Tuesday scent of the day 3/24

Posted by Robin on 24 March 2020 275 Comments

It's Tuesday, and William Morris's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Etro Shaal Nur.

Reminder: on 3/27, wear a perfume by Robert Piguet, Rochas, Roger & Gallet or Reminiscence, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter R.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows a floral spoon set, which I found variously described as for tea, dessert or soup, but I'm calling them teaspoons because it is Tuesday. The set is $27 at Miya.

Pretty spoons. I like the cat on pillow ones also. I have a pair of long, flowered acrylic ice tea spoons that I absolutely love and are surprisingly useful.

Shopping in my sample boxes. Pulled out two I got awhile back via Indigo Perfumery from Perris MC. Decided to go with Cedro di Diamante today. What a great citrus!

Need to go for a walk today. That sunshine is too appealing. No need to hit grocery or other places, so easy to maintain distance.

That’s so kind of you. On his very few outings my H still hasn’t been able to find any hand sanitizer, or clorox products or disinfectants.

      And…for all you tea people…

I’m drinking Osulloc Camellia Flower Blooming Forest tea from Jeju. A friend sent me some tea from a visit to that S. Korea island. Gorgeous.

    Good morning Y’all!

Decided to go with Chanel Gabrielle today…according to my Basenotes diary, I haven’t worn it in 2 YEARS! WOW! Where does the time go anyway??? I really like the black current note in it…..

I really like that one, too! It’s easy breezy and luminous. You smell great.

I never got Kristin Stewart as the face of Gabrielle – she is more Coromandel to me.

I’m wearing SSS Equestrian from a kind NSTer.

I’m going trade my van in for a boat. The rain had hardly stopped since I left Arizona. Pastures and fields here are underwater. The flip slide is the trees have dressed themselves in their spring finery and T-Rex is enjoying her grazing.

I spent many hours recently looking at bouillon cups and ramekins on amazon, which led to looking at bowls suitable for ramen & pho, which led to my finding a really cute ramen-themed t-shirt that I had shipped to my nephew in Canada for his birthday. The rabbit hole of online shopping is deep and wide and one never knows where it will lead ?

. . . yes too hard to resist! I just bought 4 white cereal bowls, free shipping, less than $9 total. :D I kid myself that I needed a few more white cereal bowls because I only have 4 left, the kids keep breaking them, and it’s ok, I can stop anytime I want, I don’t need anything else, but those blue and white soba bowls are pretty cute, maybe I’ll just have a quick look at miya again . . .

OK, so my sister and I both love this little store in Portland ME called Folly 101. Via Folly 101, unknowingly we have been collecting items from this importer for several years now…I happened upon the Miya catalog this morning and went Aha! Immediately sent to my sister (email subject: fiddling while rome burns) and I’m sure we both will lose hours today.

So I already have a collection of their little bowls, plus rectangle plates and what I now know are “soba cups”. Definitely going to be adding to that pile…

Hehehe, how wonderful! I also very much enjoy the subject line of your email to her.

Soba cups are such a darling shape! It’s a good thing we have minimal empty cabinet space, or my wallet would be very light today.

I use the soba cups for a surprising number of things, and have the little matching “sauce bottle” for one of the designs — that, I admit, I have little use for, but it is darned cute.

Ahhhh omg staaaaahp. I love that. When I’ve seen things like that, I’ve assumed they are sake bottles! I want that so much. Do you use the bottle as decoration?

What do you use your soba cups for?

          • Robin says:
            24 March 2020 at 5:24 pm

I think the bottle is too small for sake? But I don’t drink sake so what do I know. Right now mine has a magnolia bud in it.

The cups are a great size for ice cream, nuts, etc, anything you want to eat but not eat too much of. Also good for oolong tea, assembling items for food prep — really anything you’d use a small bowl for.

So far they seem to do fine in both dishwasher and microwave (I have melted butter in them, for instance).

            24 March 2020 at 7:44 pm

Robin, I just remembered a poll idea that I keep forgetting to suggest! What is the weirdest / most beautiful / most useful / silliest / etc thing that you bought on ebay / or wherever because you were browsing for perfume?

(If you haven’t already done this one while I was distracted.)

I used to look at a seller’s other items if they had a vintage perfume I was searching for, and I’ve occasionally succumbed to the darnedest things!

My rationale for looking at the seller’s other items, BTW, was that if they had one desirable vintage perfume, they might well have others from the same estate sale or collection. I found some good ones that I would never even have thought to search for that way!

    SotD = Ambre Narguile

Koyel’s 5 O’clock au gingembre made me want something spicy. Thank you, Koyel!

I have a 3 ml sample vial of AN that is more than half empty. I wear it sparingly and know that the sample will last a looooong time, but I still wonder if more is a good idea. Too much is never enough. :)

It’s cold and chilly here. I’m again on dogwalking duty for a friend. I stuck my head outside and it’s sprinkling. As soon as the clouds break we’re off on a long ramble.

I keep thinking about what people would do during the Black Plague in the Middle Ages. Apparently one of the more persistent beliefs was that the disease was about bad miasma and that scent was used to ward off the risk of infection.

Robin, you smell wonderful, and those spoons are adorable.

I chose PG Cuir d’Iris for today, another perfume that is a bit too much for the office. I’m so lucky to have found a bottle on Basenotes a year and a half ago.

Well, I’ve hated to not be able to get to posting and reading comments here throughout the day for the last week or so. With everything going on, I was spending a lot more time looking at news updates. I also went in for a long overdue eye exam the Friday before last, which confirmed what I knew: I need glasses for the first time in my life. My right eye is the worse of the two, and it had been aching the week of my appointment. I’ve been getting lots of headaches around my eyes, and they’re very much brought on by looking at screens all the time. That’s a major reason I’m not reading NST as much. In the evening my eyes need a break, and the phone screen is the worst of all.

And what terrible timing for needing glasses since I’ve been forced to work from home and use just a laptop instead of two larger monitors. I am still waiting on the glasses to come in and hope they’ll be able to mail them to me with everything going on.

Anyway, I hope everyone’s Tuesday is as nice and fragrant as possible!

This cp is giving me a reason to test all my R samples. I’ve got Raw Spirit Winter Oak on one hand and Summer Rain on the other. My sweater has the drydown of Coromandel from last week, and that’s winning.?
Thanks again to everyone for your kind words yesterday, I’m not ashamed to admit I’m a big baby when it comes to dental work. Slept well last night and (knock on wood!) am pain free today.?
I have another research paper due this week and then another next week! So that will be what I’m working on today. Meanwhile my girls are busy beating each other at PlayStation LEGO Harry Potter. Yep, they are really using this time to be productive.?

I think none of us should ever have to apologize for being afraid of dental work. It’s so often SO unpleasant! I have such anxiety that when I first began going to my nice new dentist I asked if she could prescribe Xanax for me and she did. It’s now gotten so I trust her enough that I can go there without it. But it’s something worth asking about especially when you are having a major procedure done like an extraction. Of course then someone has to drive you but it’s worth it. I’m scheduled to have an MRI done of my hip replacement (one year anniversary coming up) and asked them to give me Xanax and they will. Of course, as things are going, I suspect it’ll be canceled or postponed, which is OK by me. It’s not till April 8.

You are so right Calypso, it is often so unpleasant! I have anxiety too and I think it stems back to my teenage years of when I had my wisdom teeth out. I know several coworkers who also take anti anxiety meds when they go to the dentist, so I know I’m not alone. My hygienist is wonderful which does help with the anxiety.
Good luck with your MRI! (I’ve had two of those too) Although I’m sure it will be postponed.

One prong of my plague survival plan involved grocery delivery services for fresh items and eventual replenishment of stocks. It now looks as if all future delivery slots are booked solid (probably by weekly subscribers), since nearly EVERYONE in my overeducated area is staying home.

I have numerous fallbacks and significant pantry and body mass stores, but, wow.

Yes, in my area too. I also rely on delivery for my considerable cat food needs (from Chewy) but their orders have gone up so much that they’re now having delivery delays as well. I did venture out yesterday because my cats were forlorn looking into their empty bowls.

If it’s any consolation I see that Madonna has posted ( from her rose-petal bath) that corona virus has made us all “equals in many ways” so there is a good chance someone on NST may bump into her in the supermarket queue while stocking up on toilet paper, or take heart that she shares the pain of a reduced income…it’s tough when you’re a millionaire and the bubble bath runs out.

I also tried Erawan this morning, by Dusita. It starts out as a greenish hay scent. My skin really amped up the vanilla though. I mostly like vanilla when it has a supporting role, but it really takes the lead here. So….its not for me.
But its an interesting scent. If you are looking for a vanilla with an outdoorsy vibe…give it a try!

So busy juggling both of my part time jobs, and keeping the house in order, and taking care of my husband who comes home every evening totally wiped out. Gaahhh. We are doing fine of course. But I am wearing out. Our guest’s flight back to China left at 11:40 PM last night, and goodness willing, he will be okay.

Perfume? Whah? Oh. Yes. A house called Maria Christofills (a jewelry maker it looks like), Fleur09. Big white floral–actually, more muted. If this were one of the Chanel exclusives, I wouldn’t be shocked. But its prominent notes are orange blossom and tuberose, in a Chanel suit. So, elegant and not out of control–for a BWF. Drained my tiny sample.

And thank you thank you thank you to all the front-line healthcare workers and emergency workers. What would we do without you?

I was putting away all the stuff I had packed for India, and since the disinfectant wipes will dry out before I get there next year, I left them for my postal carrier. I have heard that USPS is not doing much to protect their workers. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I don’t need the wipes and maybe they do.

A friend from chorus emailed me about singing and a link to YouTube: Polyphonic overtone singing by Anna-Maria Hefele. I can’t figure out how she does it. It’s interesting in itself but the comments made me laugh out loud.

My feeling about osmanthus seem to vary depending on whether there’s a tea note also. Some kindly NST folks have sent me samples and decants of Osmanthe Yunnan, and I’m not so much of a fan of the smoky tea note. Oddly, I really like the taste of flowering tea flavored with osmanthus. Go figure. (Now that I’m looking at the boxes, I see that the teas I’m thinking of are a green tea and a white tea, and neither are smoked.)

If I remember right, I really liked the Dame Perfumery osmanthus, and the Rogers & Gallet one. And I think I liked the Parfums d’Empire osmanthus as well. I’ll double-check on those sometime. :)

Trying to relax right now. Ever since the shelter in place went into effect, my family went crazy. Worrying about being stopped on the roads with grocery shopping or getting gas. They asked me how I was going to be affected. My place of employment gave us a letter to show if I do. I said that the police can’t stop you from grocery shopping or going to work. I am wearing Coco Mademoiselle today.

Maybe they could start watching the daily 2pm press conferences (known in some quarters as 2pm “Wine with DeWine.”) I find them oddly comforting. They’re very informative and it makes me feel like the state has a pretty good handle on things. We have our own Fauci in the form of Health Director Acton.

    Apres l’ondee

I’ve been making progress in learning to enjoy violets, I think many people of my age range do associate violets with very elderly women. Maybe our kids will associate fruitchoilis with nursing homes, who knows?

I was, as a middle aged woman, offended when I read a comment on Fragrantica that just said “smells like a middle aged woman”. Now, it wasn’t an insult, but it did seem insulting.

    just rambling!

Hi Coin-op, I’ve had the urge this spring to explore violets too when I never cared for them before! I haven’t tried many at all (some more powdery some richer) but so far I like FM Lipstick Rose and Marc Jacobs Violet! Which are your favourites so far?

I haven’t tried MJ violet, but I like L’artisan Drole d’rose! I don’t have a lot of variety, but when I smell Apres L’ondee, I hear the theme to Upstairs Downstairs, I think of an Edwardian lady and I thing “the smell of youth!”

Good morning all, we’re joining many parts of the world in lockdown from tomorrow, and today is my first full day working from home. I’ve never wanted to do that, so I’ll soon find out if my aversion was warranted or not. It’s not looking good, a couple of hours in the lounge yesterday felt like quite enough!
Meanwhile, I don’t have a 20 minute walk to work, and I can take my time with NST.
I’ve decided to keep a lockdown scent diary and see how many perfumes I wear in unusual times. I’m of the view that I want to wear lots of things, so I’ll start light in the morning and change at lunchtime. Today will be Guerlain’s AA Figue-Iris, one of my earlier perfume purchases.

I started reading about mice and rats yesterday (Robin’s loss is my gain, seasonly speaking) and while the Irish Times talks about mice being incontinent and constantly dribbling ( not a plus in my book), the PETA site mentions that rats have a lovely “perfume-like” odour. This being the ‘R’ CP week I wonder what that rat fragrance might be? I wish I had Dark Passage as that seems quite ratty to me. A la nuit? I have that one so will wear that today.

It’s different altogether, they are also not cologne and tend to be longer lasting.
Red Truffle 21 is a savoury fig (with truffle), it’s a fig without coconut which is why I chose it (along with l’AP Caligna) when I was looking for a fig perfume.
Green Orange and Coriander I found also very good (I bought it for my brother).
Gardenia is lovely and fresh as it is a gardenia without tuberose.
Someone mentioned once that Mango Thai Lime is good too but I haven’t tried it.
The three above that I know are all different from each other, but the line has also a lot of citrus which may be quite similar.

Hi everyone, I’m wearing another sample from the stash I’m still trying to alphabetize, Hiram Green Slowdive. Whew, I think I put on too much, and it’ll asphyxiate me. My first impression is CINNAMON. Whew. It’s not listed but it supposedly has a lot of honey and dried fruit and I bet there IS cinnamon in there. Frankly I wish it had less of those notes and more of the nice tuberose. This one is not going onto my to-buy list. At the top of which list right now is Hiram Green Hyde. Omg I love that! I am promising myself a bottle if I manage to lose 2 more pounds on my Noom program. Two more and the total would be 10 which merits a nice reward, right? Of course these last two are quite stubbornly sticking to me like glue. We are now under a shelter in place order or will be as of tonight. One can still go outside and walk but not in groups. I would do so since it’s a nice breezy sunny day but it’s too hot already–86! (=61C). Yuck to that especially given our humidity. I’m just not ready for summer yet. I wish we could send twenty extra degrees to all of you people still suffering through winter.

Wearing Kelly Caleche EDP today, which has mostly worn off by now. I like it more every time I wear it. Easy on my nose.
Wonderfully sunny today, which has helped my mood. Plus, was successful in resolving a work-patient crisis today, so that was a relief, but took a lot of draining calls.
Took a walk to feed the cats, but that was my only outing today. Will do some exercise in a bit since I’m feeling very sedentary.

Guerlain Liu today – I splurged on that bottle last year but hardly ever use it, partially because the cute sprayer that comes separate from the bee bottle doesn’t work well (I”m on my second one already) and when you dab, you dribble this stuff accidentally. But it’s lovely!

I chose not to provide the rehab facility what they requested (my appeal timeline) as that has absolutely nothing to do with us getting reimbursed since the reimbursement was not contingent on the rehab facility getting paid by Medicare. I still say karma is a bitch because had the facility done what it said it would do to dissuade Medicare from dropping coverage, it would not be at the mercy of Medicare’s deliberately confusing rules which it doesn’t even comply with. In any case, the rehab facility accountant contacted me again today asking for a mailing address. I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed that I will see a check in the mail by mid-April. As I mentioned before, I am donating 100% of my share to the nursing home to which we moved mom; they really need the funds now more than ever as it was sadly hard hit by COVID-19 ?.

Carnal Flower, 8 sprays. That beats 4 sprays of Aromatics. You smell absolutely stunning. I remember the first time I tried Carnal Flower, I was completely smitten but was already covered with perfume on every available bit of skin, so she sprayed my hair. Never have I wafted so beautifully.

And good for you for sticking to the purpose and donating the proceeds! I hope you get used to working from home.

I really enjoy not having to commute but I miss the walk and also being with other people. I’m glad work people check in on me and I do the same so this loose connection of checking in helps.

Me, too! I think they realize it is a court order and there is no way out of it. I was surprised way back in July of last year when I disputed a portion of the bill and met with the facility director. At that time we had already lost the 2nd appeal (to the very biased Medicare QIO) and I mentioned to the director that I was going for a 3rd level appeal (administrative judge) and the director was not aware that such a thing existed!

8 sprays of CF???? ? It’s definitely not 28 La Pausa! Now I am rather curious as to what you will be projecting tomorrow!

Yesterday I was “ultra productive” – so much so that I used up all my emotional reserves and by nighttime I crumpled like a leaf, and woke up this morning with a crying-hangover headache.

    Good job teebear…. ?

So today I stayed horizontal and just read all day, finally managed to stretch for half an hour and am calling that “good enough.”

In Zoology Hyrax since no one is around except Mr. Teebear, who wasn’t likely to protest since I’m still a bit of a wreck today. Probably that counts as cheating, but I’m going to take whatever small (smell?) wins I can for today.

Hope everyone else is feeling okay and remember: if you need to take a day off from “being amazing” you don’t have to do all the things!!

Ugh to a crying headache. Sometimes a good cry is what we need though.

my crying jag was on Sunday evening, ugh, very sorry you had it hard last night.

thanks for the reminder that it’s ok to feel all the feels, and it’s more than ok to take a moment (or more) to recover. Hope your headache went away quickly!

Mmm, Shaal Nur. Such a strange scent, so compelling. That astringent citrus blast at the beginning sure weeds out anyone who isn’t in it for the long haul.
Wore Anima Dulcis today for some warm vibes.
The State of Cheese and Beer is now doing “Safer at Home”, a cheerier-sounding (I suppose) version of shelter in place, starting tomorrow. I will get to wear things like Salome when I work from home. Will that affect my mood for the better? I hope so, because two weeks ago I got sick with what had enough coronavirus-like symptoms that I stayed away from everyone, and, well, no woman is an island, not even me. Too mild to test, I was told. I live alone, at least I have a dog, but my brother has an infant and my parents just reached 70, so I have stayed away from family.
Be well, or at least “keep calm and perfume on”.
