Thursday scent of the day 1/30

Posted by Robin on 30 January 2020 278 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, Croissant Day and the Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Lush 25:43.

Reminder: on 1/31, celebrate Backward Day by reversing your usual perfume choice or routine in some way.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I wouldn’t mind a croissant right now. I’m wearing the golden glory of Le parfum de Thérèse, which I think I mostly wear in spring. It’s a good counterpoint for another grey and rainy day.

Tea is MF Parzifal, which is nice but not great.

LPdT is a perfect spring scent, I wear it mostly in Montréal as spring is barely noticeable in San Diego.

SipOTD is a greek coffee. Yup, not mastered this one yet. A friend gifted some Greek coffee from Greece and a birki, this is a trial and error process.

Breakfast this morning is some orange slices soaked in orange blossom water and sprinkled with a bit of cinnamon.

I can tell you that my kitchen table smells very fragrant between the smell of sweet coffee and oranges.

Its cold, but the sun is shining…I am going to curl up with Renault book until I have to pick up the kids.

My neighbor whom is Greek showed me once, and with her, it came out so wonderful. When I am alone, I can’t figure the water to coffee ratio. The one thing is the sugar, I have mastered that because I like it moderately sweet.
The smell of this coffee is something amazing.

Let me know if you have any advice?

My advice, ltsg is to go to the café.
My neighbor in Greece taught me how to make phyllo so thin one could read a newspaper through it, my coffee was always not right.

In the last drops of my beloved Iris Silver Mist. The decant evaporated at a high speed in the last couple of weeks. I thought that I had 3-4 more wears. Wrong! I was shocked when I found out this morning that there were just few drops left. So sad! A replacement is on the top of my to buy list now. Samples are evaporating slower than decants, so I have to check all of them again and finish some before they are all gone.

So sad when that happens. Same happened to my SL ISM and Sarrasins decants. I have about a ml left of each and didn’t wear them much :( I find the 1ml dabber vials last forever!

It is impossible to hoard decants, no matter how much we love a scent. I have noticed that evaporation occurs faster during winter time, at least in my case. I have some dabber samples that have lasted for years and they are still in perfect condition with zero evaporation, especially the ones from Luckyscent.

Thank you, Sebastian. It not easy to find ISM at the stores anymore. Decants and samples are easier to find online. I am not considering paying more than $300 for a bell jar, so another decant will be on my near future. I will make sure I will use it more often.

I’m sorry: I hate myself when it happens. I wrap my decants in parafilm but it helps only if the sprayer isn’t the source of evaporation.

BTW, just in case: I haven’t got an e-mail from you.

I always wrap my decants in parafilm, but it seems that sometimes that doesn’t work. A good reason for not hoarding them.

Have u seen the 30ml + 30ml of ISM on amazon? I was a bit unsure wether to go for them, it was my last serious perfume treat about 1 year ago. What swung it was the very positive reviews.
I paid £79, and they come in very chic black metal hexagon shaped, long cases, I don’t know if these are also available in US, I would highly recommend.

Good for you for finishing this! I have a weekly routine now, which I call Finish It Friday, of trying to finish off my decants partly for this reason (evaporation) and partly to get rid of the clutter.

I love your idea of a Finish it Day! That would be a great community project. I have been trying to finish decants and full bottles than are less than half full lately. However, I can barely catch up on many of them, because I have a lot. I will definitely copy your idea of one or two days during the week just to finish things that I love and that are almost ready to disappear.

I’ve pretty much cut all bread from my diet except on a very rare occasion. I’m at the age where it is really not helping the waist. And this is so hard(!) as I live by a French bakery and their croissants are just amazing and the smell goes on for blocks.

I have to hand it to you, I can’t live without bread.
We buy the Levine Locale at Orwashers. I love it toasted.
Mr L sometimes tries his hand at focaccia and we all indulge.

My rule of thumb is to have bread in the early morning or early afternoon so I have the whole rest of the day to burn it off. I try not to do bread or a heavy carb meal near my bedtime. Except for last night when I made shirin plov for dinner…

Yeah, I can’t live without candy/sweets so there you go. I love bread but its sweets that are more challenging for me but, sometimes (many times) these two wonderful worlds collide (e.g. cookies) and that’s where I also break the rule.
Good idea to eat bread in the morning only.

I haven’t cut out bread, but I generally buy Bread Alone sourdough – either the rye, French or whole wheat varieties. Somewhere in the back of my mind I keep thinking sourdough is better for the waist, etc. My weakness is a good almond croissant. So, so good.

Oh nooooo! I dread the idea of getting rid of bread from my diet. I’m still young enough that bread can be defeated by exercise, but someday that may no longer be true :(

Recently we moved 1.5 miles away from our previous place, so now the excellent croissants that were down the street from me are > 1 mi away. I think this is best. Also helpful is the fact that this shop with wonderful croissants has terrible service.

You smell great! Re. bread, if you have a Trader Joe’s near you, consider trying the “European Style Whole Grain” bread – it’s very dark, and really consists of whole grains only (rye mostly), it’s thinly sliced and very good with butter and probably just fine for the carb concerned.

Is that the really dense, moist stuff? I buy that kind of bread from the Polish grocery stores in my hood. Love the ones with pumpkin seeds. It’s definitely lower glycemic than regular bread.

Croissant day?! What is this sorcery?

My husband accidentally dropped (although flung would be a better word) my e-reader the night before last and irreparably damaged the screen. No worries, I said, and ordered another one (same model, refurbished with guarantee) from Kobo.

This morning Google News kindly informed me that the e-reader industry may grind to a halt soon because of the coronavirus and shipping issues out of Taiwan and China. Although it is VERY much a first-world problem and obviously people’s health comes first, I sincerely hope I’m not waiting weeks for a new reader ?

(Yes, I have a public library. It has unfortunately had a bedbug infestation at least once while I was borrowing physical books. Weeks of paranoia. So now I normally use the e-lending system to be safer).

Still nakie since showering last night but going to apply my Perfumarie blind sample or my Fragrance du Bois Oud Vert Intense sample from Luckyscent. Feeling the need to be colder than the weather today!

    Good morning,
If you are in Denver, I greatly recommend going to Panzano’s as they have the best croissants I have ever eaten in the USA.
Cloudy and cold weather in ATX today, my winter perfume is Youth Dew. I have always been a Lauder fan.
I hope you all have a lovely day.

We have a real French bakery here in San Diego county, it’s a bit of a drive from my house, but a local bookstore (also owned by a French woman) brings in a delivery every Saturday. Croissants aux amandes, miam miam!

I’m wearing Eau des Merveilles today because it smelled divine on someone else last week and it reminded me that I don’t need to wait for summer to wear it. It smells just as good in cold weather, it turns out.
I’ve been wearing Antonia (Puredistance) a bit more lately because I am noticing some evaporation in my decant. I see that others posted above about similar concerns. And yes, why is it that small dabber samples last for years while decants seem to evaporate faster even when sealed (sort of) with Parafilm?

    • Undina says:

Dab vials do not have sprayers, which are effectively small (?) holes in our Parafilm-proofed anti/evaporation defense system. There are some better quality sprayers that close better, but many are bad both at spraying and storing perfumes.

Ah so is the solution to parafim the spraying hole itself??

I don’t think it’s mostly from the sprayer, but more so from the threading in the screw top- especially in cheaper decant atomizers. In some of my decants I can see the juice color accumulating in the threading.

The juice does not only accumlate, but also leaks sometimes, even when the decant is sitting straight up.

Same here! These are upright decants I’m talking about! I also find the parafilm doesn’t help much ? I guess the moral of the story is either don’t buy decants or use them quickly.

    • Jalapeno says:

Definitely some timely discussion about decants here… I keep thinking about getting a few of samples I have used up.

I think the FdB is far more musk (on skin anyway). The other is Fleur de The Rose Bulgarie (talk about confusing!!). I think the FdtRB is a spicy/green rose… Never tried it but have heard it’s wonderful!

Woke up in Serge Lutens Arabie this morning. I think it was discontinued not to long ago. I am flirting with getting a backup bottle since I see a bottle for less than $60. My Amazon Prime Pantry order just arrived safe and sound. I switched over to no 22 edt but I was tempted to apply Diana but wasn’t going to chance it since I will be at work. The teeniest little bit of no 22 let’s me fly under the radar.

Ok, this is off topic, but an unelicited suggestion for your pup…if he needs a groom, you can look for a mobile groomer who grooms in their kitted up van. I used one when our pup was sick, and it was much easier on her. Also, there are groomers that will come to your house and groom your pup right there, while you watch them. They bring everything with them. Hope this helps!

Joining CM8 in Winter Woods today. Cold out there, and I promised myself I’d focus on some cleaning around here. Which means the poor new kitty will likely be scared by vacuum sounds, etc. C’est la vie.

I do wish I could enjoy a nice almond croissant today, but I made a smoothie instead. Tried something new, with cacao powder, peanut butter, banana, pineapple and various protein, chia and collagen powders. It was good, but not great. Will play around with the mixture in the future.

Was happy to receive a compliment on Beach Walk yesterday. Met up with a friend in Dumbo to get her help on using LinkedIn. We went to one of those private membership clubs. The views!! Stunning. And a lot of people in there quietly talking or working on laptops, etc. There’s a whole world of people paying about $300 a month to work and hang out in such surroundings. And they’re all around 30 years younger than me. As pleasant and lovely as it was, I like my neighborhood – where I feel comparatively young…. (and I was admonished for taking a photo of the view…a big no no.)

It was very comfortable and pleasant. I can see the value if one is self-employed or prefers having people around instead of working from home. Or, if comfortably retired and want to sit in pleasant surroundings with a gorgeous view while reading or something. If that were me, I’d be there every day…

This is a bad week for me to try Backward Day, since I need all the olfactory comfort I can get. I forgot to put something on this morning because I got out of bed super-late! But luckily, I have a decant of Trayee at work, so I’m in a nice, spicy hug.

Post office update! The local branch called me (they have my number?!) and apologized, then told me my package had accidentally ended up in a giant Google bin (we live about a mile from Google). They talked to whoever received it and that person will return the package to the post office, who will then mail it to me :) So HOORAY! I am very optimistic. She said I should have it by Friday, so please cross your fingers for me. I hope to be in a haze of Rose Jam all weekend, or at least until my fiance decides that’s a bit too much and makes me wash it off.

I’m in Frapin Caravelle Epicee. No points for me, this one is totally me. I love its warm spiciness, yet I only have a sample. Why have I not bought a bottle? How many bottles of perfume should I have / do I want? Ack. these questions are harder than “what should I wear today?”

The number of bottles to own is a very big question I ask myself often. At the moment it’s more than I should, less than I want to.

I’ve just got back from work feeling really exhausted. After a cup of Darjeeling and a large slice of homemade Plum & ginger cake,(gf) ( this recipe is in East, my new cookbook by Meera Sodha, it’s really nice)A couple of spritz’s of Iris Silver Mist, inspired by perfumelover67, and I’m feeling a lot more human. Now have sufficient energy to put the kids to bed and read to them.

Blue skies with a lot of wispy cirrus clouds in the sky today. I remember ages ago that my dad told me whenever a bunch of those cirrus clouds show up, it means that there will be a change in the weather soon. It’s actually a little chilly for me outside.

SOTD = back in L’Artisan Voleur de Roses, from the sample stash. I’m now considering getting a decant of this, but some of the stories about evaporating decants are giving me pause. Maybe multiple dabber samples of it instead?

You can get a decant, the important thing is a good quality atomizer and using teflon plumber’s tape around the threads before screwing the top on. Then parafilm around the neck where the spray top connects to the bottle. That’s your best hope, other than a FB.

Chiming in late – Oy vey! It be crazy around here!

SOTD = 4160Tuesdays Eau My Soul

I had no clue about the back story of this perfume. The notes were apparently crowd sourced, voted on and masterfully blended by Sarah McCartney. Overall, I would call this an amber that is musky, sweet and incensey. It’s very nice and hits the spot on a cold day.

I will link to the picture in a reply to my own comment because I don’t want to lose this text that I painstakingly finger tapped!

I was a bit mad at myself for totally missing both Pie Day and Chocolate Cake Day. Those are days I’d happily celebrate, and inadvertently do on many other days of the year. I got a box of croissants the other day, though, so I can still celebrate Croissant Day very late with a midnight snack. (lol)

Scent this evening is Dad’s Garden Lemon Tree body spray, with hopes that the sleeves of my hoodie hide my sins.

Earlier tonight I had a chicken lo mein TV dinner while Mom and Dad were at choir practice. Mom had *feelings*, and not happy ones, about the scent of the Dan Dan noodle TV dinner I had the other week. She had less of a reaction that way about the chicken lo mein TV dinner, as some of the scent had dissipated by the time they got home. Koyel had sent me cocoa salts (Thank you, Koyel!) and noted that they gave chicken something of a mole flavor. I’ve never tried anything with a mole flavor, but I take her word for it. At any rate, the cocoa salts improved the flavor of the chicken lo mein considerably. I’ll have to try them with chicken that’s less mixed with various other flavors, and see if the cocoa salts liven up what would otherwise be very bland baked chicken. :)

I suck as a perfumista these days. Well, actually I just suck at being a NST commenter, I almost always smell good haha. ??

I’ve worn L’Air du Desert Morocain, Cierge de Lune, Baiser de Russia, and Cedre Sambac is his week. All good stuff!

We had a great weekend in Palm Springs last weekend celebrating our birthdays and anniversary. It’s sure nice to lay by a pool and get a little vitamin D on a January day. My husband is always so fun, we really always have the best time together.

Tomorrow I’ll have to find a “clean” or “fresh” scent because those are pretty much opposite of what I generally reach for.

You smell wonderful and I love that you and your hubs have a great time together. That’s the best.
