Wednesday scent of the day 5/6

Posted by Robin on 6 May 2020 314 Comments

It's Hump Day! Birthdays today: Sigmund Freud, Willie Mays, George Clooney. Two quick PSAs: the Haiku challenge is coming up on Saturday, and we'll try a Swapmeet the following week (May 16). What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Thierry Mugler Oriental Express, which I included in 5 perfumes: iris fragrances for fall.

Reminder: 5/8 is Iris Day, so we'll repeat our project from 2016... wear an iris fragrance, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Yikes! Robin, thanks for reminding me about the Haiku challenge. I need to start working on it. And I love the name of your perfume.

I am wearing Heeley Iris de Nuit. While I do not care for its carroty opening, on me, fortunately, the carrot note disappears in a few minutes. After that, Iris de Nuit smells lovely: a green musky iris/violet combo. Fresh and refined.

So is this week’s haiku challenge covid-themed? Or are we going to do a sepearate haiku challenge for covid-19?

This was the first Iris I ever tried and I did not care for it at all. Now that I’m an unabashed iris head, I should seek it out again.

Oriental Express is a wonderful perfume! I never thought of it as iris, so I may need to test that out for myself today.

Speaking of Mugler, I’m not sure how this crazy collector bottle works, but I have to have one:

I tried Vanille Charnelle, 1001 Ouds and Étoile d’Une Nuit. Meh about Vanille Charnell, disliked 1001 Ouds, but like Étoile d’Une Nuit. I wore the latter yesterday. I only wish it were stronger and lasted longer.

Everything is wrong this year! No spring temps at all and summer is just around the corner. I hope we do not jump from the 40’s/50’s right into the 90’s. Not that I would complain if that happens, but still some transition weather would be very welcome!

Glossier You, which has grown on me the last couple of times I’ve worn it. I don’t need a bottle but I’ll finish my decant.
The sun is out!?The starbucks nearest me has reopened their drivethru!? I will be drinking a proper chai tea latte very shortly. My husband has suggested (more than once?) that I get a frother and try to make my own, but….that would defeat the whole point. It always tastes better when someone else makes it.

p.s. would anyone be interested in a 10 Corso Como split? Really looking for an excuse to buy a bottle, lol.

Argh i keep forgetting about the cp.
I love iris and i have plenty of it to participate.
But wanted to try something new today.

Noir Patchouli by Histoires de Parfums

With that name I was expecting an earthy dark patchouli, but its all ‘ladies boudoir’ to me….. soap, powder, hairspray. ? A hint of leather after a few hours.
Its nice but not a big like or love.

Well, it is not one of those harsh and sharp smelling hairsprays. But one they made pretty.
It also reminds me of other hair products (shampoo), but cannot pinpoint what note(s) trigger this association.

I wonder why they called this Noir Patchouli….

Patchouli! Yesterday I made my first FB blind purchase in years–Montale’s Patchouli Leaves. I was really craving an earthy patch. Nobody tell me I made a mistake—its done.

Yup with that name I expected an earthy and damp gothic patchouli haha. So it turned out to be more ‘Fluffy patchouli’, not bad, but I did not even get a lot of patchouli actually ?

Maybe i need to spray more next time? (I applied two sprays in my neck and one on the wrist)

I read some comments on Patchouli Leaves on fragrantica and it sounds pretty good!

Masks are your friend, lillyjo. The NYT has more than one article about how to make them:

          https://www.nytimes.com/article/how-to-make-face-mask-coronavirus.html

You could also wrap your scarf over it, if that would be more stylish.

In the other day when I took the kids for a walk in one of the parks a park employee had a basket and handed out a packet of cotton masks that are washable. He let me take some to my neighbor (she is retired and not sure what her masks stash looks like so I left a packet outside her door)

For someone who wore a mask, shoe coverings, and a hair bonnet for 14 years before my promotion to SAHM, I can say that the best mask is one that ties around your head, and not the loops around the ears. So if you have a hanky/cotton that you can tie around your head you maybe more comfortable in that for your work day than a loopy ear one, IMHO.

I couldn’t stand it anymore, so I went at the rat’s nest on top of my head with some scissors. Not too bad. Not the greatest cut of all time, but neither is it disastrous. It has, at the least, gotten rid of the extra-dry and crackly ends that were bothering me.

I do not have a lot of iris perfume options, but I seem to recall a little travel roll-on of Iris Nobile Sublime somewhere in the perfume cabinet. I might save that for Friday.

    Happy hump day, all!

Bah! Unfortunately, right now I can only think of ones from when my youngest was very sick. His name for his nightly injection was “shocker”; his little tub for when he was going to be sick was an “uh oh”. Oh ya– okay, a 5 o’clock shadow at 7 am that needs to be shaved is a “Shaggy”, a temper tantrum is a “Vivian Leigh”, a messy room is a “dust up”, and for reasons that have been lost through the mists of time, a table napkin is a “napikon”– there are others, of course, but those are the ones that come to mind.

My beloved Iris Poudre today. Though not as “irisy” as some, this one always feels special.

I had to go into school to clean up my classroom today, and because there is construction in the building, it was fully outfitted with posted rules and temperature checks. It was both comforting and disquieting. Glad I had my iris poudre cloud!

I’ve been binging on horse shoeing videos. Such an amazing profession and I feel for these men and women whose back must be killing them most of the time. I’m especially taken with this channel:

    https://youtu.be/owoNKdZZrh4

This is a young farrier who is also in vet school. He really explains what he’s doing and why. Some of these hoof issues look horrible, but proper vet and farrier care really gets these horses back in fine form again. The comments are so funny! Ex: “Why are you breathing so hard?” ? I think it’s called “hard work!” I’m sad that I didn’t consider farrier school when I was younger. I’d much rather smell horse doodie than people poo. Not to mention, these horses are better behaved than 75% of my patients. ?

On the perfume front I’m in ELDO Fils de Dieu for a comforting hug.

We live very proximal to the vet school at the university here. We ride our bikes past the horses on our way to the lake. On a “good” day, meaning the wind is just right, we can definitely smell the horse doodie.

I can understand that- they are large powerful animals that can potentially kill you. I once had a friend who felt the same as you, and knew of my deep and sincere love for them. Whenever we happened to see one, she’d quip “Where’s my fork?” She also didn’t like cats, because she said they reminded her of crying babies in Vietnam when they yowled. (She was born and raised there until the fall of Saigon at age 7.) So, I’m sure she had good reasons for her odd (in my mind) dislikes.

Hi Deva, I love horses and used to go horse riding as a girl. I wouldn’t want to be on a horse again anytime soon, too scared off falling off them.

I just found another clip from a very famous horse getting his feet done. One of the most expensive stallions ever bred in my country. He is very well behaved although he does take a little nibble near the end.

Yeah, the last time I was on a horse was 20 years and 50 pounds ago.

That is such a stunning horse. Really, just poetry in motion. I used to ride a lot when I was younger and remember when in class the few times I would be jumping and in total sync with the horse. Such an amazing feeling on “oneness.” I follow this channel: https://youtu.be/dvOycCdGaxE

mostly because she doesn’t yap throughout the videos but focuses on the Friesians. I believe she’s in the Netherlands. I love the young ones! She often a has videos of her practicing dressage.

the lady (and her horses) are in The Netherlands. They are in Friesland (one of our northern provinces) and the place where these horses were first bred. The language you hear her speak is not Dutch but Friesian.

Got a case of dragging butt today for some reason. Probably because I work five hours five days straight instead of 3 8 hour days. Being on my feet the whole time and walking on concrete doesn’t help either. Wearing no 22 edt today. I found out that my grocery package that was supposed to arrive today is delayed until tomorrow and no reason on why it’s delayed. Good news is that my Harry and David order came yesterday. I am addicted to the chocolate covered Bing cherries and got 5 packs of them.

Sample roulette produced Mandarina Corsica by L’AP. It’s a nice citrus gourmand, like a slice of warm orange caramel cake. It’s a quiet silage and retains its orange sparkle after the dry down. Pretty nice for a chilly drippy Spring day. Not sure if it’s fb worthy, but a lucky find for the day ?

    SotD = L’eau d’Hiver

from a sample which was sitting on my at-home desk. This morning L’eau d’Hiver started off like J&J baby shampoo, a nice smell. It reminds me of honey. Then soft flowers, that’s the iris and heliotrope I guess. I like this one and Carnal Flower best of the few I’ve tried from this line. Probably because I adore transparency and BWFs.

My local school board declared today Day of the Employee. I am underwhelmed. But it is a nice gesture.

To everyone who is doing more, less, different, the same, better, worse, or nothing at all work-wise, I say “Good for you!” And if you’re helping yourself or others get through the day in one piece, then thank you very much for doing what you do.

It’s been a little bit of a downer day around my house, nothing is wrong, just sometimes that’s the way it goes. Positivity is an easy way to boost my own mood, and it makes me happy that it might bring a little boost to NST friends too.

In Promenade des Anglais this AM. It is from one of those bee bottles. Usually I use a pipette to apply it, but this morning I thought I’d use the dang bulb sprayer that came with it. Oish! Such a dumb little pretension. And it make a high pitched flatulent sound on top of everything when you squeeze it. Just ridiculous. Nothing like applying a gorgeous Guerlain to the tune of “Ppptzzzsqueak, Ppptzzzsqueak, Ppptzzzsqueak!”

I hate that sprayer, too! I complained last year while at a Guerlain counter and they gave me another one – same issue. As a result, I don’t really use the perfume (Liu) very much at all.

I know, right. It completely defeats the goal of adding elegance. It doesn’t spray well, it allows for evaporation of the perfume, and it makes a funny sound!

This perfume is so light that I can apply it almost like a cologne–I am going through it quickly, so not worth decanting. Also, I really like the bee bottle, just not the stooopid bulb sprayer!

Xerjoff Irisss from a small decant that I bought probably 10 years ago. I think, nobody can argue that this is a great showcase for using iris in perfumery. I like it, but for me it’s not worth $6.50-$9.00 per ml (dependent on a bottle size). I could see myself paying for it at the Iris Silver Mist or L’Atessa’s rate, but not more.

One of the additional downsides of working from home is getting more telemarketing calls. My phone is on the Do Not Call list, but it doesn’t help completely. And if before, when economy was strong, I got seriously annoyed by those calls and even from time to time allowed myself to be less than courteous, now, knowing how many people were left without an income, I understand that for some this work is the only one they can get – so I try to be polite and not to snap. But it is quite annoying.

I’ve gotten more robocalls to my landline…with a marked decrease to my cell. That said, I used to pick up some of the calls and just stayed silent.

As to Irissss, I could still kick myself for not buying an on sale bottle plus an extra 30% off when I had the opportunity. This was going back a good 5-6 years ago when I have not yet honed my perfume pouncing skillz ?

It’s a cool, damp day and I remembered that one of my many iris perfumes is AG Mon Parfum Cheri par Camille in the original stunning dark red bottle with black bow.

To me, this perfume was always the edgy Goth sister of Jacques Fath Iris Gris — iris and peach plus patchouli. I assumed it was a fall perfume but it’s working very well on a chilly spring day.

    Discontinued but still haunting ebay.

In Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile Sublime. The difference in this flanker is the absence of star anis and the addition of birch tar and black locust, it is more powdery than the orginal, a lit of orange blossom and neroli and a suede effect.

I visited Versailles only last year. I once went to the Chapelle Royale ages ago. The thing with Versailles is that it is so busy and crowded that it’s quite hard to get a feel for the place, or any idea of its lay out.
I did love the garden though. When I was there, there were families on the Grand Canal in rowing boats and I loved watching people just messing about on the water.
I also love the Grand and the Petit Trianon, there were not as many people there as there were in the main palace.

Still, I do still prefer Vaux, that truly feels like the Belle au bois dormant might just wake up at any moment and make her way into the gardens.

I saw the interior of Versailles ages ago, when I was little. Probably at the end of the 80s.

I visited it again as a student, with a friend. We only stayed in the gardens because we were poor haha.
And yes, the building itself is just too big.
Working there (then and now) will get you record breaking pedometer scores ?

I still want to visit Vaux. Thats the chateau famous for being in quite some movies and series right?

Yep, I think it was used for Marie Antoinette (the Coppola film) and it was the inspiration for Versailles. It was created by Le Vaux, Le Nôtre and Le Brun on Louis Fouquet’s orders. Louis XIV got so angry and jealous when he was first invited there that he jailed Fouquet!
I find it far more harmonious and easier to grasp than Versailles.

Oriental Express has been discontinued as far as I know, you might want to pursue it sooner rather than later.

Thank you for letting me know. I doubt I will get it. I like it a lot, but that particular niche is kind of well filled in my collection. It is very good though.

Hello NST! Today is my 25th wedding anniversary. I’m still kind of wondering where all the time went. It doesn’t *feel* like 25 years have passed… ?

SOTD = Mon Guerlain EdP, from the sample stash. This has more vanilla and less lavender than the EdT. I’m getting a vanilla-lavender-honey ice cream vibe with the EdP. ?

      Congratulations!

I’ve never tried the EDT, it seems like I have to. One can never have too much lavender, and I do adore the edp.

Thank you austenfan! I’d say that the EdT is closer to unisex than the EdP is, at least on my skin.

Congrats on your silver wedding anniversary! My parents decided to invite all their original wedding guests to their 25th. I’m considering it for my 25th, which is a few years away.

Thank you Elisa P! We have a special bottle of Grand Marnier that we only touch on our anniversary. I had a wee dram of that, which I consider appropriately celebratory. We might do something else later on this year if circumstances permit.

Late check in but recovering from professional whiplash. Was just settling in to patient care role and learning a whole new system when we got a late email yesterday telling us we were no longer needed in patient care and to show up in the morning to our Bronx office to now fill another new role- or more so an add on to our old role. So back to the 2 hour early morning subway commute ? Plus there was loads of drama with some of our office staff who work up there. They resent us being there and having to review our stuff that we’re learning from scratch. Some of them really need to retire already…
I wore Paris-Riviera which I couldn’t smell except for the few minutes between spraying and going outside this morning, but it was a great few minutes!

It was pretty cray. It was like a bad office-based reality show. Thank goodness my direct coworkers all get along oretty well, so we did a good job of asserting ourselves and supporting each other.

Sneaking in late to post day 3’s Iris: Apres L’Ondee. I have some early 90’s EdT in the old lute bottle and it is just perfect for a melancholy day.

Today I wore a smidge of Joy parfum, and I didn’t hate it this time. It’s quite nice, but I don’t need it.
I keep intending to participate in Iris “week”, but then I don’t. Let’s see, I’ve used up my Bellogia and Diorling vintage samples, but both became undetectable surprisingly quickly so that was quite disappointing and sad. I followed those up with Chamade. Well at least I don’t need to chase those down. Farnesiana, on the other hand, that’s a different story. Fleur de Cassie, eat your heart out. Why do I even get vintage samples anyway?
Iris is so often paired with violet, and my skin and violet are not friends. I also noticed I am desperately on low samples of iris soliflores; a couple years back I went through a bunch to see what I liked with the intention of purchasing one, but then I didn’t. Feu Secret, New Sibet, Iris Silver Mist, and surprisingly Iris Fauve from Atelier d’Or were favorites.
Maybe I’ll wear Dzongkha or Silences tomorrow, or Friday, but I won’t make any promises.
