Tuesday scent of the day 5/5

Posted by Robin on 5 May 2020 210 Comments

Happy Cinco de Mayo! What fragrance are you wearing?

Points for me today — I'm in Honoré des Prés I Love Les Carottes, which I included in 5 perfumes: iris fragrances for spring. Tea at the moment is an organic Ceylon from Indulgashinna Estate, via Upton, with a bit of shaved nutmeg.

Reminder: 5/8 is Iris Day, so we'll repeat our project from 2016... wear an iris fragrance, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: you can find the Royal Copenhagen Blomst collection ("Peonies, lilacs, dahlias and more bloom across Royal Copenhagen's porcelain collection of understated, modern dinnerware") at Bloomingdales, where the Iris Dinner plate is $145, the Lilac Cup & Saucer Set is $115, and the Tree Peony Teapot is $250.

It’s delicious! I’m a kid that grew up on PB sandwiches.

My dad loved PB so much he was known as the Peanut Butter Prince. He would do PB, Jelly, and potato chips, fried PB & Jelly (it’s delicious), and PB & Cheerios.

I’m wearing Dior Homme today. I don’t wear it often, but it is good and very comforting.

The iris plate is really gorgeous, you can’t make it out so well in that picture, and there are other pretty mugs and tea cups. But all too spendy for me :-)

By the way, the last time I visited Brussels, somewhere in February I think, I saw the lovely Gien tea set that you posted here a while ago. I didn’t buy it, but was sorely tempted.

Royal Copenhagen has some beautiful stuff as well. My mother used to collect china, and I remember her mentioning this brand. She has some beautiful Rörstrand Garden of Eden.

I think the only fragrance I have that has a prominent iris note is Dior Homme. So I grow iris, I know that orris butter comes from the iris tubers but iris flowers actually have a lovely fragrance. Some of our little native iris are quite fragrant, like iris cristata. There are some very tall, white Japanese iris blooming at the Norfolk Botanical Garden and they smell really good. I have purple bearded iris blooming in my yard currently, they smell like candy.

I love Siberian iris too! Tough and beautiful. I like their foliage when they are not in bloom too. Grass like and very green.

    Liberation Day!

75 years ago we were liberated from German occupation.
The southern part of our country was already liberated in 1944. But the northern provinces followed in may 1945.
This day is here to remind us to never take freedom and peace for granted!

SotD is Des Lys by Goutal. Spring in a bottle (decant…from a lovely NSTer). Very cheerful and uplifting.

Yesterday I made a cajun jambalaya, or variant on it…because i did not have andouille sausages. I already had a spicy Hungarian sausage so I used that and it turned out pretty tasty.

Half way through the book A Curious History of Sex by Kate Lister.
Its funny (she uses lots of puns…dont read it if you dont like puns),
Interesting (so…..corn flakes were invented to prevent masturbation and excessive sexual behaviour hahaha)
And also cringe worthy (transplantation of monkey glands to humans..say what???…..female genital mutilation…iiiieeeewwww horrible)

I wish my long weekend lasted longer…but tomorrow i need to go back to work and video meetings…urgh.

Even though I cannot travel anywhere?, I think Ill need to take a whole week off soon.

Spending the days sleeping in, reading books, trying out new recipes and only going out for ice cream or a walk in the sun, is pretty soothing actually. ?

          Thank you!

The drawing was inspired by my morning runs. I always spot lots of rabbits, so funny to see how they thrive in an urban environment.

They are located in an area with grass and shrubbery, but there is literally a highway on the other side of their ‘home’ and another 500 meter further there is a huge suburb.

Loved the drawing. The bunnies seem to be really concerned with the human lying down.

Have you seen the series in the Volkskrant “achter de maskers”? It’s great. All these exhausted ICU nurses after their shifts with the marks of their masks still on them.

        Yup
Our local ice cream shop is located right next to the supermarket I go to for groceries…i do not even need to make a detour.

The shop was closed during first 5 weeks of the lockdown but they re-opened approximately three weeks ago (for take away).

Hmmm this means we are in the 8th week of our ‘lockdown’ already (though sometimes it seems like ages).

Its not a very stringent lockdown i guess. We are allowed to go outside for a walk or a run and for grocery shopping of course. And we do not need to wear masks (yet).
But we have to work from home, meetings/crowds forbidden, and of course: everybody needs to practice social distancing!

I promise that I am not scent-stalking you, but I am also wearing Iris Poudré today — scent twins two days running. It is beautiful, but it is just not me. Too refined? Fortunately, I bought the travel spray and so even though I’ve no desire to repurchase, I do not regret the expenditure.

About to change into grown-up clothes for an end-of-year virtual gathering. My department is congratulating our graduating seniors and bidding farewell to two wonderful colleagues who are here for just this year. We will make the best of this less-than-ideal sendoff.

Doing my day a bit different today having just enjoyed pancakes and maple syrup (typically reserved for weekends). Delicious and I think I might do this more often the days having lost much of their meaning anyway.

Started off in Fragrance du Bois Oud Bleu Intense from a Luckyscent Bar sample – it’s a lovely, fresh orange-cardamom-aquatic woody scent – but instead of creating mental summer, it made the grumpy weather feel even more oppressive. Oops!

Switched to Jorum Studio Nectary for a richer rose-peach-ambergris oud. Love.

You know usually I am not at ALL an aquatic perfume person, this one really pleasantly surprised me, it’s not overbearing like too many of that genre are. May be worth a sniff for you!

        The day did improve, yes!

Did an Asian supermarket stop (only the second one of COVID, my husband”s family background is Japanese so we’ve been good about rationing these visits out and making do with what’s available at the regular grocery store 80% of the time), and came home to find my mangoes had finally ripened, so deep dish mango pie is ready for tonight’s dessert!

2 pre-made pie shells, 4-6 mangoes depending on the size, peeled and medium sliced, mixed with the juice from about ½ a lemon, ¼tsp nutmeg, 1tsp cornstarch, and sugar to taste to make a thin sauce.

Pour into one pie shell and wet the edges, vent the second shell and pop it on top and crimp the edges together with a fork.

Bake at 375°F 50-75 minutes until top is golden brown! (Time sometimes depends how much you’ve overstuffed with mangoes so just go by color on top!)

Off to my Tuesday sandwich-making gig. Crisp and sunny out there, so should be a pleasant walk up. May stop at Home Depot to find clear recycling bags. And the health food store to look for a supplement that interests me…

Wearing AA Mandarine Basilic. Maybe I’ll just stay with the orangey things this week….

Well, maybe partial points for me – I wore PG Cuir d’Iris to bed last night, and today am in Papillon Dryad which has orris root in its middle notes. Still loving Dryad – it’s totally FB-worthy – just having trouble convincing myself to spring for one in this era’s financial climate. Otoh, the $$ spent on it will definitely make me happier, so … therapy? Maybe I could use HSA money for it? Kidding, Mr. IRS Man, really just kidding. Happy Schmooosday, everybody. :)

2 good things: I’m off today and it’s gorgeous out. Nothing major planned except a walk to feed the colony kitties and a few quick errands. Some zoom activities later. And the dreaded cleaning that needs to be done, blech.
I’ve been having a Kelly Caleche edp craving lately and wore it after a shower last night, so topped it up this morning. I do get the lipstick-y rose-violet-iris trifecta from this, especially in the early phases.

I’m in VCA Bois d’Iris, my favorite iris of the ones I’ve tried. 28 La Pausa is still on my list to try.
My parents are on their way home from Florida, started their trip yesterday and will make it through my city tonight. I think they might actually stay overnight here but I don’t think I will see them. My mom asked if they should stop and as much as I would like to see them, I had to say no.☹️If I had been able to truly isolate I might feel differently, but since I work in healthcare, I just don’t want to expose them to anything I might be carrying around on me. I suppose if it warms up this afternoon we could meet somewhere outside and stay 6 feet away. We’ll probably just end up FaceTiming, lol, at least I know that’s safe.

Forcing myself to break for lunch. This WFH stinks.
    Later six more Google meets….ugh.

But I will force myself to walk after. The usual two miles.

I theoretically have many irises to choose from such as Eve, Pandora, Iris Ukiyoe, LAtessa, Iris Ganache, my Orris root essential oil blend…..thanks to pl67 iris has become a favorite note.

But I am wearing Brit Parfum. Haven’t worn it in ages. And discovering that it has a gorgeous almond note. Have I finally found my almond perfume?

And my hands smell of Winter Woods after decanting for a sweet perfumista.

First: Much thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes yesterday! They are greatly appreciated!

Scent: Infusion d’Iris & a dab of Bruno Fazzolari Feu Secret from a sample. I’m really enjoying Feu Secret today.

Tea: White Vanilla Grapefruit from Harney earlier, coffee right now, with a planned detour back to White Vanilla Grapefruit later.

Reading: a novel and some side physics, as I’m digging into lenses. In some cases, I dig until I GET it (or not).

If it seems to get little interest, maybe we’ll just wait and see how things are going in the fall, although of course it may be worse.

Just one opinion and in a few weeks it will likely be different.

Late to the party because I slept in. Formerly (as in previous to entering the Covid 19 Twilight Zone) I would castigate myself for sleeping in, calling myself “lazy” and “unproductive.” Now, I just don’t care, and will sleep until my body tells me to get up. Even if it’s 4pm. Working nights messes with your body, and I have shuffled my priorities a bit, sleep being towards the very top. I’m lucky to be able to make those kinds of adjustments. I really don’t know how people with young kids and other commitments get through with so little sleep and/or “down time.” Big hat tip to all those who are juggling kids, work, covid, not to mention those who are not working and under all kinds of financial stress. Just know you’re AMAZING an I greatly admire you.

Hello! No iris fragrance yet today, though I have some of the ones Robin named for each season. :) We’re supposed to get winter-like weather again soon…

Tea this morning was Numi Breakfast Blend.

A fragrant iris is blooming in the raised bed in front of the house. I think it’s ‘Crimson King,’ although it’s more of a reddish purple than crimson. It’s pretty, though.

Very on theme with the Iris CP!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B_0EYDKB5zm/?igshid=1k672g7z3l7i5

#givingtuesdaynow campaign is an extra day of giving. I had already given last month to a COVID-19 campaign and with this new campaign, I decided to give a monthly train ticket’s worth since it is money I would have spent were I to still be commuting to NYC but I have not done so since March 16. I still have sunk costs for parking – not giving that up yet even though I have not used it since March 16 as well. If you have the means to do so, I encourage you to also give at this time. I have to Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen.

What not to do on Zoom or maybe I’ll call these Zoom Woes since Commuting Woes are on hiatus ?:
    1) decide to switch from sitting to standing without changing the height of your device’s camera. A headless torso swaying in NOT a good sight
    2) check your camera angle! Some people look like giants with tiny heads…and watch your arm – you may not mean it but the sight of your forearm covering 3/4 of your camera, well, see #1

More to come as more of our meetings switch to Zoom. It is easier to see people than the tiny boxes from a Cisco Jabber See Me call!

In the not worn often Ma Liberte by Jean Patou, I discovered in 1989. I still have a half 50ml of the bottle I purchased then and a 100ml BUB and it’s a lavender, powdery and spicy oriental, not sweet and very unique that I’ve enjoyed all day. The perfume is the great Jean Kerleo.

Mugler Alien Eau Extraordinnaire – grapey sunshiny jasmine fun. I haven’t won it in over a year, and cleared the sprayer with a few sprays into the bathroom sink. Call it an experiment to see how long it lingers!

I’m wearing Hiris in the blue bottle today. It’s remarkable how much my mood and sleep improve if I go for a walk each day. Before stay at home I’m guessing I ran around enough that I got the same effect.

Happy TueWeBlursday everyone. I had cold cereal for lunch, Kashi dark cocoa karma biscuits. They are about as desserty as Kashi ever gets, and they are yummy.
I had scrambled eggs with leftover corned beef, mozzarella string cheese and harissa powder mixed in for breakfast. Somehow it all worked just fine!
Is anybody else doing daring combinations in the kitchen? I’m like, screw it. Try something, just don’t throw away any food!
Made brownies in an eighth size sheet pan this morning, so I’m wearing Shalimar Route Vanille in chocolate + vanilla solidarity.

Iris will NOT be a problem for me! I’ll wear it the rest of the week.

Yesterday I was missing the ocean camping get away I had this weekend so I wore a couple sprays of OJ Sampaquita and a couple of Wood Sage & Sea Salt. I thought it smelled great. Today I am smelling so good (I can’t stop sniffing myself) in Paris-Deauville.

A drop of vintage Miss Dior for me today, I think it dates from the 1970s. I don’t have much in the way of vintage, just three or four miniatures I’ve found in secondhand shops – and things I bought so long ago that they have grown old with me :)

It’s cooled off in my area, so the A/C has been turned off today. I had turned it on late last week. Spring is being its usual fickle self regarding temperatures. ????????

I saw a few people complaining about finicky cats lately, and I am chiming in to say that, alas, I am part of that club. Spooky kitty in particular. It’s impossible to predict what she will and will not eat on any given day. And, of course, she is on expensive prescription food. ?

SOTD = back in Mon Guerlain EdT. It’s a great background scent.

    Sotd, Nivea lol.

Gorgeous, clear day here. Stunning really. Reminds me of what Nevada skies usta be like, before all of the pollution, geoengineering..etc. No smog at all, just the most beautiful, blue sky. Nevada is so wonderful without all the muck in the skies! And the desert blooms can be very vivid in color:).

I spent most of my day browsing on a clothing site, super productive lol..bought myself a cheap dress..no idea what I would wear it to though.

Also went to Target for a pickup..but they wanted me to come inside…there were simply too many ppl. I asked myself, how important is it that I get those items? So, I left without my order.

Mmm, me thinks it’s time for ice cream:).

Started out in No. 19 Poudre (woo!) and now I’ve layered on some Cuir de Lancome, which I’m really enjoying. Looks like it was only out for a few years before being discontinued.

Now enjoying a beer on the porch.

Tuesday was much better than Monday!

I’m sure no one is reading anymore, but I wore the enjoyable Boucheron Iris de Syracuse. I think its longevity and mostly white musk dry down will hold me back from needing a bottle. But I will definitely finish my sample.

Sounds like the white musk dry down means I don’t need to try it.
