Wednesday scent of the day 4/22

Posted by Robin on 22 April 2020 232 Comments

Hump Day and Earth Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I couldn't tell you how I ended up in Annick Goutal Mandragore, but that's what I'm wearing.

Reminder: on 4/24, wear a perfume by Santa Maria Novella, Sonoma Scent Studio, Smell Bent, S-Perfumes or Strange Invisible Perfumes if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter S.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I had to go buy Mr L is coconut milk this morning. (The grocery store a block away required masks and gloves and they put sanitizer on top of your gloves)
As I was running out the door, I realized that I wasn’t wearing perfume, so I did Shalimar.

My two little ones have lost interest in their Zoom classes. Well, so far for today. We had a little tea party instead. I made French Breakfast for myself and them Oolong. They love to watch the leaves open up in the hot water.

    Sorry I am rambling…

I enjoy your outfits of the day :) I am mainly wearing jeans and flannel shirts, no makeup or earrings because of the mask. Compensating by wearing lots of rings, often six or seven – I’m ringthing, after all.

I love that you are wearing all those rings. I should accessorize more. You are giving me some ideas..
        What are your favorites.

My style hasn’t changed much since the 70s. Sterling silver and opaque stones, lots of turquoise, onyx, malachite etc etc. But I also love the unique and the sparkly, so it runs the gamut. Right now I’m really enjoying a vintage sterling cameo that I found on Poshmark (and promptly bought with my sales money.) The cameo part is all fashioned from silver and she has long hair, I’ve never seen anything like her before.

I was just thinking about accessorizing (or not, these days) yesterday – I realized that since I’ve been working from home I haven’t worn earrings or my fancy watch or high heels at all for over a month (or my wedding rings very much either), but I do wear perfume every day. Priorities. :)

Yep, that’s my daily attire too. Plus a pair of Birkenstock’s. I took all my rings off because hand jewelry harbors bacteria and other microscopic pathogens. I feel a bit naked in the jewelry department ?

I also love that you are dressing up each day, and with small children, no less! I am still wearing eye makeup on many days, but have completely stopped with lip products, because masks, so what’s the point. I don’t dress up much, just variations on jeans and sweats. But I have been really upping my game on body care–long baths with exfoliating scrubs, sheet face masks, bubbles, etc.

I still wear earrings every day (because without earrings my sense of identity crumbles to dust) but gave up on rings with all the hand washing.

Good luck. I went to the grocery store yesterday early (with my mask) and it was quite busy. They told me it’s dead around 1:00 – so I’ll try that next time. One woman got mad at me when I tried to go down an aisle that was one way. I didn’t see their little 10 x 10″ sign on the floor (nothing at eye level). And only two of their ten aisles were marked one way. How is that helpful – make them all one way! I just said “sorry, I didn’t see it” but then I felt stressed about being there.

I’m going right now – been putting it off for two weeks. Agreed – they should make them all one way, and put big arrows on the floor with tape, or something, like they do in Singapore:

At Wegmans, I was picking tomatoes when this guy came near me. I was almost done but wanted to get a different variety and I moved away to get a bag. The guy moved away and as soon as I was back by the tomatoes he came near me again. I finally shouted MOVE AWAY and waved my hand to shoo him away.

I was digging through the closet this morning and came up with Sonia Kashuk Yellow Alluriana. Notes are grapefruit, slightly sweet citrus and musk. Glad I got this at 40% off a few months ago, but my bottle of Chanel EdC is hissing ‘how dare you’, and giving me the squinty eyeball.

I got a package yesterday and couldn’t figure out why it was so heavy..well somehow I ordered a 117 oz can of beans. I must have thought it was 11.7 oz -or something -and quickly checked out. I guess I was distracted. Lol.
So now I have a can o beans the size of a baby. I will have enough fiber till 2022. I also didn’t realize I ordered 2000 Qtips..same order. Smh lol.

A drop, just one, of Demeter Amber, which is the powdery-vanilla-amber base you’ve smelled a thousand times, but uncomplicated by top or middle notes, just the amber. It’s really nice. When Demeter gets it right, they sure do get it right.

The house smells like the yeast dough that is currently on its final rise, and in half an hour or so it will smell like cinnamon-raisin buns. I have been doing so much baking in the last month! I mean, me and everybody else: you pretty much can’t get yeast any more. I have a jar with enough for 14 more bakes, and then, well, I guess I’ll have to start breaking into people’s houses to steal theirs.

Unsurprisingly, Demeter has a Cinnamon Bun scent (no raisins, though). Haven’t tried it, but a lot of their sweet/dessert fragrances are quite nice. It was once part of a Sweet Delights collection that actually had a recipe for the namesake printed right on the label: Angel Food, Caramel, Marshmallow, Cotton Candy, and a bunch of others.

Nah, I live in a real small city, barely even deserving of the name, on the east coast of Canada, and we don’t seem to have any such sellers open to the public. But thanks!

I bet that by the time I need more yeast, it’ll be in the stores: there’s lots of things that we’re a little short on but supplies keep arriving so it’s just a matter of time. They’re still busily making yeast and flour, last I heard.

I was able to find the single use packets in Ingalls the other day. There were only a few left, and no jars to be had anywhere. Maybe try a smaller grocer who is not so highly trafficked?

Finding my zen today in SSS Yin and Ylang.

I’m having a huge van clean out party that’s lasting multiple days. Everything is coming out, vacuum top to bottom, tossing things I haven’t needed/used in over a year, rearranging everything to ensure I’ll never find anything next time I need it…!

So far, I have found about 20 pens hiding in all kinds of nooks and crannies. Lots of dog hair, kibble pieces, broken glass (still!) from the break in a while back. As far as money is concerned, max of about 20 cents, all in pennies. ?

Spent the morning arguing with Gap. I had placed an order on the 4th and what I ordered still haven’t shipped. I get that with the Covid-19 virus, things are delayed, but how many emails are you going to send me about how you guys are cleaning? Barbox was easier to deal with. They explained with the virus, things are a little slower in regards to shipping but if I don’t get my package by the 27th or ends up lost in transit to let them know. Still in Lyric but getting in the shower to get some groceries. I think I will wear no 22 today.

Woohoo! Multi-tasking on a conference call and commenting at the same time! It’s finally going to be warm today (yay, I love warm weather) and I chose Tocca Colette. I find it sunny and warm!

I’ve been still coming into the office during the pandemic but now we have new guidance that we are going to have to start wearing masks on Monday. Up until now, it was only required if you were not able to maintain 6 feet of social distance, but now it looks like it’s going to be a firm requirement regardless. If that is the case, I will be asking to telecommute. I’ve been trying to hang in there, but I cannot wear a mask for 10 hour days (healthcare workers, you are amazing). It gives me mad anxiety thinking about it, I feel like I’m suffocating. I can barely wear one to grocery shop without feeling panicky by the time I check out.

I worked in a lab for 14 years and had to wear a mask everyday (and scrubs and a hair bonnet) The one thing that bothered me was not the anxiety, but it would aggravate my peri-oral dermatitis around my mouth. I put up with it, because I loved what I did at the time.

Also, rummaging in the cupboard and discovered I had garbanzo bean flour, made socca bread (equal parts flour/water, dash of olive oil, pinch of salt, toss in a cast iron skillet, let sit to thicken for 1/2 hour, place in a preheated 450 oven for 6-9 minutes).
It can be a great gluten free pizza crust (I added sauce, cheese and arugula leaves) or add a touch of sugar and top with feta cheese and drizzle with honey for a relatively healthy dessert.

    I will join you Robin!
From yesterday a link to Prince piano practice: https://youtu.be/p9D5K1Pue2U
Did you see the Prince Grammy special last night?
    Imho it was surprisingly good.
Happy EarthDay, here is a quote from his song “Planet Earth”:

    “Imagine holding Planet Earth
In the palm of your hand
With no regard for your place of birth
    Or claim to any land

The only thing between us now is the truth we understand
If Planet Earth was in the palm of your hand

50 years from now what will they say about us here?
Did we care for the water and the fragile atmosphere?

There are only 2 kinds of folk
    And the difference they make
    The ones that give
    And the ones that take

    [Chorus:]
    Just like the countless bodies
    That revolve around the sun
Planet Earth must now come into balance with the one,
That caused it all to be
Then we’ll see His kingdom come,
So shall it be written, so shall it be sung

Imagine you could rid the Earth
    Of anyone you choose
Which ones would you need the most
And which ones would you lose?

Do we want to judge another
    Lest we be judged too?
Careful now… The next one might be you….”

    Prophetic wouldn’t you say?

Sitting here experiencing a sneezing attack. I have a very odd sneeze trigger…been experiencing it my entire life. If I eat too quickly or too much, it triggers sneeze attacks..10-15 sneezes. I didn’t have breakfast and just finished a large, delicious rotisserie chicken sandwich. Triggered! No idea why I have this reaction.

A very good friend of ours was battling COVID-19 at home the past few weeks.

At some point, the built-up fluid triggered a heart attack, which he didn’t realize. He continued to stay at home until he finally hit the ER on Monday after realizing he could barely move without being out of breath. His bp level when he arrived was 230/140! I’m not a nurse, but I’ve had to deal with hypertension. 230/140 is very high. Normal is 120/80 or less (some practitioners say 130).

After I broke my arm, mine was close to 160, which was higher than I could remember ever having, and I asked about getting my medication adjusted. They said it was probably just temporary (and it did go down after the first week). They also said that had been over 180, they would have acted immediately to get it down because of the risk of stroke.

I’ve been reading about how the affects of COVID-19 can really sneak up on people. I’m glad your friend got care in time!

I’m in SSS Pacific Forest today. I love it, but it turns out I should have worn something with more spine-straightener in it because I’m having to deal with more than the usual amount of co-worker stupidity / laziness / lack of ability to Read The Instructions I Sent Weeks Ago. There, I’ve vented. Thank you for listening, and we now return you to our regularly scheduled perfume-related conversation.

InD&G Late Roue de la Fortune or Angel light as I call it.

I saw ducklings at the pond near home this afternoon, six of them who enjoyed the seeded bread I brought, the lilacs are in bloom, deeply inhaled a white one.

It’s pouring rain so I wanted something cheery. 12 sprays of Mediterraneo should do it. The Oregon seafood industry is being hit hard with no restaurants buying, so some companies are selling retail, plus free shipping! I bought clams and oysters, so I’m making chowder, stew, and fried oysters and clams.

I’ve been wondering when restaurant suppliers would figure out how to go retail.

I ordered powdered milk from an Amazon associated seller who turned out to be a company that supplies food services. Yes, that’s in addition to the 10 pounds I ordered from the bakery supply company. I’m not feeling total milk security yet, though; wondering if I should have at least ordered ONE 55-lb sack…

Do you drink powdered milk? I last had some 30 years ago and it was terrible. Is it better now?

It’s a matter of getting used to it. My goal is 4 cups of milk each day, and there’s no way I can carry or store that much liquid milk. Also, liquid skimmed milk spoils faster than the other types for some reason. And I only use it with coffee or cereal, not straight.

SotD is Kenzo Amour Indian Holi. This has been such a lovely, comforting scent for me lately and I haven’t had much interest in wearing anything else. ?
This had languished in my stash cupboard for ages, until I went down to rummage around for some new things to wear and came upon the bottle. I hadn’t worn it much initially, but now I’m in love. Then, as any good perfumista would do, I thought, “hmm, maybe I need a back-up bottle” and went to look at the usual sites. Man, what a rude awakening that was! Guess this one will have to get me through alone, lol!

I’m waiting on a LUSH order… their website was saying that orders had a 2 week delay for shipping. I will let you all know what timeline I end up with.

SOTD = back in Prada Candy. I’m thinking I want to thunk this sample… I discovered I had a whole little stash of it among my perfume samples and decants. I have almost 10mL of it!

Scent last night and this morning was C & E lavender hand therapy cream. Last night I thought about putting on a dab from my sample of Jicky, since the scents don’t clash, but fell right to sleep after putting the hand cream on. I wasn’t alert enough by that point to figure out which box had Guerlain samples in it.

Today was a very successful grocery shopping day. I found a bunch of things that Mom and Dad and I needed, so I was very pleased. (Mom was pleased also.) We could still use some OTC allergy stuff, but that’s much cheaper at Walmart than a grocery store. The items are on the Walmart list.

Our friend who sews, Mrs. L., called to say that she’d finished sewing three masks using the pattern from the New York Times. We were in the neighborhood, conveniently enough, so I picked those up. I was very happy about that, too, because the disposable masks I’d reused a few times each were getting raggedy on the inside. I’ve washed the new fabric masks, and they’re drying now.

Altogether it was a very productive day by my standards. :)

Yes, I’m pleased to have gotten so much done. I should go to bed soon, and it probably wouldn’t hurt me to put some diluted lavender oil on dry spots on my skin.

Oh, I forgot to say that I like that flower picture at the top. You found a very bright-colored, frilly tulip there, Robin. :) It seems like you’re getting a lemming for parrot tulips. The pink and white parrot tulip from last week was another pretty, frilly one. :) Old House Gardens is offering a red and white parrot tulip for fall of 2020 planting, Estelle something, but in the picture you put up last week the flower had a softer coloring.

Uneasy trip to Petsmart where we had to figure out how to do a no contact pickup. She said a couple times she could hand it to me, I said..naa then she said ok, I will leave it up front for you. Then I also had to tell the grocery delivery guy to stop walkin before he handed me the groceries..he would have just kept goin.

Several ppl out with masks today..and some not a worry in the world it seemed. Some kids out playing not minding the social distancing rules. I so wanted to stop by In and Out on the way home. A nice, cold rootbeer and fries sound delish.
