Monday scent of the day 2/17

Posted by Robin on 17 February 2020 235 Comments

It's Monday and President's Day plus Random Acts of Kindness Day. I am terribly late with the poll, sorry! What fragrance are you wearing?

We have just returned from vacation. After a long hot shower, I will be back with my scent of the day. I am thinking Aftelier Candide?

Reminder: on 2/21, wear a fragrance by Parfum d'Empire, Parfums DelRae, Penhaligon's, Pacifica or Parfumerie Generale, if you have one. (Yes, we already did a community project for Parfums de Nicolaï). Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter P.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I should have worn a DelRae or a PG but had forgotten about this weeks CP. My SOTD is Ninfeo Mio, which is my best friend when I’m feeling slightly out of sorts. Nothing major just some bug trying to get the better of me.

      I hope the bug loses!

Btw i was in Antwerp last weekend and I tried the Akro line (at Necessities) you recommend a while ago.
Its very interesting! I wish this brand offered a sample set….

Dark and Smoke seemed the most wearable to me.
The other addictions will probably raise eyebrows if you wear them to work ? haha.

The Akro website offers a sample set. What did you make of the rose?

I had a hard time detecting the rose ?. I got mostly saffron and cumin. But did not try it on my skin…

The rose was quite prominent to my nose, I didn’t test on skin either. It reminded me a little of Une Rose Poivrée by TDC.

I liked the Smoke a lot as well, but I already own quite a few very smoky perfumes so in the end I decided that I “needed” Dark more.

…and thanks for pointing out the sample set! I may order one. My husband was also quite charmed by this brand.

I thought that I saw one on Luckyscent’s website as well – I think it jumped in & out of my cart a few times?. Once I use up a few decants I want to test this line. I love Oliver Cresp.

Sampling Venetian Belladonna from Parfums Quartana which is nice enough but not something I need a bottle of.

I have, with the purchase of a tester of Golden Wood from Barney’s, pretty much run out of room for new bottles. I might be able to fit in a couple of travel sprays but I think I have basically hit my limit at 150 bottles and zillions of samples

I’m in Eau des Merveilles, hoping it will cheer me up. Today’s my day off after a busy work weekend and I should be in a good mood but I’m not. Feeling quite cranky.? I think this state of eternal gray is finally getting the best of me. I suppose a steady diet of The Smiths and Radiohead isn’t helping the situation, lol. Must find something happy to listen to today.

    Shalimar

NYers, there is a Alexander McQueen fashion exhibit going on at the Historical Society. Today is the last day and I went yesterday. For those who are into fashion. The collection is being auctioned off after today. Worth a visit if you admire his work. I find it fierce & sexy. Just like when I wear Shalimar ;)

We ran out of comments, but I find the body creme great! It’s pretty thick, nicely scented and is really good for layering! It can also be a stand-in fragrance for when you may want less Shalimar (if there is ever such a thing).

I bet the creme and powder would be great combo at bedtime after a bath or shower! I will have to look into the powder.

My friend who is a bit bold when right up to Ruti Danan and asked her about these pieces. She was off to the side with the folks from the museum, and as soon as we approached her she was so warm and welcoming she gave us her only little private tour of the pieces and talked about her time with McQueen. This chance encounters only happen in NYC ;)

Sorta your twin today in current Shalimar edt (I need to get smart on Shalimar Cologne – if fragrancenet is to be believed, there is a Cologne edc and a Cologne edt?). I don’t feel sexy, but I certainly do feel fierce (due to being tired and cross…).

Well, I was prepared to be all snobbish and dismissive of it because it isn’t vintage… but you know, after wearing it a couple of times I’ve decided that it may be just the thing for work wear. I’m considering a full bottle purchase. Would love to try the Cologne for comparison, but don’t think anyone carries it locally.

Yes, there are Shalimar Cologne, an eau de toilette created in 2015 by Thierry Wasser, and Shalimar eau de cologne, which you can often find in stores like CVS. There are good descriptions of both on Fragrantica. The eau de cologne was the first Shalimar I really liked, at the start of my perfume journey!

I wore Un jardin apres la mousson today!

I just discovered that the very good WW2 book I read last autumn is translated.
No affiliation, but it left me speechless (and I am not easily impressed), so I highly recommend it. It is so important to know these tales in these times when (ultra)right wing is roaring its super ugly head again.
The english title is The High Nest or The Sisters of Auschwitz, by Roxane van Iperen.
Dont know about other languages sorry!

And I saw the Van Eyck exhibition in Ghent last friday..it was beautiful! If you are interested in art from him and his contemporaries and you happen to be in/near Belgium this spring, you need to see it. It was quite crowded but still worth it! (You need to buy tickets in advance)

I am sure you will love it!

The only real downside is the audiotour system.
It demands you keep the audiodevice near a transmitter thats hanging on the wall. And then you hear a bleep.
Folks have to bleep for Every. Bloody. PaintingTheyHaveStoryfor.

So you hear bleep bleep bleep around you all the time, its just an aweful solution. ? And I know less intrusive audio tour systems exist.
(Cant tell you if the audio tour was any good, i am one of those people who prefer walking around an exhibition without one)

When I tried it at first i found the fruity note (melon?) a bit off putting. But i kept trying it. especially on spring and summer days I craved that ginger cardemom combo, and warmed up to it.

Welcome back from vacation, Robin, I am home as well and already missing my carefree vacation. Plus I spent last night at the emergency room (an eye thing that seems to be okay, but omg, the emergency room ANY time, but especially Sunday night before a holiday? just kill me now).

I can finally do justice to an alphabet house poll – I still have decants/samples of early Parfumerie Generales (now called Pierre Guillaume) that I love (and a bottle of Pierre’s Myrrhiad) as well as a bottle of Parfums Delrae Panache, a bit of Bois de Paradis and a decant of Providence Perfume’s Tabac Citron. Now my dilemma is which to wear when…today I’m going with PG Musc Maori.

No sprayed fragrance yet. Still enjoying a bit of the cherry blossom shower gel I used and thankful to have my shower/tub back. Also enjoying a tobacco scented candle. I actually don’t get that much tobacco from it…more tea and leather.

Had a nice dinner with a friend last night. But I did laugh that the somewhat Victorian decor (complete with teddy bears perched on swings and hearts hanging from the ceilings) was combined with ‘80s rock like Bon Jovi and Guns N Roses…. I had a chicken/kale ravioli made from rice flour that was delicious. If they hadn’t indicated gluten free, I would never have known. Perfect chewiness in a vodka sauce.

Hope all those getting a day off have a relaxing or adventurous day..whichever provides the most pleasure.

I’m thinking of going for a rose week, so I’m wearing Perles de Lalique. I am almost to the end of my mini, so I need to decide if it is worth a full bottle. I wear it relatively rarely.

At least three years, I think the mini was .17 oz. This combination of patchouli and rose is a favorite, but it is available in many other iterations. I wore Voleur de Roses on Saturday, very much in the same vein as Perles de Lalique. However, I have a large bottle of Voleur de Roses, I like it more, and it lasts longer on my skin.

I was looking at some of my large(15ml) recants and pulled out Givenchy III, the original version. The debate is still raging but different. I tried Hedonist Rose a while back and dabbed the last little bit on. It’s okay and still haven’t tried Hedonist Cassis. It’s still either the Hedonist travel set or Coco Mademoiselle travel set.

Fwiw I’ve met Viktoria Minya personally and she is just the loveliest.

She runs ateliers from her apartment in Paris to educate people about perfume blending, and that’s how I wound up with my first customized perfume last year.

So go with your nose for sure, but if you need something to tip you one way or the other, her operation is definitely small and personal.

I’m in tiny spritzes of Jardin Sur le Nile because I was looking for something that smells like (or at least would blend well with) the body lotion I used today. It (the body lotion) is an old sample size of Lancome Hydra Fraichelle and I don’t know what notes I’m smelling in it, but they’re very fresh and green and light, whatever they are.

I’m currently smelling of “all things chypre” since I made decants for my sister this morning to send off. I tried to control myself (so I don’t overwhelm her); I am sending Madam Jolie, Perles de Lalique, Knowing, Azuree, Cabochard and Une Rose Chypree. Also in the non-chypre category, going to her is a decant of La Pausa and Bois de Violette.

    Happy Monday everyone!

I think she will enjoy them. It’s funny that we like many of the same notes. But she really disliked carrot seed oil; I thought she would have loved it (like me!). Earlier in the week we had the discussion of cilantro – yes or no? I’m in the ‘yes’ group, she’s definitely in the ‘no’ group. Maybe that was the difference?

Lots of oakmoss in them! When you spray alot of the same types of fragrances in the same day and small space, you start to really recognize certain notes! I used Fragrantica as a guide; it was really helpful.

It may be FB worthy for me. I don’t have much to test with, so I’m not quite sure.
I was able to visit the perfume museum too! I was there just over a year ago. So much to smell, I was a little overwhelmed and excited. The deconstructed rose exhibit was truly enlightening. I remember the benzoin! It immediately reminded me of Tauer When We Cuddle.

Random acts of kindness day, huh? Well my employer doesn’t give today as a holiday, so that’s not so kind, but the commute traffic was really light, so I’ll take that.

So the parking garage at work (thousands of spots) now has gates which you open with an app on your phone. Except it doesn’t exactly work well, so they have hired two people to stand out there in the chill to take your phone from you and walk it over to the sensor so that the gate opens. Yeah this is progress. I can’t imagine what the line is like at 8:45 am. It makes me even happier that I work from home most days.

SOTD is Yosh Koenig. Foresty leather. The hand wants what it wants.

Under the weather today. ? Some nausea, and Pepto-Bismol for breakfast. I finally felt able to have some soup a little earlier on in the afternoon. Not exactly a stellar Monday.

SOTD = TF Noir de Noir, from the sample stash. I always think of KellyC whenever I see or hear this one being mentioned. It even comes in a cute little travel spray now. I should give the current stuff a sniff and see how it compares to my sample. At least I smell good today…

I’m wearing Hiram Green Arbole Arbole, and even though I didn’t like it initially I’ve become obsessed by it after someone gave me a bottle. I’m in love with Slowdive as well, now. After years of feeling jaded about modern perfumes and buying mostly vintage, it’s really nice to feel new love again.

    It’s a P perfume so kinda sorta participating ??‍♀️

Spicy floral leather with citrus on top and a patchy vetiver drydown. Nice!

I tried monkfruit sweetener for the very first time today and Inwas quite surprised that it tastes just like sugar! It’s a newish sweetener for those who are avoiding sugar. I’m not but since I got a pack from a friend for Christmas, I thought I should try it on coffee. I also got a jar of cardamom powder from Whole Foods. Whoa! I think I went overboard as it was too spicy floral soapy. Next time, a pinch will do!

I also found monkfruit to be the best tasting not-sugar, though I’ve gotten used to not sweetening anything so don’t really use it much.

Just about the only thing I sweeten with sugar is coffee. Sometimes, I add honey to waffles or pancakes. I don’t drink diet anything and the last low sugar thing I bought – oatmeal – turned out to have either stevia or sucralose or something like that and yuck. I left the remaining 2 cups for someone else to enjoy.

I also found out thru experience that ground cardamom packs a punch. I only use a little bit in the spice blend for my chili. The bottle I have is still really fragrant, and I’ve had it for a few years now.

I’m kind of late reading posts today. Welcome home, Robin! It seems as if a lot of folks here are under the weather right now. I’m so sorry to hear that and wish everyone well. I did some cleaning today and was rewarded by finding two Micallef samples in a small dish in my laundry room. Go figure. After cleaning, I had a late afternoon shower and sprayed on some Akowa and went out for a nice walk. Ew, I thought, what is this? Pineapple? Lotus? Something sweet, strange, and fruity. Not good. Then during my entire walk I had a pleasant sense of floral beauty and well-being. This is a very strange animal. I can’t tell if I love it or hate it. To be continued….

Love the cabbage picture. It’s such a gorgeous vegetable. I pulled out a showstopper for my day off work, Parfums Delrae Bois de Paradis. I’m so glad I bought a bottle right before they announced the company was calling it quits.

I spent the first half of the day finishing The Goldfinch. I have such a hard time when a really good book is over. I cried multiple times in the last 75 pages. I don’t think I’ll watch the movie because I don’t want it to spoil how much I love the book. I didn’t think it could top how I feel about The Secret History, but it’s definitely given it a run for its money.

Spending the afternoon watching Marriage Story until my boyfriend’s home from work.

As far as Marriage Story, I liked it quite a bit but didn’t love it. I’d say it’s worth a watch if you like relationship dramas. It did make me both cringe and cry.

Pretty sure I have plenty to participate in the project this week. Today, however, I’m in Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114. First time trying it and honestly loved it. I may wear it again tomorrow. Really good stuff.

One of my best friend is flying with her fiancé on Wednesday night to visit. We have beach plans, going to a Lakers game, some shopping and eating. Will be a great time! We are on a 4/10 schedule so I have every Friday off anyway, but will take Thursday too. Can’t wait!
