Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, Lunar New Year 2020

Posted by Robin on 25 January 2020 247 Comments

We're welcoming the Year of the (Gold) Rat with our same old open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the last fragrance sample you thunked, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Note: the US Lunar New Year stamp for 2020 is 55 cents. "With blue as the predominant color — said to be one of the lucky colors for individuals born during the Year of the Rat — the rat mask in the stamp design incorporates elements with symbolic meaning. Several of the patterns were created with the style of Asian textiles and the circle in the center of the rat’s head represents the new moon on which the Lunar New Year begins. A pop of the very lucky color red ties the design in with other common celebratory decorations. Art director Antonio Alcalá designed the stamp with original artwork by Camille Chew."

SSS Winter Woods is my translation. Wow, that many days straight? I seem to be too fickle to manage more than two days in a row of anything.

Yes! Winter Woods. I am trying to keep my life simple and not in a sampling mood. It’s so wonderful and gets me compliments that I keep reaching for it.

I admire your dedication. I can hardly stand to wear the same thing two days in a row, like my brain is saying, “THAT old thing?” on the second day.

Ha! Well I tend to be feast or famine. I can sample dozens of fragrances a day for a week in a testing frenzy but then spend seven weeks in just one….

Must buy those stamps. I’m a sucker for stamps, and those are pretty as anything. Happy new year all. Blessings and prosperity to you.

Not what I intended, but it’s looking like staying inside is a wise thing today. Cold, blustery, rainy. Just removes all motivation to get out. (I was actually out very early today, but am now back inside…). Maybe I’ll finish some knitting projects…

Sampling Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud I don’t do much Oud generally. There’s a dustiness to it that doesn’t appeal. Will see how this develops and maybe check back in as it dries down….

JM Velvet Rose and Oud is a pretty, non-dusty oud. It lasts a good while too. I best liked the dry oil I used up pretty quickly.

I’m test driving new Diptyque, Eau Capitale. It is a very, very pretty rose chypre. I might want to add it to my collection.

Together with dad we’ve visited mum at the hispital. It’s been only 24 hours after the surgery but she seems well. Of course the leg hurts but she’s already started little walking today.

    Have a good weekend.

I’ve never seen Diptyque anywhere else at the Galleria. Possibly Sloan Hall, or is that just really high end stuff?
It might be at the Nordstrom up in the Woodlands. I rarely make it up there.

No, Sloan/Hall has cut way back on their perfumes. I think all they have now are the Carons. They have those big urns there. Well, maybe K-L will get the new Diptyque in sometime soon. Since I go by there often, I’ll check.

SOTM is Ummagumma for coffee and crossword puzzling. Then I plan to make more progress on painting my little home office. It’s a little over halfway done, but the parts left to do are the hard ones, like around the window frames and above some built-in cabinetry, which is why I’ve been procrastinating. Am hoping that saying it out loud (so to speak) to you all will give me the impetus to get in there and Get It Done.

If you get it done this weekend it will feel so great! Do you need to do prep, like taping or moving stuff? That is a pain. Maybe you can tell yourself that you will just do an hour and see how much can be done. Is there a podcast you like – maybe do a podcast-length stint?

Not done, but I made progress! Yes, I have to move furniture, and tape … and it’s taking two coats of primer because I’m going over chocolate brown walls. The brown paint came with the house – wouldn’t have been my choice. And whoever did the last paint job did a really slap-dash job, so there are paint drips all over the molding. Luckily the molding is painted white, so I’m covering the brown drips with primer, and once that dries I’ll do the rest of the taping to make nice sharp lines at the bottoms of the walls. Eventually we will hire someone to repaint all the trim – there is no way my poor old back would stand up to that. :)

Soon … very soon. Still have the bits near the ceiling and above the built-ins, but I think if I wait for the lower parts of the wall to be thoroughly dry I’ll be better able to steady myself on the ladder that is required to reach the high parts.

I am hoping I get this silly article I am writing today done quickly, and can start the book. Which of the Renault books have you liked best so far? We’re out of the GC today and hitting the road. Perfect time to visit; no bugs, no crowds, and minimal heat.

That being said, if your doing serious hiking or heading down into the canyon, shirtsleeves are all you’ll need. Only if you’re inactive or after dark will you need a coat. Parked anywhere I liked, no problem. Unimpeded views for miles. Perfect timing. Smell well this weekend! ✌?

Between getting re-settled in a new town and being sick all week, I feel like I’ve been on another planet. No frags for awhile. Today so far, wearing only my lotion bar, which is cedar/hazelnut from Lo Lo. I have come to love that thing — it’s really helping my skin adjust to this extremely dry climate, and my hands aren’t cracking anymore. At first I didn’t like the waxiness, but that quality isn’t apparent after application. I bought the bar from the maker in the vending hall at the Houston International Quilt Expo last fall, and I really liked her. I will be ordering more of her product online. I’m really jonesing for the frankincense bar. I am on a mission to reduce my plastic use, and I like the bars b/c they come in a refillable metal tin. I’m also using a Vunella shampoo bar that I bought b/c of an IG ad. It’s hard for me to find shampoo that I like. I have very fine hair and can’t stand anything that adds buildup, and this bar works really well for me. I suspect that Lush would be just as satisfactory for me, and cheaper.

In Bois Sacre (Arte Profumi) and smell amazing, if I may say so myself.

Had a small perfume dilemma this AM. I am not a regular peruser of eBay, but last night I wound up on one of those aimless window shopping journeys on eBay and Etsy… and probably clicked a few “watch this item” links… so this morning I had an email in my in box from one seller, making an offer on a new, sealed box, 100 ml, of
Volnay’s Brume d`Hiver. This price is amazing. But, I smelled this frag years ago and can barely remember it–I do remember liking it a lot, but that is all. So the price is really good, but I spent so much on perfume recently that plunking down another Benjamin for something I am not actively craving, feels reckless. So I wrote back and thanked the seller, but said no. What do you think?

I’m a sucker for a discount, but I’ve managed to curb that tendency a bit more over the years. I ask myself if I would buy it at full price – if the answer is no, then don’t buy it just for the deal.

I try to envision the bottle on the shelf with my other perfumes and think how I will feel about seeing it there. I just returned my Ambre Vanille because even though it was a great deal, it just didn’t belong.

Have you ever shopped on mercari (no affiliation)? I found a deal on there when I was searing for my Shalimar replacement but didn’t pull the trigger because I wasn’t sure about this website.

A person can end up with way too much stuff because of good prices. I have moved twice in the last 4 years, and have purged heavily each time, always mystified as to how I accumulate.

From the responses to your post, I gather you’ve taken a perfume hiatus? I’m just curious, because that’s what I did. I did it because I went into a Spartan mode and wanted to curb my spending. I believed my collection was more than I could use, and that I should focus on what I already had. My collection isn’t all that big, comparatively.

    We’re having a lovely day here, weather-wise. I think I’ll go for a walk in a bit.

Happy Lunar New Year! I decided to go look up my ‘year’ — apparently I am a rabbit. However, the Vietnamese calendar substitutes cat for rabbit, which I definitely prefer, so I’m sticking with ‘cat’ for me :)

Sampling today… currently, A Lab On Fire Hallucinogenic Pearl. Great name, but I have no idea what that has to do with scent, which is a mild leather.

I retrieved it from the balcony chest where I keep part of my growing collection also because the chest is well organized while the bottles inside the flat are in disarray at the moment, it’s my goal to put them in order asap but I always seem to be doing something else.

Showered this morning and thunked my bottle of AT Wowilla body oil. I was planning on wearing PHI after the comments yesterday, but there was a bit left in a small decant of Rose Omeyyade. In my head, I think of this one as Rose OMG since it’s so rich. PHI will have to wait for another day.

Need to bathe the pupster and make a pot of beans today. The Perfume Legends book by Michael Edwards was a Christmas present, and I need to crack it open! I finally found it last fall at a price I was willing to pay. When it arrived, I peeked inside….mistake! I was totally engrossed. But I handed it over to the hubs for safekeeping. ?

Beautiful quiet night with clear skies and stars sparkling brightly on a bed of black velvet. Times like this I wish I had my good camera with me to try and capture it.

Sampled Zoologist Hyrax yesterday and it INTENSE. Did not dislike, but I don’t know that I feel comfortable bringing that into other people’s space, sometimes I was like “whoa I need a break myself.” What a roller coaster of a scent.

Recovering today with Santa Maria Novella Acqua di Colonia Russa. Leather and civet and musk, but in a super fresh and soft classic format. It’s my go-to reset scent for my nose.

I know exactly how you feel! Our cat usually behaves, but once in a while he decides midnight that he’s bored and wants our attention. And since he normally isn’t allowed into the bedroom, he starts meowing and banging on the door. I have my methods of calming him down but usually the next day is hard for me.

We went to an exhibition about the Aztecs, which was really good and then tried a Szechuan restaurant. The food was really good and seemed authentic. I had pork belly with bell peppers in a aromatic oil, the boyfriend tried beef and beefs innards as a cold salad.
I wore Moulin Rouge for the day, now Vintage Shalimar EdT for the evening.

We went to Disneyworld Animal Kingdom. In the Africa or Asia section, they were burning a lovely, slightly floral incense— not at all headshop-y. I asked if they sold it and they said no but said Epcot did. I should have asked to see the box.

Anyone have any recs? I see that Epcot sells Morning Star. I know some of you use Nippon.

Scent for morning church: Kiss Me Intense. I do enjoy this one and may actually go through the bottle.

Agnès the kitty woke me up this morning by coming into the bedroom and meowing very loudly. Of course, she ran as soon as I called out to her. Sometime later when I sat up, she sat just outside our bedroom door and carried on quite the conversation…from a distance. We have this feeling that if she gets over her skittishness, she’ll be quite the calico diva personality.

Oh, and enabler pin to Robin. I actually went online and bought the lunar new year stamps, as well as the state and county fair ones.

Greetings and happy New Year to all. I was meh about the stamps until I got one on a letter and the colors won me over. Random thought: did anyone see the new Febreze Air Wood – with OUD? I somehow think there is something to “unpack” there. I have an ad and a coupon in my Sunday paper. May run out at lunch Monday to see if Kroger has it though I’ve never used Febreze and don’t think I’d want my house to smell like oud. The coupon magazine heading is “Smells Like Style.” Perfume-wise, I got all completist with Champs-Elysees. The parfum is a delight. I already had and loved the edt. Honestly, the Too Much flankers don’t thrill but now I have those lovely bottles. *Blushes and sighs over budget.*

I haven’t sampled much of the line. VS begins with violet pastilles that morph into earthy woody violet leaf. Something about the dry down reminds me of Gray Flannel but I could be wrong. I haven’t smelled GF in many years.

Same here and we probably should Neroli Blanc is great in all its concentrations. You make me interested in VS, its reminding you of Grey Flannel makes sense as it’s a pretty masculine violet on my skin too.

Happy New Year everyone! SOTD is JM’s English Pear and Freesia. I have a tiny bottle that I received thru a freebiemeet and I am hoarding the last drops of it because this is turning out to be one of my favorite scents. It’s pretty and springtime-y and it makes me happy when I get a whiff of it. And to think I once wasn’t too crazy about freesia, lol.

I like this perfume as well. Why are you hoarding it? Are you on a strict “no buy”? Because not only it’s still in production and available in 3 sizes, but on eBay you can get another 9 ml bottle for under $20.

Have any of you had experience with Roxana Illuminated Perfume? The store is here in Santa Fe. I have been looking at Roxana’s website, and it appears that a person must make an appointment ($25 for 15 minutes) to visit. Consultations are considerably more. Prices look high, but it’s all handcrafted botanical perfume. She offers classes, too. I’m thinking I’ll make an appointment after my sinus infection is completely gone.

I tried a few of her scents several years ago. At that time, I think she had an Etsy shop where I ordered my samples. No loves among those that I tried. I was looking for a solid perfume because I wanted one of those solid perfume lockets. I think she sold those as well during that time. Not sure now. Have fun!

Busy weekend this weekend, with a vet trip yesterday and grocery shopping today. Spooky kitty voiced her displeasure about the trip very loudly the entire trip to the vet. She might have also been complaining about the heavy rain, too… I don’t think she has ever been in a cat carrier in that kind of weather before.

Many, many thanks for the birthday wishes! I had steak for dinner today and yesterday, so that has been taken care of. ?? The chocolate stash has also been replenished, so I’ve had some lovely treats in the past 24 hours.

SsOTWeekend = commando on Saturday for the vet appointment, and Relique d’Amour EdP today. And my first sample thunk of the year!

PS. Still stunned by the news on Kobe Bryant. It’s a big deal in the Philadelphia/southern New Jersey area.
