Wednesday scent of the day 2/5

Posted by Robin on 5 February 2020 237 Comments

Hump Day and World Nutella Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Banane. Over a period of a few months, Jirish, Pyramus and Monkeytoe all mentioned in the comments that it was a fun fragrance, and since I badly needed some fun at the time, I bought it unsniffed. Yep, it's fun.

Reminder: on Saturday, 2/8, Now Smell This turns 15! For our birthday, we're moving the Friday Project to Saturday, and meshing it with the Lazy Weekend Poll. Wear a fragrance that you found out about from Now Smell This, or received in a freebiemeet, swapmeet or splitmeet, or just wear a favorite fragrance that you've talked about on Now Smell This. Plus, if you can, share the single best tip or piece of advice you ever received from another reader. (There will be no post on Friday, by the way, because I'm traveling again...if you want to chat, use the Thursday poll!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Scented journey today is filled with generosity of others…

A friend gave me a set of soaps from Soap & Paper Factory for Christmas. This morning I looked through them and opened the green tea one. Love a new soap in the shower! This one is subtle but really lovely – I actually smelled more of the tea in the air as I was drying off rather than in the shower itself. Luxurious bubbles too.

Then I used the rose body lotion my husband’s goddaughter gave us, also for Christmas. A really pretty rose from a beautiful young woman. What a joy to watch her grow into adulthood.

And finally, sprayed on OJ Ta’if. As I said before, I heard about this house in NST years ago. Ta’if is from a splitmeet a few years back.

    A very scented morning!

Bringing some summer vibe to my day today with Parfum d’ Empire Corsica Furiosa. After such a great and tempting review by Robin and all her love and praise about it, I blind bought a bottle and it is now one of my favorite summer perfumes. Sunny, bright, happy, refreshing scent . Wonderful!

Having mentioned Niki de Saint Phalle yesterday, I decided to wear it. This is another NST find, with a full bottle bought unsniffed. I have worn it quite a bit this warm winter. I’m almost ready for another, bigger bottle.

    Looking forward to Saturday!
I’m from Toronto, Canada… we’re having a mild winter, nevertheless, we’re months into the cold, dry season… and I’m craving warmth.

I’ve tried a few scents looking to hit the right balance… Comptoir Sud Pacifique Banane sounds like an option actually!

In the meantime, I’ve been veering to musky, woody scents… Samsara didn’t quite do the trick, neither did Jo Malone’s Velvet Rose and Oud… this morning, I broke out my precious vintage bottle of Fendi and I’m in love again… to the point where I’m totally distracted at work and just breathing in this beautiful scent! I still have almost a full bottle, but did a quick sweep online to see if I could buy an extra standby so I can enjoy this scent more often – goodness, the prices have sky-rocketed! How can I petition Fendi to start making this again??? OR … does anyone have recos for viable options?
    TIA!

I find that sometimes I just need to schedule fun into my calendar. Fun looks different for everyone but my life leans more intense than fun with lots of relationships and other responsibilities that I find it’s helpful to plan for fun activities, even really small ones, weeks/months out. And then of course there’s perfume!

    SOTD: Kelly Caleche

I tried the new JM scent, Vetiver & Golden Vanilla, and quite liked it! It smelled more tonka to me than vanilla, but not too sweet and yet still there. I tried it on skin and it had good longevity as well.

Yay for planning fun. And as I get older, I realize how important the little things are as well. A walk in a park and a friendly hello from a golden retriever. A cup of coffee at my favorite cafe. Cherry trees in bloom. A good laugh with work colleagues. 30 minutes on my yoga mat with Adrienne.

I didn’t actually put it into words, but I think I used to feel like the world was somehow responsible for me enjoying my life. It turns out there is no one but me to ensure that life contains things that matter to me and fun is important. And fragrance is a part of that for me!

Quite the struggle to get out of bed today. I stayed up late bingeing and finishing watching The Bonfire of Destiny (Le Bazar de la Charité) on Netflix. Anyone watch it? Kind of brutal painful to watch, but I couldn’t stop, lol! Not great pre-bedtime viewing.
Anyway, Chanel Paris-Riviera today and lots of coffee.

That show is not for the faint of heart. The 1st episode is really brutal to watch! But I think it’s based on true events.

I do this about once a quarter but with books. I’ll stay up until 4 am or so and then mess up the rest of the week. And I am not fun to be around lacking sleep. I’ll need to check out that show. The word “brutal” is pretty strong so it’s likely I’ll take a pass but, will check it out.

    SotD = CdG Kyoto

NSTers helped me learn how much I love woody scents. Also learned that incense is a wonderful perfume note, and that CdG has produced some unforgettable scents.

Wish I had remembered there’s a hint of immortelle in Kyoto, I would have worn it for that CP a little while back.

Breakfast bowl for today: two tablespoons oats, one tablespoon chia seeds, unsweetened almond milk, and cinnamon cooked together, then added frozen blueberries, a bit of pink salt and topped it off with two eggs scrambled in olive oil, turmeric, and a bit of garlic.

I woke up hungry. Now I’m feeling gooooood! and wishing everyone here at NST a wonderful Wednesday. :D

I sent my resume to this job mainly to appease my husband, who hates that I have to be on-call one week a month. I was surprised when they called me in for an interview. I was much more surprised when they called me 2 hours after the first interview to set up the second one. :-) Serendipity at work – I definitely bonded with the two people doing the first interview. It was like everything I said, they were nodding and smiling, and the questions they asked me, I was like, “Oh, good question! Let me tell you about the time…” Plus it was colder than the dickens and so I just wore a turtleneck under a tweedy jacket, and thought, “that will have to be a good enough interview outfit.” One of them was wearing a turtleneck, and the other had on a tweedy sweater. It was like we we all dressed out of the same closet. My peeps! :-)

Brr, down in the 30’s here this morning in San Diego, that’s cold for us in our flimsy little beach bungalows. Wearing Arte Profumi Samharam and trying to psyche myself up to go out in the cold to yoga.

I’m disappointed it’s so cold in San Diego – and ocean-cold is serious cold! Must try Arte Profumi Samharam: a few of you have mentioned it!
It’s 21f (-6C) in Toronto today. Brr… shearling coat, suede boots and black tea for me.

It was 5C when I went out to my car at 6:45. Brr. But warmer than Montréal. I’m a black tea fan too, mostly ceylon and assam.

It’s quite chilly in Los Angeles too.

Oh this fractured foot makes everything challenging.

That picture reminds me of this past summer when we went to Zanzibar. There is a local coffee place Stonetown Cafe.

Every morning we walked there for crepes with bananas and coffee for me, masala chai for my sister. 30 pounds later, there are no crepes with bananas on the menu for me.

Post very slow very careful shower a bit of something comforting. Maybe Satori.

I’m wearing VC&A Bois d’Iris, which is an NST story from beginning to end. I had a decant of TDC Bois d’Iris, but it was just a bit too peppery for me and other irises often felt too “cold” to me. So I read Robin’s review of the VC&A BDI with interest, then noted others who mentioned it over time. I finally tried the VC&A version myself and fell in love. Last year, I bought a bottle for a splitmeet and we’ve lived happily ever after, more or less.

Iris is a challenging note for me. I really love Iris Noble EDT but that’s about it for iris. Apparently it’s the flower of the iris in this vs. the other parts and so it’s more floral vs. rooty.

Cuir de Lancome, from the splitmeet a while back. I was about to type and completely blanked on the name and my poor brain kept fishing around for “cuir something”. Had to look the name up. I hope I get a bit sharper as the day progresses.

That looks very tasty, Robin! Of course there is a World Nutella Day.

I’m in Rose Infernale from a decant some kind NSTer sent me years ago. I’ve been craving a lot of rose lately; it’s a comfort note to me.

My grad school a cappella group turns 30 this year! We are having a massive reunion/anniversary concert this weekend. About 150 members are coming in from around the world to participate. (I, luckily, only need to drive ~20 min westward.) I’ve been practicing a lot of music I haven’t looked at in a decade, and I cannot WAIT to see friends I haven’t seen in a couple years, and all the friendly acquaintances I haven’t seen since graduating. This is such a big deal that I’ll be taking a day off from work for it! The concert will be a self-indulgent, multi-hour business that will doubtless bring more joy to us than to our audience (though tickets for the show are surprisingly pricey and have pretty much sold out!), and I cannot wait to get on stage and sing with a bunch of people with fantastic voices.

Enjoy every moment. And you’re wise to take the day off. In the past I would rush to airports after work and plan vacations to land 3 hours before starting work. I now think about all those wasted days and added stress. I didn’t add hours to my life – just took away lots of the enjoyment of life. On a different note, I have a terrible voice, but would have loved to be able to sing. And play the trumpet!!

I didn’t quite do as much touristing as I’d hoped because of my husband’s schedule and also because some attractions that I wanted to see were not open when I wanted to go. However, going to two lovely perfume shops, seeing the Dali x Magritte exhibit, the Magritte museum and the Cauchie house were all highlights. It rained and was grey the entire time but as the sign in the airport said, “Chocolate should be kept away from the sun so no wonder Belgian chocolate is the best” or something like that. Only tried chocolates from 5 brands…

Have been very disciplined about my Nooming and diet overhaul–but golly that sweet bomb of pancakes, bananas, and Nutella looks good, a little horrifying, but also good. I better go eat some full grain, beige breakfast . . .

Oh, I’m Nooming too! How’s it going for you? Actually the breakfast burrito that I mentioned up above is a pretty good Noom-style breakfast, except if you put in bacon…. But the microwave/pre-cooked kind only has 20 calories per slice, so it’s really not terrible, even though it’s a “red” food.

It is going pretty well actually. I am feeling very virtuous at least. I have definitely downed my fair share of whole wheat tortillas–but I have yet to really enjoy them. Brown Jasmine rice, and brown Basmati, on the other hand, are now enjoyable staples. I’ll keep that in mind about the bacon if I get a craving for that salty fatty goodness!

My new Noom trick is orange salad dressing… I take a whole orange, peel it, chop it up finely saving all the bits and juice. I mix the orange bits and juice with a couple of teaspoons of really good, fancy olive oil, and pour that over salad, which I top with crunchy Maldon salt and a some black pepper.

My sotd was Bois d’encens, stolen’ from my husband (it was my christmas present for him)

Its quite handy to have a partner who appreciates nice fragrances. That way I can always gift him something awesome i love to wear myself as well ? haha.
But lets be honest: in the end he benefits the most…he smells mighty good AND does not need to spend one euro on it. ?

    And isnt Bois d’encens wonderful??!!
I started sampling it because of NST. Thank you guys ?

In other perfume related news: i ‘bumped’ into a 100 ml bottle of Jubilation XXV discounted. 50 percent off!!!!
So thats a pretty good deal.
I asked the sales lady why and she thought it was because they sometimes clear out part of their collection so they can make space for new/other Amouages (they dont have room for the whole collection in that department store…).

So guess what came home with me today ?…..oh and this is my first Amouage bottle.
(….and now I need to lock away my debit and credit card for rest of the month)

    SOTD = Bruno Fazzolari Ummagumma

…because Deva wore it yesterday and I wore it a year ago yesterday. I heard about Ummagumma here although perhaps not Deva. Anyway, it’s a super nice chocolate, incense, tonka, vanilla and smoke fragrance. 7 spritzes and I could probably do 1-3 more without asphyxiating myself ?.

I’m in 10 Corso Como thanks to a generous NSTer. My decant probably has 1-2 wears left and then I will likely get a bottle.
What a morning. Took my h to urgent care and it turns out he has pneumonia.? So many people coughing in the waiting room, I couldn’t wait to get the heck out of there.?Wash your hands people, and stay healthy!

Me & my bottle of 10 Corso Como are having another standoff. Last year the plastic cap on top got stuck on the bottle; it took some doing to get it off. And last weekend, I went to grab it before running out to dinner with friends, and it wouldn’t spray! Boo! Will have to sort out the sprayer now.

Hope your husband gets better soon!

Wearing Antonia for the 4th day in a row. I am trying to thunk my small decant from a split offered by Clarissa a couple of years ago before it evaporates. I like it a lot and I would consider a small bottle (a little goes a long way with this one, I find).

I’m taking my time with NST this morning because it’s a holiday here. Waitangi Day marks the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between Māori and the British Crown. There is generally a mix of celebration and protest, unsurprisingly.
Post-shower, I’m planning on trying a few more samples from Luckyscent. I can’t begin to think which things I’ve tried because of NST. There are lots!

Late check-in, but here for afternoon report! :)

I had a few minutes to dig thru my sample box this morning, and I pulled Paco Rabanne One Million. Didn’t realize it was a men’s fragrance, but I’m perfectly OK with it! Spicy leather goodness; I smell like I’ve been hugging the hubs. I’ve seen mixed reviews on this one, but I like it….

I don’t think I learned of it on NST, but I reached for FM Iris Poudre this morning. It’s a longtime favorite, and I wanted it to conform me through what I thought might be a stressful conversation at work (which actually turned out fine).

At first, my travel spray seemed to smell more alcoholy than I remember. Has anyone else had this experience with Malle travel sprays?

SOTD is Youth Dew Amber Nude, which I hunted down after someone here on NST mentioned it. Good stuff! and I would certainly never have known about it without NST, since it pre-dates my interest in perfume.

It seems it is my turn for a perfume to go MIA in shipment. Here’s hoping it resolves as positively as Koyel’s Rose Jam misadventure. I managed to snag the last bottle of AA Ginger Piccante off Fragrancenet (lillyjo, thanks for the heads up!) but it has been stuck in Wyoming since last Thursday. They must be having serious bad weather! FedEx has no delivery date for it now. Someday…!

Yesterday I got a massive haircut — chopped off 14 inches to donate, and then my stylist got creative with the color. I like the work she does — the coloring always looks good — but the final result is always an adventure :) This time it’s definitely reddish, darker than ever before, and way short on the blonde highlights. Whoa! I’ll see how I get used to it… might need to go back for some blonding.

I’m wearing my favorite NST-recommended iris, Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue, and crossing my fingers that my ski bus isn’t cancelled for tomorrow. Winds are supposed to be 50-70 mph which would stop the lifts running, and it’s supposed to be a mix of rain and wet snow, too. Hoping for a weather miracle.

Today is even greyer and gloomier than yesterday was, weather-wise. Ugh.

SOTD = back in Caron Yatagan today. Part of it was to confirm if I had really smelled Eau de Poo or not in this. No poop today. But this is still a quiet, well mannered scent on me. Was this ever a powerhouse scent? It sure doesn’t act like something that was born in the 1970’s.

Oy! Not sure what about yesterday but this week is turning out to be like last week. Le sigh. I offered to meet with someone (she wanted to “analyze” something) and she was like I am doing x, do we really need to meet? Okaaaay. Sure. I will send her a data dump tomorrow and she can schedule time that is convenient for ME, no compromises because I’ve already been putting in 10-11 hour days, some days a little longer.

I’m wearing Ambre Narguile today from the most recent Splitmeet. Our weather turned cold and I wanted the warmth.

When I visited Mom yesterday she was not at all herself, listless and unresponsive. I asked the nurse to check her out and she did and said at least it was not a stroke, and that perhaps she was just tired. I hope she’ll be better when I go tomorrow. It’s worrying.

If that’s a sudden change, my suggestion would be to have her checked for either a UTI or a respiratory infection if she’s still like that tomorrow. Older people with dementia usually show changes in mental status from relatively simple infections. I hope it’s nothing, but better safe…
