Thursday scent of the day 6/25

Posted by Robin on 25 June 2020 226 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Global Beatles Day. Birthdays: George Orwell, James Meredith, Carly Simon, Anthony Bourdain. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm trying out Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Hot Masala. It's every bit as soothing and delicious as Jessica said it would be.

Reminder: on 6/26, wear a perfume by Une Nuit Nomade, Ulrich Lang, Vilhelm Parfumerie or Vero Profumo if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letters U or V.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I got tested for covid because I have a cough, fever, congestion + exposure but I don’t have it, thank goodness. Just a nasty cold. I’m sitting here gathering up my energy to take a shower and will wear Bas de Soie afterwards, Portia has a lovely review on Perfume Posse today. My neighbor has a blooming tree right outside my porch that smells wonderful through the open windows, I wish I knew what kind it is – the colloquial name is Tree of Heaven.

A friend of ours cut my husband’s hair. We were outside on a deck with a fan blowing, and we all were wearing masks, but she and I sat in her car and talked for a few minutes afterwards. She tested positive for covid a few days later at her job. The state health dept contacted my husband and I a few days after that, so we have been quarantined ever since, then I was showing symptoms so my doctor sent me to get tested. But I don’t have it and I’m feeling better so yay! Thank you all for the well wishes.

No although I’ve seen the tree in the link around here. My neighbor’s tree has big clusters of teensy cream colored flowers about 10″x10″ and they smell like privet hedge, clover and honeysuckle on steroids. They’re also covered in bees due to that powerful scent, which is lovely wafting on a breeze.

Not to dump cold water on you but I would worry about false negatives, they do occur and it could be a problem. I don’t know how feasible it is to be really-tested, but I would, given you were exposed and now have symptoms. Best to ask your doctor.

That is a question for the ages, isn’t it? Why are so many great perfumes discontinued? I know in some cases it’s because ingredients are deemed allergens or they become impossible to source. Everything about Theorama is wonderful including the awesome bottle.

I’ve recently acquired a few of the Hermessence 4ml samples, and today I’m trying Épice Marine. I’m not sure what to say about it. It is definitely marine, but I’m not getting the spices. I don’t know if I like it or not. It isn’t love right off the bat.

Scent of 5am: NV Pichola. After so many years it is still a scrubber on me. To the good-bye pile it went to give company to Carnal Flower.
Post shower I am wearing Amouage Opus VIII. I forgot how much I love this scent. I need to wear it more often.

I took a 20 minute walk to the nearest McDonald’s very early this morning. I had been craving for a caramel frap and an egg mcmuffin. Not a healthy option, but after so many months it was nice going inside, ordering and heading to the park to enjoy my breakfast. It gave me some sense of normalcy and the streets were very quiet at that time. Now, back to work.

They are like canned asparagus — their own flavor / texture combination that has no relationship to the food items they are made off. I love them, have not had one in probably 7 or 8 years.

Thank you! Kafkaesque’s review is the best I have read so far on Opus VIII. It is indeed a very beautiful fragrance that develops continuously in a very unpredictable and astounding way. It surprises and delights me every time I wear it. I am glad I rescued my decant from the back of my cabinet. It will get lots of use now.

I love many of the early Amouage scents, but I fear I’ve never really given the Opus’ a fair shot. I’m turned off by the naming! I can’t keep them in mind, never remember which ones I’ve spritzed, and of course, I’ve only ever tried them on a perfume counter somewhere, since the samples are expensive and can be difficult to come by. I’m sure I’m missing out on something, but for now they all blend together for me.

I am in absolute love with many of the Amouage early scents because they are much better and more complex than the latest releases. I have small decants of some of the Opus and they are all beautiful. I love the brand and like you I wish they were not so expensive.

Hard to believe Bourdain is gone 2 years already. What a loss.

No fragrance just yet but heading in that direction! Slow going this morn. Slept in and still easing into work (nice benefit of working from home).

PB&J on toast for breakfast (burnt the first piece of toast, not a smell that delights!) and creamy, cinnamon-laced coffee.

Neighbors in the apt. above us are moving out so dealing with lots of unpleasant noise today. Nice family but they had no control of their 2 kids so I’m not sad to see them go. Let’s see who moves in next :/

Usually that you’re amazing people for bringing up little ones!

Mr. Teebear and I used to live directly below a family with two kids and on Easter they would always give us a tiny gift basket as “thanks for putting up with the noise.” TRUST, the college kids that moved in afterwards were far noisier! At least they understood when we explained to them that their Dance Dance Revolution parties sounded like the apocalypse from our apartment.

Yup, when I was an apartment dweller, the single mom and three kids below me were better neighbors than the young professionals before them. Noisiest time was bath time, which apparently was an anacceptible chore to one of them, but then it would be done and quiet most evenings after that. Much better than unpreditable dance music blaring into the wee hours of the night and fears they’d fall asleep with candles burning.

New neighbors! I am with you in anticipation. My next door neighbor moved away last weekend. We are not sad. 15 years of noise, noise, noise. 2 kids (one a delight, one… oh so not, and guess which one kept moving back home after ‘growing up’), and 5 untrained dogs. After 15 years of getting cujo’d every time we set foot on our back deck, we are so enjoying the peace and quiet. Hoping the new owners are more pleasant! (or at least have far fewer dogs)

Wow. I can’t imagine a landlord or landlady allowing that many dogs anywhere I’ve rented before. We had trouble finding a place that would accept three cats.

I wore Un jardin après la moussin
But most of it is gone after 9 hours
working in a hot room on a hot day.
I have a cooler but its still not very comfortable.

    For the instagrammers among us,
Hiram Green and Francesca Bianchi are doing a double interview tonight at 9 PM CET

Oops i think i phrased that in a wrong way.
It did not last 9 hours on me, but i had a 9 hour workday and the scent slowly disappeared somewhere along the way… (I think i get a 4-6 hour wear out of it, still not bad)

I’m late commenting but every time I see this perfume name, my poor brain changed it to Mouton and I shudder inwardly.

Just yesterday,I saw an email with the headline “Westco Combats Cyber Security” and I read it S Wombat Cyber.

So this is for Marjorie Rose on the Jude the Obscure David Austin rose: I have one too! And though it is not a cut rose at all (mine just sheds its petals the moment when you cut the stem), the fragrance really is the best ever. Rose plus something citrusy like the smell of a blood orange when you cut into it. Good recommendation for rose lovers.

Hello! Yes, I agree the flowers on the Jude the Obscure rose do not last long as a cut flower. But boy are they magnificent to bury a nose into! I agree there’s something fruity to the fragrance, but I wouldn’t have thought of a blood orange (I rarely have them in my kitchen). Maybe I should buy more blood oranges, because I love the scent!

Vilhelm Veek has been ongoing. Tuesday was Basilico & Fellini (fig and crisp crunchy green-ness), Wednesday was 125th & Bloom (rose and leather and BUCKETS of galbanum), today is Purple Fig (fig and cypress and a little citrus).

    Be well, all!

You might like Morning Chess then. It’s similar to 125th & Bloom (which was apparently previously called Harlem Bloom, dunno why the name change). But not as loud on the galbanum. And no rose.

I have a fresh bag of pepperoni and newly purchased garbanzo bean flour, could make a mini pizza today for lunch!

I’ve been experimenting with different types of gluten-free flours to make gluten-free crackers and GF pizza crust. The clear winner is a mix of cassava, garbanzo bean, and buckwheat flours.
The crackers (I add cheese, because, the more cheese the better) are easy to make and don’t last long in our house.

I used to make “homemade Gatorade” for a line chef I worked with when he’d had a bit too much the night before–watered-down orange juice (sometimes made with sparkling water to help with tummy trouble) and a shake or two of table salt. He thought I was crazy the first time I made it, but afterwards started to ask for it. :D

I feel you on that one! I don’t know if it’s something you’ve looked into but I have always had a heavier/longer shark week and am chronically vitamin D deficient as I work indoors/live in Canada/am the color of fish belly and avoid the sun.

I always thought “eh, what difference could it make? It’s been that way all my life!” but finally this past winter I said “okay, fine let’s take some vitamin D.”

Without changing anything else diet/lifestyle wise my period got a LOT shorter/lighter. Apparently there are in the last few years some studies confirming that vitamin D can help regulate long/irregular menstrual cycles. Just mentioning because no doctor or pharmacist had ever said anything to me!

SOTD is OJ Woman. Haven’t worn it in a while, and man is it gorgeous. Today and tomorrow will contain first outings in months to places other than skulking, off-hours visits to my company’s offices — one is my first in-person pilates session (which will be with masks and my own props), and the other is a long-needed haircut appointment (also with masks and not nearly as much chatting as I would like). Even though I know both venues’ ownership/management is extremely fastidious and careful, I have to admit I’m a little nervous. :O

SOTM is Sunday, which I bought a sample of after Jessica’s review. The first blast is pretty sweet to my nose, but I’m also liking the weird milky-tumeric-rice notes–Like if horchata were made by someone from India. (I know that tumeric isn’t listed as a note, but I’m not getting matcha, which I think of as very grassy and green. Maybe it’s the cinnamon plus matcha that’s translating as curry-like to me?)

I am kind of a sucker for discovery sets and coffrets…especially if they are sprays.?

The sulky soiree is pretty much over…I am now in bitter bash or hostile happy hour mode where I am feeling more anger/frustration and less sadness as I contemplate the universe. ;) :( All fine stages of grief I suppose.

The boyfriend was finally dismissed today and is in relatively good condition. I think he will now love me even more after all the sad meals in hospital, because of my cooking. Zucchini and meatball gratin for dinner.

Yes to, “I think he will now love me even more after all the sad meals”! Made me smile. With some regularity I tell my husband that once he tastes my dinner, he will love me even more. Good meals are like glue, love glue!

The bottle is very nice. I don’t like the juice but I was able to persuade an SA to give me the empty tester. She wasn’t supposed to ?.

And glad the boyfriend is home and in good shape.

We’re having a heatwave, 32 or 33 Celsius today, but there is a breeze and it will be over by tomorrow, so I’m not complaining. In Miller Harris Tea Tonique today, a great refresher.

    SJP Lovely for my Friday.
My college daughter got a job yesterday.? She’s been looking for awhile since the job that she had lined up as camp counselor isn’t happening. I’m sure it’s not her dream job but we’re just happy in this covid economy she found something.

My son has two camp counseling gigs this summer that are both online. He said the first one was very uneven. He wound up doing a lot of origami with the kids. The second gig, next week, is the same session that my younger son is “attending” the “camp.” So, each boy in their own bedroom, on their computers, together at camp. . . it’s a brave new world, or something.

The wind is blasting through the trees and I am sitting up in bed with my wool beanie pulled down over my ears to muffle the noise. Perks of being older:wearing hats and scarves in the house, very badgeresque ( Wind in the Willows). Yesterday, rocked the crowd with the perfume playlist ( add one perfume in this order, every hour or so…or whenever and enjoy) : vierge de fer, songes, sotto la luna tuberose, CDG cinnamon, boucheron, twilly, ambre des merveilles, ambre extreme , al oudh…and sleep! Encore today with a new set list beginning with Mr Li …..

Pleasant weather today, despite having a cloudy sky here. ⛅?

I went to my local grocery store earlier, and I saw 2 people who weren’t wearing face coverings. They had their noses tucked inside their T-shirts, like little kids do when something bad wafts into the air. SMH.

SOTD = back to Rock Crystal EdP. I checked the price of a full bottle, and Yikes! Holy sticker shock! That’s way more than I was expecting.

People are really getting lazy with the masks here. I just went to the gas station and it was very busy, because there is a ice cream shop attached. Counting myself, only about 4 other people had them on.

SotD Kiehl’s Original Musk, just right for a reasonably low-key day!

Yesterday’s Fete St-Jean performance was a success! We were running behind schedule, so I didn’t even get to touch my equipment before performing on it – not ideal after 3 months off! But our socially-distanced audience of ~40 from the immediate neighbourhood were so supportive and so happy we’d contributed to their holiday.

Today was just errands and making Vietnamese bun cha and daikon and carrot pickles, so Mr. Teebear and I can have banh mi for dinner.

I’m in VC&A Orchidee Vanille today. It’s been raining off and on all day, so this is very comforting. It also lasts longer than the others I’ve tried from this house. I decided to hoard the rest of the .7ml sample vial, so this must be serious!

It goes through a brief phase that is a little too sweet, but it’s mostly a nice, vanilla skin scent on me, almost a vanilla wood pudding. I’m seriously lemming this thing.

I forgot a SOTD but wanted to recommend to all who are still reading Bourdain’s show “parts unknown”. We were so sad when we finished watching them – I think he actually passed away when filming an episode in Belgium? I particularly like all the episodes with Eric Ripert in them. Tried an episode of a new show with just Eric, but Eric without Anthony is like corn on the cob without chili lime salt. :( Off to put on some perfume!

I don’t watch enough television to have seen Parts Unknown, but I’ve been tempted to try to get myself to sit long enough to give it a try. Everything I’ve hear, it sounds like my kind of thing. OTOH, I’m hesitant because I know how it ends, so to speak. It’s hard to welcome tragedy into one’s life. . .

It feels more poignant than tragic to me when you watch the show, if that makes sense. Give it a whirl sometime – you don’t even need to watch in order, and some episodes are better than others (loved Georgia, Uruguay, Sichuan, French Alps and Antarctica, felt “meh” about Rome, Greece, and Berlin).
