Monday scent of the day 5/4

Posted by Robin on 4 May 2020 434 Comments

May The Fourth Be With You! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Diptyque Eau Capitale. It's all wrong for today (and I'm not sure I love it anyway) so I will change later this morning.

Reminder: 5/8 is Iris Day, so we'll repeat our project from 2016... wear an iris fragrance, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m starting out the week in Saffron & Iris, a 4711 Acqua Colonia.

Well, I’m not sure what saffron smells like, but it goes on with something more than just iris. It certainly isn’t straight up iris. It is a cologne, so I have to apply a lot to last for most of the day. I like it.

    Starting Iris week.
Goutal Etoile d’une Nuit (sample thunk). Soft and smooth makeup iris. Maybe I would like it a bit stronger, but it is still very nice. I will probably get a decant.

Cold and damp here again, wearing Or du Sérail to warm up.

Eau Capitale didn’t work on me either, it was a screechy rose, something too sharp and pointy in there.

We just binge-watched Seasons 1-3 of Ozark. It’s excellent but quite dark and not uplifting. Jason Bateman, is stellar.

So turns out, the suspected issue is much less involved than what I thought. Which means it’s not covered because I have the deductible. This is ok, though because I can get someone else to fix it for less than the deductible and not have to file a claim. Assuming this guys assessment is correct.

Three cheers for make up (if you like that sort of thing–no pressure to anyone who does not). For fun yesterday, I wore a bright neon yellow/blue/pink look with green eyeliner on lower lid. I was channeling 1985 and it was TOTALLY AWESOME!

      Enjoy!

Not sure of Koyel’s answer, but I could imagine watching the sexism, racism and other blatant isms could do that.

I could not tolerate 2nd season of Big Little Lies because I decided I didn’t want to spend a season watching Character A be nasty to Character B.

In our current times I find my tolerance for any sort of… real…drama is very low.

Don’t you love nuclear levels ?? I hope your roof is fixed soon.

Makeup: I have so much of it, but being at home I’ve gotten lazy! I seem to put it on for my weekly outing to the grocery store or drug store (where they have a small grocery area). I watched a few Lisa Eldridge videos on the weekend and maybe am re-inspired to put some on in the morning; it does make you feel better. Maybe I will even try a few more bright colors, not my usual no-makeup look.

TDC Bois d’ Iris. I have my Irises all lined up for the week.
Back to work after a really nice family weekend. Sun makes everything better.? Got out for multiple walks and bike rides, took the inside of my fridge apart and scrubbed every square inch, and finished the PowerPoint presentation for my class. I’m just imagining how much more of a productive person I’d be if I lived somewhere that was sunny 365.

Starting iris week finishing my sample of Imaginary Authors O, Unknown. Soft and sweet rooty iris.

Bright, warm and sunny day today. Back to cold temps tomorrow. No plans to go outside since work will be hectic this week.
Since parks are already open here, I was planning to take a walk with my dog in our nearby park yesterday. No way! It was so crowded, most people were not wearing masks and social distancing was ignored. So stressful! Even though there was police presence around, they didn’t do anything about it. I decided then to take a long walk in the neighborhood instead, which was quieter than usual. I was able to enjoy the weather and Nature in general without much fear of being outside.

    Happy Monday everyone!

I hope your week isn’t too crazy. I’m really glad your neighborhood was peaceful, but I really wish people would remember to social distance. It’s a problem again where I’m living. What was the point of staying at home if we just undo all that good work as soon as the sun comes out?

Agreed. I think in part, with people stressed and distracted, partial openings without clear (and in some cases contradictory) directives have added to the confusion.
From what I’ve observed (informally, mind you) in my area of SF (I live on the beach), many are acting as though it’s a 100% ‘return to normal’.

Hopefully your week is less hectic than you expect! I think we’ll all have to be very careful of our surroundings for awhile. My husband “had” to go to the hardware store on Friday, the first day things started to open up here, and the place was mobbed. He went in anyway. ?

There must be much less risk outdoors in the sunlight, but I agree, why take it when one has already sacrificed so much time in isolation?

I was in a mood for green today
So I am wearing De Bachmakov from a decant.
It is REALLY green, and fresh and a bit foodie, like eating a salad while sitting in a meadow. ???

Yesterday evening my husband asked what fragrance I was wearing….he mostly does that when he loves or hates something haha. It was Bandit. And he loves it. Phew. ??

4th of May is Remembrance of the Dead here in The Netherlands.
And tomorrow 5th of May is Liberation Day.

I am drinking red rice tea we bought in Vietnam last year.
Its a bit sweet, I love it!

        Like genmaicha.

We also brought a green tea with us from Vietnam, its a type called snow tea. Its delicate, bitter and refreshing. I think its great to make ice tea with. No sugar will be added. I love bitter and cold drinks in summer.

It’s Monday and my birthday. I’m celebrating in Chergui this morning. I don’t feel like working – I know my managers will tell me happy birthday but they will add “and can you do all these [annoying] things for me?” I’d like to say “no thanks!” But I won’t. I will, however, be baking my strawberry-rhubarb pie this afternoon. :D

I’ll save my one and only iris for this Friday: VC&A Bois d’Iris.

I used to be like you, sistine. And I still do not like carroty iris and ‘too earthy’ iris. Then I discovered different kinds of iris scents, so now I have a long list of perfumes for at least two iris weeks. My favorites are cosmetic (lipstick, powder) irises: Misia, Lipstick on, Etoile d’une Nuit… Then there is fresh and clean iris in Prada Infusion d’Iris, green and powdery in Heure Exquise, cool lavender/iris in Bvlgari Au The Bleu… This note is a real shape-shifter, so eventually you will probably find an iris fragrance you like.

Also a great gateway iris imho is L’Attesa, its not carroty to my memory, but the iris is creamy/powdery.

I bought Hiris after one spritz in a department store -basically blind because of all the love on the blogs. I don’t know whether it has been reformulated and, honestly, there is nothing that irks me about it. I just don’t wear it. Much later I read Luca Turin’s description of it as “sad iris” and the penny dropped.

Have a great week everyone. I hope you find joy unexpectedly each day.

I woke up in Lyric but now in Kyoto. I am backing off on getting another full bottle of perfume. Forgot that one of my dogs has to go to the vet later in the month or early June. I know the office visit is about $50-$60 but don’t know how much the heartworm test or the rabies shot will run me. My Viktoria Minya travel set hasn’t shipped yet. I hope my Sephora and Luckysent packages ship soon.

Luckyscent seems to be shipping slowly. My last samples order took over a week to be shipped.

I understand that Covid-19 is slowing down shipping but this is starting to get excessive with wait times. Some of what I have ordered are mother’s day gifts and I hope I get them soon. I should not be waiting a month before anything ships. Even some food stuff that I ordered, I am still waiting on.

I can never get away from a vet visit for less than $100. Now I have another cat who’s clearly having dental problems and I may be looking at a $1000 bill. Just went through that about four months ago and then cancer tests for my poor Dusty. I love them but they’re expensive.

Our furry babies are pricey, aren’t they?
Just the RX food alone for SmokeyToes is $60/month. And he turns his nose up at it. Oy.

Sadly, Dusty’s cancer was inoperable and fast-growing. I had the pet hospice come and help him cross over on April 1.

Good morning. I am wearing Caron Parfum Sacre on one arm and Prada Infusion de Rose on the other, trying to decide which one to wear today. I will probably go with Parfum Sacre because in a few weeks it will probably be too hot to wear it? I’ll take advantage of wearing it now.
Not sure about Parfum Sacre in the heat, since I purchased it when the cooler weather was happening.

Oof. I keep thinking in fits of paranoia that I’ve somehow contracted COVID-19 while sitting at home, but I think I am also suffering from allergies. It seems worse this year than usual. (Maybe because I usually spend so much more time in sterile office environments and cleanroom labs?)

It’s a pretty difficult allergy season for many.
Sometimes, clean and sterile isn’t always better! Hopefully the allergy season dies down quickly! I love plants and trees but not right now…
I played in plenty of mud (in farm country, no less) in my day and here I am with three autoimmune diseases… I was sick for over a month in early February through most of March. I’m trying not to ponder if I had C-19, I had all of the symptoms. Tried to get tested but none were available at the time.

    Good morning!

Scent: Jour d’Hermes and Ormonde Jayne Osmanthus, because let’s be inclusive.

Reading: NYT (not mood-elevating; maybe I will go hit the recipes). Sheer escapism: Deanna Raybourn’s A Murderous Relation. I get stuck on the intermixing of the Victorian era with clearly modern sensibilities, and then I remind myself that sometimes, historical accuracy isn’t the point.

    Tea: Coffee right now.

Later: Making masks from tropical print batik quilting fabric. If we have to wear them throughout the summer (I’m assuming), we might as well have some bright ones.

Other: My birthday was Saturday, and the family got me a camera! Learning curve time!

Hi friends, wearing Mitzah today on Mayhem Memorial Day. It was one year ago today that we had to say goodbye to our precious cat, who was suffering from small cell lymphoma. My life last year was made very difficult by cancer. 2020 sucks, but compared to my 2019, my 2020 is honestly going ok so far.

We will eat foie gras for dinner in his honor (it resembles cat food, no?). Maybe some canned tuna. I welcome other ideas for a cat-themed meal.

Do you know what season I really miss from Toulouse? All the mushroom seasons. We do get seasonal chanterelles here in CA (which are actually girolles; it’s all very odd), but where is truffle season? Where is cepe season? That’s what I want to know. I can live without duck, but can I live without mushrooms?

I can’t see myself wearing a mask inside a crowded plane – I would rather not fly. And what do you do about selfish people who don’t wear masks? Also, do you serve food to every other person On every other row because, otherwise, everyone will be maskless at the same time? ? ?

I had to adult last night, so I’m just waking after a quick snooze. I’m wearing SB Incensed- nothing in common with Iris except for the “l.” ?

I’m not thrilled that the hospital has now returned to doing elective surgeries starting today and opening the previously closed units. The last couple of nights have also seen an explosion in the ER traffic. Also a little frustrated by the “youngsters” on my unit who constantly whine and walk around with their masks under their chins.

Last night I stationed myself away from everyone ( it’s a HUGE unit), and another nurse wanted to know why I was all by myself? Helllllo! Do you even have a single CLUE?! Bah humbug!

Hope you all are spared from adulting today cause it’s no fun! ✌?

      Yeah, Bah Humbug!

I’ve had a great attitude about COVID-19 until this weekend, when I agreed to go on an outdoor walk with my parents. They wanted to meet at a park that was literally OVERRUN with people; so many cars that there weren’t even enough parking spaces and people were bumping into each other, and 95% weren’t wearing masks.

It seems like this politically-charged moment is actually going to cause a fissure in my family, which makes me incredibly sad.

I’m sorry to hear about the family conflict. That makes a rough time exponentially more difficult. I don’t understand the vituperative attitude that so many are freely “expressing” by lashing out those who are trying to keep everyone else safe. ?

The way things are going the only nurses left will be new grads at the lower rungs of the pay scale.Where I worked there was a concerted effort to “encourage” nurses nearing retirement age (who also had years of experience and were serving as mentors to new nurses just learning real clinical judgment)to leave, that they just weren’t keeping up anymore.12 hour shifts are not kind to older nurses.

That’s sad. I can’t imagine that 12-hour shifts are beneficial to patients, either. Why are they doing that? Is there a shortage of nurses or what?

The hospitals always gave continuity of care as a reason for 12 hour shifts,i.e. a patient only has 2 nurses a day vs. 3 nurses. The staffing office only has to staff 2 shifts a day vs. 3 shifts =less resources used.To be honest, some nurses love 12 hour shifts so they can have more days off.The problem is no other options for the nurse who works more efficiently and provides better care on an 8 hour shift.

I think the “encouragement” you mentioned is more related to cost cutting than the 12 hour shift issue (which most of us LOVE because of the those delightful 4 days off). I’ve worked at facilities where long term RN’s that have started as CNA’s and worked their way up educationally and positionally have been forced into “retirement” because they are at the top of the pay scale. Their positions are eliminated (goodbye staff education nurses, CV patient education specialist RNs, DM patient education RN’s) or filled by new grads with no bedside experience for much lower pay levels, as you mentioned above. All this, of course, negativity impacts patient outcomes, readmission rates, etc. New RN’s are lasting only 2-3 years at bedside. Medicine in the US is dying a very slow and painful death. Hospitalists are overworked and harassed, the electronic record is basically copy, paste, no reading necessary. “Critical thinking” is an endangered species as hospitals continually add algorithms that eliminate or discourage it. For example, a facility I traveled to had such an aggressive CIWA protocol, nurses were afraid to not follow it because there’s such fall out if they didn’t. On occasions, I’ve received patients so obtunded that I could barely rouse them with a vigorous sternal rub because the previous RN was “following the protocol”. “Policy” and “protocol” are the new gods in hospitals, and while I agree they have their place, they shouldn’t be absolute law.

OK, I’m glad the schedule works on some level.
I agree, it’s all very worrisome! I “attended” a policy panel last week and found myself reminding the (in this case) very well intentioned economists to look at some of the issues from a patient’s perspective, too.
Also, doctors are scheduled too tightly. I always have to remind mine of key aspects of my history and reiterate my requests to renew my prescriptions, even though they have all that info in the computer in front of them. What will happen if/when I become forgetful?

Was thinking of you today! I went back today to “regular work” after a week off and a week on call. The nurses are NOT happy. After having empty units and no elective surgery last month, everybody had their hours and pay cut by 25%, with no double time on public holidays etc. Now elective surgery is starting up slowly and there is a surge in all the patients that stayed home for a month, but can’t bear to any more. Now, people are working staggered shifts and being run off their feet, trying to homeschool children and having to deal with hospital management who wants all the nurses to be tested for Covid-19 out of their OWN pockets, though it is a hospital infection control measure. Everybody sees the frontline nurses (probably well paid) in places like New York and think that that is the worst possible scenario. It’s not, the insidious damage that is being done to the medical profession through all this uncertainty, is much worse.

Totally agree with you. There are many ways hospital personnel, from EVS workers all the way up to hospitalists, are being treated so shabbily, not only financially, but also in managerial behaviors I see as straight up bullying. Be “complicit” with managerial methods, “comply” with hospital totalitarian under the radar directives, and “cooperate” or be “terminated.” All unspoken, but clearly implied. I will never be a staff RN again because I value the freedom of being able to walk away should I “disagree.”

It’s so much worse than people know. I know people that went anonymously to the media as whistleblowers regarding mistreatment happening right now (safety and compensation issues) and the hospital retaliated and revoked their department’s hazard pay. So awful.

Interesting, it never occurred to me that there was iris in Sur le Nil, but it does have a primary function as a fixative so it’s used in (or used to be used in) many more fragrances than one would think.

Wearing Olfactive Studio Iris Shot from the sample my perfume twin Lucas shared with me (here’s his recent review for this perfume: https://chemistinthebottle.wordpress.com/2020/03/11/olfactive-studio-iris-shot/). I like this warm, slightly spicy and sweet iris, but unless it’s released as a 15-20 ml travel bottle, I don’t think I’ll go beyond the sample.

I am going nuts cooped up. I am ready to take my chances going out in public using good judgement and get on with my life. I am officially ‘Co-over-IT’!
        We can’t do this forever.
I hope to have a good friend over for her bday tomorrow (cinco de mayo, a fortunate girl) and we will social distance on the terrace while drinking a margarita like old times and soak up the sun. It seems folks are easing back to normal, just not hugging and respecting each others comfort level when greeting. This may not be as hard as we thought.
It feels so good to be together.

I so agree with you! Workplaces should have policies to protect workers, care homes should have policies, it is not an all or nothing issue. But maybe people should have the option to decide what makes life worthwhile for themselves and what type of risks they are willing to take to live that life.

[ed note: removed last sentence, do not want to debate role of government here at all!]

When you say “I’ll take my chances” it makes me worry a bit that you think the purpose of social distancing is to protect oneself. It’s not – it’s to protect others. It would be great if we could all decide what risks we’re willing to take for ourselves only, but unfortunately because it is so easy to not know one has this disease, when we take risks we are risking everyone else as well. I am practicing strict social distancing because my friend’s dad is dying and I used to go out dancing with that lovely doctor from New York who killed herself after caring for so many dying patients overwhelmed her, and I want as few people as possible to suffer the way they have suffered. I am begging you to reconsider. There is no way our pain at staying indoors is greater than the pain of losing a loved one.

This American Life did a short piece about the psychological toll of the virus on NYC ems workers, and it really made an impression on me, probably more so because I did not hear it until after I heard about Lorna Breen (I think it aired earlier in April).

And I thank you for your concern, I would feel as you do were I in your situation. I honestly just don’t know the way forward here as we can’t remain as we are until, perhaps, the vaccine?? There are many risks along the way all clearly delineated. But eventually we have to dip our toe back in the water… and I am encouraged that folks are abiding by common sense and are being sensitive and respectful of others needs and comfort level by asking the right questions immediately to set the right parameters.

I went straight to the top with the incomparable SL Iris Silver Mist from a circa 2010 bell jar.

I bought that as a partial bottle, so a few years ago I bought the elegant black lacquered travel spray in order to be able to spritz with abandon. That newer version is woodier and less opulent, though.

I’d say the same about SL Bois de Violette, comparing my ca 2010 decant and later export spray versions. *shakes fist at IFRA and the accountants*

I saw you respond to my purchasing of La Myrrhe a few weeks ago but I wasn’t sure you’d see my response. I truly hadn’t smelled it until last year but it smells like the sample I’d gotten. I’m sure it has changed but to me, it smells lovely.

I’ve never had the nerve to buy a bell jar from eBay. Between the leakage potential and the fake potential, I’ve avoided it. But I hope you find your La Myrrhe someday!

I think one of the reasons I didn’t buy is that the bottle was in Italy, and I also worried the stopper would leak. But I’ve bought a lot of vintage perfume on ebay, and that has rarely happened.

SotD a repeat in Victorinox Snowflower because (1) it’s my only perfume downstairs and that’s where I’m at and (2) it’s one of the few perfumes containing iris that I have.

    HUGE sigh of relief!

Google was sending me a replacement cell phone so I could transfer data and then mail back the old phone, and provided they get the old one in 21 days all is well, as its under warranty.

BUT right now Canada Post just knocks and walks, leaving packages on the stoop!!!!!

I fully support this from a safety perspective, but I was terrified I would miss seeing/hearing the delivery and someone else would grab my replacement phone from my steps, leaving me on the hook for the cost!

Thankfully my vigilance worked (and knowing delivery normally happens between 2-4pm on my street), I spied the postal worker walking on the opposite sidewalk and was able to nab the parcel right after he knocked! WHEW.

Made Lemon Honey Cardamom tea cake yesterday, sourdough boule this morning, pizza dough rising for this evening, and my mangoes are taking forever to ripen so the deep dish pie just has to wait….

It should not be when they get it in 21 days because you don’t have control over it once it leaves your hands. I assume they sent a pre-paid label? If not, i would track it like it’s my conjoined twin.

          Exactly.

I have a feeling it is going to be even worse when they start to relax restrictions, because we are not going to be able to relax as much as others. It will be even crappier to not be able to go out for a bar burger and vermouth & soda when other people can (sitting at a bar and eating a burger and fries and drinking a vermouth is right now my absolute no. 1 thing I miss, which is sorta silly but hey it’s mine. No. 2 is a real live yoga class, and I’m not going to be able to do that either).

Robin, I was very happy to hear that your house didn’t get any major damage from that tree falling onto it.

It’s also “Metallica Monday” for me in addition to May The Fourth. I needed something to help me deal with the cobwebs this morning… spent far too much time last night playing a game on the computer. I paid dearly for that with massive sleep deprivation today. Bleah.

It was a tree we knew was going to fall on our house and had already made arrangements to have removed, then we had a big storm before the tree people managed to come over…so yes! We should have been quicker, but it fell in a very kind direction all things considered :-)

Don’t have much in Iris scents, although I imagine many of my scents have some in there. May wear the Prada Infusion on Friday but probably not. I don’t care for it. It’s all boring powder on me.

Showered and combined a light rose lotion with Body Shop Sakura oil. Topped with Seville à L’Aube. I smell fresh and clean.

I am perusing various summer berry cakes…may need to do some baking. Strawberry, raspberry or rhubarb. Hmmmm…decisions, decisions.

I sampling Dark is Night and Torn from Henry Rose today…am trying to got through old samples and use them or lose them…?

I am quite enjoying Dark is Night…lots of patchouli and vanilla. Torn has vanilla too but is spicier w/ vetiver. Both are very smooth to my nose.

I think their FBs are 50 ml for $120 and probably should be more like $60. :( But I applaud them for having two strong vanillas when they only have 5 or 6 fragrances in the whole collection I think. :)

I have been saddened and appalled reading certain news stories today…sometimes feel a bit ashamed to be human if that makes sense. Why can’t more people get into hobbies like perfume and just go about their damn lives without causing harm to others I’d like to know. Le sigh. End rant and on to keep sniffing my forearms compulsively. :)

I don’t know why I didn’t post earlier, as I kept I on reading the comments up until mid-afternoon, but I went with L’Attesa today. I’ve had a really nice day off work, just relaxed and read some, then finished up the Little Fires Everywhere series on Hulu. Walked to pick up a sandwich for lunch and did some chores. Feeling very glad to have had a day to myself after a really nice weekend with my boyfriend.

No CP for me today: Ferragamo Leather Rose. Why did I buy a sample of something discontinued? I don’t think it was a freebie.

Just read up on Iris scents and I (just barely) have enough for the rest of the week (if I’m in the mood each day to do the CP).
