Wednesday scent of the day 1/8

Posted by Robin on 8 January 2020 263 Comments

It's Hump Day and David Bowie's (may he RIP) birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm (running late) in Ormonde Jayne Frangipani.

Reminder: on 1/10, wear a fragrance by Ormonde Jayne, Olivier Durbano, Odin New York or Olfactive Studio, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter O.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In Lorenzo Villoresi’s Musk today. Again. I’ve been reaching for it for over a week now. It’s just so darned cozy!

I woke up super sleepy this morning and didn’t make it to the gym.
Sipping Chai this morning in a few puffs of Shalimar powder and a spray of perfume.
Donning a mustard colored cloche hat today.

    Have a fragrant day everyone.

Eau de Cough Drop. Called off work today due to a bug I picked up from a kind co-worker who apparently has never heard “cover your cough,” or “If you’re sick, don’t go to work and make your patients and co-workers ill.” Sheesh.

T-Rex is also sick, due to dietary indiscretions in the desert, and is now on ABT and probiotics. She’s still not understanding cause and effect…

Despite the crud, we enjoyed our journey into the desert, even though I just sat around in the sun like the old lady that I am. No hiking or biking, because I was/am just exhausted.

I’m going to try a very light, non-nausea inducing perfume later today. Maybe Omnia or Un Bois Vanille. Planning on a nap or two, since the doggo tap, tap, tapped me on the head four times during the night to go out, which, combined with the cough, ensured I got zero sleep.?

Hope everyone is feeling better than we do. I’m quite sure you all smell MUCH better, too! ?

I’m one of those terrible co-workers too. We are so understaffed that I did go in to work, in spite of my cold. I do practice cover my cough though, hoping that it helps. Hope you get over it quickly.

Silly T-Rex; my dog was just the same that way. Dogs, they just love all the filthy stuff.

Yeah, I get peeved about people coming in sick and working around really vulnerable people. But, there’s a terrible culture of looking down on people who call in sick, even though you are entitled to use sick time. Administration is guilty of this guilt-inducing culture.

Exactly correct on the issue with looking down on folks who call in sick. We have a total of 6 sick day allowance for the year. One of my co-workers had a supervisor call her out for being ‘unreliable’ when she used her sick days to look after her Mom when the mom was back home from the hospital, or when my friend was legitimately sick.

Bvlgari Spendida Magnolia Sensuel and currently drinking a second cup of Wild Pu-erh tea.

Yesterday I wore Lancome Oranges Bigarades and I was trying on scarves at the hospital boutique. I took my Mom to get some bloodwork done. I ended up buying a scarf, and the cashier said while ringing up my bill “This smells so good, what is it?” She could smell my Lancome fragrance. :) I told her, then we started discussing different perfumes.

Definitely not what I think of as a sambac jasmine smell. My ‘Maid of Orleans’ sambac jasmine has been blooming and blooming. Each flower lasts only a day once it opens, but it’s had bunches of flowers and buds.

I agree that the Sampaquita perfume is pretty, but I know that some people like a more indolic jasmine fragrance — “dirtier,” I think they might say. A pretty and relatively clean “white flowers” fragrance is okay for me, but personally I could be all right with something a little more quirky or twisty.

Can’t wear anything scented until I get home from the cancer centre. I had my final appointment with the radiation oncologist yesterday, who declared dramatically, “you are cured!” Her accent makes her sound like Natasha of the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon, if anyone is old enough to remember that, and somehow it sounds threatening rather than joyful. However, I will take it to be great news.

I tried to wear DSH’s Vers la Voule Etoilee, but grabbed her Vanilla Bourbon by mistake. This is nice, but too much tobacco, and not all that long lasting, so when it faded at work, I applied considered (small) amount of Barkhane, so I am nicely incensed with a rosy edge! I will wear the DSH I intended to wear today, tomorrow.

In English the name of this perfume for tomorrow is Toward the Starry Vault, and I am thinking there is a FB of this rich sweetish chypre in my future, it is like Mitsouko’s well behaved but none the less a chip off the old block modern granddaughter! I like it a lot, and do not see it discussed much. For those here who know and share my enjoyment of perfumes with depth and heft, you might seek this out and let me know what you think.

    SotD was Rahele.

Its rainy but pretty warm for time of year.
12 degrees Celsius (thats 53,6 Fahrenheit according to Google ☺️)

Geesz when I was a little girl, we used to skate outside this time of year. I remember my mother picking us up from school bringing our skates and then we’d skate nearby on the ponds.
Or we’d drive to Kinderdijk (famous for a row of iconic old windmills) and skate on the canal there.

I wonder if my niece and nephewes will ever be able to experience winter fun like that in our country ??
We havent had ice skating winters in years.

      Rahele is very, very pretty!

It’s oddly hot for this time of year. I grew up in the east of the Netherlands so we didn’t have a lot of water to skate on, I do however remember winters being quite a bit colder.

In the east there is a slight chance of hills ? so sleighing was maybe part of the fun?

Btw I am wearing Mon Parfum Cheri par Camille right now, its wonderful, this time I pick up more plum,

Somehow I feel the need to slip into a long black dress and pick mushrooms in the forest haha. Yeah its witchy/gothic, but in a good way.

I grew up near Enschede so the inclines were barely noticeable. I loved it there but I know that I wasn’t well located in the skating department.

I adore MPCPC, it is very witchy indeed. I don’t wear dresses but maybe a very long black coat would have the same effect.

I’m in Dusita Le Douceur de Siam which feels fresh, humid, and lush.
I’m really preoccupied today with the fate of my feral colony, you guys. Looks like they’re prepping the lot for a new tenant- the owner mentioned something about ConEd using it for generators a little while back. I’m so worried I’ll show up one day to find their shelters thrown out and the cats missing. I’m pretty sure at least one of them will not be able to survive that scenario. The whole uncertainty of it is making me really sad. Sigh.

I actually just sent an email to Neighborhood Cats, the org where I got my TNR certification, asking for advice. They can also help to try and locate a new colony for them. The problem of proper colony relocation is that they need to be crated for a few weeks in the new space so they acclimate to the new environment, which is very difficult in the winter. Urban life for ferals is really rough because there’s so little public space to use.

Thanks lj. Like I told Calypso, there’s so little outdoor space that isn’t privately owned, so that creates a problem for relocation. I know other colony caregivers have run into similar issues around here, especially with real estate developers buying up large, unused spaces and building on them. City life is rough for these animals. I wish I could buy a big barn in the country somewhere…

I didn’t realize the heart break that would come with this work when I started out. I can handle the illness and death from illness part, actually. It’s the intolerant people who create intentional obstacles that make it really difficult. Some colonies have seen some pretty cruel behavior from people, including shelter destruction and rat poison ?

People are usually the problem. I wish I had an answer for cats. Is there no shelter that would be willing to trap, spay/neuter, and then find them a safer place to live? Feral cats can be adopted, right? I imagine the process would be prolonged, but animals are so adaptable…

They’re all neutered already. Shelters don’t take ferals because they can’t adopt out unfriendly cats and it would lead to loads of cats lingering in cages for years. There’s a pretty big feral cat problem in NYC and it’s hard even to get a friendly stray cat into a shelter here. The advice I’ve been given by the pros so far is to look for a relocation option or to continue working on the lot owner to arouse some sympathy.

I got out my OJ Discovery Set and am trying on two scents that I’ve pretty much passed over before–the “masculine” ones Zizan and Isfarkand. In general I’m not one to stick to gender categories among perfumes, but in previous tries, I’d felt these were just not for me. I still feel that about Isfarkand, which I find actually quite unpleasant. I would swear it has a strong liquorice note, but I’m not sure why, since that’s not listed. It may just be the very strong cedar-pepper aspect. It’s going to get scrubbed in my shower soon and not re-sprayed. Zizan is kind of similar to it actually but a lot more gentle and wearable (for me). I still prefer her florals overall, with Woman at the top–not that it’s a floral, but I like its combination of green-woody-spicy floral, and find it quite unusual and distinctive. It’s gotten me compliments, too.

In other news, I got my new glasses (or ordered them) and am excited! I am lucky that my university has an excellent optometry school where we get a free annual eye exam and a 30% discount on new glasses. That’s quite a chunk given how expensive frames and lenses are nowadays. I got some sort of dark orange-red ones. It turns out the prescription isn’t much different from my old one but I decided to get a new pair as a back up and fashion alternative! The downside of going to the OPTO school is that you have a student, albeit an advanced one supervised by a doctor, and the whole process takes forever!–I was there almost 3 hours all told. With my eyes all dilated and feeling rather tired at the end, I didn’t have the energy to make my planned lemon risotto tonight, but that’s on tap for this evening, along with grilled shrimp! Yum yum!

Oh no, it’s awful to have eye or vision problems. Luckily my eyes are pretty healthy, although I’m told I do have mild cataracts. This explains my issues of driving at night, which is scary because I experience so much glare. Mostly I avoid it, especially if it’s raining. Good luck.

I’d forgotten how much I enjoy this odd scent. Smells like fun in a bottle. ??

I”m close to a feeling of “ugh” with my food choices. ?

My osteo doctor suggested I increase protein intake each day. Anyone have a favorite food hack to share?

Are you a non-meat eater? I try not to eat carbs during the day because I get serious blood sugar crashes, so I rely on protein and eat a lot of eggs, and nuts are my staple during the day (I save my sweets and carbs for night time because the fatigue they cause actually are a plus at bedtime!).
I’ve also recently rediscovered cottage cheese after ignoring for many years. It’s good with so many things, but my favorite is with tomatoes and black pepper ?

thank you for the good ideas, Elisa! I love to eat almonds every day, other nuts too, so I feel good about adding more to my meals. Will definitely look for more dairy protein options too. Cottage cheese is a great one, and I used to eat Greek yogurt so I’ll have to get that going agin.

In the past I ate less meat, sometimes very little or none, for a variety of reasons, mostly because it was hard on my tummy, lol. ;)

These days I’ve realized I need to eat fish, poultry, and eggs for my health. I’m stepping up my consumption, also adding red meat from time to time. I eat eggs most days for breakfast, usually with a little oatmeal, just a couple tablespoons.

And I’m like you, I do feel better if I keep carbs low until later in the day because they do make me sleepy!

Vanille d’Iris again for me today because I’m just that lazy. Not my favorite, but it is pleasant and cozy. First time back at Weight Watchers for weigh in since before Christmas (since I go on Wednesdays, my place was closed for Christmas and New Year, and I just didn’t bother to go another day). At least I didn’t gain….a very minor loss. Which I’ll take during the holiday season.

Dinner out tonight at a place I’ve never been. I’m pondering mussels from the menu they have online. At least I have my voice back…a bit husky but not a whisper.

    SOTD = Chris Rusak Io

I’m glad I wore this today…I needed zen.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B7EWdDZhrxn/?igshid=9694gxa5m45f

This morning, the guy who sat next to me had his morning cut out, down to an alarm to wake him up a bit before the train entered the tunnel. No issues with that, of course. He then proceeded to intently / intensely mine for gold. As soon as he extracted something, he rolled it up into a ball and flicked it, thank God, in the direction of the floor to his left (he had the window seat). Now imagine a rinse and repeat of this cycle 4-5x before the train arrived at the destination. To say I was disgusted by this is an understatement! Other than this, the commute is fine…it’s a good walk, good exercise and I am getting things down to how long before the published time of a train I need to leave the office and get there at least 10 minutes before departure and allow for variables such as being stopped at a light (goal: no more than 4x at 15 seconds each, which really translates to being slowed down by about 90 seconds).

I’m finally trying Vanira Moorea (Berdoues) which smells very much like Le Couvent des Minimes Eau de Missions to me. I no longer have the latter which I liked quite a bit for a while, but after I gave my decant away I didn’t miss it. I think this one sampling of VM will suffice, and I’ll pop the remnants of my vial into the donate pile. Onward!

Crazy weather for me today… bright and sunny one minute; snowing sideways the next! ⛄? Then back to bright and sunny. But getting COLD tonight! We’ve been spoiled by unseasonably warm weather lately, so winter is finally making an appearance.

SOTD = Abel Pink Iris EdP, from the sample stash and a fab NSTer. This scent was a little quiet and did not stand up to the cold and windy weather. Time to set it aside for spring.

Apparently winter is coming to me this weekend with freezing rain and snow. I’ve already given myself permission to call in to work Saturday night. But fingers crossed it all just evaporates in thin air. I wore Coco Noir today, and now I’m in TF Metallique. If I didn’t have so much else to wear, I would wear this one alot. I really like the vanilla in it. It’s synthetic smelling, but I find it interesting.

I have to go in on it flex day off for 4 hours mandatory o/t. This is to help a department catch up due to them all being away on holidays over Christmas.
