Tuesday scent of the day 8/25

Posted by Robin on 25 August 2020 251 Comments

It's Tuesday and Banana Split Day. A very happy 90th to Sir Thomas Sean Connery. What fragrance are you wearing?

Tired, tired, tired...I'm going to finish my Starbucks Latte and pick a fragrance from what you all are wearing.

Reminder: 8/28 will be Dealer's Choice, edition 4...propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Spode Blue Room Sunflower Teapot ("Bring splendour to every pour with this Blue Room Sunflower teapot. The magnificent design, first launched in 1812, beautifully envelopes the curves of the teapot, leaving a creamy white spout and handle. Designed with hundreds of years experience for the perfect pour.") is £55 at Portmeiron.

Trayee, that I wanted to wear yesterday. My life gets more chaotic everyday, but it’s all in a good cause, so I’m not complaining (really).
    Love the teapot.
I’m with you in the tired Robin, although I did manage almost 7 hours of sleep last night.

Same here. Woke up feeling a bit weary. I’d like a few days in a row of really blissful sleep. Now that I think about it, though, why settle for a few days? I’d like a lifetime of really blissful sleep every night. 🙂

        Yes I agree!

I used to be such a good sleeper, but something went wrong in my thirties and now at fifty plus it’s not getting any better. Mind you, under normal circumstances I manage 8 hours on most nights, so I should not complain really.

Everybody’s sleep needs are different, so I think it’s totally ok to say 8 hours isn’t enough for you! I regularly need more than 9 hours to feel truly rested. I wish I didn’t. I could have so much more time in my days, if I could function on less! But my body gives me very immediate feedback when I don’t sleep enough (migraines, upset stomach, etc, etc), so I’ve learned to (mostly) honor it.

Isn’t Trayee beautiful? Still my favourite Vermeire.

I took a little wee nap on the sofa. I am up again.

I do not have Trayee so I need to keep reading for my day’s scent…it is very unusual for me to not be wearing fragrance by now!

Good luck with the move, it’s something I know not many enjoy. Naps are great for restoration, I try to take a quick 15 minute in the afternoon (@ 1 or 2) and it helps. Too much nap or too late and it disrupts the evening’s sleep. I’ve found a quick 15 does the trick.

Gosh, when was the last time I indulged in a banana split?! Or an ice cream sunday in general? I need to get over to Serendipity on the east side of town for one of their amazing ice cream extravaganzas. They actually sell pints now although I’ve not seen any in stores yet.

If you want a good gelato, and like pistachio, I would make it down to Mott St (if you can bare it) to Polo Sud and try theirs. They make it with pistachios from Sicily, and its cheaper than a plane ticket. The owner also speaks Italian if you want to give a nice “Grazie”
One thing I love about NYC you can get a good gelato and a good pizza 🙂

And yes, New York pizza is the gold standard in my house.
In SF, my favorite gelato is from PHILMORE on Fillmore St., SF. Their Rose Petal, Salted Caramel, Sicilian Pistachio, and Marzipan are delicious.

At my doctors office, the first people to get the flu shot is the good insurance people. I have crappy insurance so I have to wait. The pharmacy doesn’t care though, so I go there. Probably next week.

I did. I got the 2021 over 65 years old super duper shot. The whole pharmacy team had already gotten theirs.

I got my stationary bike out of the garage where the movers put it last November, wiped it clean and it’s now downstairs.

The pharmacist told me to drink lots of water and don’t work out for 24 hours. So gosh, I had to walk by the bike yesterday. oh well, what’s another day.

So, yes, my arm hurts like hell. Woke me up at 4am but I did go back to sleep.

Since I’m the queen of Procrastination, I now have a very busy day, which is my own fault, so not complaining (but still kinda complaining).

To try to retain a semblance good will, I’m in Box of Eels. I hope it works! This is one of those perfumes that easily moves from Boudoir to Boardroom, which just so happens to be my suggestion for a future Community Project.

If I were a weather god, I would soak California with a drenching rain and blow Laura right out of the gulf. Thinking of all the people a and wildlife being affected by these fires and storms, not to mention covid. My gosh, we need something good to happen in a massive scale.

Sampling this morning. Mendittorosa Ithaka…just a dab. Seemed very, very nice but it’s too hot for that one. So, will save for another day.

So, a few dabs of Yerbamate by Villoresi. I won’t thunk this sample, as it seems too strong to dunk myself. But it’s nice and green on this hot day. Will likely set it aside to pass along.

Ahhh…banana splits make me think of Fenton’s in Oakland. Loved that place. Good memories.

Woke up in Amouage Do a for her today. I was was feeling pretty good until about a half an hour ago. My mother asked me to make a vet appointment for one of my dogs to have a lump looked at. Jake has a few fatty tumors. I made an appointment and said that our normal vet is booked until the end of October. So I took the first available appointment. Mom wasn’t happy because she wanted our normal vet but he always seems booked. Yes, I kind of get her point of why she said that why go to him when we can find a vet closer to us and get in sooner. My response was to find another vet if she wanted, make the appointment and cancel the other because I am not her secretary. She wasn’t happy but I can’t keep doing the things she can’t be bothered to do and my own nonsense between shifts at work. Switched to vintage Givenchy III before work.

My theme for this week seems to be wearing Neela Vermeire perfumes. I wore Rahele yesterday, have been wearing Bombay Bling as my after work/evening/ bedtime scent and this morning I’m giving Niral (from a sample) another go. So far so good.

Ah, we are house twins. How do you feel about Niral? (autocorrect wants to change it to Viral ?) I got Rahele on a whim in January as it was discounted and I enjoyed it. No regrets it’s lovely and very wearable.
I enjoy it, but am not yet really smitten. I think I will want to get Bombay Bling first. I’m on a no buy for a few months, so Bombay will have to wait a little while.

This is my second time wearing Niral and I like it very much so far. I feel there is a common thread among some if not all NV creations which I’ve only started to appreciate properly in the last year or so. It’s rich and smooth and very elegant to me. If it came in the duo travel set I would definitely buy it. Bombay, by the way, does. As such, I will spend more time with this sample and wait for a Luckyscent coupon.

If I get BB it will be the travel set.
It seems to make sense that there should be a common thread, they are all Duchaufours and NV seems to have a clear idea of what she wants with the house.
The ones I liked the least were Ashoka and Pichola.
Niral reminds me a little of Traversée.

            Good point about BD.
I cannot believe I’ve never smelled Traversée (at least not that I remember). At first Niral reminded me of Cuir de Nacre by Ann Gérard because of the iris and leather combo but while CdN was more dry and austere, Niral is sweeter and creamier without being a gourmand (plus it’s got rose and spices and other things going on in there).
Ashoka and Pichola are my least favorites from the brand.

I had read this before I ever tried Niral, so I tried with a certain bias, but the resemblance is there. I never really fell for Cuir de Nacre.

So, I propose a theme along the lines of “My other love,” scents that connect to other passions you have besides perfume. No secret that for me, one of them is weightlifting. I like to wear colognes to the gym–something “fresh” and “clean” and maybe even a bit “masculine,” so that no one is likely to complain that the gym smells like an “old lady.” Fico di Amalfi will represent that for me today, but it easily could have been MJ Bang (which is less clean at the start, but settles into traditional masculine cologne territory soon enough).

I wanted to like Bang, but I recall it had some modern musk or aquatic notes that go all wrong on me. LOL re: your wearing the “manly” fragrances to the gym.

Well, I was going to reach for Fico di Amalfi, and then my hand just wandered over to my old bottle of Shalimar instead. This is definitely a fragrance I don’t wear to the gym! But I smell nummy.

It’s quite strong, IMO. I was surprised at it being the scent of body products at a hotel–usually they choose something that’s less of a statement for that sort of thing. I can imagine that if folks are wearing it, you know it!

I loved it when the Ritz had Bvlgari’s Au the Blanc as their hotel body product line.
A few years ago, they changed to something blah and I’m certain, less expensive.

My cp theme is to wear a perfume with tuberose. Sunday I wore original Juicy Couture, Monday was Carnal Flower and today is LouLou. I’m just now smelling a similarity between LouLou and Poison. Interesting.

I’m in Dune. I don’t really have a theme for this week’s cp, just grabbing whatever I feel like wearing, so maybe that is my theme.
Made a target run with my older daughter yesterday because she wanted to get a few things for her new apartment. She’s getting excited and it suddenly struck me that we’ll be taking her back to school in just 9 days, and now I feel verklempt. She’s been home since March and I’ve just gotten so used to her being here.? That is not to say that I’ve taken it for granted, I’m well aware that if it weren’t for the pandemic I would not have had all this extra time with her. Definitely a silver lining.

My theme is “I can wear it to work only when I’m teaching online” and today I’m in Dame Perfumery’s Monsoon. I absolutely love it but a few students were like “Yucko!” so I save it for off-time.

We’re only 7 school days in and already I’ve had a freshman come to my office hours in tears because remote high school is the worst. I agree 100%. If you have older kids who are starting school online this year, give them an extra hug. And young kids? Give them 12 extra hugs.

We do get to hear a lot more about school though from her – yesterday, I got to take an AP history test after dinner, for example (she wanted to show us how hard it was). 🙂 She would MUCH prefer her friends over her parents, though.
Younger daughter invited me to her P.E. class workout today (it wasn’t live). I mastered the square dance moves like a champ! 🙂

I looked in my drawer for something and didn’t find it but did find Amouage Beloved. Wow is this stuff beautiful! It makes me just want to bite my wrist! Spicy clove immortelle rose, yum! I’m not getting the strong animal is that others note. Maybe later. The latest hurricane forecast has Laura shifting west more toward Galveston, but it’s still very uncertain. I’m waiting awhile longer before hauling all my flowerpots inside. Not only is that a chore but the cats will go crazy and make a real mess with them. I’m having warm thoughts about pistachio gelato after reading the comments above! Mmm! There is a lovely little restaurant/cafe/bakery here where the owner, who is Persian, makes fabulous gelato and his pistachio is to die for, though tbh I often just get his sublime vanilla! Or coffee!

SOTD is Brooks Brothers Black Fleece epd, the version in the fun white bottle which I stalked for some time. I think NST gets an enabler badge for this, but I may have come across it because Steve DeMarcado is the nose. He also did Fancy Nights and the two Queen Latifah perfumes that I enjoy. Black Fleece is not much like any of those three, except maybe Queen for just a while. I am getting some good ideas for Dealer’s Choice: “Finish It!” stands out as something that I should do. Also the idea of long-unused bottles. Maybe call it “OH! I have THAT?” 😀

SOTD is a combo of Prada Amande and BP’s Petals, heliotrope and Ambrette. I used coconut oil as a moisturizer, so I smell really soft, nutty and gently sweet.

You’re a good friend to write the resumes. I always ask them to come up with one, then I look at it and make notes, discuss my observations with many questions injected and then say send me the updated one when they’re ready.

That’s what happened with this one; but this person has a broad, deep work history (he’s an actor with a MFA who is ALSO a veteran and ALSO has years of teaching, training and team leadership skills, IN ADDITION to his theater and tv credits. He just wants to settle down now in Boston area, so with all that talent and skill he needed some one to step in, look objectively at his skill set and potential, and write 3 resumes for him, so that he has flexibility in marketing himself. He will no doubt be filling out the applications online, but with his connections, my connections and all of our friends connections and the resumes, we hope to bypass the online app thing and market on the strengths and experience.

    Gorgeous Teapot Robin!

I wrote this sitting outside the vet clinic waiting for my black kitty Kate, who needed an exam and bloodwork done for an upcoming dental. Feline dental bills suck but the vet is utterly enamored of Kate (called her adorable 3x in one conversation) and that makes me feel a little better.

SotD is Dua Fragrance Aoud Bleu Intense, in my I-didn’t-expect-to like-this CP. It’s “inspired by” Fragrance du Bois Oud Bleu Intense, which I got a sample of at Lucky Bar in NYC this January.

I was not really an oud fan either time I worked in the Middle East, so when I asked the Lucky Scent Bar worker to show me his current favorites this January, I sniffed the Fragrance du Bois quite reluctantly. Contrary to all my expectations, the scent was super refreshing and soothing.

Of course, it’s also astronomically expensive, so when I realized this Dua version was around I went for it. If anything I like it better than the FdB!

    Postal service woes:
    1. For the 3rd time in as many months, mail I out out was not picked up! It is very obvious that the mail person was there because I got mail, but he just shoved the envelopes further in. What the – – ?

    2. I ordered stamps last Sunday. So far, 7 business days later, no sight of the stamps! For goodness sake, they are the new Ruth Asawa stamps. They could be popular but still, I don’t think the demand has outnumbered the supply at my post office – the township demographic does not lend itself to being knowledgeable about this artist for there to be a run on these … but who knows?

I stalked him today. When I looked outside in between Zoom meetings, I saw the mail truck but no postman to be seen. I looked again a few minutes later and I saw him haul something from the back of his truck. Then I heard a little metallic clang and I immediately opened the door and poked my head out to ask him if he took my mail. Yep, one day later.

Now, I swear I read in a forum thread this was a “descendant” of Shalimar, but this is a second cousin at best, and the one that leaves muddy footprints on your floors. I made a welcome video for my class and it took sooo long and I’m not happy with the result but since there’s gonna be alot of videos in my near future best move on. They told us to be “relatable” so I included the new puppy in the vid for cuteness bonus points

Wear the perfume that travelled the greatest distance, went the strangest route, or took the longest time to reach you .

    SotD = Apres L’ondee

It’s been too long since I spent time with this delightful and delicate perfume. Apres L’ondee fits the vibe of this Tuesday-bluesday quite nicely.

Robin, I’m tired too, and that sunflower teapot is lovely. I used to have a thing for blue and white china. Still do, I just don’t let myself indulge it anymore.

Thinking of blue, I’ll wear L’Heure Bleue tonight, it works well with the faint remains of Apres L’ondee.

I don’t read as much as I used to. Goal for today: spend some quality time with a book. Not an avid reader of mysteries, but I’ve got a copy of P. D. James’ The Murder Room I’m going to try out. It came from a stack of books my neighbor left out on her porch with a “please help yourself” sign.

But first it’s time to attack today’s to do list again. Those breakfast dishes are starting to look a little annoyed with me. 😀
