. The monsoon is not letting up, though I hope we’ll have better weather this weekend. It feels like December today.
Had been wondering what Enid might wear, and thought of the ironic/screechy path. She would then have been annoyed if the wrong type of person complimented her…
Yes! Ossuary kind of worked because it feels like it would annoy some people, but attract the right ones.
I love Aimee Mann’s voice.
And I loved Ghost World. One of my favorites…
Yes — both! Love Aimee Mann, and the movie and the graphic novel. 😀
In Labo’s Fleur d’Oranger—forgot I had this decant, and when I saw it, that’s what I felt like wearing. BUT, I did give some thought to the CP this morning and came up with four contenders—less relating to comic books generally, and more to superheroes that I would call on in an emergency 😉 :
Ubar Woman
Supra Floral
Bronze Goddess
Eau de Protection (Oh the Protection!)
In other random perfume news, I am listening to the audiobook of JK Rawlings’ (as Robert Galbraith) latest Cormoran Strike mystery, Troubled Blood during my afternoon walks these days. The murder victim wore Rive Gauche, the detective had a short flirt with Fracas but went back to her regular perfume, which has not been named but to perfume people definitely suggests Diptyque Philosykos, but the character seems more of Jo Malone wearer–so perhaps Wild Fig & Cassis. . . .
Impressive in effort and quantity OF!
In a bit of ELO Rien, as Agent Carter might have worn something like it at a nightclub,
Yes! Nice choice.
You smell stunning, although I don’t know who Agent Carter is.
Approaching the CP – anyone remember Cowboy Bebop? Anime, not comic books, but it is close as I can get today. There is a character, V.T., the Heavy Metal Queen, a long haul space trucker who, we see in one brief scene, has a Tibetan Buddhist deity painted on the outside of her deep space hauler. This is the connection to my SOTD, Memo’s excellent Tiger’s Nest, an energizing, lovely incense fragrance named for an inaccessible but rather famous T. B. monastery perched high in the mountains in Bhutan. Google it and you will recognize the images of the white and red buildings clinging, seemingly precariously, to the side of a mountain…This is exactly what the inside of an industrial warehouse tearing through light years of empty space should smell like… 🙂 And now, I believe adorable hubby and I will have to revisit this series this weekend. If you have not seen this, it is worth checking out, and I think it is pretty available, although we have a set of disks. The music is great, (mostly jazz, not heavy metal, with poetry) and the art and characters and stories are engaging. As IT geeks, A. H. and I take turns channeling Ed… LOL…
I am missing all the references, except your choice reminds me that I want to sniff Tiger’s Nest!
It’s well worth seeking out. My Travel bottle is almost empty, or I would offer you a little…Another thing goes on my definitely replace list!
meredifay, have you ever tried Etro Messe di Minuit? To my nose, it bears a strong resemblance to Tiger’s Nest.
Cowboy Bebop regularly makes lists of “Anime That Everyone Should See” all these years after its release.
My brother and sister-in-law hiked up to Tiger’s Nest last year!
I’m wearing Fiori di Capri today because I consider it a clean, rather soapy scent. Would suit Betty Cooper from the Archie comics, which I read a lot as a kid but honestly don’t remember much.
Seems like some things never change. We’ve been half-watching Emergency! on TV, and many of the episodes include sub-plots about the fights between the hospital medical staff and hospital administrators.
Ah, you smell lovely!
Oh how interesting! I liked that show but remember literally nothing at all about it.
I am joining my fellow She-Hulk fans today in Chanel No. 19 EDP, 8 generous squirts. The divine Hajusuuri sent me a sample and it is beautiful. I shall be checking on eBay for an older bottle.
Happy hunting!
The newer bottles are really good.
Thank you for the advice! A new bottle it can be! I keep forgetting that the price points for Chanel’s mainline perfumes is really very reasonable.
I must admit I like dark and bizar humor comics and didn’t match my perfume. Went for a (very succesful) blind buy which I opened this morning: Penhaligon’s Lavandula. Didn’t need another lavender, but the nose wants what the nose wants…
Happy weekend all of you!
Oh, so happy it worked out! I have a pretty poor record.
Inspired by Robin, I’m wearing Santal Blanc for Tintin. Pencil shavings…
Good pairing!
Perfect!!
SOTD is Dame Duality, from a wonderful NST’ers bonus sample in a split. I chose it in honor of my favorite comic characters’ alter-egos: Clark Kent and Peter Parker! This is the second Dame I’ve tried and I am very pleased, especially that they don’t fade away before lunch time. Happy weekend, and speaking of Peter Parker, which makes me think of the Spiderman movies, and then of Toby Maguire: did anyone else think he and Leo were great in Bas Luhrmann’s take on The Great Gatsby? I think I am going to watch that again this weekend – I just saw it once and it seemed really good at the time.
I’m a big fan of Duality, it’s such a warm and lovely scent, and you’re right, it does last well. Jeffrey Dame does very interesting scents (if you haven’t tried his Black Flower Mexican Vanilla, it’s well worth a sample). I agree, I really like Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby. It was the first time I really saw that Tom Buchanan was a violent, abusive husband, and that Gatsby also had the capacity for violence, which may be what scared Daisy off.
I didn’t think about that – I did watch it again and I think one does have to read the book but the movie raised a lot of the same questions about people’s motives for sure. Leonardo DiCaprio is not appealing to me as a celebrity (that would be Keanu) but as an actor I find him very studied and camera friendly. Toby is just fun to watch no matter what he does IMHO! Thanks for the suggestion, OH! Will check out the Dame – how is he making such good perfumes at such a modest cost??!!
Going with Tintin, first mentioned by Hajusuuri and Robin’s choice of image yesterday, at first thought of la Castafiore but finally it’s Capitaine Haddock with Eau des Baux for evergreen with a tobacco-like impression.
Oh nice! Now you just need the rum 😉
(Although really can’t remember exactly what he drank)
? Ah yes, I didn’t think but you’re right and I think it was his tipple of choice.
I really should pull out my Eau des Baux!
Yes get it now?, it’s the right time for it and honestly so perfect of its kind.
Just a PS that here’s someone’s list of current perfume frags if you like reading such lists–from New York Magazine (also, a not so subtle push to sell the items): https://nymag.com/strategist/article/best-perfume.html
Thanks!
I am having MAJOR bottle envy over the pics at the top of the page!
No participation in the cp,wearing Lush Imogen Rose.Such a pretty perfume,I am on dregs of a 10ml bottle.
Happy Friday!
XO
Beautiful scent!
Waves! Did you find a new place yet?
Waves back!
I am not finding what I’m looking for,but a friend of a friend of a friend referred me to a couple that will be moving next April. And THAT is the place. My preliminary offer is in,pre-agreements done.We wait patiently until then.✌?
Oh good, that’s sorted then and you just have to wait.
SOTD = Dior Addict
? Vanilla, sandalwood, tonka and some flowers in a squat dark blue bottle.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CFkXSBbhEdM/?igshid=1e6zugyit4p5g
The inspiration is The Shadow: mysterious, hypnotic and unexpected, as in what in the world would the juice in a dark blue bottle smell like with the name Addict?
There’s a longer story of how I landed on this association but that will have to wait for another day!
I remember reading my dad’s old pulp novel about The Shadow ages ago. It was published in the late 1930’s or early 1940’s… I don’t remember exactly when.
The Shadow has been rendered in many different publication types !
The only comic books I’ve ever touched or even seen in real life (vs. in someone’s hands on TV) were compilations of Garfield strips (I have more than a dozen of those). But since in Garfield’s universe cat’s perfume smells like tuna (see August 2, 1997 strip here https://garfield.fandom.com/wiki/Garfield,_August_1997_comic_strips), I decided to go with another cat character – Catwoman and pair her with Bengale Rouge (was busy the whole week, so I don’t know if anyone has done this paring before ).
Another excellent pairing!
I did a pairing with Garfield ?
lol, I paired Bengale Rouge with Hobbes, from Calvin & Hobbes.
It’s a lovely rainy blustery day here and I am warm and dry. I’m also trying to ignore the bathroom that is calling to me to clean it. I didn’t read comic books, but my younger brother did, and I remember seeing Richie Rich on his bed. I’m quite bad at subtle matching so I’m going for the obvious–Amouage Gold.
You smell fabulous!
Great pairing!
Wow, totally forgot about Richie Rich! I think I read those too, but can’t remember a thing about them.
SotD = Geisha Vanilla Hinoki
I’m wearing GVH for Doctor Strange, the comic book character or Benedict Cumberbatch’s incarnation, your choice.
The woods+vanilla aura of GVH would suit him perfectly. And Geisha in the name doesn’t mean it’s just for ladies. 😉
Don’t forget – perfume is our superpower, and the world needs heroes more than ever. 🙂 Have a super weekend, NST friends.
Character twins today!
yay! 😀 😀 it’s good to be Strange together!
I love everybody’s pairings today. You guys are a group of resourceful people!
My favorite comic book growing up was Asterix and Obelix. Obelix has the cutest companion, a tiny dog named Idéfix (in the French version of the books). The name is a pun on the French expression “idée fixe” (fixed idea).
So, I’m wearing Le Lion, with which I am currently obsessed.
How’s that for a stretch? ?
Excellent!
Thank you!
Very good!
Thanks!
Glad to hear that you have completed the move, enjoy your new place and have easy access to French goodies ?
I suddenly remembered how upset Idéfix used to get if Obélix accidentally uprooted a tree.
I got 3 different kinds of French cheese today 🙂
? Such a funny pair!
I am so envious of your proximity to French cheeses. You don’t even know…?
Nothing beats a bit of Roquefort or Morbier. I’ve yet to explore Luxembourg cheeses.
I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy some imported Comte. Wow! ?
Oh well done!
Works for me! I also loved Asterix and Obelix as a child.
good choice in book and good choice in scents – approve! 🙂
Idéfix was the name of my first dog. 🙂
Love Calvin and Hobbes! I couldn’t do a thing with the CP this week, not having much familiarity at all with comic book characters. Today I am inadvertently participating in NEXT week’s CP in Dryad, a scent perfect for roaming backroads and gentle daydreaming.
LOVE Dryad!
Early points then!
Pairing Dryad with DC’s Swamp Thing. Swamp Thing, formerly Alec Holland, is an earth elemental and is connected to all plant life on Earth (and in the universe in various stories). He’s a plant life form, no longer human, and he even grows hallucinogenic tubers from his body! He’s a gentle guy, but he will use his enormous power of controlling and manipulating plant life when he needs to. Anyway, I loved reading the Alan Moore era of the comics. I think Dryad is a very grounding and earthy perfume with its overdose of oakmoss.

So did you watch the show? Looks like it got a good response and was cancelled anyway.
Not yet, but good reminder that I should soon. I only finished the comics last month and had been holding out on the show until I’d read them. Really disappointed it only got one season. A friend has watched and highly recommended it.
You never know, they are doing a third season of one of my favorite shows (Borgen) many years later. It might happen!
My favorite X-Men character was always Nightcrawler but I am NOT going about my day wafting the scent of brimstone, love has limits ?
So instead I’m in Rodin Bis.
Thanks everyone for the solidarity and encouragement yesterday. We’re going to get through 2020! But some days/weeks will be blah days/weeks, and that’s okay.
You smelled great today teebear!
Lol I liked comics some when I was a kid, didn’t get hugely into them but enjoyed a few. I did love WW, Super Friends lol and Spiderman but the comic I remember owning several books of was Heathcliff. Lol. He had a glamorous girlfriend named Sonja and I just picture her wearing Chanel…while Le Lion may be more of an obvious choice, I see Sonja in No 5:).
https://heathcliff.fandom.com/wiki/Sonja?mobile-app=false
DH is a huge Heathcliff fan. I am not sure I am getting him, but…
Although I still enjoy reading some comic strips that several of you have mentioned, I was never much of a comic book reader. But, like some of you have said this week, ‘Archie’ was my favorite that I read for many years, and Veronica my favorite character. As some have said, I imagine she would wear what she would see was a sophisticated and sexy scent, probably too old for her young years, yet somehow balanced by her teenage perspective. I easily had several to choose from, and my #1 choice was Molinard Habanita, but its smoky powder would suffocate me on this 80 degree day, as would several others I thought of. So I opted for vintage Givenchy Hot Couture edp (what Fragrantica calls Collection #1). Its fruity opening would appeal to her youth but its beautiful Art Deco bottle and smoky, sexy scent would appeal to her desire for sophistication beyond her years.
The negative emotions some of you have mentioned lately caused by the combination of the isolating Covid-19 restrictions and political unease have interfered with my enjoyment of this week’s incredibly beautiful weather. Trying to be grateful for what I have and what I’ve escaped doesn’t always work. Even my love of nature didn’t soothe my soul as it usually does – it’s so quiet outside, most of the birds have disappeared, even the robins that were everywhere until recently are gone, and the birds that migrate in have not yet arrived. But serendipity (or was it divine intervention?) had me step outside to hang my laundry this morning (yes, I still do that) just in time to hear the distinctive cheery call of the chickadee which I’d not heard for a long while, and I immediately smiled. Then, a short time later, I sat down in a brief rest from chores, glanced out the window and saw 3 hummingbirds gathered at a cat windchime (of all places!) on my front porch and I smiled again and feel much better now. I hope there are moments, even small ones, in your weekend that bring you peace and hope on our long road back to normalcy.
Thank you, Laila. Have a beautiful weekend!
You, too!
Thanks Laila. Here’s a mental image to add to your “happy thoughts”. The other day when I was taking recyclables out, I saw 2 chipmunks playing tag and running across my street. No cars anywhere in sight, so they were safe.
Cute! We have a Chip who lives under our garage and teases my cats relentlessly as they watch his comings and goings from the comfort of our screened porch.
Thank you, Laila! Nothing brings more peace and gratification than the simple, but beautiful moments that Mother Nature gifts to us. I hope you keep enjoying the days ahead!
I will try, thank you. Yes to those simple moments in nature that remind us of the beauty of all life.
Love year-round chickadees! We also have wonderful house wrens that trill and hop around. We have so many white tailed deer that I had to give up on seed feeders, but I keep suet out, and lots of fun cavity nesters cheer us year-round!
I love my chickadees! We were just bemoaning the fact the other day that we hadn’t heard or seen one in a long time so that’s why I was thrilled to hear one today. But the little house wrens are my very favorite. They often nest in a little box right outside my kitchen window and the male sings all day long, I just love it. But they are all gone now, have ‘t heard that cheery song in awhile.
Starting my Saturday morning in a dab of Zoologist Moth. I liked it first time I tried it, then got a completely different impression the second time – I’ll see what the third time brings 🙂
What was your impression the second time around?
I’ve been thinking about Deva and Elisa P lately. I hope that they are OK.
Up far too early this morning. I was awakened by the World’s Most Horrifyingly Efficient Alarm Clock… the sound of a cat getting ready to throw up on wall-to-wall carpeting. Blergh. However, I moved quickly enough that said cat threw up on a much easier to clean surface.
I had several picks for today. These are the ones I did NOT choose:
The Silver Surfer + Gucci Rush
Wonder Woman + vintage Mitsouko EdP
Sabrina, The Teenaged Witch + Lancome Magie or Magie Noir
SOTD = LAdDM + Doctor Strange, Sorceror Supreme. I figure he has to have a stash of incense to go along with the Eye of Agamotto…
I’m glad you’ve chosen what you’ve chosen because now I can wholeheartedly say that you smell great! (Not saying that your other choices weren’t good, but none of those work for me.)
???!
Thank you Undina! I have to admit that I picked LAdDM because that was what I wanted to wear today.
I am seeing Deva’s videos regularly on Instagram, and she is just fine, and the scenery out in Wyoming is spectacular! T-Rex is enjoying walks along tails. They found a lost dog and rescued it and Deva managed to return him to his people, which was a very happy conclusion for everyone!
Should have been, as you guessed, “walks along trails,” though tails are happy and wagging on the trails!
Thanks for the update on Deva!
Good story, Calypso- glad you shared. Hi, Deva!!
They’ve been on my mind as well.
That Sabrina match is perfect!
Thanks lillyjo!
I crossed emails with ElisaP two weeks ago. She is doing fine and taking a break from the perfume world now.
Thanks! Very happy to hear about Elisa P.
I spit out my coffee reading about the alarm clock. I have one of those…and, totally agree!
Sorry about the spit take!
Deva is motoring her way west. I commented on one of ElisaP’s IG posts and she replied – she seems fine.
You smell ?.
Thanks hajusuuri! LAdDM is up there on my FB list.
I had the clever idea of wearing Sonoma Scent Studio’s Nostalgie as a reference a reference to the Nostalgia perfume in Watchmen (Oh, how the ghost of you lingers) but I’d forgotten I used it all up. So I’m wearing vintage Emeraude for vintage Lois Lane.
That’s a good choice! Lois was a working girl and she likely would seek the drug store classics.
I wore vintage Emeraude last night. It’s lovely, but it’s not really me. Wow, does it last, though! I have the tall slender green bottle with the crown-shaped cap; it used to be my mother-in-law’s.
I love C&H too, so I’m scenting Hobbes, with Papillon’s Bengale Rouge! Because Hobbes is cuddly.
Good call.
Had a convo with my son about his favorite comic books and characters. Fun. 🙂 I decided to be super literal and am wearing Bat for Batman. I rarely wear it because it’s so unusual so this gave me a good excuse to to do so.
Went to a cactus nursery in Ventura County today and bought some stuff for my yard. It was beautiful and so much fun! Nice to get out of the house, take a drive, and spend some time outdoors. Happy Friday, you good-smelling folks!
That does sound like fun…I have been stocking up on houseplants for the coming winter, I figure trying to keep them all alive will give me something else to do besides worry 🙂
