Hump Day, World Humanitarian Day, International Orangutan Day and National Aviation Day, Coco Chanel's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in a dab of Serge Lutens A La Nuit. The closest things to unicorns that I have are scents that I would not or could not pay full price for, and that kind people either gave me as gifts, or purchased on my behalf somewhere where they could be found cheaper. A La Nuit was purchased for me years ago by Bela (some of you may remember her, she used to comment here regularly), who found it half price in London.
Reminder: 8/21 will be Captured Unicorn Friday. Wear a perfume that you thought would be impossible to get, but you managed it. If you have not yet captured a unicorn, wear anything you like and tell us about the unicorn you'd like to catch. Suggested by Undina.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hello! Seems like you’re feeling a bit better now Robin? Good to see!
In similar manner to your A La Nuit I’m in Amouage Love Mimosa today, which I bought at half the original price. A real gem in terms of price. Guess that counts as a unicorn.
Today feel normal, thanks! Glands still swollen but that’s it.
That is a deal!
Glad to hear you’re feeling better Robin! 🙂
So jealous.
I’m in Hermes Agar Ebene, which is a unicorn to me because I am no where near a Hermes counter and thought I’d never be able to try it. Thanks to a generous NSTer. I may have to switch to Coco later in honor of her birthday.
We watched The Tourist last night on prime with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. Depp’s character (the tourist) was a math professor from Madison! The other characters in the movie made reference to how he was from Wisconsin, and said it with such disgust, we had to Lol. It’s not that bad. Really. Fun fact: the one and only time my husband and I visited New York, we saw Depp in the flesh. He was coming out from a taping of the Letterman show and there was a small crowd gathered and so we stopped to see what all the fuss was about. He signed autographs and posed for pictures. I was close enough to touch him. This was of course back before cell phones, internet or Facebook. I could have easily gotten my picture taken with him, he graciously posed with many, but I chickened out. My husband asked me afterward why I didn’t and well, he was just so good looking. It made me nervous! I do have a photo of him though.?
That is a fun fact! He sure has come a long way from 21 Jump street ?
I know! I was totally star struck.?
My best friend, her fantasy since we were younger was Johnny Depp. I didn’t understand why, but for her he was the sexiest man alive.
Knowing her, she would of either chickened out if she saw him or hop the fence and try to have a full on make out session with him. 🙂
Lol. I would agree, he is quite sexy. There would have been no fence for her to hop, it was just a smallish crowd of about a dozen and everyone was well behaved. His body guard stayed close to his side though. It’s a fun memory.
I love Agar Ebene! It’s the only Hermessence that was worth buying for me, so I got 15 ml when I was in Milan some years ago.
Nice! Those 15 ml bottles are really the perfect size.
What a great memory! You do learn to look at people in NYC…random sightings are frequent. I was across the street from Letterman once and saw a crowd waiting. So, I waited a bit. George Clooney…even at a distance his looks were quite stunning. My first thought was, “now THAT’S a movie star.”
If I ever saw George Clooney in the flesh, there is really no telling what I’d do…. LOL
?
Depp is definitely sexy, I still think Robert Redford is The One! And Paul Newman and Gregory Peck would be 2-3. Cary Grant is a 3 also. Oh, and Al Pacino ! It’s all a swirl behind Paul!!
Oh, Gregory Peck, definitely. I would have been a blithering idiot if I could hop in a time machine to meet him, especially around the time of Roman Holiday.
Great story!
And you smell fantastic.
Thanks!?
And, frankly, I’m very much looking forward to my trip coming up to Wisconsin’s Door County.
Oh wow, when are you going?! I mentioned I honeymooned there didn’t I? I don’t suppose you’ll come through Madison, but if you do, let me know!
You did mention it! Week of Labor Day. We are staying in Egg Harbor, which is where my husband lived. But he plans to show me all over.
Not through Madison, unfortunately. Flying into Green Bay. Another time, I hope.
I learned that it’s not always fun to take a picture with someone who looks glamorous while you’re looking ordinary – I have a picture from Disneyland with a gorgeous Mary Poppins and a dashing Bert – and me in the middle, in your typical Disneyland day tripping get up. I do not love that picture! 🙂
Haha, sounds like I made the right call then!
LOl. One of my favorite photos of my mom was her with Goofy. A wise woman.
Funnnn!!!!
It really was! We felt so “touristy.” lol
One of the most embarrassing and erotic dreams I ever had involved Mr. Depp. It was so visceral, I knew the texture of his skin and how he smelled. I am sure I am not the only one!
“mommy you smell like perfume today” said my 5 year old…
Unicorn my dwindling down decant of Sous le Vent
Cappuccino made at home and toast. On vacation we picked up an olive bread with Herbs de Provence. There is one more piece left and I think I will eat it the rest. That would make 3 pieces of toast this morning…
Re-reading Call me By Your Name while its still summer (though it feels like fall today)
Also testing out a new face cream today, Estee Lauder’s Revitalizing Supreme+. I usually use the Daywear, but this woman sold me on this one. I will report back.
Aww, that’s so sweet. My 14 year old still calls me “mommy” when she refers to me in the third person. I know those days are numbered, my 20 year old calls me mom and my son (23) has been calling me by my first name for years.?
What is that about???!!! My older son (19) calls his grandfathers by their first names now, and sometimes his father. Mercifully, he has not called me by my first name yet, at least not to my face. $%^#@&%*+
It must be a boy thing.?
Not necessarily, I called my dad by his first name for years and years. It wasn’t a conscious thing.
What a lovely compliment from your daughter 🙂
I love fall and it reenergizes me.I got out my last Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Butter in the cupboard to start using and have been going through my fall/Halloween candles (way too many)and decorations for inspiration.I haven’t transitioned to fall scents yet, just still too hot here.
Accidentally posted this in the thread above where I was following.Sorry!
Awwww I bet you smell great.
This is really lovely!
I need to find a similar perfume for when this runs out. The prices on evil bay are out of this world.
I’m in LAP Safran Troublant, spritzed last night before bed. I’ll amp it up this morning with a few additional sprays. Even though it’s an edt, it lasts really well on me.
It’s cooled off a teensy bit here, so I’m going to start loading and organizing the van today. I’ve submitted to a couple hospitals in Oregon and Washington yesterday, so the wheels are beginning to move again after what seems to me to be the longest summer in history.
My spirits are beginning to lift, so I know fall is on the way. For some reason, summers make me feel lethargic and depressed. So glad the summer of 2020 is nearing its end!
Stay well, all! Don’t get lackadaisical about masks, social distancing, and hand washing. We’re all over it, for sure, but please take care and stay WELL! And continue your wonderful wafting into the new season! Fall, I LOVE YOU! ??
I also love fall weather, but mostly the fall light.
I will use more Sous Le Vent before I head out to make sure people stay their distance.
Spray liberally! You need that scent bubble to ward off bad pathogens and crazy people! ?
We are season opposites, the dark days of winter make me feel lethargic and depressed. I don’t like *hot*, I prefer temps in the 70’s and low humidity. But the SUN?? is what I love and it makes such a difference to my psyche.
Well, I think I’m the oddball in this respect, for sure! I’m not sure WHY this is, unless it has something to do with inherited traits…I’d love to learn more about it. I’m a believer in genetic memory, but I haven’t found any research to back me up. Although, I don’t even know HOW this could be researched…
Some people have summer SAD – it’s more common to have winter SAD so there is more research on that but summer blues are definitely a thing
Really?! I know about winter sadd, but had no clue about the summer variety! This makes me feel SO validated! I tend to minimize it, because it’s so opposite of what most others experience, and I just to dismiss my feelings, but I do get seriously down in summers that are bright and hot. I’m going to look into this a bit more. Thank you SO MUCH!!
I definitely get depressed in the heat. I don’t want to do anything when it’s 95+°F.
I once attended a genetics lecture about how Holocaust survivors’ grandchildren had severe physical anxiety reactions to stimuli that would only have triggered anxiety in people who had been there in the camps. So, the lecture was all about how some memory was engrained into one’s genes. Perhaps your love of cool, cloudy weather is encoded in your Irish genes!
That is amazing and horribly sad, but I believe it. I often wondered about genetic memory because one of my earliest recollections at age 4 was flying for the first time to Ireland, looking out the window as we we’re landing (at Shannon, which was is in the countryside) and feeling like I had finally come home, although obviously I wasn’t able to articulate that. I have very vivid memories of that trip to this day. If I’m in pastoral surroundings, I still feel perfectly at home and have a strong sense of belonging. I took a college course once on “environment, belonging, and sense of place” and it was fascinating!
SAME here, madtowngirl.
One of the reasons I hate winter so much, is it’s so much harder to do anything. The roads are constantly bad, so you have to leave early. Bundle up, warm up the car. Walk slowly so you don’t slip.. if I lived somewhere with less snow/ice, I would probably feel differently.
Yes, I can totally see that. I’m not a fan of bitter winters, like the negative temps I had in ND last year. But I love a warm fluffy snow, where the temps hover just below freezing. And the next day, it goes up to 45* and all the snow melts! ?
I call that spring!?
Good point! ?
I’m looking forward to fall as well. Summer is my favorite season but I start getting restless for the next season around now. Sweaters, leaves turning, fall foods (minus pumpkin spice!), and cozy fall scents.
Yah, I’m with you! I’m also an oddball in that I really enjoy change. Most people get a bit anxious with change, although I’m sure it depends on what KIND of change they’re dealing with. I kind of look at it (mostly) as a challenge and learning experience.
I’m another oddball. I think it’s because I grew up moving a lot. I’ve always loved the scene in Parenthood where Mary Steenburgen describes life like a roller coaster. Some people laugh and enjoy the ride, others (like the Steve Martin character) are upset by it. I’m not always laughing, but I try to remember that scene and maintain some humor.
Humor is a life saver. Literally!
Does Safran Troublant last on you? I remember it was very fleeting on me.
Yes, I think a lot of people complain of the same lack of tenacity with this one. Almost all perfumes last really well on me, or maybe my sniffer takes longer to become scent insensitive? I do spray a bit more liberally with this one- about 4-5 sprays, so maybe that’s it?!
I wanted to love Safran Troublant so badly, but could not love it, when I finally got a sample, must he the sandalwood
It’s not what I expected when I first bought it as a blind buy. I didn’t care for it too much for the first year because I found it too dry, even a bit bitter! I was expecting something sweeter, and a bit more “moist,” if that makes sense. I’m glad I didn’t swap it away, because it’s really grown on me. Are you not a fan of sandalwood in general, or just the sandalwood in this one?
The only sandalwood I had was Stash, and I did not love it either, smelled like dill pickles on me.
Stash was too too much on me. I’ve noticed the dill pickle effect from a couple of fragrances also, and they are always a big no.
I love a good crisp dill pickle! But no, I wouldn’t want to smell like one! ?
I tend to get the “summer blues” too! I think it’s because I always expect them to be so fun and action-packed, but usually it’s too hot to do anything. And then I feel like everyone else is having more fun than me. Hah!
Yes, I can see that! Expectations never measure up to reality, sadly.
Thanks for the reminder about fall- need that right now! Fingers crossed you get the location you want!
I feel for you! The heat there has been horrendous from what I’m seeing. Added to that the multiple fires in different parts of CA, which just seems to make everything a 100% worse. I hope you get some cooling rain and weather soon.
Woke up waaaay too early today. Getting ready for the semester to start next week – this week is sadly filled with administratively driven Zoom meetings, and I think they trigger a little anxiety (and thus the poor sleep). I will be glad for some structure, I think, when my classes begin on Monday, though I am of course teaching online.
Commando at the moment. I’m going to see if I can get a mobility workout in before a shower, then start my work day.
Happy Hump Day, all!
Is is more difficult to teach virtual, or is it that you haven’t found your groove yet, because it’s a new way of doing things? I find it interesting how the general populace opines that healthcare workers and teachers “signed up” for the risk of getting coronavirus on the job. If we voice any objection, we’re “whining.” Yet, professional sports players, who get a new N95 every time they fly, are lauded when the opt out of the season, because they are “protecting themselves and their family,”’which is very “honorable.” They choose family over money, which seems to show how “they sacrifice for their family.” I guess the shows what this culture values…?
I find it so much more work to teach in the online environment. Everything has to be presented multiple times, in various formats, and in such a way that there is the least amount of misunderstanding, because there is no face to face nuance or real time interaction between instructor and student.
Good gracious – who in their right mind would not value the services and sacrifices and risks of health care workers? Answered my own question, there.
Oh, yes I can see that. It’s so much more difficult to “read” people online. And when you’re trying to impart critical information, it must be pretty daunting. I did both on-line and in person learning in college, and I much preferred the in person learning. Plus, I think I retained information better being in person. I feel for all the teachers out there, for sure. Brave New World we are entering…?
On of my friends who teaches at Texas Tech posted that he spent three hours yesterday filming a 10-minute segment of one course! I’m so glad to be retired.
Video production is so time consuming! Wait til he gets to the editing phase; that’s another three hours….
Hope it all goes well. I agree that structure helps.
Hugs and good vibes for smooth Zoom classes.
Unicorn Day 3: Caron Coup de Fouet. I found an old bottle and it still smells fantastic, but like a lot of older compositions you need to wait out the first five or ten minutes until everything slides into place.
Not the same as a house or even scent twin, but I am wearing Caron face powder. We used to have a store here in New York City, a couple years ago they closed down. The woman who work the store was so nice and she remembered me from before and held a canister of the face powder for me, and I went to the office where she was packing everything up and she sold it to me.
Do you remember if her name was Diane?
yes!
She is wonderful. I purchased something in person and over the phone from her from Caron.
I remember her! I purchased several items from her, such a lovely woman.
This makes me sad. I wanted to get a powder puff from that location. And Guerlain? Is there a boutique left on the Eastern Seaboard?
I believe there’s still one in The Plaza. Closed right now, though. Used to be at The Waldorf but moved.
There is still a Guerlain boutique in Toronto, not sure about the US. Usually I order from Bergdorf Goodman. Oh, and there is still one at Epcot Center I think?
Inoui today. I wore it back in the 80s and then it became a unicorn for a long time until the original ThePerfumedCourt got some in and I obtained a sample (which I just thunked). Then I mentioned it here and a very kind NSTer sent me a decant. So happy to have this beautiful fragrance again!
That is a real unicorn!
And a question for vintage/unicorn lovers: I’ve never purchased perfume from eBay. Are there any reliable sellers with a wide selection of vintage perfumes? I’m specifically looking for Fendi and for vintage Lauren and maybe I’m falling further down that rabbit hole and there will be others. I’m nervous to just randomly order something from an unknown person. If it’s not appropriate to discuss here, feel free to email me via my screen name above. Thanks for any advice!
I would say look at the sellers rating and try to get a batch number on the bottom of the bottle and look up the code if possible
I haven’t had any bad experiences but if you do I think evil bay does a good job protecting the consumer
Thanks!
I would like to know about this too. I see some of my unicorns on eBay but I just don’t want to risk it. On shopgoodwill there is often vintage perfume. I think eBay-ers snap them up and resell them. I also think they couldn’t possibly be stored well, but I don’t really know.
Good point. I still plan to frequent garage sales as well and likely they will be the same issue: poor storage and just old. That’s okay!
Ooohhh one of my friends recently told me about shopgoodwill but didn’t even think about using it from a perfume perspective!
Amazing perfumes have shown up. Unfortunately, I always get outbid.
It’s much more likely, as lillyjo suggested, that vintage perfumes will not have been stored properly than that someone would make a fake. I bought vintage perfume from eBay once and it worked out fine for me. If you really want those perfumes, it is worth the risk, which is frankly slight 🙂 most people are good people, I think. Good luck either way.
Thanks for this, K!
I’m not into vintage necessarily but have bought vintage on ebay – so far, so good. I usually don’t go for pricey items, though – that risk is not worth it. Also, both the vintage scents I bought happened to be in metal containers so light exposure was less of a worry. I bought something really odd yesterday – a “rebottled” vintage Shalimar cologne. A $12 risk. I’ll report back!
did someone say vintage Shalimar?
Yes, and I think it’s really old – bottle was full, too. But – it could be an old fake – “rebottled independent of Guerlain”. Sounds like grey market decants, and I read that those happened a long time ago (50s). So – could be super exciting or a total dud. We’ll see.
I dont have a seller, but I’ve never had an issue buying perfume on ebay from random people. I find that its people clearing out their stash. I dont mind a half bottle, and i feel like no one is going to fake a half bottle:D
I have not done so in several years, but I have had both good and bad luck. On a pricey item that was spoiled beyond use I eventually got my money back from paypal. The majority of purchases went fine, though.
I have had really good luck. Try to get it with the box, that way you are assured the fragrance was at least protected from the light.
Springpansy, I’m an Ebay fangirl! I have bought umpteen vintage perfumes, and a few luxury and niche perfumes, from USA sellers on Ebay over about a seven year period. Only once a seller did not send the item, and did not respond to my inquiry. I just followed the Ebay procedure and after the waiting period, Ebay gave me a refund. I always buy from sellers who post at least one clear picture of the actual item, and have a few sales on their records. After a while you get a feel for sellers genuinely trying to get a little side business going, and they don’t want bad reviews and take pride in offering good stuff. I think you are as likely to get good value from random individuals as from some of the big sellers. Just search and compare.
Thanks, everyone, this was all super helpful! I think I will eventually take the plunge.
Hello All!
My SOTD is Elie Tahari eau de parfum. Can definitely sense the tea and fig motes in this one. Very nice, office- worthy scent
Have a good day friends!
You have a great day too!
?
Well. There is a pandemic going on, a heat wave, and also our AQI is at 160, which means I can’t even hang out in the background to settle my mind. Add to that a number of work complications and the resurfacing of the plague, and frankly, I feel justified in my grumpiness.
I’m in Ginger Piccante in a frankly vain effort to buoy my spirits. I was going to put on Kyoto, but then remembered that smoky incense loses its charm when real smoke hangs heavy in the air on the other side of my windows. Incidentally, I’m finding allll the leaky window/door fixtures in the house. With my nose. At least the sunlight filtering through the smoke is pretty.
I think grumpiness is allowed right now!
In Saks the other day I tried all of the Guerlain AA scents and one that surprised me as really lovely was Coconut Fizz. Coconut is a challenging note for me but this was quite effervescent.
Hmm, I wouldn’t expect to like Coconut Fizz. I’ve never tried it, but if I ever find myself at a perfume counter again, I’ll give it a sniff!
Oh, now I’m going to have to test that – I love coconut!
We are getting smokey air up here as well. I have a very nice neighbor who seems to have her very not nice gardening team coming now twice a week with their leave blowers and electric saws and whatnot. They are blasting away at the moment, along with the heat and the scent of smoke in the air, it is a little claustrophobic.
Urgh. I totally get what you mean. Our landscapers were just here, and all that noise definitely did add to the oppressiveness of the morning 🙁 I hope things clear up for you soon! (And for us, too!)
On this map our AQI is 159–so same. Gah!
https://abc7news.com/smoke-forecast-bay-area-in-sf-today-air-pollution-wildfire/6377953/
When I am empress, I will ban leaf blowers across the entire kingdom.
🙂
Let me know when the coronation ceremony happens; I have a list for you.
?????…..
Yes! Please!
Totally get it. I have days like that as well, although sans smoke this year (so far)… I don’t know what to do but keep on keeping on and looking for joy wherever I can find it, which often includes coffee or tea, beer and wine, a British detective series or two, a chat with a friend online and perfume, frivolous or not.
Oh, and I made the browneyedbaker’s version of compost cookies (from Milk Bar) last night and they are amazing. I don’t like pretzels and didn’t have any around, so I subbed Saltines. I think they work great!
“coffee or tea, beer and wine, a British detective series or two, a chat with a friend online and perfume, frivolous or not”….this is all joy for me too!♥️
;D
I’ve been baking too much, springpansy!! I’ve made about 48 muffins (40 of which I stuck in the freezer), a cake, and sourdough. I’m not sure how much more baking-for-comfort is reasonable to subject my house to.
Thank you for saying that, though. I just spent half an hour of my workmorning lying on the couch and reading a book. Excitingly, the woman in my book is having a full nervous breakdown. It’s, uh, comforting? to think of people having a harder mental time than I am having. Reminds me that I’m ok.
Lol – yep.
I’ve been meaning to try out World Peace Cookies, Dorie Greenspan’s recipe. Maybe today is the day.
I looked up the Compost Cookie recipe. It looks great! I’ll have to get the ingredients next time I do a grocery order. I just placed two, since we have three (three!!) suspicious areas in the Atlantic that may become Gulf-bound storms. ?
I’m with you on finding joy wherever you can find it and British detective series. Do you watch Endeavour? We just binged the latest season, it’s very good.
Love Endeavor. And Broadchurch and River and Shetland (I’m reading the Ann Cleeves series now – I watched Shetland long enough ago that it’s all new again. ;D). And also DCI Banks and Inspector Lewis.
Thanks for the cookie rec! I need to bake something. We’re all kind of depressed right now.
They really are delicious. I had one with my coffee this morning. 😉
I am grumpy too today, Koyel, and I don’t even have the heat wave to blame — cool here today.
Robin, sending you anti-grump vibes in the hopes that we will both cheer up! (Are you feeling well?)
Yes, much better, thanks! Just grumpy for no reason.
Also not pleased about the plague. It’s hot & humid/East coast style weather down here in southern CA too. Big hugs to you.
OMG She-ra, we went for a walk in the evening a few days ago, and it felt like a night in Boston, it was so hot and humid. Ridonkulous.
Thank you <3 stay safe from the dozen things trying to get us right now.
Can I join your in grumpiness? This smoke and heat is horrible for my asthma. It’s so bad right now I can’t even see the mountains around us- and I usually have a clear view from my desk. I hate being stuck inside. Hugs!
All grumps are welcome!! My asthma has had a tough time this summer, too. Last night, we slept with the air purifier on all night, and I woke up mostly fine. That said, I feel the asthma clawing at the base of my throat in a way that makes me worried about exercising. I hate being stuck inside, too 🙁 I hope it clears up for both of us asap!
I decided to wear Coco today. Vintage Parfum, a Unicorn that I didn’t have to capture because it showed up at my door from a generous Nster ??
Yay – what a treat. NSTers are the best!
Nice! ??
NSTers are honestly the best.
??hooray for unicorns! When I read it was Coco’s birthday, I had a hunch what you might be wearing.☺️ You smell fabulous!
SOTD: Bottega Veneta
Still waking up around 3/3:30am and staying awake for a good hour and a half. This is really messing with my day as I usually like to get up early to exercise but I’m just too tired. At least I’m getting sleep, just need to be adaptable right now.
We’re at 66 degrees in NYC — what?!!!
That really is tough floragal.
Trying Lost Cherry today. I blind bought the travel spray as I had some Nordstrom notes to use and the color looked awfully appealing on the website. I can report the travel atomizer is very nicely made complete w/ a magnetic cap and the color is beautiful. I am hoping TF will make travel spray refills too unless I missed those somehow.
Getting spicy, cherry woods so far with almond arriving on the scene now. I have read reviews on Fragrantica and some complained about a lack of cherry but my nose is registering plenty. ?
Growing up, my dearly departed aunt was a perfume lover and I can remember happily sniffing through a tiered vanity stand she had filled with perfumes and this reminds me of her somehow. ♥️
Also wanted to mention I have been binge watching Catastrophe and it’s quite funny…dark humor I would say…most shows don’t get me to laugh out loud but this one surely has.
I watched that one too and thought it was really funny. I loved Sharon, she was hilarious. Fleabag is another good one, have you seen it?
Fleabag is next on my list. At least the pandemic comes in the midst of the Golden Age of TV 😉 so many good shows/series from the last decade to entertain us.
Ok you have my interest! I will check this one out.
It’s a perfume off (does her best Blue Steel look)!
On the left wrist is Vivacious, on the right is Promenade des Anglais. They actually have a bit in common—but where Viv goes spicy carnation, Prom heads to tart fruit territory.
I love the little decant of Promenade you sent me – right side definitely smells good!
Beautiful!
Oops! Well, you all are beautiful, but that was for Lillyjo and her perfume today. 🙂
Thanks Beautiful!
Another day in no 5. I keep trying to finish the bottle that is half full. This week I seem to be more tired than normal. One of my friends came over last night and I wanted to kick him. I said the night before that chicken citchittori was dinner. He took one look at the iced tea I got for dinner and what was for dinner, and asked for something else. I simply said it was either the iced tea I got or water and the chicken dish is what’s for dinner and we were not going out to eat. He said then he was going to go home. I was pretty PO’ed with his behavior.
That’s just plain bad manners (with a generous splash of spoiled child.) And, yes, he owes you an apology.
Autism or not, it is.
Didn’t realize that aspect. I have no experience on that, but it sounds like you know him well enough to know when he’s behaving badly.
I do but I know when it’s either the autism or just him willfully being rude. I think at this point, I am just going to call him out on him being plain old rude.
No unicorn, but another chypre. This time Mitsouko EdP. Still a bit undecided about it, I think I like Aromatics Elixir more.
Mitsouko can be tricky.
May I ask why you don’t like it so much? I’ve actually never tried it. Don’t know why!
It’s not bad, but a bit moody and the peach can turn a bit sour on my skin
Aromatics Elixir is one gorgeous perfume. Mitsouko is very difficult to wear.
I have EDP and EDT of AE, both are so beautiful and although seem complex, one spritz is all you need.
I’m wearing No. 19 EDP (from my new bottle!) in honor of Coco’s birthday. (And it’s my husband’s birthday!)
Ahhh, waft my way please.
No 19 is fabulous!
I will join you as a twin in a ownership of a new bottle of the EdP. Finally!
Congratulations!
It has been a unicorn for me.
Happy Birthday.
Happy celebration!
Wearing the gorgeous Nicolaï pour Homme, discontinued. I actually got the last Parisian bottle as a BUB a couple of years ago.
Busy organising things. Fixed the date for the move. Gave notice (or whatever it is called) to my current landlord and am trying to figure out about insurance.
Good thing I had so much leave owing me. Really glad that my days as a doctor are well and truly over.
I am currently contemplating life äfter medicine”. However, almost all the happy, engaged older people that I know are working into their seventies. You are going into translation work, I’m guessing. But of academic content?
Yes I’m changing to translation. Not for academia, but it will mostly consist of very complicated texts and I will probably mostly be dealing with health related content.
And completely forgot to ask: what kind of medicine are you in? I would not wish to work into my seventies so I hope I won’t have to. Current retirement age in my country is 67.
Happy for you austenfan!
Hope your move goes smoothly! And good for you for getting out of and unsatisfying career. Hope the translation gig works well for you ??
Slowly reading through old posts and saw this – congratulations on your career change and bon courage for the move! I’m in the middle of a stressful move so I can relate. Unfortunately I’m selling my flat, wish I could just give notice and leave!
Vanille Insensée, just because it was mentioned recently. From a small travel spray I got as a gift with purchase or some such reason.
Kitty Agnes startled me this morning. I woke up, opened my eyes, and she was laying up close to my chest staring directly at me. I hope she will be okay when we go out of town. A friend of mine is very excited to have her as a visitor.
You smell great! And hopefully Agnes likes visitors. Our kitties are usually quite pleased when we go out of town and have someone cat sit, as “new person” often means “amenable to giving extra attention” ?
I hope so. This is a bit riskier as she will be going to stay with someone. So, it may be confusing and disconcerting for her.
Wait, is this the same Agnes that wouldn’t let you near her not too long ago?! I guess she decided you are an ok human?
Yep. She’s all about being petted now.
Awwwww, Agnes Kitty has become quite the sweet fuzzy!
Hi all, in celebration of Chanel’s birthday, my SOTD is Chanel No. 19 Extrait. I don’t have a date, but the juice is old, thick, and brownish-green.
The air is smoke-filled in SF, we have fires to the North and South of us.
I’m so worried for the folks and critters in harm’s way.
You might have 1 of the first bottles. I know with Chanel bottles that you can usually date it by the stopper.
So many fires at once, it’s just unbelievable.
It’s so scary. I have friends in the north and south, all of them have horses. It’s really worrisome.
🙁
Keeping folks in CA, CO, WA and other parts of the West in my thoughts. I really do hope that you all get some rain ASAP.
Thank you Jalepeno. N. California doesn’t really get rain in the summer time. Our rainy season begins in late November. I think I can count on one hand the times in the previous 21 years that we’ve had Thunder storms.
Trying not to watch the news but it’s so difficult.
In a bit of a hurry because of work so I’ll go back and read and comment later. For now, though, I’m in Earl Grey & Cucumber trying to stay cool and fresh.
Also wanted to say that the eye appointment was horrible yesterday. They decided to go ahead and do the procedure to fix it. The procedure took about 15 or 20 minutes and consisted of them putting a large glass contact thing in my eye to hold the lid open and concentrate the laser beam. Then they used a laser to fix the hole in the retina. This would have all been fine I suppose, except I have a nerve that runs right by where the hole is, so almost every time they’d shoot the laser, it was a horrible shock to that nerve that almost made me pass out. I had tears streaming down my face and seriously almost vomited. It was like torture. I suppose the good news is that it is repaired but I NEVER want to have to do that (especially without some kind of anxiety med) ever again. They were incredibly kind, but it was just a horrible, sickening feeling every time it hit that nerve.
That sounds really, really awful. I’m glad to hear they fixed that, but you had to suffer for sure! I hope you’ll never have any eye issue again, ever!!
I’m so sorry for all you endured at that appointment. It’s great they were able to repair it but that experience sounds so terrible and scary on multiple levels. I hope you can take it easy tonight after work, relax and take good care of yourself. Spray more perfume. Great big hugs to you.
wow!
So sorry
This must have been horrible, hope you are on the mend now
Oh, I do want to add that I appreciate your kind words yesterday soooo much. They really helped get the through the whole ordeal. Hugs to all.
Oh no!!!!! I’m so glad that’s over, OMG.
I got LASIK ages ago and thought “I’m a big girl, I don’t need an anti-anxiety pill” and man did I regret that decision.
Promptly told my mom (who was considering going for LASIK after me) to take any drug they offered when it was her turn!
Hope your recovery is swift and smooth!
Oh my gosh. So, so sorry. That sounds just brutal. I am glad it is fixed and you made it through. Hugs!
Oh my! That sounds awful. I gave birth to a ten pounder (no drugs, no epidural), but CAN NOT imagine being awake while someone does surgery to my eyes. Honestly! You’re a brave girl.
KellyC, what a nightmare to even think about! You are very brave. Thank goodness it’s over and done with.
That sounds so awful! I’m sorry it was such an ordeal, KellyC.
OMG I missed this yesterday. How horrible! I am so sorry you went through that. I hope you recover both emotionally and physically as soon as possible.
That sounds awful, hopefully it’s a one off procedure.
Allow me to be outraged on your behalf. I am glad you are taking it in stride and that it is done. Serious hugs.
Wow, KellyC, I am so sorry.
Oh, I’m so sorry it was so painful! They should have given you a nerve block! You would have had to have a ride home, but it would have been worth it. Gosh, I’m with stinker_kit in being outraged!
Sending sympathy and thanks for sharing. I never heard of such a thing, and I have some eye issues, so now I will know to ask if I ever need a similar procedure!! Hope all the discomfort is gone!
Egads for the torture! I hope it is one and done and that the decision to do it right away prevented it from getting much worse!
ZOMG! So sorry that you ended up having a procedure you weren’t quite prepared for!
KellyC, how awful! I’m sorry you had to go through that horrific experience.
I hope it heals completely and that you don’t have to return for another round of torture.
OMG I am so sorry! How horrible. Hope you are recovered from the shock by now.
All packing done, my flight to Provence is tomorrow 14:25, a bit apprehensive but excited too.
Today it’s Hanae Mori butterflies EDP, a comfort scent and one of the few strawberry ? I really like.
Enjoy your trip – I’m sure plenty of us here are jealous…. 🙂
Thank you Eschmeling, I thought it would never happen .
Have a wonderful time and yes, I am also jealous. 🙂
Thank you She-ra, I’ve been so homesick these past few months.
Enjoy your trip and be safe
I will, thank you Tannina.
Enjoy! Is the hanae morei super strawberry? I could go for a big strawberry perfume
Thank you, the strawberry is quite present, yes, and surprisingly lasts a long time.
Enjoy!!!
Thank you Kelly, I plan to take long walks.
Mad jealous, please have SO MUCH fun and also you smell GREAT!
I had Hanae Mori ages ago when I was younger and I still have such fond memories of it… I never had anything but good times when I had it on!
Thank you teebear, yes, lots of fun in perspective . So glad you like HM, I can imagine your having wonderful times wearing it, it is so lighthearted
I am super envious. We were supposed to be leaving for Provence in about two weeks to meet friends…Maybe next year. Have a wonderful time for all of us!
So sorry, yes, fingers crossed for next year, this time of year is a glorious season in Provence.
Just enjoy your wonderful vacation! And post about your meals and excursions – we will enjoy it with you vicariously. I love France. The French have only ever been super nice to me. (Perhaps they sense my French grandmother – touching on Deva’s musings about DNA and what preferences are encoded!)
Thank you Amyitis, yes, I will still comment time to time, what I look forward to most is going to the market. Oh you have French blood, me too.
So excited for you! Enjoy your time and stay safe!?
Thank you Lillyjo, I’ll be extra careful at the airport?
Following everyone in wishing you the very BEST of times while there! Come back and tell us all about it!
Thank you so much Deva.
Have fun, Aurora!
Thank you so much, good weather is almost guaranteed.
I’m both excited for you and a little envious, too. Be careful and have fun!
Thank you dear Jalapeno, I have packed several hand sanitizers, although there is plenty of them in France.
Bon voyage! I miss France.
Guerlain Liu, the closest to a unicorn I have – got a small dabber sample once with a freebiemeet sample pack (thanks!!!), fell in love, learned it was dc, found out it wasn’t, then the Las Vegas Guerlain boutique went out of business and sold all their stuff at 40% off, and I rewarded myself for a busy semester by buying a bottle over the phone. But – I rarely wear this, and I’m not sure why! I think it’s the annoying sprayer you have to put onto the bottle first.
Off to a zoom meeting, sky outside is mustardy with fire smoke.
Fire smoke twins. Hugs!
Hugs to you back! We’ve cleared a little and the sky is not so eerie anymore…but I still need to wash all the towels I left out overnight in the backyard because they are covered in little bits of ash.
Our sky is still gorgeously weird-colored. Like an old-timey home video. Or like looking through very old, droopy windows with thick, heavy glass.
I actually tried taking a photo this morning when it was really yellow to send to a friend but my phone kept adjusting the light levels…
In Angelique Noire – really lovely on a cool day, which it definitely is here (already?!).
In other news we just signed a lease on a furnished rental in Texas come November – my plan to escape the midwest winter this year is coming together.
This is only a possibility ironically because of the pandemic and our work and school situations being remote. The definition of silver lining methinks.
You smell wonderful and congrats on the lease.
Thank you!
Enjoy your silver lining! So glad you can capitalize on working remotely!
I feel extremely lucky
Where in Texas?
Right outside of Houston…you are close, no?
Oh how nice! This winter is going to be brutal so I am suitably jealous.
It is? Now I feel not only lucky but wise
Well I meant brutal in the sense that I will be stuck at home in the cold — did not mean to imply that I knew the weather!
I got my gucci in the mail today-love at first sniff! It kind of reminds me of 24 faubourg in scent and angel in style, big and dark. Back to ebay I go!
You mean you got a sample and now you’re off to buy a full size?
If so, I relate, having been know to do that…. 🙂
Thats precisely it! 😀
Nice, enjoy!
Used up the last, except for literally one drop, of my 15 ml decant of LADDM. This is going on my buy a bottle list. I love the bottles and I love the juice, and I will probably buy the bottle next month. It reminds me of staying at my grandmother’s rustic cabin when I was a kid, cook on the wood stove, get water from the spring, smell the sagebrush and the woodsmoke, play in the reservoir and try to catch the pollywogs with your hands… 🙂
Sorry for everyone dealing with the smoke and fires this week!!! Hope you all stay safe.
In Jorum Studio Phloem which is always my answer to a potentially grumpy morning (I haven’t been sleeping particularly well).
But – past me also precooked the last of the French toast marinating in the fridge last night with browned butter, so all future me had to do this morning was pop it in the toaster oven to reheat and enjoy. Thank you, past me!
I’m sure you smell fab, but I can’t get past that name…way too close to “phlegm,” for which I have a deep and abiding hatred.
Do you want me to send you mine (15 mLs)? I can run a marker through the name ?. I cannot wear it because it is way too skanky on me.
Thanks much, but I’ll let you hang onto your own phlegm!?My perfume box runneth over!
SotD = Songes
hi there, fragrance friends, I’ve missed you. This week I’ve been in online training for the coming school year, the few days before that were spent hiking the coast near me.
Songes is helping me hold on to my beachy and relaxed mood. It’s a little unicorn-y . . . a moon bottle that came my way after Goutal stopped selling them.
On Saturday I hiked with a friend into a coastal area that has no entry point from land and so is only accessible at low tide, which means watching the clock and water levels, or swimming with a full backpack. The payoff was a day on a deserted beach, a real treat when we’re in a heatwave and everyone heads to the water to get cool.
Hope everyone is feeling beautifully fragrant today.
You! smell! wonderful! 😀
You smell lovely and your hike sounds so amazing!
aw, thank you springpansy! 😀
sounds like a great hike!
when it was over we joked it was an “epic hike.” 😀
Sounds perfect!
😀
We’ve missed you tiffanie! Your posts are so often like a ray of sun on a cloudy yucky day.
thank you, jalapeno, it’s nice to know I’m one of the sunny rays around here 😀
Agree w/ Jalapeno…I look forward to your posts! Glad you had a good hiking trip. What grade do you teach?
thanks, She-ra! It’s always nice to be among fragrance friends. 😀
I”m a music teacher and academic coach for pre-Kinder, Kinder, and grades 1 through 6. Shhh, don’t tell, but I like the littles best. 😉
SOTD Carnation by MdO. Drinking a glass of wine and relaxing. A sense of ennui has set in with this pandemic. It really seems as though it will just drag on and drag on…Will try to bake some cookies tomorrow. And Robin, if your Covid test comes out positive, you will be the first person that I’ve heard of with swollen glands as a symptom. My list until now includes: diarrhoea, dizziness, vertigo, headaches, loss of smell, backache, chest pain, confusion (in the elderly) and then of course coughing and SOB. Austenfan can chime in if she has some more.
I’ve actually seen loads of recovered Covid patients in the last few months. All I would add is extreme fatigue and a sore throat. The most remarkable symptom (to me) is the pronounced loss of smell and taste. In some people that really is the only symptom, although not every single covid patient has (had) it. Plus people seem to take a long time to really recover, both mentally and physically.
I saw a few people with swollen glands on the coronavirus board on reddit.
But it is not likely I have covid. That will not make me stop wishing though, at least, not until the test comes back!
When are you expecting results Robin?
Got them last night — no covid, boo.
Yay to red wine! All wine really. 😉 Agree that the open-endedness contributes to the toughness w/ mentally dealing w/ the pandemic. I feel like if I knew an approximate time for return to normalcy, even semi-normalcy, I would be relieved and could make more mental adjustments and cope better. Like trying to get to through a forest of unknown size…we just need to keep spraying perfume along the way. 😉
I’m in IA Saint Julep today. Needed something fun and not serious, as an antidote to my mood. Didn’t sleep well last night, so am looking forward to sleeping well tonight!
Hugs to all of you NSTers in California. Stay safe, dear ones.
Glad you’re feeling better, Robin.
SOTD = Neela Vermeire Creations Mohur Extrait
Captured Unicorn with a 20% off LuckyScent coupon a few years back. I joked that a shopping bot took pity on me because I kept moving it in and out of my cart, gathering up the courage to spend that much on a perfume.

In other news, today is my work anniversary. I would like to think that somehow Coco Chanel (in the form of Chanel No.19 EDP) and I have some cosmic relationship ?
Looking forward to reading the 200+ comments later!
Happy work Anniversary!?????
Thank you, lillyjo!
It took me a very long time to get Mohur extrait as well. In the end I received it as a gift. A very generous one. I will wear it tomorrow.
Yay! It is supergood!
Congrats on your work anniversary! ?
Happy work anniversary! Your company is lucky to have you.??
Congratulations on your work anniversary!
In Chris Rusak Io, a beautiful resinous composition that is now extinct. It seems Chris gathered the wood resins, mostly pine sap tears, and cannot precisely duplicate his formula again.
I love it too and the red juice is ?
I’m wearing the rather light and orange tinted tangerine scent of my unicorn Germaine Monteil Regime. It was the first scent I bought when I was in college and came from a nice department store in around 1970. Advance the clock by forty years and my search to find some began only with the name and knowledge that it was orange. I found it on some perfume history site then searched on eBay until I finally found a little bottle. It’s only a cologne but I still like it and it carries many memories for me.

It’s great you were able to find it!
Great story: a hunt, and then the Unicorn!
Running late today, and in the middle to something, so this will be a quick post & run. I hope to get back and read today’s comments later on tonight.
SOTD = back in Wrappings again today. ? It’s love.
Argh! Should be “in the middle of something”. Grumble.
You need a bottle…
I’m thinking the gift set with the perfume and the lotion would be perfect. Now to start stalking it…
I am still testing out the neverending Heretic Discovery set, today wearing Dirty Grapefruit. It smells a bit like someone poured grapefruit juice in an ashtray, but worse. I might have to wash it off, there is something acrid that sticks in the back of my throat.
I’ve been amusing myself the past few days tracking a package through USPS. It started in City of Industry, CA last Thursday, arrived in Portland on Monday, was supposed to be delivered by 8 pm last night, but arrived back in City of Industry at 1 am this morning. It’s still sitting there now. Good thing it’s nothing I need urgently.
That sounds/smells awful! Heretic is an all natural brand, right?
Yes
Ha! That sounds very similar to 3 day UPS delivery that took 15 days and wandered all over the southeast US and then west to Texas, passing through the town of delivery twice! ?
Hi everyone, just got home with no time to read the comments right now, I’ll fix that after supper.
Today I wore 10 Corso Como body oil under Nicolai New York, blasts of it because my husband and I went for a drive with the windows open (gorgeous weather here today) and New York smells so fresh and citrus-y and sophisticated and just plain good. Ten hours later it’s still going strong.
Ambre Aurea. Don’t know why. Love the richness of this and the comfort it delivers.
