Tuesday scent of the day 1/14

Posted by Robin on 14 January 2020 171 Comments

It's Tuesday and Ratification Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am commando for another travel day, and one that clearly did not go as planned: I am sorry I am so late! No tea yet, but I'm on my second latte.

Reminder: on 1/17, wear a fragrance with immortelle, if you have one. Suggested by Hamamelis.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Kiiro yellow porcelain teapot from Dammann Frères ("This harmonious teapot is made of Japanese porcelain and fitted with a stainless-steel mesh filter and a bamboo handle.") is €50.

I’m in TDC Bois d’ Iris, I haven’t worn this one in a awhile. It’s very nice but I think I prefer VCA. I will have to do a side by side comparison one of these days.

      You smell great!
I havent worn Bois d’Iris by tdc in a long time either.

I am vaguely familiar with the VCA. I remember trying it on my skin in a department store in middle of summer, but it was a bit too sweet for that time of year….

I think they are similar but the VCA feels smoother and more powdery, which is probably why I love it.

The VCA is more powdery and lasts longer on skin than TDC. I like and wear both, but prefer the VCA.

My teapot has a bamboo handle as well, but is glass. I like to see the color of the tea I am drinking.

I had a busy morning..but won’t share the boring details.

Tea this morning was Chai and I had dal for breakfast..

Thumbing through the WSJ while listening to the Gladiator soundtrack, the music is adding another commentary to the news of the day, to say the least 😉

SOTD is Shalimar body powder, a few puffs on my neck and elbows.

You smelled wonderful today. In regards to you liking to see your tea, I only drink coffee out of cups that are white on the inside. I like to see the coffee and if the inside of the cup is dark then the coffee just blends in. It’s a quirk I have that my husband jokes me about regularly.

Hello and hope the day improves! I am testing Hyde, which is giving me different smells depending on how far away from it I am. With my nose to my skin it has a bitterness I like very much, but when I’m just catching the sillage I would swear somebody was wearing vintage Tabu! Neither of these are bad things, of course. I was timid with application – I’ll have to give it a bigger dose and see if I can get the growl to come out farther.

      Bitterness how?

I realize this is several serious steps away, but if you eventually buy a bottle of Hyde and decide to split some, I’d like to call dibs.

Bitter like kind of a barky bitterness? Probably the birch tar. I don’t think this is going to be a purchase for me, it’s in the same mood family as T.Rex for me and I like T.Rex better… but if a heavier wearing changes my mind, I will let you know!

      Ciao OaklandF-
I was thinking of you last night as I am still reading The Persian Boy by Renault. This is my 3rd book by her, and this one, thus far is my favorite. ( I am pretty sure I am falling in love with Bagoas, the Persian eunuch who becomes the lover of Alexander.) There is one part of the book where Alexander tells Bagoas the greek myth of Achilles and Patroclus and poor young Bagoas begins to weep over the fate of the two men, and I, myself, found my eyes wet with tears! No one writes historical fiction like Mary Renault.
“Is he weeping?” said the one with the softest heart.” ― Mary Renault
      That’s quite a poignant quote!

I am so happy her books are giving you pleasure! I wish I could accept the credit you give me for recommending her–but I just had dim memories of loving her books decades ago, and they fit your criteria when you were asking for recommendations. My to-read pile has grown to preposterous proportions so I am reluctant to add anything to it–but your enthusiasm is inspiring me to revisit Renault. I am not sure I ever read The Persian Boy, so perhaps that should be the one on my list.

Someone on here or maybe another perfume blog also recommended the The Charioteer by her. I will have to give it a look..

I am half way through the Persian Boy, and oh, my heart, I love this book so far.

I find it quite unusual to have a male lead who is feminine and submissive, compared to her other characters in The Last of the Wine and The King Must Die.

I also love how Renault re-creates an ancient world, and I without a doubt, can stay in this world forever. The Public Library has other plans for me however, late fees if I don’t hurry along…

Trying to get back to a normal rhythm post-holidays….maybe I’ll get there this week….

Wearing Etat Libre d’Orange Vraie Blond, which is my January Scentbird pick this month. I really like it….but it’s very short lived on my skin. It was completely gone by lunch. Anyhoo, it’s an aldehyde champagne/peach/patchouli sweet scent, and it’s good stuff. Just be prepared to reapply…. 🙂

Mitsouko today…saving my one Immortelle fragrance for Friday. Was in Bengale Rouge yesterday but neglected to post. I did read posts late in the day (like almost into next day late…)

Tired. Stayed up too late watching football and post-game. They need to start those things earlier and show fewer commercials. It really is ridiculous. Next year, I’m gonna take the advice to record the game and only start watching 90 minutes after it starts, so I can fast-forward thru commercials….

I need to clean up. I really need to vacuum but last time I did the new kitty disappeared for multiple hours. I hate scaring her again…

I’m actually having to adjust to watching sports so early here on Pacific time. When I was back east, like you said, they started late and it was always a late evening and groggy day the next day. The game (I’m guessing which game you’re speaking of) started at 5:00 here yesterday! Barely enough time to get home and get some snacks together haha!

I tried Good Girl Gone Bad this morning. Nice enough, but rather fleeting and very safe. To participate in the CP I’m wearing L’Homme Sage by Divine which according to Fragrantica has some immortelle in it.
Also test driving Rose et Cuir. Still intrigued, although not quite smitten yet.

I’m accidentally joining the CP today in Kyoto, which contains immortelle according to Fragrantica. Who knew? I definitely can’t smell it.
My mother got sick last week and Friday we put her in the hospital with pneumonia, she’s been SO sick. To visit, it’s required to put on a gown, mask and gloves so yesterday was the first time I could visit; this afternoon, she’s being transferred to a rehab facility for 3 weeks. Being really old stinks.

Hello all! Robin, I hope you are safe!

I’m in OG Yohji Homme today. I haven’t worn it in a long time but I was making a friend a decant. Decided life is too short and took it for a spin today.

Speaking of decants, a regular of mine came in last week smelling incredible. So I asked him what we was wearing. It honestly smelled like Shalimar to me, but he answered Caron Pour Une Homme. Just lovely. It turns out his mother worked for Caron. (In weird coincidence, I was wearing vintage Parfum Sacre that I had found that day!)

Well last night he gave me a generous decant from his bottle. I hope it will smell as good on me as it did him!

I’m not a fan of immortelle, but according to fragrantica, it’s in a whole raft of fragrances. TF Plum Japonais? Cuir Beluga? Kyoto?? Hmmm. I’ll have to wear these and Pay Attention.

I’m in two Carthusia samples, Mediterraneo and Via Camerelle. Have to pay attention to them because they disappear quickly! They are nice, though, and part of a sample haul from the excellent sniffing expedition with Calypso yesterday. ?

Smelling glorious in Papillon Anubis while I work from home today. Another perfume with immortelle, though it’s such a well-blended composition that I can’t pick it out. Like springpansy, I live on a hill, a very steep one that’s icy today. That plus the forecast of heavier snowfall between 3-5 led me to not attempt the commute today. Really hoping the weather clears up so I can go in tomorrow!

You are smelling glorious! I would never have guessed about the immortel. Wondering if perfumers use it to give perfumes some sweetness, but with a bit of a savory vibe.

I could see that with immortelle. It is definitely a mid-base note, and Eden Botanicals says it can been used to “round off and bouquet a composition that may need life and naturalness.” I’ve worked with the raw material, and it’s intensely thick and sticky and lasts forever.

I went into work this morning wearing Paris-Riviera, but then had to come back to Brooklyn because my hubs is having dental surgery and is getting sedated, so I have to bring him home. His appt was for 12:30 but was still waiting in a crowded waiting room when I got there at one.
So I took a walk around and went to some of my favorite shops around here (Williamsburg). I’m sprayed up with all sorts of stuff:
Kitten edt from Catbird Jewelry which is a cuddly, powdery little thing with a slight waxy lipstick note (bought it for my niece who turns 26 this Monday and is having a party on Sunday).
My Summer in Italy from same line- green Neroli and honey. Nice!
Happy to see they have Astier de Villatte back in stock. I went there in summer determined to buy Eau Chic, but they had no stock of the line. I have that on one hand and Commune de Paris on the other (Shalimar-esque). I refrained from buying ?

Trying out a couple of the new Celine. Wearing Saint Germain Des Prés, petitgrain and neroli with light crystalline sugar and powder. Like. The other one I tested yesterday is La Peau Nue. It starts out smelling like a doll’s head, in the best way then dries down to a cool, powdery iris not unlike the two La Pausas.

As nancyleandros already mentioned, we had such great fun having lunch and then sniffing together yesterday! It’s always a surprise when someone else finds something nice that you might not even have tried. For instance, she got me to try and I really liked CdG Odeur 53, which I must definitely revisit. She took numerous notes and impressed me with her restraint and analytical acumen and preparation (reading up on lines in advance, etc.). I, by contrast, found one I loved and jumped on it to buy it! It’s Chay Mimosa Flower, a line it’s almost impossible to find anything about. It is from LA and seems to have had put out only two scents and now disappeared. I found an incomplete and interrupted description that said this:
“A complex and slightly spiced unisex floral perfume. Bright resinous citrus of mimosa with notes of suede, creamy coconut, indian bakul, sandalwood, and french…”. Hmmm, French what, I wonder? I don’t know what Bakul smells like either. I definitely get mimosa and coconut, along with a buttery note. It’s subtle but quite enveloping and I’m still happy with it.

I tried to post a few times today but it didn’t happen. I guess the third time is the charm. It wasn’t planned, but I wore a few scents today. We had company at work today so I thought Cuir de Lancome would be perfect. I wasn’t happy after spraying so I added a spritz of KMT. Ah, that’s better. Then, I remembered that I had new samples. I decided that a single spray of Jovoy Remember Me on the back of my hand probably wouldn’t matter. Well, it did matter. IT IS STRONG! A single spray overpowered my other scents. Plus, I didn’t love it. Oh well. I hope everyone had a good day.

How I used to love Cuir de Lancome, but I seem to be a bit fickle perfume-wise these days. It still works fine as an office scent, pleasant and low-key, but it will be gone one day forever and that’s all right…

I really like CdL normally. I hope it is my nose that’s off today and not my bottle. The sueded leather note seemed really bitter this morning and I wasn’t getting the pretty floral notes that soften the leather.

Oof, hate when that happens. I usually go for my pinky when spraying something new. One of the perfumes I sprayed on today overpowered everything else I sprayed and I didn’t love it either (it was from Boyd’s of Texas called High Desert and smelled like turpentine for a good while).

SOTD = Armani Prive Iris Celadon

I participated in a split and then soon after I purchased a full bottle!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B7UcrKch1VK/?igshid=9u5ofd9qq0pn

In other news, I park at a parking deck and many people like to park nose out to make it easier and safer to leave because people are always in a hurry to get to their cars to go home and backing out is stressful. Anyway, this one car took 10 tries to back into a space, meanwhile cars were lining up to go past it. I say if you can’t back in to a space after 3 tries, at most, give up and park nose in! The driver could have made all of us late for the train (it ended up being ok because I gave myself plenty of time and the train was slightly late).
