Tuesday scent of the day 7/28

Posted by Robin on 28 July 2020 291 Comments

It's Tuesday, World Nature Conservation Day and National Milk Chocolate Day. Birthdays: Beatrix Potter, Marcel Duchamp, Malcolm Lowry, C. T. Vivian, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.  What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Comptoir Sud Pacifique L’Eau du Gouverneur. Tea at the moment is an iced Starbucks Latte.

Reminder: on 7/31, we're doing best of summer...wear the perfume you're reaching for the most this summer. (If it's winter where you are, wear the perfume you're reaching for the most this winter.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the "Travel Ceramic Tea Set, Sandalwood Handle Teacups Set, with Tea Caddy and Portable Tea Bag" is about $66 on Amazon.

Carnal Flower. Tea is Trader Joe’s spiced chai.
Our high humidity and temps broke yesterday and I was able to sleep with the windows open. I slept well and woke on my own before 6 feeling so rested. Went for a run along the lake and it was beautiful. Ran into a family of wild turkeys and they always make me a little bit nervous because I’ve seen those videos online of them trying to attack people. Eek. They are not small!

Isn’t it the best?! It’s my favorite chai from the several that I have tried.

Me too! Those things scare me!?

I find even domestic turkeys somewhat intimidating.

        Thanks!?

You smell wonderful! Wild turkeys are scary, but not as scary as some kinds of geese, in my experience. Or SWANS! Swans can be downright mean. Haven’t seen a video of one attacking someone, but I’ve totally been chased off by one before! So many birds are scary with their little pea brains, they’re just all autopilot, no processing and nuance!

Swans! Yes, they are the worst. They look so beautiful but they are just mean. I worked one summer during university at a restaurant in a resort town on the Baltic Sea in Germany, and there was a swan who regularly came into the small parking area behind the restaurant, which the kitchen opened onto, and menaced us as we were peeling potatoes in the doorway or trying to get things from the walk-in refrigerator. Sometimes he brought a friend. We were all scared of the swans — they’re huge when they want to be.

Yes indeed! I was cornered by a black swan in Australia after I’d been dropping bits of my sandwich into the river. He came right up onto the bank and almost into my lap trying to grab more food! I used my knee to shove him away and my Aussie friend panicked and shouted to me not to kick the swans, they’re protected! She was afraid I might start an international incident!

I think I was looking for tea scents at STC, and this popped up. Since I was taking advantage of a sale, I bought a 5ml decant. I really like it. I did read Robin’s review before I bought, and it sounded delicious.

    You smell great, Robin!

It is a hot day, and for once I matched my scent with my food. SOTD is Guerlain AA Herba Fresca (mint, green tea and lemon), the tea is “mojito” blend (green tea, mint and lime flavour) and the chocolate is Ritter Sport Peppermint (dark chocolate with peppermint filling). Maybe I will have some milk chocolate later.

Raided my husband’s collection for his 4711 Acqua Colonia Mandarine and Cardamom. I will be spritzing more on before heading out into the heat.

No tea. A can of Sbux Nitro cold brew that I picked up at AmazonGo yesterday after dropping off returns. I have to say…being able to just drop off unpackaged items is an incredible convenience. And credit comes through immediately.

Drinking a kale, spinach and a bit of pineapple smoothie as my husband heads out to buy himself a croissant. ?

Ugh. My mile walk back from making sandwiches was hideous. It was warm on our floor…AC had trouble keeping up. Then breathing hot air into a mask while walking in the heat and humidity didn’t help.

I just pulled the Jean Naté from the fridge and sprayed bigly. That helped.

It would be great to have a master list of the decant atomizers that don’t have evaporation issues. It seems like the 10ml atomizers Koyel uses don’t evaporate.

I have my first dentist appt of the year today. I’ll be heading downtown for the for the first time in months, not sure what to expect, but not really looking forward to it.

    Happy Tuesday!
Breakfast is avocado toast. We have four avocados to use up today, so lunch will be chips and guac.
Tea is diet Coke. The morning walk was uncomfortably hot and muggy. It was like walking into a hot, wet sponge when I opened the front door, so I couldn’t handle a hot beverage. I love the tea set, Robin, and the price is reasonable!
I’m in Prada Vetiver Infusion today, which is just about right.

Hugs to you two leggeds, and belly rubs to the four leggeds out there. ? ?❤️

Wearing L’wren Scott this morning, I love the herbal, spiciness of it, but it is definitely Perfume.

Unrelated question: does anyone know if Hiram Green will be releasing travel sizes again? I’d love 10ml of Arbole Arbole and Moon Bloom, just don’t think I need full bottles (yet).

SipOTD: oat milk latte from a cafe, and I made Clafoutis cerises for a friend of mine to have a social distance coffee date.

I was planning on Songes, but I am in Shalimar Souffle d’Oranger

Not that I want to air my dirty laundry on NST, and I am sure I am not alone, but Mr L and I have been at each other throats over school this fall. My youngest will continue his pre-k at a private Montessori school this fall, the same school we have used for the past 3 years for both of our kids.
We are comfortable with this and there is no disagreement there…
My oldest, we just received notice, will attend school 1 day a week, rotating 2 days. This has been the point of contention between us.

I have read that the increase in students having to stay home has led to an increase in the responsibility-gap between men and women in hetero households. Women are taking up more of the new responsibilities in addition to their previous work responsibilities. If true, this does not surprise me, and it it would not surprise me if it leads to an increase in tension in these families!

I feel like I should note that I recognize that there’s lots of room for disagreements on this subject, I was just wondering how the increased stress of a shifting responsibilities dynamic could exacerbate other disagreements. I hope things ease up soon between you and the Mr. ?

There is, and there is no right solution either because so much is unknown. We have this to face now, but who knows what will change this fall.. or next year..and that will open another can of worms..

I think the best thing I did was to talk about it with friends that are in the same boat, because that is all you can do, and they can relate and be sensitive to your feelings.

I am sure you are not alone ltsg. I don’t think there’s a parent out there right now that doesn’t have the start of school as the first thing on their minds right now. It has been a huge topic of conversation at my work because I work with all women, most of them mothers. There is no contention in our house because the decision has been made for us. My daughter will start virtually.
I know your daughter is young, but have you included her in any of the conversations? Children can be more insightful and wise than we give them credit for sometimes.☺️I feel ya. Hugs.

I’m so sorry this has become a point of contention, LTSG. Most school districts near Boston have made this a similarly-fraught issue for parents. In that sense there seems little to argue about, but I suspect, as Marjorie Rose mentions, that the burden of remote learning falls most heavily on women.

Planning in my town’s public schools has been nil. Private schools, on the other hand – my experience is with parochial and Montessori – have stepped up.

The children are the biggest losers. My 5 year old grandson has shown marked behavioral regression since shutdown. I’m scrambling to skill up as a teacher to help my daughter, a single mom who runs her own medical practice, fill in. I will be like Sister Mary Elephant!

good for you, floragal! It’s important to take care of yourself. I’m blondish and blue eyed and grew up in the days of no worries about sun exposure with parents who love the ocean and beach.

Yesterday I had a small lump removed from my skin, it’s probably a cyst or mole. I’ve had others removed in the past so am not worried.

But the lump was in a spot I couldn’t see easily, and it was uncomfortable because I was sitting on it all the time ? and I had to wear thong underwear so the doctor could access easily. ? Oh the indignity of it all! Makes me laugh to think about it this morning.

SOTM is coffee. I’ll get around to spritz something eventually.

Yesterday I reached out to my powerlifting trainer and asked if there’d be a time we could work together when I’d be the only trainee in the gym.

I’ll return under the barbell on Friday. I’m nervous about it–COVID, of course, but also I’ve been jerryrigging lifting stuff at home for four months. I bet I’ll have so much DOMS I won’t be able to walk on Saturday.

But, I’m excited, too. I miss lifting heavy, I miss how it feels to feel strong and capable like that. Endless lunges and dumbbell presses have become a drag!

What are DOMS, if you don’t mind my asking?

I’m missing the gym, too. No chance of me going back for awhile, with my and my hubster’s risk factors. We did dumbbell work at home at first, trying to replicate our gym routines, but it’s just not the same. After about a month, I gave and started baking cookies. ? Still walking every day, though.

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. That feeling you get when you’ve pushed your muscles past what they are used to doing. 🙂

I have multiple autoimmune diseases and have been told by doctors over the years to assume I’ve “never had a normal immune system.” I won’t be going back to an open gym this year, I expect. But my trainer runs a private gym, and if I’m only interacting with her, I’m feeling OK about that for the moment. We’ll wear face coverings and keep distance between us. Hopefully, it feels safe enough to me; I miss it so much!

I agree working out at home isn’t the same. I do best with that break from home life that comes from a change of setting, so I can just focus on my lifting and no other distractions. I still feel like I benefit from doing SOMETHING, though, so I’ve tried to let that be my focus. Do something. 🙂 And lots of walking.

Just mentioning that you should look at their air exchange/ventilation system at the gym first.

If someone was there 3 hours ago huffing and puffing, it’s possible particles are still airborne. Not trying to scare you, but with your health issues, I would suggest being very, very careful. It’s none of my business, so I’ll shut up now. ?

I appreciate your concern. There will always be risks. My husband is doing all the grocery shopping now, and if schools are reopened before community spread is under control, I will have to transfer to an online-only position. I’m trying to balance all that with my mental health. Hopefully, I’m finding a reasonable balance!

Don’t know if you’ll see this Robin, but you are right to wait. I think most businesses are trying recoup lost income, sadly. Also, dental offices use equipment that can aerosolize secretions, water, etc. Those micro particles can be suspended in air for quite a long time if they are not exhausted out into the atmosphere.

The gym is basically open on one side, with windows all along one wall. I think it’s as good as ventilation can be in such a circumstance.

I assume you’re not doing the kind of pilates that requires all the machines and thingys? Seems like there’s lots of varieties out there, some more equipment heavy than others.

I have a reformer machine at home, but not all the accessories, which really should be used with a trainer. (my desk job does a number on my posture!) Mat Pilates is VERY good and very intense to start, then the reformer really helps with core and alignment. Because I am not at my work campus, I can’t use the studio in Wilsonville, I have been following a couple of online trainers. I am thinking of joining Firebrand Studios in the fall.

Earth Mother EDP today from a generous NSTer. ? Love this one…definitely more oomph than the oil. Reminds me of Narciso Rodriguez For Her in some ways with more patchouli and added sage. I need to make a list of what perfume I want to buy for the rest of the year to see if my remaining perfume budget can accommodate it. Debating if I sell some bottles on EvilBay if I can add that to my perfume budget as well…somewhat logical somewhat not…eahehe??

Also trying not to order lipsticks w/ the various sales going on for Nat’l Lipstick Day (technically tomorrow I think) this week…but it is sorely tempting w/ some of the deals.?

And oh my, that travel tea set is wonderful. I truly don’t need it, but very tempting. And wow, the price is reasonable.

We had geese when I was a kid. They were the best watch”dogs,” honking like made as soon as a car approached the house. My little brother was nipped often, but I was so frightened of them that I kept my distance. And the mess in the yard (they had a large pen, but wandered at will) — ick.

The eggs were often taken by snakes, so our population dwindled, and one year we returned from a holiday visit to my grandmother to find that all were gone — with evidence that they had been shot, either for sport or (we hope) for food.

I had an anxiety filled meeting this morning, which I don’t think ended in my favor. It was over the phone, so I was able to wear Tobacco Vanille. I love it, plus it makes me feel cool to wear it. Cool as in Fonzi, not temperature cool.?
All I can do is keep smelling good ans keep laughing. It’s better than stinking and crying!

Gosh, sorry about the meeting! I sometimes feel *certain types* of people are letting out their inner ugly right now, adding insult to injury during a very stressful time for everyone. I don’t know why this is, on a psychological level. You’d think we’d all be a bit more gentle with others right now…

The other day at the gas station, a guy came in and asked for a cup of water. The clerk says he has to pay 25 cents. He didn’t have it, and she says he can’t have the water! I, of course gave him the quarter. But I thought that was just rotten of the clerk to be so insensitive. There was probably fifty pennies in the little coin jar she could have used if she was so worried about the company losing money. Empathy is a lost virtue, it seems.

See, that’s just a nasty person. I may be judging, but I don’t care. I used to frequent a Dunkin’ Donuts back home and regularly saw the same homeless looking woman sitting in the same chair, so one day I sat next to her and started talking to her. Yep, she was homeless, and yurns out that DD would give her a free bagel and coffee almost every morning. ❤️
She would sit there and charge her phone and then be in her way. When the zombie apocalypse happens, I’m heading to that DD because there’s good people there.

Azemour for me today — my decant was calling, after not wearing it for some time. Supposed to be hot here today (“hot” has a different meaning in Cascadia) — only 26 or 27 C but still quite toasty for here. I shouldn’t complain as just last week we were all annoyed at the fact that summer hadn’t yet arrived. I’m going to get out of the house to get another coffee, then sit in the back yard to work while it’s still cool outside.

I’d be willing to trade for a day, but probably not more! (I can’t take the humidity any longer — I’m a weenie when it comes to humidity.) My relatives back East have said it’s been bad this year. Meanwhile, CBC ran an article last week on how this is the latest start to summer in the last 30 years here in BC.

Oooh, jealous that you’ve been to YT — I’ve never been. It’s crazy how big BC is, and seems we always leave the country for vacation. I tried to plan a trip to northern BC when I had to scrap our major bucket list trip this summer, but even that didn’t happen due to travel restrictions. We made do in southern BC, which is nothing to sneeze at, I know! Do continue to fight the good fight down there, though. 😀

    Oh summer, where art thou?

60 degrees out, and grey. I’m in Boy, which fits my chill! Feeling the need for LAVENDER, last night I ordered 500 long stems of French lavender from my favorite purveyor on Etsy, and am looking forward to sprucing up the joint once it arrives.

Yesterday I finally put together a project I’ve been planning for a friend. I decanted ten 2 ml samples, labeling them 1 -10. I provided a key, in a sealed envelope. The key lists the numbers with the corresponding perfume names, houses, notes (per the house), and cost per ml. My friend and her college-age daughter love perfume, so I thought it would be a fun activity for them to do together. Testing the samples and writing down what they think they smell, rating each, ranking them, guessing the cost… etc. The only fly in the ointment is that belatedly I realized that my focus on woodsy/wood pudding scents was a reflection of how cold it is here. They are in Providence, which hit a high of 96 yesterday. Wonder how the ouds, patchoulis, and smoky vetivers will do in that climate?

No affiliation–but I have been ordering from this woman since 2012! On Etsy, her business is called paulajeansgarden. She is really great about getting back to you quickly if you have a question. I wanted very long stems, so I consulted with her about which type of lavender would work best, etc. etc.

It’s been a week and the kitties are in foster, being reared lovingly (it’s kill shelters here, and from what they told me with the pandemic, the uprisings here in Portland and it just being a time of reproduction for cats, they simply do not have the resources to hold on to kittens and raise them- so people ‘foster’ kittens and raise them so that they can be well loved house cats). My hope to catch Mom Cat when she comes by (she was truly meowing and looking for her kittens) and get her spayed.

Well, I had to look up Obazda! Looking at photos, I thought that would be fun party dip sort of thing. Then I remembered that it will be a while before any parties with dips happen again in my neck of the woods. Do you put butter in yours?

      And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Copper again. I think this is one of my most-worn perfumes even though it is not really a winter scent. It is just a good daily scent, I think.

Nice to have an “old reliable” in the perfume wardrobe. Especially if it is a 4-season one.

Good for you Kanuka, something that works so often is a lucky gem. I am dying to get my sample of that one! I love the bottle too. It sounds just like what I’d imagine, somehow a scent you can live in and just feels like you. A natural easy fit.

Well, I have National Milk Chocolate Day covered, since I’ve already been in the chocolate stash today. I have Marjorie Rose to thank for one of my favorite chocolate bars, Endangered Species Smooth + Creamy Milk Chocolate. It tastes more like a dark chocolate with a hint of caramel in it to me, which is a bonus.

SOTD = back in Wrappings again today. It makes this horrid, sticky weather tolerable. But both cats are enjoying the weather… they seek out the warmest places in the house, and pout a bit when the A/C comes on. ??

Yum! That is an excellent bar of chocolate! Is that from my New Years Resolution to eat more chocolate?! I forgot I’d posted about that. ???

If you see the Endangered Species at your Wegman’s, give it a try. You might like it… I sure was surprised by it!

Not too bad. Two steps forward one step back. I think I try to do too much and then stuff hurts. How’s Alex, ear mostly healed? Margins clean? He’s so lucky you noticed it.

The travel tea set reminded me of this book: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/90740 for the intrepid steampunk traveler who still wishes to have a proper cup of tea on their travels. 😀

    Happy reading!
