Wednesday scent of the day 6/17

Posted by Robin on 17 June 2020 282 Comments

Hump Day, plus World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am out of town today, on a quick family visit. I'm commando at the moment, and I probably won't wear perfume until tonight, so I will check in later.

Reminder: on 6/19, we're doing Fantasy Vacation Friday...pick a destination and wear the scent that takes you there. (This is a repeat from 2015.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: I'm featuring paintings by Giovanna Garzoni this week; I became interested in her art after Kevin sent me the article The Baroque Artist Who Captured the World in Her Still Lifes. Shown above is detail from Still Life with Birds and Fruit, c. 1650, via The Cleveland Museum of Art, public domain.

Ah, such a wonderful fragrance. It was originally called Cheverny, which is a beautiful castle near the Loire.
I would just love to visit some châteaux right now.

Oh – I remember visiting th Loire Valley a few years back. I can see myself sporting this to a stroll along one of those vineyards.

I have a few drops left of vintage Gem by Van Cleef & Arpels, and I’m wearing one: a chypre in the eighties style with an overdose of stone fruit (peaches, plums, apricots) in the top and frankly an overdose of everything else you can think of — woods, flowers, spices, animalics, oakmoss. It’s so extreme.

Safe travels Robin and enjoy your family visit.
I’m in Child perfume oil. I’m not usually one for bwf’s but this one is nice and feels like something that should be worn on a hot and humid day like it’s supposed to be today.
    Happy hump day!?

I also have issues with bwfs, but I have always enjoyed Child oil. I guess because it is just so simple, pretty and easier to wear.

Sitting at a cafe in Paris in Grisette by Lubin

    French press coffee

Thrift store OOTD, a coral Ellen tracy dress and shoes to match.
The shoes I bought in the Housing Works on the upper east side, which has closed permanently because of this shut down in NYC (as we are in week 14 of the lockdown). I will keep my political comments to myself.

Thank you, its similar to this dress https://images.app.goo.gl/PnPCKvfCe81oC9wk8

I find that with coral I need to wear bronzer or have a little bit of tan to pull it off.
Like when I wear red, I have to wear makeup or else I look washed out…

Oh no!!! I used to love visiting Housing Works if I had spare time when I would be in NYC. BUMMER.

My family is all in the Philly suburbs, so usually if I have work in NYC my mom will take NJ Transit up to some see me, and lets me drag her around to whatever I’m up to in my off time: mostly local bakeries/coffee shops and thrift stores. I definitely took her there at least once.

Thanks for the kind wishes, a four-mile walk helped. I was able to call my friend and provide a shoulder to vent and cry on. And also will provide her with a few names of physicians who are experts in patients with this diagnosis.

I’m aware of what her new diagnosis entails, it’s going to be difficult, and a steep learning curve, but one step at a time….

    Have a great trip Robin!

I’m wearing Garden of India by Parle Moi de Parfum. I ordered their discovery set a few weeks ago and I’m slowly trying them out. The set is a good deal and I always like getting a feel for a line. So far I haven’t fallen for anything but Garden of India (a BWF) is very nice.

    Tea is MF Bouddha Bleu.

Hardly even qualifies as a trip, came down to beach last night to see my mom, will be here less than 24 hours. But have not seen her since February so glad we could do this, hopefully safely.

Unfortunately it is windy, cold and raining, so will not get any actual beach time at all.

Have you tried the Guimauve de Noël yet? Orris Tattoo?

The Guimauve is really nice. A marshmallowy orange blossom without being candy sweet. I preferred it to By Kilian’s Love Don’t Be Shy and would buy it if I had lots of money for perfume. As it is, I’ve just finished my sample.

I have tried Orris Tattoo, but the first try wasn’t great. The opening is a bit sharp.
I have yet to try Guimauve de Noël.
The surprising winner so far is Whiter than white (or words to that effect), it has a lovely lilac note.

I got the sample set from Luckyscent and haven’t been that impressed…not sure why…some of them seem uneven somehow to me. I did like Guimauve but I am a vanilla sucker. I didn’t care for Flavia Vanilla though. Gardens of India didn’t come in my set but that one does look interesting.

So far they have not been a great hit with me either, but when I look at Almairac’s work for other houses there are not that many that I am really smitten by.
But it is nice to explore the whole set, nevertheless. You sort of get a feel for someone’s style this way.

Continuing with my personal theme, today I am imagining that I get to shop in a “fancy” grocery store in a nice part of town. Someone has gifted me a gift card and I have $50 to spend on artisanal cheeses and aged balsamic vinegar.

Pear and Olive would be a good fit, but it is supposed to get hot today, and I think the oiliness would suffocate me. And, unfortunately, I couldn’t find my little decant of Ananaz Fizz. So, wearing Ninfeo Mio to aide in my fantasy of perfect fruit, carefully and artfully arranged in the produce aisle!

I would love to know if anyone has found some. Just got through telling my boyfriend that I am so tired of fragrances getting discontinued only to find it on Ebay for hundreds and even thousands of dollars! Ugh! Sorry for my rant. I’m so sorry! I know what you mean–I’m drawn to weird, apparently not commercially viable scents all the time, and then they disappear only to become cult classics 5 years later! My bottle of P&O was gifted to me by a friendly, local perfumista. If she hadn’t decided it wasn’t for her, I’d have missed my chance, too.

The fresh basil is the real draw for me with Caprese. Possibly I haven’t had proper, fresh mozzarella which I find fine, but not a WOW, but I could eat local tomatoes and fresh basil for days without tiring of them!

I have traveled to Spain in Seville a l’Aube, orange blossoms and woody underpinnings, reminds me of the hills around Jerez de la Frontera, where I lived while working on the air force base at Rota in the 70’s. Oh my so long ago.
I have several OB samples coming in a set from Indigo (no affiliation!) I impulse added to the purchase of Vivacious samples…. The OB samples include California Reverie which I have been wanting to smell, and a sample of Dilettante, which may be depressing if I love it after it has been so recently discontinued….

I think you can still get Dilettante by ordering directly from Hiram Green. I have ordered from them, and the package got here so fast it was amazing.

Also, when I was in Seville in September, I discovered an amazing line of body products made from local oranges and orange blossoms called Bendita Luz. The smell of the orange blossom soap is to die for. http://www.benditaluz.es/index-eng.html

I am on furlough this week as I mentioned in a previous post – so I am commando for a bit, then going out to kayak later this morning. I also have projects when I get home so maybe Chanel No. 19 (thanks to the recent swap meet).

And then…I have an appointment for a crown at the dentist. I’ve already rescheduled twice – am nervous about going to a dentist right now, but the tooth has a crack and I’m nervous about that, too. Wish me luck.

A friend of mine went for a cleaning a few weeks ago, and she said it was weirdly reassuring to have someone in close proximity, taking care of her in that way. These times can be so isolating, it felt good to her to have that connection. . . .And she posted a picture of the plastic sheeting that wrapped half of the room to contain any expectoration.

Not sure going to get a crown would feel as “self-carey,” but hoping it feels good to get it done and off the list!

Springpansy, my daughter is a dentist, and she has spent a lot of time and money refitting her office & operatories with ADA and CDC approved extra HEPA filtration on all air-handling systems, new systems for catching aerosolized material on all hand-pieces & drills, extra PPE, cleaning between patients, new sterilization systems, and staff training. Everyone is in full PPE – suits, N95s, surgical masks and full-face visors. They will take good care of you. Plus a cracked tooth could easily become an implant, so deal with it now. Less time in the chair, less $$$, less risk. P.S.: I hate going to the dentist. Sometimes I think that’s why she chose the field. 😉

I put on the same t shirt I wore yesterday. And am swooning in the remnants of Pharoahs Passion. It is heady stuff. I wrote a note to Diane St. Clair to thank her for reawakening my love of fragrance in the time of Covid. She wrote back and and said she might do full bottle size.
I wish I was walking and talking with my sister here at home actually in California. I wish she could visit and we could just drive up the coast.

Was offline yesterday, but wore California Rêverie, which always makes me happy.

Today was less about fantasy vacation in Fiori di Capri, although I would love to go there. It was about innocuous scent for my dental cleaning. I dislike cleanings, but I was happy to go…it felt like normal life. And…the mile walk over at 8:30 this gorgeous morning and then back was a wonderful way to start the day. What’s interesting is most of the city activity is construction workers, they are back out in full force. Nice to see.

Springpansy…I will say my hygienist had on two masks. I think she had on an N95 under a surgical. I felt entirely comfortable. But…every patient and staff person had on a mask, so that helps.

Love the painting Robin chose for today!

Craving Chanel Boy, which arrived in my mailbox yesterday. Last night I was enveloped in its elegant lavender goodness, decanting for a split. I’ve got a mammogram later this morning (yuck!) and so am restraining myself from wearing perfume until that visit is done.

While decanting, I watched perfume reviews of Boy on Youtube, something I do not usually do–I prefer reading to listening. I enjoyed the background chat about the very perfume I was working with. It felt akin to watching a Julia Child cooking show and then getting to eat the finished dish!

So lets file Byredo Bibliotheque under perfumes that make me giggle. Not a bad thing. I just sprayed the entire sample on myself after mixing some with unscented body lotion for the layering effect. The most glorious stone fruit opening and now powdery sweetness. I got no leather and no patchouli about 2 hours in. I did not travel to a library but maybe an orchard or into the painting pictured above, without the dusty smell of feathers, of course. THUNK.

You’re so right……no commute is a huge plus about working from home……but missing the overall interaction with humans at work. Well, I’m in education, so it will be interesting to see how things play out in the next month or so.
If I never participate in another Zoom meeting, it will be too soon! Ugh! Lol!

Well i fear these regulations will last at least til end of this year.

        Its perfectly understandable…
We do not want to crowd the public transport right now, our offices are not corona-proof…and to be honest, my work is very do-able from home
(its IT related, only digital products, so no need to be in a store, office or a restaurant).

….and as a public servant, we have to set an example and act/think even more prudent ?

It puts a strange strain on you, I suppose. There was an article in the NRC this week explaining why these online meetings are so exhausting. If you google NRC Gianpiero Petriglieri, you ought to be able to find it easily.

SOTD = Herve Gambs Hotel Particulier

I’m back in Lisbon, Portugal, where I bought this vacation perfume with all its vanilla, incense, sandalwood, woody patch goodness. I have been twice and wouldn’t mind going again.

In other news, for the first time ever, my company is allowing employees to take a paid afternoon off on Juneteenth. I applaud this but, at the same time, worry about other dates that matter that won’t get the same treatment.

Oh, and I just got a text that DHL will be delivering Vivacious today. I hope the driver does not get discouraged when he sees that he can’t drive his truck in because the parking lot is being paved and today is the hot tar coating day. My section of the lot is not being paved so I left my car parked here bit won’t be able to drive out until Friday.

Overcast and dreary day here. The good news is it’s not terribly hot.

One of my lost packages showed up yesterday. Alas, it was not my perfume package.

I’m waffling back and forth about visiting the Folk Art Center right up the Parkway. I’d love to go, they have such cool stuff from local artisans, but I’d probably end up spending money and it certainly isn’t “essential.”

North Carolina Covid cases have double every day for the past several days. Not a great time to be encountering people in a closed environment. I’m still staying home except for the grocery store and gas. When I am out, I hardly see anyone wearing a mask. I guess that would account for the increasing cases here…?

I understand being torn about enclosed spaces! Bath and Body has opened back up but here in Virginia, masks and social distancing are the law. I see about 95 percent compliance. But going to store where one must sniff. That is the point. I would try to bend and sniff as much as possible, but one could see where it turns into a nightmare of lots of people, with maybe clean hands, touching every thing! Including me! How do they clean everything when they close? I could just order on line but I refuse to buy without sniffing first. And people are just oblivious. Out an outdoor farm stand this morning, I get in the small line, people are wearing their masks and distancing until that one unmasked person. I was in the tent selecting and paying, glorious basil, beautiful flower bouquet. This woman literally buzzed the stand, with no mask, she could see there was a line but she actually took some herbs right out of my hand and yelled in my face, with no mask! Horrific! I am a tall, imposing woman too! Be careful. I think it is wise to have a plan on how to handle this before you are stymied by shock, as I was.

yes, exactly, shop your own stash.

I’m having a hard time imagining a trip to a perfume counter, I don’t think I would want to pick up tester bottles and sniff them like I used to do.

my local BBW has a sink in the middle of the store for people to try out soaps, I hope it gets more use these days!

very sorry about the close encounter, people are not always kind, and I would be stymied in that moment too.

I am wearing Melograno today, which I find very uplifting. I can imagine I bought it in Italy and the SMN mothership. However, I bought it over the phone just recently from one of my two favorite independent perfume shops in San Francisco, had a nice conversation with the owner when I ordered, and am supporting a local non-chain shop.

There is a SMN store in Chevy Chase, a day trip for me. It is on my bucket list. I have convinced myself the mother of all patchouli perfumes lives there. I could get a sample but what fun is that? I suspect it will not be until next year, if that little store survives.

I have a friend whose HG fragrance is the SMF Patchouli so I hear it’s all that. I think some perfume stores will reopen–the one in SF I bought from will be doing that soon–but things will be different inside them. Not sure how sniffing will be done….

The SMN mothership is DIVINE. I went on a day trip with friends to do wine tasting in Tuscany when we had a week working in Bologna, and we came back very pleasantly fuzzy and sampled every scent at the perfume bar in SMN after just walking around agape at the space. I can’t wait to go again… Someday!

There were a few perfume outings for me on our honeymoon in Italy a few years ago, including a delightful sales experience at SMN! Our SA seemed so happy to discuss fragrance in a more meaningful way than “what is the most popular scent?”

As a bonus, our hotel room looked out in that direction and there are thousands, THOUSANDS of starlings swarming the old church. Noisy and kinda wonderful.

LOL. There’s a list of 13 FAQs about this with different variations of “Will I get paid”. The group that doesn’t normally work on Friday afternoon gets nothing (I would be up in arms) whereas the people who are scheduled to work will get the time off paid as will the ones who had already put in for a vacation day. Anyway, I am not the decision-maker so I would assume this was thought through. I may be missing the nuances of labor laws when it comes to something like this.

Sotd = Le Jardin de Monsieur Li

wanted to wear this one last week but ran out of garden days. I really would love to visit a place with a garden that smells like this perfume.

perfume is self-care and self-defense, so I will go to Trader Joe’s later today with Monsieur Li in my pocket, spray with abandon, then hope my sillage warns off idle and clueless shoppers.

ADORE the art up top today, brown is an unsung hero of art, imho, and it is used wonderfully in that painting.

yesterday was a low energy day, though I did a big tidy up of my back garden, and that felt good. Feels even better to look out my kitchen window this morning and imagine the garden gnomes were busy overnight. 😉

When I told one lady we we’re closed, she didn’t believe me, and to prove I’m a liar says “if your closed, why are there cars in the parking lot!?” Sigh…
I went with Carnal Flower today. Lot’s of sprays so I could smell it through my mask. My one male fragrant coworker was wearing Mont Blanc Legend, and even though he smelled good, he overpowered CF, so I reaplied at lunch!

Deva, I started typing a whole big reply but I could type pages on this topic. I will just agree with your statement wholeheartedly!

People are starting to get a little careless here. I noticed less social distancing at the grocery store today than there had been in the recent past.

People are nuts, sorry you had to deal with that! Glad you have a fragrance-friend at work.

Oh gosh, my most positive thoughts heading your way. That is so frustrating! I agree with Deva. You did smell amazing though.

Robin, I hope that your quick family visit was a pleasant one.

Lovely temperatures again for me, but clouds have rolled in. So I think that the stretch of perfect weather is probably done for. Ah well… I enjoyed it immensely while it lasted.

SOTD = playing in my sample stash today with Rock Crystal EdP by Olivier Durbano. I’ve missed wearing incense perfumes! It felt good to sniff this one.

It’s been great weather here too. I don’t really mind it raining, as long as it doesn’t storm. It looks like it might this weekend though. Hope it doesn’t head your way.

Ugh, it looks that there will be a chance of thunderstorms every day for the next 6 days here.

I did not notice any humidity when I did my errands earlier this afternoon. I will admit that I was more focused on “Get in and get done” though.

I have been virtual conferencing today and will be doing so for the next three days as well. It’s been surprisingly fun and engaging! I feel more stimulated than I have for three months. One guy had to take a quick break from his talk because his dog, a Great Dane, has been having bowel problems and he had to go let her out in the yard. We’re discussing what to plan for next year’s conference, and how, if, and when. It was scheduled for Valencia in June, but we may delay until October of 2021. Who knows? Gosh, I would so love to go! I’m also learning new technologies as we go along. Several of my cats attended with me today and drew comments. I’m back in St Clair Eve but dreaming of oranges in Valencia….

This evening: trying a bit from a sample of St. Clair Gardener’s Glove. I find it very nice. 🙂

Not a productive day, but Mom and I went to a local park to get some fresh air this afternoon, and then got takeout at Wendy’s. I haven’t accomplished as much as I’d like to these past few days, but I’ve read a few books. I should have gotten in more time working in the yard while the weather was decent.

Day 2 of back in the office. I was utterly exhausted last night and as a result was falling asleep by 6:00. I’m back wfh next week so it will be a bit of re-adjusting again. I like having my duo screens but don’t like not having my buddies back yet.

Tonight I sprayed on the last bit of L’Attesa from a decant.

One of the parts of telecommuting I struggle with is the lack of dual monitors. It makes things so much easier than it is on a little laptop screen. If I were to work from home regularly I’d have to get a couple to be as efficient as I am at the office.

Wearing Bill Blass Nude today. I miss when fragrances could have a ton of oakmoss in them!
