Tuesday scent of the day 2/11

Posted by Robin on 11 February 2020 289 Comments

Tuesday and Inventor's Day! (Plus, if you live in New Mexico, Extraterrestrial Culture Day.) What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: still on vacation, (still behind on reading comments), still in Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess. Tea at the moment is Numi Chinese Breakfast.

Reminder: 2/14 we're celebrating Valentine's Day. Wear the perfume you are most smitten with at the moment, or, wear a perfume given to you by a significant other.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Sultan’s Garden Tea Pot ("This giftable and eye-catching range is a collaboration with designer Sam de Teran and features vibrant paradisal gardens with illustrations of gazelles, lions and monkeys playing beneath palms and cypress trees. They're inspired by geometric prints and patterns of early near-Eastern ceramic artwork.") is £75 at John Lewis.

I’m copying Perfumelover67 and my SOTD is Paris YSL. It is forever gorgeous to me. I put on some from a tiny, and very cute mini with, I think, fleur de Parfum.

Tea is Wedding Impérial by MF.

Today I got my order from Lush which contained two body sprays, Jungle and Tramp. My first perfume purchase in months. So of course I have to wear both this week!
Tramp today. For those who are not familiar with this scent, it is basically a lot of patchouli and oakmoss. It is a very raw scent, almost like a blend of essential oils. Very natural and forest-y. I still prefer it as a shower gel, but a body spray is nice too.

I don’t believe Tramp was available at the 34th Street store when I fell in love with Turmeric Latte. That said, there was a tramp in the flesh in store.

I’m in Eau Duelle, which I am definitely smitten with at the moment. I’ll see how I feel when my decant is gone.
Yesterday was day 30 of my Whole30 challenge and today I got on the scale 7 lbs lighter. Woo hoo!? My favorite skinny jeans are definitely more comfortable. This afternoon madtownteen and I will bake some paleo dark chocolate chip walnut cookies to celebrate.?

One thing that helped me lose the weight last year is a sugar sub called swerve. I have to have my coffee and it needs to taste like coffee.
Swerve is the best substitute I have ever tried and you can bake with it, too.
Have no affiliation with this product, btw.
Post shower, some Tam Dao. Foot surgeon appt this afternoon for this fracture.

Chosing a favorite rose perfume is quite difficult for me. I love Lipstick Rose, POAL, Calypso, Lyric, Paris, Encense Mythique D’Orient and some others, but for some unknown reason Jo Malone Red Roses always wins my heart, perhaps because of its simplicity.

          • Lovestosmellgood says:
            11 February 2020 at 2:51 pm

Yes, I only recommended her after I saw that you liked Aciman. Or else I wouldn’t know how open you were (in general)

Oakland F recommended Renault to me after I read Song of Achilles and Circe (both good) Renault is creates more of an ancient world in some of her historical novels, and I never wanted to leave. I prefer her to Madeline Miller.
Renault’s books have affected me so deeply, both emotionally and intellectually.

On a side note, I have a girlfriend that I share books with, and we both read Song of Achilles and I told her over coffee that I felt like I was falling in love with Achilles while I was reading that book! She is Greek, and gave me a beautiful Greek handmade vase and on one side its a ship. She said, “to think of your Achilles sailing to Troy” Such a sweet gift!

This is a longer post than I intended! Sorry for that!

            11 February 2020 at 3:32 pm

Wow,I love the gift from your greek friend, that is so thoughtful!
I can’t wait to dive into Renault. And thanks for the other recommendation,I’ll definitely seek them all out.More free time to read and relax is around the corner for me,luckily! Thanks for your responses, always appreciated no matter the length! It speaks of your passion and genuine interest.xo

That is one cheery looking teapot. I am drinking Marriage Freres NOEL In LOVE. A bit heavy on the vanilla, but a lovely way to start off the work day.
I am wearing Jicky and Zoologie’s Bee. They layer well.

As some of you know, from my Sunday rant, about traveling OSCAR night, I was rooting, but pessimistic about a movie which I believe is a hands down classic: Parasite. I got home just as the Jane Fonda announced the show was over, and to my delight, there was the director on stage smiling. I have since learned he and the movie were the night big winners. If you haven’t seen it, go see it, or stream it. This is a movie in which a sense of smell and the feeling of sunlight are key plot points. (Also morse code)

Well, sure! On me, Ummagumma is a sweetly spicy tobacco/leather scent with a hint of incense – comforting and sexy at the same time. The notes per Luckyscent are saffron, carnation, chocolate, tobacco, leather, labdanum, sandalwood, cedar, frankincense, tonka bean, vanilla. My nose can’t really isolate most of those notes individually, and am guessing it’s because the scent is very well-blended. I sometimes think it shares a tiny bit of DNA with Kerosene Broken Theories, if you’ve ever tried that one.

My husband has banned another perfume from our apt: Vetiver & Golden Vanilla :( He really dislikes it and it’s not worth the fight with so many others out there I enjoy and he’s ok with plus, I’ll likely forget about it in 3 months as I do most scents.

Oof. My fiance is much the same. I get around it by wearing scents he hates to work, so he doesn’t smell them until they’ve had at least 10 h to dissipate from my skin. So it’s more of a nights-and-weekends ban :)

Now Vetiver & Golden Vanilla sounds even more appealing! A banned perfume, ooooh.

My husband hates, hates, hates vanilla. Even FdD, which is vanilla adjacent. YET, he likes Agent Provocateur and these days the saffron in it smells exactly like perm lotion to me. Maybe that’s what bothers Pixel about saffron too?

Hey twin! We do smell great today ?
Sorry about the veto, though. My husband has only ever reacted badly to 1 I can think of (FM Iris Poudre, which gave him a headache).
He also doesn’t like gourmands or other sweet ones, and fortunately I’m not big on them either. But like you, I generally forget about perfumes in a couple of months.

I’m cocoa cozy in Lush I’m Home. Still trying to jump start myself (still, this late in the morning) with a 20oz Mountain Dew. Tea won’t do it for me… :)

Much warm weather, much relaxing, plus a fair amount of good food and rum. We are very happy and I will hate to go home.

This island is more Brits & Canadian visitors than Americans, and it is astonishing how many of them come for 3 weeks or a month, or some even longer. And when they hear we are American they already assume we are here for 7-10 days, which is exactly the truth.

I am in Guerlain Mitsouko Fleur de Lotus, which I haven’t worn in ages. I had basically forgotten about it. It is the Mitsouko version of Shalimar’s Shalimar eau Legere. Pretty darn good.

Well. It is better than Prick by itself, I suppose. I have no doubt that was considered. I won’t be the least surprised if that becomes the more masculine version of the scent!

I ordered a sample from TPC–should arrive by next week. Looking forward to trying it. I like rose and patchouli!

What a nice thing to do!

When I was visiting with my sister, we talked a bit about perfume on my last day there. She used to have some good ones back in the day (Rive Gauche, Chanel 19 edt), but is recently more into essential oils. I was talking about ‘swaps’, decants’ and NST of course; terms she never heard before. She was totally impressed.. lol.

I was kind of surprised that she didn’t like carrot seed oil, at all! To me, I get earthiness and hints of orris root. I thought she would like it, but said I’d buy it off her if she didn’t. And now I have 2 bottles in my house!

Maybe I was inspired by the teapot today because I chose Annick Goutal Duel. I needed something that wouldn’t further irritate my sinuses (this cold, ugh!), and Duel is soft and cheerful with opening notes of tea and lemon.

Tonight I’m going to a concert and will somehow have to stay up late even though I’m already so tired. Hopefully seeing my favorite band energizes me! I did take a half day off work tomorrow so I can sleep in.

Hello, dear friends! I’m wearing Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights from a sample given to me by a dear NSTer, and I certainly have checked my snobbery at the door. This is lovely. I’m told I’m supposed to get a bunch of patchouli from this, but instead what I smell is a warm Fils de Dieu-style citrus/raw rice combo.

I had a FANTASTIC weekend of overexertion and music and joy, and now I’m pretty sick, either from exhaustion or from being around hundreds of people from around the world. Regular readers with excellent memories will recall that this past weekend was my grad school a cappella group’s 30th anniversary reunion/concert. I’m lucky enough to live 20 min away from my grad school, so I biked or Ubered to and from events (parking on campus is a NIGHTMARE, and in any case I hate driving). But of course most of these 30 years of singers don’t live nearby, so they flew in from literally all over the world to be a part of this. The concert went very well, and I had a pretty important solo (preen preen!), which felt remarkable given how many generations of great voices were present. Even more wonderful than the concert was seeing tons of old friends and meeting new people with whom I shared this great past. Now I can’t wait for 35th :)

Anyway today I’m working from home because I’m seriously dragging. I’ve developed a pretty miserable cough and low-grade fever. Worth it.

I was invited by a friend to a fundraising dinner last night at a fancy French restaurant and am still basking in the memories of all that glory–five courses of superlative food and wine matching! Omg, everything was so good. The standout for me was a very simple dish with a spoonful of perfect saffron risotto with one seared scallop and one asparagus spear. Simplicity is so golden! And a wonderful Sancerre! To die for! Mmmm!! I wore no scent so as not to disturb any diners. This morning I’m wearing my new Chay Mimosa Blossom with its delightful coconut-y note. Trying to work up the motivation to pay all my bills… I’d rather go back to bed. Sigh.

I’m wearing Musc Ravageur. I still haven’t decided whether I’m anosmic to part of this fragrance or just more tolerant of musk notes. Reviews speak of its “aggressive” nature and I don’t get any of that. On me, it’s more a spicy oriental, and rather subdued.

Well, I’ve been wearing it a lot lately since I got a sample as a freebie, and “subdued” is not something I’d use to describe it! I’d ask a friend to give you an honest opinion. I love it, but am not sure I’d wear it in a work environment or around someone sensitive to smells.

That tea pot made me suddenly remember Trefle Pur, so I’ll spritz that on later after work. That is, if I can locate my sample(s?). I bought one of the Atelier sample sets years ago, and then was gifted two more. I donated a bunch of stuff, so we’ll see what remains…

SOTD is AA Ginger Piccante. My bottle arrived after being lost in frozen Wyoming for a week. I can see why this is getting crushed on here… nice ginger + rose. I hope the Coconut AA that was released at the same time as the Ginger one makes it to the discounters eventually, I’d like to try that one too.

Still recuperating from a few days in NJ. I don’t time zone shift all that well, and trying to do it for just a few days confuses my whole body. I’ll get it straight sooner or later! MIL’s 90th birthday party went well though, and Generalissimo SIL got her diva-ness out of her system the first day we were there (oh man what a day that was) and behaved like a human for the party… thankful for that :)

What a pretty teapot! I’m a morning coffee person, but I love a nice teapot and cup/saucer set. I’ve gone a bit odd in my coffee the past couple of months (since mid December) in that I bought some Starbucks Peppermint Mocha-flavored coffee. I normally deeply dislike flavored coffee, but I enjoyed this one, despite thinking it should be in a dark not medium roast. I mix it with regular coffee or espresso roast. Anyhoo….I actually bought raspberry chocolate flavored coffee from a local grocery store last week because I’m almost done with the PM. What is going on with me???

Generous sprays of Lancôme Jasmins Marzipane for me today. I find this to be quite romantic. And an early blast of almond never hurts. I’ll definitely finish off this travel spray once spring approaches.

Warm and cozy today in Felanilla, over a base of LM Ambre Vanille body cream.
I’m really bad at getting through scented body products. I bought a set of three (maybe four?) small body creams at least a decade ago, and still have the pistachio cream to use up. Plus about a third of the ambre as well. I think the Amber Project will finish that one off, at least. ?

Last week I finally thunked a bottle of Thymes Frasier Fir lotion. It wasn’t even a big bottle, yet it took me 2 years to get thru it.

I have received the most amazing gift from Scentspirit. She offered a few weeks ago to send me a bag of samples via her sister-in-law who would be visiting New Zealand and could post them. Instead, her sister-in-law got in touch with me to see if we could meet.
So, last night I met Krys, her husband and the couple they are travelling with. They are the loveliest people, and bag of samples is HUGE.
There must be well over 100 little vials, and some not so little. There are things I’ve been wanting to try and others I’ve never heard of. I will pass lots on to Kanuka, but not till I’ve tried them – and I don’t know where to start!

And now for some NST-ish business. Koyel gets at least one enabler pin from me. Her nudge on the SSS sale pushed me over the edge to get a couple of travel sprays. They arrived today, and I love both of them! I got Incense Pure and Rose Volupte. Looking forward to wearing them sometime soon. So far, my “No Buy” has been a “Very Low Buy”. So late to check in! I’m wearing LPRN Black Perfecto. That bottle was calling me this morning. Added bonus of more almond.

Yep, that was laugh out loud funny! I startled one of my cats, too.

Wearing vintage Farouche tonight from my evilbay purchase a couple months ago.

It felt almost spring-like outside after work so it felt right; my bottle is one of those pressurized spray bottles, so it was fun spraying. My hubby said it smelled ‘strong’ so it must be good stuff!

I’m hoping to get that spring like weather soon. Not this week though. Cold and snowy still.

SOTD is/was (it’s late and the internet has been down here) for two straight days Guerlain Encens Mythique d’orient.
    So easy, and perfect.
I am officially on the waiting list for a normal sized bottle. I too, am craving a rose perfume.
