Memo Ocean Leather, Jamal’s Palace & Retba ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 8 April 2020 17 Comments

French niche line Memo has launched three new fragrances: Ocean Leather, Jamal's Palace and Retba.

Ocean Leather (above center) ~ Cuirs Nomades collection. "Memo Paris’ Ocean Leather unveils an oceanic freshness meeting the depth of the leather accord. In the middle of the ocean, feeling an animal’s electric presence. The water comes alive secretly, the air is filled with a unique scent. A jet of water vapor appears, bringing a splash of mandarin, violet, basil. At first, an apparition. Then, it reveals itself, with its skin coloured like elemi fruits, smooth and shiny, thanks to the millions of water drops. A whale, carrying with him the murmur of depths, the stories shared from boat to boat, with decks smelling like cedar, the strength of sailors, their look, the power of their hands. In its track, the citrus freshness welcomes deeper nuances of sage, nutmeg, vetiver. Imposing as an ironclad, its cuirass, its leather skin, protects it. It is its force, its secret. And the Captain knows it."

Jamal's Palace (above right) ~ "Jamal's Palace is a modern oud fragrance, fresh and fruity on top with a floral heart. The oud is here combined to an overdose of Amber and leather essence for an intense signature." Additional notes include saffron and gardenia.

Retba (above left) ~ Les Echappées collection. "A lake electing pink as a color. Pink pepper. Raspberry. Rose. The intensity of the magenta shade depends on the sun and its reflection on the water. Bright sun, bright pink, as a respond to ultraviolet. Is it a flower? Is it a plant? This lake is like a field, where the most delicate species could grow and offer a surface of pure visual beauty. A field of saffron. Of ginger. This lake is a salty kingdom and to calm down the white fire, finding oud, amber, myrrh, vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg and guaiacwood on its banks is now a possibility. Like a balm. Memo dedicates a perfume to this unique place."

Memo Ocean Leather, Jamal's Palace and Retba are available in 75 ml Eau de Parfum.

Only problem is that the bottle design plus name somehow suggests this perfume involves whale skin. ?

The description of Retba is confusing, but intriguing. Memo’s bottles are beautiful, but three together? Totally gorgeous. They figured out their marketing strategy. The more Memo bottles in a display or advertisement–the more enticing.

There are only 2 new ones on the Memo website, the OL is only at Harvey Nicks as far as I can tell? So maybe they try to prevent launch fatigue that way.

Yes there are some grammar problems in there. Is there really a pink lake somewhere?

Okay, but does it calm down the white fire?

Finally, cuirass used in the context of perfume, with a whale featured to carry the story. Perhaps I had my crystal ball when I inadvertently (re)named Curiass Beluga ?

I really like Cuirs Nomades line, especially Italian Leather… But animal’s electric presence in the ocean sounds like the easiest way of being electrocuted…

Hahaha, the old electric eel technique!

I’ve been pretty impressed with the Memos I’ve sniffed thus far, and oh, their bottle designs! Alas, they’re out of my price range.
