Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-March 2020

Posted by Robin on 14 March 2020 352 Comments

Saturday is Pi Day and Sunday is the Ides of March. (And next Saturday is the swapmeet.)

We're marking the weekend with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite fragrance for self-quarantining, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I’m wearing Las Flores by Provision Scents today. I’ve been alternating between this scent and Arielle Shoshana’s Sunday because both are very grounding and help me relax.

We’re still not under quarantine, but I’d be shocked if the school district where I work does not close schools by the end of the week.

I hope everyone is safe, healthy and has a great book to read. Virtual hugs to anyone who is feeling extra anxious.

Hugs to you as well! School closures have already been announced here. My teacher friends are concerned about how to transfer to online and when/if they may reopen.

Sunday is so perfect for grounding. Enjoy your day.
I hope we all have a quiet restful weekend.
I am considering buying a Kindle finally and no longer using my iPad. It bothers my eyes, which are dry but the blue screen is said to be great for this. Do you have any experience with Kindles?

I’m not the one you asked, but as much as I love books, I also love my Kindle (Paperwhite version). I can search the book for specific text, look up words, change the lighting, carry multiple “books” with me and never bother someone if I can’t sleep and want to read. Easy on the eyes because it’s front lit.

Before I collected perfume, I had a little collection of e-readers. Our house is rather dark, so I prefer the e-readers that light up. The black-and-white “e-Ink” e-readers are supposed to be better for your eyes than tablets and such with backlit screens. I find the Kindle Paperwhite easier to read than a Kindle Fire. And the Nook with Glow-light works well for me. There’s less glare from the screens of that kind of e-reader. The Kobo Glo is supposed to be nice. Someday I’ll take a look at one of those.

The e-books that are most often offered free from the various e-bookstores are straight romances. Every so often there will be a cozy mystery for free. I have e-books on a very wide range of subjects, some about niche interests, some with much more of a broad appeal.

I could go on (and on), but I wasn’t the person you asked, either. Hope you get an e-reader you like. :)

Thank you so much Neyronrose. This is all so helpful and wonderful information.
I am going to order the Paperwhite. Thank you again. I had heard that some of the e-readers have really small screens, similar to phone size.

            You’re very welcome. :)

If you have eye trouble, you definitely don’t want to get a “Mini”-sized e-reader!

You can e-mail me at neyronrose at gmail dot com once you get your Paperwhite all set up, and we could discuss what Kindle books I could lend to you. :) I have the Perfume Guides and a few other Kindle books about perfume, and, as I said, books on quite the range of other topics. (lol) If you like cozy mysteries, you’d be set for a while. This goes for others who have Kindles, too. :)

Also chiming in: love my Koro Aura 2. It’s an older model but charge lasts forever, less eye fatigue than with a tablet etc.

The other reason Kobo eReaders may be worth looking into – they work seamlessly with e-lending libraries.

FREE. BOOKS. If your local library has e-lending through Overdrive you’ll find it very easy. You can return books early, change the lending period, place holds… It’s amazing.

Thank you teebear! I was very tempted to go with that model but was trying to be cost conscious, if it isn’t helpful enough I will
exchange. The real issue is that I need drops at night to help w/dryness and then the eyes burn even if I wait 20 minutes afterwards to apply. I will change the timing but still need the e reader so I don’t continue to irritate unknowingly.
Overdrive is a great idea too. Thanks!!

Yesterday’s sotd was Petit Matin. It started out as a nice citrus-y smell then developed a sweeter note as the time wore on. Very nice, and a good substitute for what i originally wanted to wear for the CP.

I wish for you all to be safe and healthy. Please don’t let the stress/anxiety get to you too much.

I’m in Tam Dao, which is my keep calm and carry on fragrance.
The governor called off schools last night starting this Wednesday through at least April 6. Why Wednesday? My daughter is not at risk Monday or Tuesday, but would be on Wednesday…?? It doesn’t make sense to me, but what do I know. I do know that it affects almost 1 million kids across the state and I’m lucky that I took vacation time across these few weeks months ago because both my daughters have different spring breaks. My daughter is also old enough to stay home alone. I feel for families that are probably scrambling to find childcare or use vacation time that they may not have, or had allotted for a real vacation.
Today is the first Saturday I’ve had off in 3 weeks because work has been so busy that I’ve been putting in many hours of overtime. Now I will enjoy some (well deserved imo) time off with my family this weekend.? I was so looking forward to sleeping in that when my alarm went off at 5:30 this morning I woke up panicked and then realized that I was the dummy that set it last night because it has been such a routine. It was so nice to shut it off and go back to sleep.?

Such a crazy week here in Los Angeles. I am currently working at an organization that provides services to the underserved across Los Angeles County and that means services to front line employees. It’s way better and infinitely more satisfying than a 4-5 hour commute on the 405 but it is intense and there is no remote.
And, I am eternally grateful my mom and dad are not alive for this, they would be so confused and frightened by not having family members visit. That hurts my heart for families with elderly.
I think post shower I will go with Satori, although I might not achieve satori! Ever!
Had foot X-ray, not quite healed yet, another two weeks of boot wearing.
Books..lots on kindle, two in car for commute.
Virtual hugs to this caring community.

Just talked to my mom on the phone at the nursing home and she is sad and scared. I want her to turn off the tv because she hears something and gets it confused and exaggerated. However, the tv will be her only stimulation while no one is visiting.

I was talking to my sister yesterday, and we were thinking the same thing. Our folks would have had a difficult time with this. I inquired if she was taking her vitamin C, D and her l-lysine to boost her immune system, and she laughed, because it’s just what our mom would have said.

Now dad, if he’d seen the state of the pillaged grocery stores, would have said, “Well, isn’t this the damndest thing.” ?

I thank God everyday that my mom was a germaphobe and I have enough hand sanitizers, disinfecting wipes, alcohol pads (in desperation) and I’ve been buying a box here and there of individually packaged Purell wipes. That said, I’ve also remarked to my fellow travelers that at some level, it was good that my mom is not around to experience this as she would go out of her mind with anxiety and nag me not to commute in to work. My dad, on the other hand, would take things in stride because he has a habit of stocking up on TP – we usually have 2 of the large Costco packs on hand and if we open one of them, a third one would already be in the house within two weeks.

Good news amidst all the anxiety and a shout out to Intrepid Travel for doing the right thing. After many sleepless nights this week about our upcoming Morocco trip ( I felt that if there weren’t government or WHO travel alerts, we would travel as we truly didn’t want to lose the money and previous rules were that one forfeited everything if cancelling within 21 days), the tour company cancelled all their trips for the sake of the health of their employees and customers. We will receive vouchers to be used at a future date. I hope more companies start doing that in these stressful times.

My daughter’s school is closed as of Monday and I will be working remote. I went to Target on Thursday and there was no TP so I bought brownies instead which seemed like the logical thing to do.

You’ve got your priorities right! Brownies should always be at the top of the list. I stopped at a Walmart this morning and they are completely sold out of gallon jugs of water. The only thing left was distilled, which maybe people don’t know is perfectly fine to drink…?

I’m an introvert and thought I would flourish with social distancing. And in some ways, things have gone well this past week, but I have been feeling a little restless. I think it’s more the sameness of the surroundings that is getting to me, rather than the lack of people.

My neighbor and I weren’t close, but she sent me a message with “help” in the subject line last June. I got back with her 3 times but never figured out what she needed. Hello everyone!
The situation is getting pretty serious here. Schools, universities and other public places will be closed for the next 2 weeks. Many companies are sending their employees to work from home to reduce the risk of being infected.
I am safe for now, although I’m still working in the lab for the time being. It’s scary but I hope we’ll get through it.

It’s snowing! In Portland, in mid-March! It won’t stick, it’s already melting a bit, but I was surprised this morning when I got up. I looked out the window and thought, “Darn, that bush has developed some kind of white mildew.” Then I put on my glasses :-)

The libraries, community centers (where my gym is), chorus rehearsals, and humane society are all closed. I am thankful for e-books and for the fact that I have put off a number of house projects that now I have no excuse for not finishing. In the spirit of “May you live in interesting times,” I am wearing the most interesting celebuscent I own, Stash.

Micallef Gaiac. My top anti-anxiety fragrance. Going to work out at home and clean house. Nowhere to go right now – but will walk later.

My sons bought some groceries (which was super nice) but they’re kind of random and I generally like to cook with a plan. Need to figure out some dinners.

It’s a full weekend off for me. Normally, if I have a Saturday off, I take my daughter to the Big Sephora, which is her version of Disneyland. I had to tell her we couldn’t go because she wouldn’t be allowed to use the testers and I didn’t trust her to stick to that rule. We did go to best buy to see about fixing her computer, but no luck.
My Sotd is Korres Lilac Iris Powder edt and matching lotion. This is a very light perfume, but pretty. Better suited for warmer weather. I’m about to start some house cleaning and that’s about it.

Not quite feeling it in Hiram Green’s Slowdive. I ordered a bunch of his samples a while ago, and after testing all of them the only one I would want a bottle of, which fortunately I already have is Moon Bloom.
I love the opening of Dilettante, and I guess it’s my second favourite, the far dry down however is not quite to my liking.

Went for a nice long walk and did some cleaning in my house. I might as well make good use of this enforced seclusion. I hope people on here will use perfume as a distraction from stress. Sending calm and good smells to everyone who needs either of those.

I’m assuming you’re not going to France then. I read today that the French government has ordered all non essential businesses to close for the time being. We’re likely going to cancel our trip to France in May. I doubt things are going to get much better by then. Is the Netherlands under similar restrictions at the moment?

Not quite as severe, but I’m assuming all schools will have to close down, next week. There is a huge scientific debate about how children “work” in this epidemic. Scientists know for sure that with influenza epidemics they often work as vectors, not getting sick themselves but transmitting the virus to others. The thing is, the experts can’t be sure about a lot of things concerning this virus right now, and people want clear answers that they can’t give. So those in charge make the best decisions they can given what they know and may have to alter those decisions at a later date.
I realised Friday evening that although my employer does not forbid non-essential travel to foreign countries our PM basically stated that health care professionals would not be allowed to travel abroad. So I’m not. I will see. I can’t visit my parents, or rather I’d rather not. Their part of the country is but little affected and I live in the most severely hit province. I just make regular phone calls and hope for the best.

It’s interesting to witness the decision making process and the confusion that continues to manifest itself even as new guidelines are being issued on an almost daily basis. I’m a pediatrician (in an office setting) and we’re trying to grapple with how to best serve our patients while managing the underlying anxiety that dominates in our communities right now.
There are more questions than answers at this time but I’m sure we’ll make some progress soon.
Best to you and your family!

Funny story: on Friday, the gov of Pennsylvania asked, but did not order, all non-essential businesses & places open to the public to close for 2 weeks. Local gardens closed, library closed, YMCA closed, etc. King of Prussia mall said it wasn’t clear what was non-essential so they were staying open.

Apparently the next day someone explained to them, because on Saturday they announced they would close.

When in doubt: don’t use common sense. There have been people celebrating their last evening in pubs as they are closing down. Honestly, some people seem to have no concept of crowding.

Also for those running out of toiletpaper this might help:

I got an e-mail from Lush saying that they were closing their US and Canada stores temporarily, but they’d still be selling soap online, as soap is a useful product under the circumstances. (paraphrasing)

I was sad about the library closing for a couple of weeks, but the one near me is very, very busy, so perhaps that’s better for folks’ health. And it’s pretty this time of year at Longwood Gardens, but that’s also a place that gets very crowded at times.

I’d planted a lot of crocus on the hillside in front of the house a couple of years ago, and those are making little masses of color. The early daffodils that are in sunny places are starting to bloom, and there should be tulips and hyacinths blooming on the hillside and by the porch soon.

I wish Longwood had found a way to keep the outside open — people do need to get out and walk! — but I understand why it’s the right choice.

We had tons of crocuses but the squirrels have really done a number on them :-)

Wearing Chergui as it is a nice feel-good scent. It is definitely strange to go to the grocery store and see more than the usual number of people there, all stocking up on everything they feel they will need for a couple of weeks in the event that some of those items are not available in the days coming up.

Stay well and stay safe, everyone.

I was volunteering at the library in my Jil Sander Sun, I will use it quite a bit when summer comes as it deserves better than just the library, it’s discreet and linear but not dull. Had to wash my hands 12 times and the library soap is not moisturizing. This evening I am wearing Caron Farnesiana, I missed it so much and found it again when I reorganized the perfume cabinet a few weeks ago. Must wear more Caron perfumes, the house has been in decline but the five I have I absolutely adore, especially my gigantic bottle of vintage Bellodgia.

I had to wait a long time for it :) a detail but it might be of interest to you, go for the ones labelled Au Bellodgia, these are the true vintage ones and their scent is intact after all these years. If you are in Europe, I’d be happy to send you a decant.

Same here, I work with students all day so I wash my hands over and over. I’ve started working coconut oil into my hands (and feet) at bedtime. Lotion during the day helps, but it’s not enough.

Love your Caron scents. They are precious, Bellodgia is a real jewel.

Maybe I should do the same, I wonder if you wear socks after applying the oil or iif the massaging enough to avoid stickiness. So glad you are a Caron fan too.

Oh, it’s a Caron I have, one vintage in the ‘cushion’ bottle with a distinctive blue top and a newer one rectangular one in a white and gold box, perhaps it’s the one you mean? They smell identical to my nose, but then Aimez-Moi is a newer scent relatively so less likely to suffer from reformulation, I love its pastis/violetty note. The scents which suffered most are the classics. Victoria’s great article on Caron on her blog Bois de Jasmin might be of interest to you.

After Koyel’s comments of the lovely scents wafting her way through the open window, I decided to wear SSS Jour Ensolleille, since it reminds me so much of Nor Cal. I love this scent so much, and it makes me happy it’s back.

Spent the early morning on a Zoom call – preparing for a class I’m in to move to online (I lead a small subgroup of class members). I went ahead and paid for the monthly account to add flexibility. Hoping to test it out later today with my sisters.

SotD = l’air du desert marocain

laddm is like a vacation for my nose and brain, very soothing and uplifting.

Gray skies, no rain yet. Staying in today, putting together an IKEA Hemnes chest of drawers for my bedroom. Until recently I had only a bed and a night table. But I have a very large closet with many shelves so it was ok.

After 7 years in this house it is time to pretend I’m grown up and make some furniture choices. The new chest has a white finish, very pretty, but I’m wondering if it will stay white as time goes on.

As I read pictorial assembly instructions and turn screws I wonder — is someone else somewhere in the world is doing the same with their new Hemnes? It’s a nice feeling.

Hope everyone has a moment of niceness today.

    Stay calm and perfume on!

I’m trying out the new Hermes L’Ombre. It’s not remarkable, but at least I’m not getting a lot of marine notes, which bugged me in Bleue.

Need to get out and walk the dog today. Went to Whole Foods earlier, and they were fairly well stocked. Everyone seemed to be calm and collected, which was a relief.

Take care everyone, and stay safe and serene this weekend!

I’m wearing Amouage Sunshine Woman, which is the happiest scent I could think of :)

Here in Toronto we aren’t on official quarantine yet but things are getting real. All public schools are closed until Easter, and all City programs and facilities are closed (except for essential services). All non essential travel has been discouraged as has any large gatherings (sports, theatres, museums, etc.)
I’m actually a professional opera singer, so not being able to rehearse, perform or teach regular music lessons is a pretty big hit :(
However, I know it could be a lot worse, and I’m incredibly grateful for the dedication and sacrifice of health care professionals and volunteers here and in countries all over the world, Thank you!

Things are getting real here as well. No school for anyone, cases multiplying. A lot of fear in the air. I know someone who runs an order that has a huge nursing home facility, and he says that the 2,000 plus who make it their home are very frightened.

Did a grocery run for my bestie, who’s doing her recommended self-isolation after she returned from Australia Thursday, and then we had tea at our mandated 2m distance.

Wanted to try something lavender when I got home, so I just popped on Guerlain Mon Guerlain from a tester included with some decants I got recently.

I love lavender and I love vanilla, and I won’t lie, I love fabric softener now and then, but… On my clothes. This feels like I poured it over my head instead.

They should have named this Fille D’assouplissant as a play on words. (Dryer sheet is “feuille d’assouplissant” on French).

I love Mon Guerlain and I don’t get the feuille d’assouplissant association at all, but I love your pun!
The only iteration of the Mon Guerlain family I do not get on with is the Rose one.

Oh, I definitely sabotaged myself by having vanilla scented laundry sheets currently!

Mr. Teebear and I have two longhaired cats – one black, and one white. This was definitely not on purpose ? The heart loves rescues where it will, and then you need antistatic treatment on your laundry for all eternity.

But Snuggle reformulated the Cuddle Up Fresh scent I used to love, and so the vanilla sheets are new to me and a very distinct scent impression still!

Made it to Twisted Lily today; so sad this really amazing niche fragrance store is closing :(

Somehow managed to control myself and just pick up a 15ml Fig Tea and CdG Lily which we all know my husband will be very happy about.

Biked down from the UWS and enjoyed being out of the house and on a bike in what was a gorgeous day.

Wearing a mix of stuff from sampling but mainly smell a baby powder scent that I will be scrubbing off as soon as I get home.

Today I took my beloved 8 year old mixed breed cat Zoe to the veterinarian for the third time in four days all because of something that weren’t awry when she received a distemper vaccine booster shot. When she was home, she was limping and not putting any pressure on the opposite arm she got the shot in. She had a fever of 104.1 the next day.l so we brought her back. We thought there was some sort of fracture on her paw or arm if they had taken out of her carrier too forcefully. I don’t think it had to do with the vaccine and she was fine under my watch. We brought her again today where another doctor felt that there was some pain:or tension in her left arm and gave her some pills to take home and I’m happy to report she’s walking okay and her temperature is down to 103.4. Cats have a slightly higher normal temperature than humans. Now I’m off to Sephora to return something that didn’t work out and browse!

SotD is Comme des Garçons Series 10: Clash EDP Radish Vetiver which I love because it felt crisp and fresh today when I needed a pick-me-up!

Went out yesterday to the grocery store. People here in my conservative area are in denial, there was someone carrying on loudly looking at the depleted milk cooler, “I am a nurse, and this is so overblown. There is nothing to it.” I did not say to her, “If you are really a nurse, you should know better than that.” I just moved away. Ugh. Now I am working from home all week and not going out. This morning , commando, but after some intense house cleaning I will take a shower and the probably try Casablanca again. Start seeds for the garden, sort my knitting stash, try to find the hard copy of “The Handmaid’s Tale” which is somewhere in my sadly disarrayed bookshelves….So many things to do.

It is pretty! I greatly appreciate the sample you sent me. :-) I compare all of these floral incense perfumes to Mohur Extrait, and this one comes up to the mark. The opening is amazing and it wears well and long. I think I prefer Mohur’s long dry down, but Casablanca goes on longer on me than Mohur. I am impressed. I have already ordered a sample of the other one, LAV, which is compared to Avignon (which doesn’t do it for me) and La Liturgie des Heures (which I love but have not bought more of for some reason). Perfumes are a good distraction during these staycation times. Stay well.

The Mohur extrait has a gorgeous drydown. Casablanca is very tenacious in skin and even more on clothes. A full bottle will last forever.
I am also an incense lover. Earlier today I sprayed on the last drops of a sample of Serge Lutens L’Orpheline. Such a nice creamy, light powdery incense. The drydown is still going strong after 6 hours. Very pretty and comfy. If you have not tried it yet I highly recommend it.
I agree that perfumes are a good distraction and therapy right now. Be well!!

Knowing, Aromatics Elixir, and Ubar have been in heavy rotation these days. While they haven’t been my comfort scents in the past, I am finding their earthy patchouli-ness grounding.

My older son is coming home tomorrow night, bringing a friend from college who is from Beijing. He has been so unsure of what to do. Going home is so complicated for him, health-wise and visa-wise. If he flew back to China, it is unclear when he could return, which could entail not being able to return to the US for college for years. It is tough on his family that he is not going to go home now. I hope that we can be a good family for him, for the duration. Meanwhile, we are stocking the larder to reduce the amount of shopping we will need to do over the coming weeks. I just got an annoying text from a family member who generally feels superior (she has on more than one occasion referred to herself, without irony, as a prophet in the wilderness). The text is a photo of two bags of pistachios—her “hoarding” as she called it. Good on ya. And my mom told me yesterday that she was refusing to stock up on anything because she and her husband like to eat fresh fish—and yes, she is an avid consumer of news.???I guess fresh fish is the exception to social distancing?

A prophet in the wilderness? Lol, who talks like that?! It’s really good of you to take the friend in. I did what I could to stock up on friday, but other bills must be paid this month and the next..

That’s great of you to take in that student! Yes, it would likely be hard for him to come back. A co-worker’s wife went to China to visit relatives in January… she has been stuck there since then. So my co-worker has been doing single-parenting ever since. I’m sure it is scary for his young son, not knowing when mom will return. Poor kid.

I’m sure that you will be a good family for him.? I bet just having somewhere to go will come as a relief to him and his family.

Like everyone else, just bumping along with this coronavirus thing. We’ve got plenty of groceries (and TP) for a couple of weeks. Introvert me is fine with staying home; extrovert husband… not so much. He’s out teaching at the fire department academy this weekend. And I do mean ‘out’ as in ‘outside in the rain’… he got home drenched last night. And he has a cough. Well we all know who the risk factor is in this house (rolling my eyes here).

My husband’s employer has sent everyone home to work from home. Mine, meanwhile, sent out an email saying that since no employees have been diagnosed with covid-19, it is business as usual. What?? So the cunning plan is to wait until we’ve had definite workplace exposure until they decide it’s time to prevent workplace exposure? Uh…. I’m just ignoring them, and working from home, as are many of my co-workers. The local schools are all closing starting next week so co-workers with school age kids have to stay home anyway. Yeesh.

Meanwhile I’m currently testing EL Cinnabar vs Papillon Bengale Rouge. Cinnabar is winning my vote :)

This virus is a perfect excuse for us introverted hermits to stay home. I am not bothered (for now).

I’m wearing Passage D’Enfer and feeling pretty zen today. Went to the gym…yep, still going, just cleaning the machines thoroughly. The employees there are cleaning constantly, and with the drop in attendance, I’m thinking the place is actually safer than it was a couple of weeks ago. Now if they run out of cleaning supplies, I’ll have to rethink it.
I can hear my mom telling me to not borrow trouble.

    My mantras:
    I am healthy.
    I am fit.
    I am housed.
    I have a stocked pantry.
    I have a stocked freezer.
    We will get through this.
    ????????

Woke up (relatively) early this Sunday morning so decided to have some coffee then hit the laundry room. Four loads, which included flannel sheets, duvet cover, towels. My husband is just now heading down to do some clothes. Reorganized the closet where we keep linens…it was out of control…and our kitchen drawer with napkins and dish towels And cleaned up my bedside table, which was badly cluttered. Our tiny place needs a thorough purging and reorg. Today wasn’t even tip of the iceberg…

Finally sprayed on LADDM. So so good.

Woke up at 4 am this morning with George Thorogood in my head, “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer.” Thinking that would probably not be a very wise breakfast, I switched my attention to my new bottle of Ginger Piccante, which is really nice. Not as gingery as Origins Ginger Essence, but ginger and pepper up front. Oddly I get the impression of a “sparkly” fragrance. Terrible longevity on me, though, about 3 hours. Good thing it comes in that big bottle. I finally got George out of my head by playing some KD Lang, I find her voice so soothing. On the toilet paper issue, I came back from a trip where I used a bidet and bought a bidet toilet seat. It’s wonderful and now I mostly use TP to blot makeup and the drips from my eyedrops.

I have a bidet hand held washer – super easy to install and might be cheaper then the seat!

I’m in SJP Lovely and well, it’s just lovely.? I ordered a small decant from STC during their sale because I’ve never tried it and have heard good things. It does smell a lot like the original NR for her, I’ll have to try them side by side. Even got a “what perfume are you wearing?” from my husband, which is always a good sign.
I was trying to get some school work done earlier and had to tell my giggling girls to pipe down so I could think straight. This self isolating should be interesting with all of us home this week.
