Thursday scent of the day 7/16

Posted by Robin on 16 July 2020 247 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also World Snake Day. Birthdays today: Ida B. Wells, Ginger Rogers, Cal Tjader, Anita Brookner, Will Ferrell. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm finally getting some community project points in Arielle Shoshana Sunday.

Reminder: on 7/17, we're doing Nouveau Niche, updated...wear a perfume from a new (2015+) niche brand. (A repeat from 2015.) A partial list of brands collected from readers (I did not verify all the founding dates!) plus a few I managed to think of myself: Eris Parfums, Arielle Shoshanna, Goldfield and Banks, Carine Roitfeld, Gallivant, Altaia, Floraiku, Vilhelm Parfumerie, Chris Rusak, Parle Moi de Parfum, Parfums Dusita, Heretic, Skylar, Essential Parfums, Blocki, Hermetica, Marc-Antoine Barrios, Sylvaine Delacourte, Mizensir, Floral Street, Cire Trudon, Sana Jardin, Pont des Arts, St. Clair, Jorum Studio, Füm Fragrances, Areej Le Doré.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Paper Soap from J-Scent, which works for the cp and is work friendly.

Oh it was so cool and the air so sweet last night. I slept and slept. My robe has dregs of Eve and Indochine on it.
I’m taking a paid sick day off for a zoom doctor appt. and then have the rest of the day to do whatever. A long walk, maybe a nap. Stretch across the bed and read.
    Post shower maybe some Chinatown.

I am in Chanel’s Gardenia but like Boy, it fades fast on me. so I will either add more or switch to Shalimar or another Chanel, maybe Boy again.

    Perfume related question/advice:

There is a possibility that I may be able to get the Shalimar limited edition bottle, so my question or advice is, should I try my shot at this or should I save my pennies and wait for the flanker to come out this fall. The bottle is just with the EdP, it’s not a special formulation, just a prettier bottle. I wouldn’t be able to afford both, especially with my recent purchase during Macys Black Friday sale where I splurged on all things Shalimar.

          You must have this bottle!
As much as you love and wear Shalimar, you will have to repurchase anyway.

I vote get the bottle. I still have my first empty bottle of Joy.
When I was young, my mother wore Shalimar. Every Christmas, my uncle gave her the bottle. It sat on her dressing table with Arpege and few others and she would just about be out of it when it was time for a new gift. It’s a wonderful memory of an unspoken promise that went on for years.
          Get the bottle.

The bottle is really pretty. If you want it for the sake of the design, I would get it (before it’s gone) and buy the flanker later. Or hint to Santa that the flanker would be a great holiday present.

The bottle is dreamy and someone may split the new flanker too or you could a sample of it too…supposed to be more vanilla which gets me excited but one never knows until that first sniff if it’s a winner but the LE bottle is a winner for sure.

Opposing POV – I dunno, seeing as you already have the EDP, I’d wait for the flanker in the Fall and see what that one is like.

Keep in mind, I’m saying this as someone who has four backup bottles of Fendi, 😯

I’m in the limited edition camp. It is gorgeous and you know you love it. The flanker is for tomorrow—an unknown, maybe wonderful, but maybe meh. Buying that bottle for yourself is truly a treat, not really a commodity. Somehow, saving for a future item in case you like it seems totally appropriate for a kitchen counter–but not for the sweet dreams of fragrance. Celebrate today, because who knows what tomorrow may bring.

I guess I’d say go for bottle if, as dottieNC mentioned, you are still thinking about it after this much time. The flanker will be around for awhile…no rush and I’m sure you can get a split or samples.

Hair appt. went well yesterday for the most part. I’m using a new salon and I get partial highlights with a cut. I really like this guy but yesterday he overdid it with the toner and I had very pale lavender hair for about 15 minutes – yikes! He quickly corrected it but, 4 shampoos & cream rinses later (not to mention major neck pain) I left with a lovely cut and nearly-perfect blond highlights. Did the temp check on arrival and all in masks so happy about that. Years and years of doing highlights and this was a first for me with the purple. For a brief moment I thought about keeping it to be hip and cool and all, but I’m just not that 🙂

wooow — royal blue is quite a commitment! I’ve got a few friends with bright colors in chunks for the hair underneath so it pokes out here and there. I think this would be Ok for me.

You’re brave to go with the new salon! I desperately need to find someone new, but not sure if I’ll be able to switch salons given the pandemic. So instead I’m just growing it out; I hate myself with long hair, but at least I can pull it back. I guess it helps that I don’t colour my hair — things would be more urgent then. But purple (or royal blue) highlights would be more fun than the grey highlights I have, and I guess now would be the time if ever to try them. 🙂

Oh, I had a hair mishap this week, picked the wrong shade of hair color at the drug store. Normally, I dye my hair golden light brown with a copper/red tone.
I accidentally picked one with a blue/red undertone and it turned out red/violet. OOPS. 😯

It will grow out and it’s not the end of the world, but it gave me a laugh. 🙂

I once asked my guy to go a bit more red. By which I meant deeper copper. Well….I ended up with the purple red of Sharon Osborne, which was absolutely not what I wanted. Thankfully, red fades. But, ugh.

Finally some CP points for me too. Olibere Parfums Midnight Spirit. According to Fragrantica, this house released their first perfume in 2014, but according to Basenotes it happened in 2015. I am siding with BN, because it suits me. 🙂
The main notes I am getting are vetiver and cedar. The scent starts as fresh woody (walking in a forest and coming across a freshly cut tree) but gets warmer and darker – a bit smoky, a bit spicy. There is some oud here, but not much, so oud haters should be fine.
    I like it so far.

Another day, another zoom job interview. I’m wearing No. 5 L’Eau again. I’m starting to like zoom interviews – I don’ t have to look polished from head to toe, no fancy shoes are required, and I don’t have to fret about whether my perfume will offend anyone or make them sick. (I also have no idea if my work pants even fit right now, and I don’t have to worry about it either!)

Have a great and fragrant day. Stay cool (or warm if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere)!

I only have two for the CP, so I guess I’ll go with Sunday today. I wore Saturday earlier this week when it was sunny and briefly summer. Today’s not shaping up that way. I’ll need something comforting to sniff while I go stand in line for an hour to return the backpacking gear that took a month to arrive after I ordered it, and arrived one day after we left to go backpacking. MEC (Canada’s REI) has not been my friend lately.

Finally getting some CP points with all the indies I’ve collected!
Memo Paris Inlé for me today, which I’m loving at first sniff. It’s incredibly delicate on my skin, and surprisingly more osmanthus and artemisia than jasmine.

Woke up in Narciso Rodriguez for her today. Still a no go for me. I finished another candle last night but have 2 more arriving today. BBW is starting to release their fall offerings. I am in Clinique Happy right now. It’s the only one I can tolerate today with this heat and humidity. We have some thunderstorms that are supposed to be coming and some are probably going to be severe. We do need some rain though.

I started the day with Hiram Green Vivacious from the split meet, a lovely soft violet that opens with spicy carnation and settles with a buttery orris. If I go through the decant quickly, I’ll consider buying a full bottle.

After a workout and shower, I put on Jo Malone body lotion in Nectarine Blossom and Honey followed by Viktoria Minya Hedonist. I’ve been wearing Hedonist for 7 days straight, since my bottle arrived.

I enjoyed my sample of Arielle Shoshana Sunday, although it’s not something I would regularly wear.

Perfect in every way, (the horns! The absolute joy! The outfits! The sound!) It time warps me back to being 9 years old, setting the dinner table, my mom’s stirring her simmering spaghetti sauce as we listen to this on the radio. We start dancing the Bump as my dad blows through the back door in a blast of Chicago winter fridgitity and diesel fumes. Ah, the good old day! I miss them.

Is Berdoues considered niche? I’ve lost track… Anyway, Selva do Brasil (2015) from a sample that I’m just going to keep in my pocket and replenish throughout the day. Good summer scent.

Tried to go to our local Italian last night and eat outside. They just reopened. Timing was off…it was obvious a whole bunch of people had the same idea in the nice weather last night. It was okay. I had some salmon and fresh corn at home ready to go. We may try again this evening. We are supposed to have a Zoom dinner with friends in CA, but we might make it dessert on our end.

SOTD = St. Clair Song of Aubrac

With the CP all week and happy as can be to be compliant.

In other news, as I’ve been walking after work and taking note of surroundings, there’s a yard in front of a condo where I’ve seen mushroom (beige ones with brown watercolor wash, not like this pretty ?). Anyway, the next day, they were gone, a few days later, I saw more and the following day, it looked like someone kicked them around. My question: do mushrooms grow in places where animals poop and that is what fertilizes the spores? Asking for a friend (ha, that be me ?).

A lot of fungi grow in relation to a specific tree so it might be that if you are seeing them in a yard they may be partnered to a nearby tree ( just as perfume bottles are most concentrated in the exclusive boutiques of their manufacturing houses) …the pretty red fungi with white dots ( for e.g.) often grow with pines, boletes can grow with birches, morelles are often near ash trees etc etc. But some fungi do prefer dung- but I think mostly herbivores like cows, sheep, horses (but you would need to check carnivores. I am not sure about dog and cat ) But when they grow in faeces they have to send their spores far and wide once they have fruited . So, first I would check out the trees for clues. Also some fungi only fruit for a couple of hours. There are so many “little brown stalky fungi” that you might need to look up what you see on a fungi site.

Just to be a bit clearer, I believe the spores are carried by the animals and then grow out from the excreted poop rather than being ‘fertilised’ by It

Wow, way way more complex than growing them hydroponically! Thanks and it sounds like I will leave it to the experts to pick them. I have to walk by another spot where I saw them on tree trunks. IIRC, they were yellowish.

Another sunny and warm day, I’m wearing Acqua Viva. I am so tempted to try the Heretic sampler set, having not spent much money except for medical bills over the past four months. But they are naturals, and I worry about longevity. Can anyone tell me about that?

I just wanted to to smell green and fresh, so Untitled L’Eau it was this morning. I am contemplating a Brompton bike for train commute, hope to find a dealer for a test drive.

I’m not CP compliant this week. Yesterday I wore Chanel Paris-Riviera and today I have on Paris-Venise, both from samples.

Yesterday my nephew dislocated his shoulder playing golf, on the very first hole. Not a fun day it turns out. He originally dislocated it a few months ago playing hockey so there is a weak spot somewhere. He is fixed up for now thankfully; he lives out of province and was down to visit his Mom and Dad. I feel for him because I dislocated mine 4 times before I got the surgery for it.

Having gone through four or more hip dislocations (I’m trying to suppress their memory), I can empathize fully. There’s just nothing like that pain accompanied by the feeling that your body has fallen apart. Is it Hamlet or Macbeth who says “The time is out of joint”? If you have yourself been out of joint you appreciate what he means much more fully.

Hello, all! Chanel 5 l’Eau today. I did realize I have some samples to wear for the CP, but saving them for tomorrow. Went to the dermatologist for my annual skin check this morning. I’ve had several basal cell skin cancers removed in the past. I get very anxious about it – one of the surgeries was on my forehead and that was even less fun.

However, today all was well and I’m celebrating with a beer tonight.

Robin you can add Areej Le Doré to the list, as Thegoddessrena pointed out yesterday. Launched on 2017. I don’t have any FB’s but have tried quite a few samples and am always impressed, if not smitten. Russian Adam makes things that are potent and opulent and doesn’t need to follow IRFA restrictions (info from Kafkaesque). I’m wearing his Flux de Fleurs today.

I looked up banksia yesterday and they are in the protea family. I tend to think of banksia having ‘bottle brush’ type flowers whereas proteas have a kind of globe artichoke type flower, with soft furry threads inside. Funny about the methodists. My granny ( not on the Primitive Methodist side) became a staunch methodist around WW2 , in Manchester. I think the American Revolution had quite an impact on US methodists??

To be honest, I don’t know the answer to that. My mom took some actual classes at church on the history of Methodism and read a biography of the Wesley brothers, so she would have known, but unfortunately can’t access that knowledge any more. My ancestors came over, as far as we believe at least, from Scotland, and more in the early to mid-1800s. That’s interesting about the banksias. I was amazed when I saw them in Australia, and I like the things made from their pods.

We’re away for the weekend, visiting my beloved’s sister for her 60th birthday. We’re driving up today, Friday, so it’s a day off work. It turned out to be a bad time for a day off, so yesterday was crazy, but it always seems to be that way. I’ve decided to scent the trip with Map of the Heart Gold Heart – founded in 2014, so CP adjacent 🙂
I’m still deciding what else to take with me.

    SotD = Luci ed Ombre

still in love with this perfume. Today I have 2 dabs on one arm from an almost empty sample, 2 sprays on the other arm from the bottle. Subtle differences appear — the dabs are more floral, the spray has more incense. Both make my brain happy. 😀

This morning I went to visit my mom and dad at their home. Mom is trying hard to avoid illness as they are both in their 70s and Dad has chronic health problems. She has been reluctant to have me visit for more than a few minutes. Sigh, I miss them both.

But today I invented an urgent sewing project and asked to use her sewing machine. I suggested I work outside on her covered backyard patio. For four hours we sat and sewed and chatted and snacked in the cool breeze with butterflies, dragonflies, and hummingbirds flitting past. Lizards lounged on the sun-warmed brick fence. Rosemary and lavender perfumed the air.

While I got ready to depart Mom went to the kitchen to get a few slices of apple pie (her favorite) for me to take home to share with my family. I put on my mask to check the fit becaue I needed to stop at the grocery store on my way home.

When mom handed me the apple pie I stepped in closer and gave her a big, long hug. I moved back and said, “Ooops, sorry, I forgot to distance! thank you for the pie.” 😀 I’m sure she wasn’t fooled. I’ve been longing for a mom hug for months.

Blursday hugs to everyone, you smell delightful.
