Thursday scent of the day 7/9

Posted by Robin on 9 July 2020 239 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! Birthdays today: Oliver Sacks, Tom Hanks. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm quite happily in L'Artisan Parfumeur Ananas Fizz.

Reminder: 7/10 is Piña Colada Day. Wear a perfume with pineapple, coconut, rum, or any combination of the three.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Eek!! I don’t even remember if I tried the Music Neutre!! LOL ?.
I don’t think so. I tried Duality oil a while back but I don’t think the oils have the same effect as the EDPs which I prefer.
Singularity is clean, fresh and a bit soapy. My nose really hones in on the lily of the valley. The friend who sent it says that her friend says it smells like Dial soap in the best possible way. Hahaha! Maybe that’s why I like it!!

SL Un Bois Vanille with a coconut note for the cp.
Watched another ‘80’s flick, Some Kind of Wonderful last night on prime. I hadn’t seen that one in ages. Not John Hughes’ best work- imho- but watchable. It had a decent soundtrack, I’d almost forgotten about Flesh for Lulu and Charlie Sexton.

But I am still on my cheap as chips soap kick. Have Tone in the bathtub which I bought at my local supermarket for 50 cents a bar. Now I am reading that it’s d/c?? And Olay Birch and Lavender which is equally as wonderful. Heading my way is a bar of Vitabath green gelee which I threw into a birthday order I made for a family member because I had 30 percent off…. got more hand sanitizer too but it’s for her. Robin, you’ve earned A LOT of enabler pins for turning me back on to Vitabath!!!

Oh I may just buy two sets of the six packs LOL. They are only $2.99 which is 50 cents per bar!!

The green gelee was a staple in our house in the 70s. I bought a gift pack ( which comes with lotion and pouf sponge) for my mom and the Spa Scent which is marine in a gift pack for one Marzipan and the Orchid one in a gift pack for another Marzipan plus two body washes, a delicious hand soap ( can’t remember the name but it’s a gourmand) and another hand sanitizer because they fit beautiful in the cup holder of a car and I want my daughter to have one available at all times…and then I threw in a bar soap of the green gelee scent for me……I guess Robin get 20 pins?? LOL ?

Yes, Mom saw online that Tone soap had been discontinued, so she had me buying six-packs of it whenever I saw it in a grocery store for much of April and May. :) It’s just about the only soap she knows she’s not allergic to, so she wanted a stockpile that would last her a while.

Shalimar cologne, but the new(er) version

Today I am having two friends over for tea. This is a first for me since the shut down. We will go on the balcony and discuss some books we have all read.
Last night a made an Arabic pudding for todays tea date, it has both orange and rose water in it, and I will crush some pistachios to sprinkle on top. I love anything with rose water in it, it makes my taste buds go wild.

Between the rose water pudding and the Shalimar, I think I have seduced myself. :) ;) basta così..

Somehow a bottle of the lotion and the EDP that is on sale ended up in cart. I hesitated with the shower gel because my skin does well only with gently cleansers and soaps.

I am happy when I get off work tonight, I will have a 3 day weekend. Tomorrow we are getting rain and some cooler temps and I can’t wait. Spent the morning in ISM. I was thinking of wearing Jicky today but after smelling the cap, I noped out of that. Too soon after my grandmother’s death to wear it. It was the last perfume I wore when I visited her before she passed. I will be wearing Zagorsk instead.

    SOTD: Essential Parfums Divine Vanille

Second cup of coffee as I lost 2+ hours of sleep last night due to more fireworks (just the loud sound, no pretty explosion of colors). Probably more like sticks of dynamite being set off. I really feel for the parents with young kids and the animals scared out of their wits.

Looking forward to tonight’s virtual wine tasting hosted by my company. Appreciate the effort to provide fun activities for us to enjoy even if we can’t get together in person.

        Orange/santal sounds amazing!

I like it. Great performance and leans more tonka-ish without heavy tonka. I wish the incense was more prominent on me but it’s there if I ‘look’ for it. The opening is the best part, in my opinion, must be the osmanthus as you get a fruity/citrus smell.
For the price, it’s a great buy.

In Lolita Lempicka Fleur de Corail because it was mentioned here and it really is a quintessential beach scent. Salty flowers and something like suntan lotion. Perfect for a sweltering summer day here in the Banana Belt of Virginia.

Hardy Bananas can take our winters and the summers here in Southeastern Virginia are beyond sweltering. I can leave Taro bulbs in the ground, just mulch well. It is very rare to have temperatures below freezing in the winter. I have observed the slow creep of rising temperatures in this region for a long time. I used to have to pull all the tropical houseplants back in by Halloween. Now, it is more like the end of November.

Amouage Lyric Woman. I’ve been wearing this every day since my bottle arrived last week, even though the weather has been in the 90s. I’m surprised that I have to reapply once or twice during the day (I thought it would have more staying power) but it’s nice to slip away to my bedroom – and away from my young kids – for a bit of beauty.

For the CP, I have Yosh Ginger Ciao and Lubin Idole but neither appeal to me in the oppressive heat so I’m wearing Etro Messe di Minuit today. Love incense in hot weather, it’s like wearing my own little air conditioner.

Fiance left the house at the crack of dawn to go on a bajillion-mile bike ride, so I’m wearing Zoologist Bee! Two sprays, which is a lot of this one (for me). I smell great.

I’ve had a lot of trouble sleeping lately because I’ve been coughing like crazy all night. I have no trouble at all during the day but something about nighttime or the lying-down position is problematic. The Internet suggested steam breathing and saline up my nose, but those didn’t work. Tonight I’ll try a salt water gargle and/or a Neti pot. I don’t want to prop my head higher up, because that isn’t a comfortable sleeping position for me. Robitussin doesn’t even work; it just makes it so that I’m extra tired in the morning after not having slept :( Any tips on how to get this cough to stop? It’s extra bad because I’m a singer and coughing really damages your throat!

If you start coughing as soon as you lie down, that is a sign of a post nasal drip and a steroid nasal spray would be your best bet. If you only start coughing around 2-3 am (when your cortisol levels are at their lowest), you could have asthma. Either way, best to see at least a family physician and for them to do a peak flow.

Maybe it’s just an exacerbation of your asthma. If you don’t have daytime problems or exercise induced symptoms, you can probably sit it out using your usual medication. Hope it passes soon!

Try some mild herbal tea with honey, or just very warm water with honey, right before bed. My Dr’s office gave me that instruction when I had a bad cough recently and it worked very well. Sorry about the interrupted sleep, that’s the worst.

hiya, koyel, sorry about the cough! A family member had a similar problem with night coughing, we thought it might be allergies, but the usual remedies didn’t work. Oddly, or coincidentally, the cough stopped when we elevated the head of the bed a few inches to help with acid reflux, weird but true. Hope you find your fix soon. I used to teach vocal music at an elementary school, so I know how a cough can derail the singing voice.

I finished day 28 with Chloe Ting on Tuesday. She suggests 7 days off to recover. I’m thinking 7 weeks would be good, lol. Thanks for sharing Chloe with me. I do feel stronger, and my super narrow rock star jeans are a little easier to zip up now. :D I’m gonna hang with Adrien and her new-ish Home yoga video series next. Please let me know if a new exercise guru finds you!

I was thinking of giving myself a two-week break, but I may reevaluate later :) Good for you for being stronger and having an easier time to zip your jeans! Davidoff Zino from the husband’s stash. I tried Coromandel once and liked it, but don’t remember too much about it and couldn’t really say whether these two are twins. Zino is very easy to wear, though.

This is one of my favorite fragrances. Every patchouli lover should have at least a sample. I wish I could do a side by side with Coromandel too. Does Coromandel list rosewood as a note?

    Another rainy, and chilly day.
I had to switch on the light in my work space (it was so dark outside) and I almost turned on the heating, but decided knitwear was a better and faster solution ?

    SotD is Arso
Again, not cp worthy. But so good!

It didn’t feel quite as cold today as it did yesterday. I went for a very rainy walk with a friend yesterday morning. The good part is that chances of meeting anyone are very slim.

I’m in Eau des Merveilles today.
Will try to find something with rum in it for tomorrow. I may have a sample of Idole or Frapin somewhere. No pineapple or coconut in my collection.
    Take care everybody!

Seville à l’Aube. I’m a bit surprised my hand gravitated to this, since it’s hot and humid again. I usually would want something less lush.

Jealous. My sister pulled the trigger and got an ebike yesterday. Said it’s a game changer. Went on a 9 mile ride yesterday and was thrilled it didn’t bother her knees or anything.

I’ve realized that I find it difficult to talk about my daily choice of scent without referencing either the weather, the season, or whatever’s afoot with my internal landscape — the decision about how to smell is so closely linked with these things. I’ve been commando for a few days after my partner of 10 years and father of my very young child dropped a bombshell on me that he’s moving out and had already rented another house. One of those devastating times in life that you don’t really want to create scent-memories around. Feeling a bit more grounded today and I’m back in a single spritz of Lys Mediterranee, headed out for a walk in the woods with a girl friend.

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant

Because jalapeño wore it the last 2 days and it is one of my favorite from this line!

In other news, we now have one matched pair for the Bruno Fazzolari ScentBridge Samples Program!!! They know who they are and they are off to the races! If you’re interested in getting a customizable 3-sample set for $9 (including shipping), I will try to match you with an interested party who will get the exact same set for another $9. More information on the matching can be found in my post from this past weekend’s Lazy Weekend Poll around the 12:23pm Eastern mark. Because this is only good for July, I’ve asked for emails to be sent to me by tomorrow. I am actually going to extend it to this upcoming Sunday, July 12th so we can have more participation to increase the chance of a match. Also, everyone who participates, even if you end up not being matched, will be entered into a random drawing for a perfume thing (from my stash); definitely read the rules before participating. I think it’s a really good way to explore the line for a very reasonable cost.

Wearing Bronze Goddess creme, eau fraiche and a few sprays of the oil in the ends of my hair. Very trying day so far! Seems as though our supervisor was poached for another department.

But the good news is I made a hair appointment for next week and I also booked next week off for holidays!

Yes! They have stringent protocols with cleaning before each client can enter the building; and we both have to mask up. I haven’t had a cut since November so I can’t wait!

Yep. Same thing with masks for me. And I will have to sign a waiver and have my temperature taken. The place I go to has installed a high tech air filtration system, and might even be using one of those UV-emitting robots after close of business.

    SotD = Cologne du 68

Guerlain claims there are 68 notes in this cologne. I don’t think there is any coconut, pineapple, or rum. After typing those three words I’m wondering who will be indulging in a tropical drink or three tomorrow? It will be friYAY after all.

Hurray and happy birthday wishes for Tom Hanks and Dr. Oliver Sacks. I admire them both for their work and for their concern for other people. Sacks’ The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat is one of a very few books I can read over and over again. Forrest Gump had me sitting in a movie theater completely undone, the tears and sobs would not stop.

I need to watch a Hanks movie — what’s your favorite?

Maybe I’ll do Sleepless in Seattle, love the music in that one. It has one of my favorite soundtracks. I’ve been trying to work up the nerve to watch Cloud Atlas, but I’m not feeling up to a three hour story today.

Don’t know who needs to hear this, but I feel the need to say it —

    stay safe,
    wash your hands,
    I love you. :D

The Money Pit. The scene where the bathtub goes thru the floor always makes me laugh so hard I cry. (If you’ve ever done a big remodel — especially if you’ve lived in the house DURING the big remodel — you will know that this film is a documentary, not just entertainment…)

Cast Away is so good and so hard for me to watch. The internal struggle is as big as the outward physical battle.

And The Post! that’s the one with Meryl Streep (who I also adore) and I don’t think I ever saw it. On the watch list it goes. :)

I put on a bit of Shalimar (edt, I think, from a Nordie’s sample) before a going to a doctor’s appointment this morning. I keep thinking I should order a bottle of lemony-er Shalimar Cologne — but do I actually want the Cologne, or the Eau de Cologne? I get confused about which to choose and then inertia overtakes me.

Thanks, Yasmina — I had to go watch that video! :) Long ago I had a sample of Shalimar Light, which I loved. (I envy Madame Persolaise her bottle of Eau Legere, sigh…) I haven’t tried the Eau de Cologne before, but it’s relatively inexpensive. Maybe a blind buy wouldn’t be so bad.

Happy day all! A few more samples down from the chocolate/confectionary haul. Arielle Shoshana Sunday was interesting, I liked the warm cooked rice note, but something else in it, mabey the matcha?, wasn’t as pleasing. Demeter chocolate chip cookie was fun. The chocolate in ganache chocolate wasted was a nice brownie scent, but went straight to baby powder. The winner so far though is the very Un-Chocolatey Serge Rahat Loukoum, really loving that almond/cherry note, so that’s going on the mabey list. Sigh, it’s always the most expensive/hardest to find ones that I like when it comes to Serge Lutens. More samples to go, mostly coffee or sweets of some sort. Will probably try and wear Bronze Goddess tomorrow for a break and to take part in this weeks theme. ?

I liked the rice and tea notes in Arielle Shoshana Sunday. I tend to go for green tea notes. :)

My friends and I have had fun trying Demeter fragrances, including Chocolate Chip Cookie.

I got a sample of SL Rahat Loukoum last year, and fell in love with that. I certainly don’t need a big bottle of it, but I’ll have to investigate whether I can get a small bottle or travel spray of it when life has gotten a little more “back to normal.”

SotD EldO Like This from a small sample. Somehow the combination of pumpkin and immortelle on me reads as fresh strawberries. I am not mad.

I’m veering towards sweeter scents this week for some reason – maybe in need of a little olfactive comfort.

I’m late again today. Just various distractions and news stories to follow. You who are parents, or you who are teachers, I really feel for you in these difficult times where issues about kids’ return to school are so difficult and divisive. I’m extra glad to be retired now. SOTD is Mure et Musc because someone mentioned it recently. Very pleasant and summery. It’s always seemed quite light to me despite the musk.

Definitely empathizing with the teachers right now. I’m not sure how anyone can rationalize sending kids (common silent spreaders) who cannot/will not wear masks to schools to be taught my middle/older teachers (vulnerable population) that probably have co-morbidities. Just absolutely insane.

    Good evening!

This morning: The Naked Bee Coconut & Honey lotion. I don’t get a strong scent from it, but I find it pleasant. :)

This evening: Tried HdP 1804. I thought the top note was nice, but then it started smelling smoky to me. Appropriate enough for the cigar-smoking Georges Sand, but not my kind of thing. I think I liked the Casanova and Colette fragrances better. :)

I totally would have spritzed on some SL Un Bois Vanille. :) I love that one. I was thinking about what vanilla fragrances I have that had rum or coconut notes. Something for tomorrow, maybe. :)

I wonder what mix of notes make me think of cigar or cigarette smoke with some fragrances. Maybe it’s patchouli + musk, or patchouli + a spice I interpret as bitter?

I’m also still wondering why I get what seems to me to be a “Play-Doh” sort of note with some fragrances. Maybe almond + musk, or fruit + a light musk, or fruit/white musk/powder? I know that that’s what came across to me in several Ormonde Jayne perfumes.

Oh, well. That’s about as deeply as I can think at this hour. lol!

Have a good night. I hope Friday and the weekend are days you get to hunker down and do relaxing and pleasant activities around the house. :)
