Monday scent of the day 4/13

Posted by Robin on 13 April 2020 271 Comments

It’s Thomas Jefferson Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm not quite done with the Hermès drawer — this morning I went for Terre d'Hermès.

Reminder: on 4/17, we're doing edition 5 of the Picture Challenge. Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Three Dancers, Mills College, 1930, by photographer Imogen Cunningham. More reading here, or listen to a brief interview on Cunningham here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

        Make up twins also.

Touche Éclat Foundation with SPF, have you tried it?
So far the look is not “caked” or too heavy. It feels light. Medium/light coverage but has the possibility for more if you apply more.

I did try it, but it was years ago when it first came out. I think it’s been reformulated since then. I have a bit of difficulty finding a good shade/undertone match with YSL…?

These days I only wear make-up when I’m working. Since I wear a mask when I am out and about, it’s better for me to not wear make-up or it may end up making my cloth mask harder to launder.

    Tulips are my favorite!

I’m in ELDO Fils de Dieu for a day of laundry and grocery shopping. I’m inordinately excited about the grocery run! Trying to make up my mind about where to go; Target, Walmart, Ingalls, or Whole Foods. The CHOICES!

Also planning on making some banana bread, which is another exciting part of my day since I’m not able to bake anything when I’m in #vanlife Mode. ?

Sharing a virtual piece of banana bread with you all✌?

Oh great! When I lived in the north I had a big garden full of tulips and would invest in fancy parrot tulips, purple and black ones, etc. I just love them! They won’t really grow down here though. One day .i will visit Holland at tulip-time!

Yes! Thanks :) Actually, I bought Hyde blind (terrible terrible idea; I shouldn’t have done it), but it’s SPECTACULAR and I love it! I had meant to offer up a decant or two for splitting, but splitting during the crisis seems challenging. Anyway, I love both of the scents, and the bottles are sooooo adorable, and they were my first purchase of 2020, so I feel ok about it :)

She is on Instagram and seems really nice. She posted today about how hard things have been during the shut-down and how she is keeping herself occupied with her perfume cabinet and working there with so many nice smells around. Hope she’s making some good new ones. I know she has a rose scent in the works. She sent a small sample of it with a recent order I made (the small bottle of First Cut).

Back at work this week. We are splitting our departments into weekly shifts, and I was off last week. I am glad to get out of the house. I have switched perfume houses from Hermes to L’Artisan. Today I’m wearing L’Ete en Douce, for the first time. I don’t believe that I’ll need another decant of this one.

I’m on spring break – woo! I’m heading to Napa (well, in my head. Maybe I’ll drink a glass of wine later.)

I’m wearing No. 5 L’Eau – it always makes me feel close to my mom, because she wears the original No. 5. My parents were supposed to fly down here for spring break and I’m really bummed that it couldn’t happen, but I’m so glad that they’re safe, healthy and comfortable back in Canada. (I just wish it would stop snowing for them, because they are mighty sick of winter.)

I organinzed my makeup this morning and came to the sobering realization that if I paint my nails every single week for the next five years (which is extremely unlikely), I still would have enough nail polish to paint my nails every week for another decade afterwards. And 90% of it is grey or taupe. I really like neutral nails? Also, I appear to own every neutral brown eyeshadow palette ever produced. I really need to branch out and try some colors with pizazz.

My absolute favorite isn’t technically just browns – it’s got a bit of pink and purple snuck in as well. It’s the Golden Hour Cover Shot palette by Smashbox.

I actually got a compliment on my eye makeup (from this very palette) over my mask today, which made me resolve to be extra diligent about applying eye makeup. Eyes really are our only point of connection now, aren’t they?

Rainy, windy day. Wearing Chanel Misia EdT. A forgotten friend that I love and not wear much.
Just finished a teleconference with our team members at work. We were saying goodbye to one of our dear colleagues who is retiring today. Kind of bittersweet, since we would have loved to do it personally. Such a great man. We all had coffee/tea and cookies to share the moment with him and wish him the best!

Still bunkered in the pharmacy with no open doors or windows, so zero full strength perfume is allowed! (Which is ok and completely understandable…)

Still had to do something for myself though, so a couple of light sprays of BBW Fresh Cut Lilacs fragrance mist is light enough to make me happy and no one else is likely to notice!

It’s very cold and windy today! 12 sprays of Anima Dulcis should warm me up.
I was up at 4:50 this morning, and did a workout and rearranged my walk-in closet before 7:30. This is NOT normal behaviour for me. Maybe just getting stir-crazy.
I really love the CP photo. I guess my scent goes with it; The high, bright sun and the stuccoed wall, the dry stone courtyard and dark-haired dancers, could be Mexico; California’s close.

Puredistance White this morning. Smells lovely but I will certainly not need more than the sample I currently have :)

This weekend, I painted a watercolor tree! I am absolutely not a visual artist, so I was excited that it looks like a tree. I have some oil pastels, so those will be my next project. I know all you lovely people encouraged me to stop feeling the need to stuff my life with projects for the sake of my sanity, but I think visual art is good for me. I already know I have no talent for it, so I don’t feel much pressure to be good :)

K, congratulations on the painting! It’s nice to tap into one’s artistic side, especially in a low-stakes situation. I took a few flower photos this weekend at the request of a friend in a flower-free part of the country, and event hat felt rewarding as I am no photographer

I haven’t doused myself with anything yet this morning, but I did want to check in with y’all and tell you about a lovely discovery I made yesterday.

So, waaaaaay back when I first fell down the perfume rabbit hole, I did a lot of blind bargain buying (okay, I still do a lot of that, but I’ve toned it down a bit). At some point, I bought a dirt cheap bottle of Balenciaga Rumba. There were some notes I liked, but I didn’t fall in love with it, and there was a certain “cheap” quality to the initial spritz – I think the top notes might have been overwhelmed by I dunno, alcohol, or something. Anyhoo, it’s been in the back of my perfume cabinet for several years.

    Stay with me.

Since I’ve been cooped up at home, I’ve been dragging out a lot of these rarely used bottles and spraying them a la chocolatemarzipan, but in my closets and cabinets. I spritzed Rumba 5 times in my guest room closet. Again, the top notes triggered a “nice, okay, good for a closet spray” reaction.

Three hours later, there was the most lovely, “strolling quietly through a Japanese temple” incense vibe throughout the guest room. Apparently, it’s all in the dry down.

Ha! I love this. I have never thought to spray my closet with perfume. I usually stick a bar of soap but eventually stop noticing any scent

Yes, I’ve done the soap thing, but it does fade after a while. I like using perfume as home sprays, because it lets me use up a lot of scents that otherwise would just sit in the cabinet, and it’s nice to have a way to scent my space that doesn’t require burning a candle or using diffusers.

I have been doing this w/ old samples and decants but need to get serious with my old, unloved bottles and start spraying w/ those too.

I spray all areas/rooms and it’s very interesting how the scents linger and the notes change over time.

I also do a lot of spritzing elsewhere: in the shower stall pre-shower (this method is fabulous with the heat of the water), in the bathroom cabinets, in the nozzles of my humidifiers, and on note papers that I place on the floor of my car.

I needed something grassy and springy, so I’m wearing Tom Ford Ombre de Hyacinth. My birthday weekend was so good I am still in a fairly good mood even though it’s Monday. I hope the mood helps me get through a grocery store trip today.

So let me tell you about the amazing meal my boyfriend came up with last night. I said over the weekend he was making cheesy cheddar grits, collard greens, and shrimp for my birthday on Saturday. Well, that was delicious, and we still had grits leftover. So last night he made something inspired by a Monte Cristo sandwich. He did a flour and panko breading and fried up cheesy grit cakes. Those were served as open face sandwiches with a light later of cranberry orange spread, ham, and one over easy egg to split up among the three grit cakes. I told him he’s not going to get away with just making that meal once!

Thanks everybody for reminding me about Easter, I forgot. I was running low on chocolate so headed online to stock up. Post-Easter chocolate sales! It’s day 3 of password changing. Amazon says I have been a member since 1996 and some of my online accounts are a little older than that, so there are a lot of changes still to be made. I’m wearing C & E Sandalwood today, not the Mysore, but the next gen that Pixel sent me in a swap. So good. Happy Monday to all.

An orchid I bought around Mother’s Day last year at Trader Joe’s is reblooming and has 4 open blossoms and 7 pending! :)

    SotD = No. 5 edp

Such a happy smell for me, No. 5 makes me feel dressed up while wearing yoga pants and t-shirt. ?

Today’s to do’s include an hour of yoga then some general tidying up. This weekend was the first time in I don’t know how long I said “nah” to my Saturday chores, knowing full well I would have to face them on Monday – can’t escape then by going to work. ?

Yesterday my daughter and I went to my parents’ house and talked to them from far away while drawing cheerful eggs, chicks, and bunnies with chalk on their driveway and sidewalk. Strange but fun. ???

Happy Schmunday, fragrant friends! Day 27 of social distancing and WFH for me. I’m counting the days by folding an origami butterfly each day then tacking it up on my wall. ? How about you? Keeping track or just letting it flow, it’s all good. ??

So windy and rainy and my umbrella broke so came into my 1st day at work soaked. 1st time in the subway in many weeks, and there’s nothing to miss. Quite a few people on some of the train lines. Most masked, though.
I’m wearing Kelly Caleche which could be a lithe dancer perfume.

The G was pretty empty. I take the G>7>4/5>6>Bx 21 bus ? The 7 was pretty crowded, as was the 4/5/6 until it hit the Bronx.

It is, especially now. The G and 7 were running like every 17 min or something painful. You’re not missing anything right now. There also seems to be 2 camps of people: the socially responsible ones and the deliberately defiant ones (like in your face when they don’thave to be). I’m headed down on the 6 now and the car I’m in is sooo littered. And food litter at that ?

Really what I’m thinking sbout carrying is pepper spray…

Craving Easter chocolate today and nearly gave into the sales..but I wanna hold out for when chocolate shops open back up here and make it extra special?

My tp order went through surprisingly. My advice, check the Cottonelle website..click on product availability..if anything is available..you can click it to cart. Check back fairly often of course. We all got extra time to keep checking? Lol. Apparently I do?

Honestly I haven’t been as jazzed lately to wear perfume..and kinda craving gourmands of all things and maybe even citrus..which I never crave. Probably commando today but was lookin at some Loves Lemon to maybe get..I was too young for that phase in the 70s(barely too young). Something easy and light sounds good right now.

I think I mentioned that I wore it on the day that I had my beloved cat Dusty put to sleep. I was feeling so ill that day all day and I think it helped some. Nice long shower, that I turned to very warm followed by cool at end. Followed by a mix of rose scented body lotion and a heavier-duty Jergens. (After I picked up the acorn sitting on the bath mat and returned it to its bowl…)

And then too many sprays to count of Baiser de Russie. Wind and rain here called for something pretty and fresh – floral and pine.

Lovely shrimp dinner last night. My husband uses a brown sugar rub that is delicious. Tonight we will just forage. I have a call, and he will be studying.

Since we are counting, I realized it’s right about day 34 of SIP/social distancing. My last “real” outing was a movie in a virtually empty theater on March 10. Even then I had started spraying the hand rests with alcohol and using sanitizer.

Aqua di Parma Rosa Nobile, a gift from my brother’s ex-boyfriend from years ago. It is so pretty and youthful, and reminds me strongly of a perfume I had when I was young, but I don’t recall exactly what that scent was. Maybe even an Herbal Essences form the 90s? Who knows.

Hi everyone. We were supposed to get storms but they bypassed us except for very strong winds. Now this morning it is just gloriously clear and cool (60s)–wonderful because we had already been having days of humidity and up into the 90’s. I’m going out soon to go on a walk with a friend in her neighbourhood–we will keep distance but at least we can talk. I’m so excited to do something with someone else for a change! I’m wearing Parfums MDCI Les Indes Galantes. I bought several samples from them in a recent SC sale. The line seems to share a basic DNA of somewhat sweet excess. I do like this one but not as much as the one yesterday, Andalusian Nights or whatever it is in French (orange blossom anyway). This one is awfully sweet candied fruits, and I think it has a musk in it that’s poking my nose.

Sprayed Absolue d’Osmanthus (Perris Monte Carlo) earlier, and it’s still lingering. Osmanthus is right up there among my tippy top most loved notes, though I often feel like it’s too transparent and fleeting. This one is deep and rich. I get little glimpses of the sandalwood, down underneath a gorgeous, jammy floral apricot osmanthus top/heart. I love it!

My heart is bleeding for family and friends (and many of you) in the states where things just seem so uncoordinated and chaotic. Stay safe everyone. Macron just spoke this evening and we will continue the fairly strict lockdown until 11 May — been confined for 4 weeks, another 4 weeks to go. And then we will see where we are. What a time.

You smell beautiful! That one is rich, but I found it wearable.

Also, my hubs sent me a photo of the N95 mask donation that I facilitated for them from Blackbird perfumes. 500 masks (and I had it addressed directly to his ICU to keep them out of administrative hands)!!!

So if anyone is looking to suppport a small business, these guys rock! And I’m just seeing now that they now make some candles…

It is and it wasn’t like you had to buy their products and a percentage would go to donation. They did ask for just direct mask donation. I thought that was cool of them to spend their time doing that.

SotD EldO Vierges et Toreros because a few other people were wearing the same house today.

I do indeed like it better on me the warmer the temperature is, it’s disgusting out but far less frigid than previous weeks, and I do indeed smell more of that “sexy goat” that made me love it initially.
