Tuesday scent of the day 2/4

Posted by Robin on 4 February 2020 194 Comments

Tuesday and Rosa Parks Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m wearing Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Nil. Tea at the moment is an organic Ceylon from Idulgashinna Estate via Upton.

Reminder: on Saturday, 2/8, Now Smell This turns 15! For our birthday, we're moving the Friday Project to Saturday, and meshing it with the Lazy Weekend Poll. Wear a fragrance that you found out about from Now Smell This, or received in a freebiemeet, swapmeet or splitmeet, or just wear a favorite fragrance that you've talked about on Now Smell This. Plus, if you can, share the single best tip or piece of advice you ever received from another reader. (There will be no post on Friday, by the way, because I'm traveling again...if you want to chat, use the Thursday poll!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Porcelain Lotus Teapot B ("These pieces are wood fired without an encasing to create beautiful variations, textures, and natural warping of the shape from exposure to the open flames. This doesn't come without a sacrifice as a third of the work is lost in the process... Each piece is a pleasure to hold in the hand and the body will change color and develop a beautiful petina over time.") is $350 at Tea Dealers.

I’m in the radiant Chanel 1932 thanks to a generous NSTer. Love this one.?
I have been having the most vivid and strange dreams for the past couple of weeks and the only thing I can contribute it to is I have been eating better. I have completely eliminated sugar from my diet. When we were in college my H took the psychology of sleep and dreams, I sure wish I had. Ironic because I was the psych major.

No, not forever, lol, but I think there are hard core paleo eaters who really don’t eat any sugar. I know myself and I love sweets too much to say I would never eat them again.

        Me too!
Yes, but I’m really trying to eliminate unnecessary sugar. I know a piece of dark chocolate or a cookie will have some sugar in it, but I’ve started reading the labels of everything I buy (I know, I’ve become one of those people?) and it’s scary how it’s in so many foods that I think don’t need it…things like chicken broth, stewed tomatoes, Italian sausage, bacon!

We’re pretty sugar conscious- especially my husband who did bring home sugar-free bacon once and it was not good. Too salty and brittle. I think a little sugar is needed for texture and to balance flavors.

I had extremely vivid dreams all involving Disneyland last night. I dream of Disneyland often enough that my dream Disneyland has its own identity and setting entirely different from the real one! of course, as in all dreams, I never actually get to on any ride.

I loved Chinchilla when I tried it but wasn’t able to identify it as a honey perfume. I kind of see it now that you say that. Have you tried Slowdive? What about Bee? What about Bee’s Bliss? (I’m trying to calibrate myself.)

I like all of those except Slowdive (which was too sledgehammery for me), although I don’t get much honey from Bee’s Bliss and think of it more as a green/hay/floral. I have only tried Bee once on paper, and really liked it, but need to spend more time with it.

When I want something green and astringent I reach for either Silences or Niki de Saint Phalle. Niki de Saint Phalle gets its astringent quality from artemisia, but the effect is similar.

    SipOTD is greek coffee.

Most of the perfumes I wear I have heard of from either NST or Bois de Jasmine. It has not been a long journey for me since I started reading perfume blogs in 2009. I went from there very deep into the rabbit hole! ?

I’m wearing Tokyo Milk Dark Tainted Love, thanks to the ever generous Hajusuuri. Today is my Friday, woohoo! Yesterday a young girl at my work complimented my sotd, which was Allure edp. Then asked my opinion of what smells good, that lasts. I’m going to bring her samples to try today. I asked her what she wears now, and she said ” I don’t know, something I got for Christmas” I think this is how most people wear perfume. Lol

Sometimes they’re not ready for a question about what they are wearing. I was in the grocery store recently and passed a guy who was clearly sporting fragrance. I asked him if he was wearing something, and he got all “deer in the headlights” and stammered, “well, I think I am”. I just complimented him on his choice and moved on.
I get inordinately excited when I smell any perfume out in the wild. People don’t wear it much around here. ?

Coco edp from about five years ago. Shadow of its former self, but lovely just the same.

Funnily enough, I remember reading on a perfume blog, maybe it was here? Maybe Perfume Shrine? Somewhere else? A few years ago. Anyway, the writer–who I think was selling off some of her perfumes– was saying that Coco was so unpopular among perfumistas that she couldn’t even give away her bottle.

My bottle is about 5 years old too. I think it’s beautiful still. The biggest difference I notice is that it doesn’t last for 2 weeks on my sweater, the way it once did. I would gladly take anyone’s Coco! I notice on the YouTube videos that people will recommend Coco Mademoiselle and clarify to NOT get the regular Coco because it smells ” old lady” lol
NO IT DOES NOT! It’s totally sexy imo.

My bottle of Coco is about 20 years old and although I don’t wear it often these days, I used to wear it almost daily many years ago. Potent. One or two sprays were enough, especially for work.
I am still not sure how to remove the the bottle from its black plastic encasing so I can find out how much juice I’ve got left. If anyone has the answer, please let me know.

Today I’m wearing Fils de Dieu, which I started wanting because deva spoke so highly of it, and which I am able to wear because springpansy kindly sent me a decant of it :)

Yesterday’s Tea Rose was also on theme: I got it a couple years ago from the lovely kpaint, whom I never see here anymore. Hope she is well. Anyway, as I think I said already, I could do a YEAR of NST-themed perfumes, because I grew here as a perfumista, and only perhaps 10 % of my collection is something I didn’t read about here first.

Don’t hate me–I loathe Shalimar. I don’t know if it’s my skin or my nose, but I cannot stand it. It was my first, my worst scrubber. I see no connection between FdD and Shalimar, and that is to my benefit :)

Forgot what I put in this morning and since it’s faded quite a bit, had to really sniff and think. It’s Kelly Caleche edp from a swap decant, which I don’t wear often- partly because the last time I wore it at home, my naked kitty started wheezing ? Hopefully it’ll be just a mere wisp by the time I get home.
I love the tea set and reading about the firing method.

It’s still a mystery what the triggers are. Sometimes she doesn’t react to things I thought she was reacting to previously. I don’t spray near her just to be safe. I do think she is sensitive to mold, though.

Rant – NJ Transit yesterday ?. Utter chaos. A train broke down in the tunnel and then overhead wires were not working. Just about every train across all lines were cancelled (most) or delayed. In a good day, people already push and shove. You get the picture. I decided to Uber it because I don’t need the nonsense. I also chose to not share the ride for the $25 price difference – it’s worth not being in close quarters with 3 strangers.

Not perfume related, but I started listening to podcasts last month (finally) because of NST!

I spotted a recommendation for the David Tennant & Olivia Colman episode (was it you, Robin, who shared that link?? Sorry cant remember).
My favourite subject now for podcasts though is history! It really makes the commute so much smoother. ?

Which history podcasts are you enjoying?

One I really like and cannot stop talking about isn’t technically a history cast, but Tim Hartford’s “Cautionary Tales” is crazy good food for thought and touches on critical moments in history (the description leads to you believe that there is some humor involved. So far, the two episodes I have listened to have been harrowing, not humorous!) I sort of liked “You’re Dead to Me”–though I have only listened to one episode so far (on Boudica).

I binged You’re dead to me ? Quality depends on guests they have though. But its short and light hearted and sometimes thats just what I need.

Last week I started listening to The Medieval Podcast. First episodes the audio quality was subpar but its getting better. Subjects and guests are interesting!

        I also started Revisionist History…
….aaaand I am now subscribing to Cautionary Tales, thank you for the tip.

Lots of catching up to do. ?

Hello NST! It’s a gloomy and grey Tuesday here. I stepped on a scale for the first time in months, and discovered that I have gained at least 5 pounds from holiday (over)indulgences. Phooey. So I am cutting way back on my snacking and junk food. The almost daily little square of dark chocolate is not in the ban.

SOTD = Caron Yatagan, from the sample stash. Not sure where I first heard about this one. It’s spicy and a little skanky, but surprisingly quiet and well behaved on me.

I did about the same amount of damage this holiday, but I did not do so well cutting back until last week…4 days of 2 meals a day took care of the last of it without having to give up ice cream or chocolate. Late to the party but I’m rocking a generous helping of Bat today— I’m trying not to be precious with it, but I know I’ll miss it when I’ve used up my remaining ~3ml. (I moved recently and discovered that about half my decants suffered some serious shrinkage so I’m trying to cut down on the hoarding instinct)

    SotD = Penhaligon’s Ostara

Gosh, I got weak looking at that teapot and cup today. I adore white porcelain, lotus flowers, and teapots. That’s a heady combination there. Thank goodness the price puts it firmly in the realm of dream within a dream for me, heh heh.

Remember the excitement over Ostara? It was all over the blogs. :D I do love it, but it gets little skin time. So today I decided to smell like spring even though it’s almost bitterly cold here. Ostara smelled great all day, and the sweater I’m wearing will smell nice for days.

Terrific Tuesday hugs and kisses to everyone, you smell fantastic. Mmmmwah!

Ostara is one of my loves — I have two backup bottles! Can’t believe they discontinued it so quickly.

Good evening! Commando during the day, now wearing a couple of sprays of 4711 Pink Pepper and Grapefruit. I learned about this one from Pixel’s split from the large bottles she got. (Thank you, Pixel!) :)

My day wasn’t bad as far as getting things done, but I’m getting a cold and I didn’t feel as energetic as I would have liked to. I still got errands done and some grocery shopping, and worked out in the yard for a little while. I picked some snowdrops to enjoy the flowers inside and pruned dead canes off some of my roses.

SOTD today was Dasein’s Spring: a little wishful thinking because it really has felt like spring here, and daffodils are starting to bloom, but I’m sure we’ll get one last blast of winter before it really is spring.
