Thursday scent of the day 12/26

Posted by Robin on 26 December 2019 268 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! Also, Boxing Day, Candy Cane Day, the first day of Kwanzaa, the second day of Christmas, and the fifth night of Hanukkah. Happy Birthday to David Sedaris! What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Fendi Theorema, of course. And I'm quite behind on reading comments, although I hope to catch up by the end of the day.

Reminder: on 12/27 we're doing best of 2019...wear one of your favorite fragrance releases of 2019.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Dyptique Oud Palao for what looks to be a dreadful commute here in Los Angeles. For those enjoying the day off, sleep in late for me!

Oh, it is. When you set up job interviews there, the very first thing they ask is which freeway you’ll be taking … and then they offer very helpful advice about how long it will take.

I almost threw up when I tried this. I kept trying every time I saw it but the 3rd try was the worst so I crossed it off my list. More for you!

I can tell you right now
Emeraude and Shalimar which I wore in the 1970s and 1980s and Clinique Wrappings which I wore when it was first released in 1990 and then for the entire decade. Next week I will be in vintage no 22 EDT which has a beautiful Incense note. I also wore that in the 70s, 80s and 90s before it became an exclusive and the price went up tenfold ?

Also in Shalimar but in extrait de parfum about 10 tot 15 years old. It’s a wonderfully filthy and comforting smoky vanilla.

        ??
        Shalimar quadruplets!!

Vintage Shalimar really is filthy, isn’t it? Hard to believe that I wore it when I was only 12, a gift from my childhood friend’s mother who hated it but knew I loved perfume and bequeathed me her bottle

What a wonderful gift! I started my road to perfumistahood way more cautiously. My first proper perfume was Anais Anais, quickly followed by Paris, YSL.

And I only tried my first Guerlain in my forties, I think. But, better late than never. Shalimar feels very lived in and as a result very comforting. Clean, however, it is not. 😉

Spent Christmas Eve in PHI Rose Kandahar and yesterday in Chanel no 5 edt. I was poking around Andy Tauer’s website yesterday and today for no reason and found that Une Rose Vermeille eas out of stock. I sent an email asking if it were discontinued but haven’t heard anything yet. I hope it hasn’t been and it’s always sad when a perfume gets discontinued. I am not sure what I will wear for work yet but I might wear Une Rose Chypree today.

Happy Boxing Day, etc.! In Halfeti today, which is great but also more importantly one of the few samples I have at my mother’s house. Christmas was spent mostly at a family friend’s house. She hosted a wonderful party (very small by Bengali standards, maybe 18 people?) full of champagne and excellent food and presents. Christmas morning started out very rocky, though; sending my love to everyone else who is dealing with loss this holiday season.

My best friend, who has happily driven 15 year old Toyotas with hundreds of thousands of miles on them for as long as I have known her, bought herself a brand new Mercedes about a month ago after a horrible divorce and just such a tough year. It bummed me out how hard it was for her not to apologize for her “extravagance”. I say, if the purchase won’t break you and it makes you happy, then do it with a bow!

I’m in Fleur de Peau for a back to work Thursday? Having Christmas in the middle of the week has completely thrown me off and it feels like a Monday today. Guess it’ll be a short week though since tomorrow is Friday already, lol.
We had a very nice Christmas and ate way too much good food. My kids were all happy with their gifts.? My parents joined us for Christmas Eve and went home yesterday. My husband, me and the kids went to Star Wars last night just as we’ve done in 2017 and 2015. I know the critics are having a lot to say but I was happy with how it ended. My 9 year old self who saw the original in the theater way back in 1977 *mini spoiler alert!* was happy that all my favorite characters made an appearance.

Ha! The two minis wanted to see it yesterday! Followed by Chinese food! I was shocked at how busy it was at the movie theater.
Eldest mini is working FIVE 12 hour shifts in a row at night this week…. she’s a bit out of sorts as it’s her first holiday alone. Last one ends tonight so we are hoping to have her home tomorrow or Saturday. She is crossing her fingers that next year with a bit more seniority she won’t be forced to work ??

Was that by choice or that’s how they scheduled her? I’m pretty sure that might not be legal and she should speak with someone about that, especially a union rep if they are unionized.

No. That’s how they scheduled her. No union at her place. She was going to say something to her supervisor but she is out of FMA so the hubs and I told her to just ride it out. She did get extra money for working the holiday though…a bit of a consolation! And she doesn’t have to work New year’s Eve which she is happy about.

Oof, that makes me angry ? She really should say something to whoever is the covering supervisor. They shouldn’t get away with that and it’s dangerous for patient care. People who work a beyond a 40 hour week tend to make more mistakes and burn out quickly. They’re totally taking advantage of a newbie so that other senior people can have a nice stretch off over the holiday and if no says anything, they’ll just keep doing it.

I wish I’d had the courage to speak up when I was a young RN. It’s hard, especially with fear of retaliation of some sort. It took me till my late 30s to be able to advocate for myself.

Morning, everyone. Hope everyone’s Christmas was nice, if you celebrate. It’s been a while since I’ve checked in, I came down with a fever last week and only started feeling like a person again yesterday afternoon. At least we don’t really do much for the holiday, so I wasn’t derailing any plans by laying on the couch and binging Black Sails most of the weekend.

Now that I can smell I am wearing Zoologist Moth.

For this week’s CP I wore Terry de Gunzburg Be Mine yesterday and am wearing Goutal Etoile d’Une Nuit. I like both, although I am not sure I will get more once I finish the samples.

Be Mine is a fruity leather scent. Not too sweet, not too heavy. Good for a damp cold day.

Etoile d’Une Nuit is a very realistic lipstick scent.

It is sweet and creamy. I have just done a side by side comparison to Lipstick on, and while I get a lot of iris from Lipstick on, I cannot really find iris in Etoile. Despite the notes, to me it smells like fruity, creamy rose/violet combination. It is nice, but Lipstick Rose and Misia are still my favorites. But until I can get to the bottom shelf where my decants are stored I would happily wear this sample.

Thank you for asking. Slow. The doctor says it will take 6-8 months to fully heal the fracture, which means there are still 2-4 months to go. I walk at least now. Fifteen minutes walk daily, and I hope I will be able to do more in the coming months.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Holiday season? I know I am!
Despite the fact that the weather is bad so together with my family we just sit at home all day but it’s fine. We are watching TV, eating great food and drinking wine.
We started watching new Witcher on Netflix and it’s really good.

Today I thunked my bottle of Tauer Phi Une Rose de Kandahar. It’s a beautiful rose and I thought I might even buy it again but it seems to be not available anymore. Tauer website is out of stock and a perfumery in Warsaw also doesn’t have it on their website.

It could be possible. IFRA 49 is going to be published in January but all companiest always get like almost 2 years transition period to adapt to new regulations.

Saw a mention of Nomade as a 2019 scent and remembered I had a sample. One spritz. It’s certainly interesting. I don’t think it’s me though. I got kind of a fecal thing at first, which has faded away. If it fades away, I’ll likely spray on Mitsouko later.

Last night was the first time in quite a few months where I was uncomfortably full. Not from dinner but dessert. Chocolate babka that I just kept eating while laying on a friend’s couch as we watched that British baking show….

Still shy. She was up in the couch overnight but scurried to her under-table spot when I got up. She did take a brief stroll into the bedroom and then went back under her table. She’s now laying in her cat carrier snoozing.

She and our cat seem to be not terribly interested in each other, which is fine.

We adopted out one of our friendlier colony cats and she stayed under the bed for a couple of months, but would be “caught” hanging out at night in other parts of the apt and with their other cat.

For me personally, it is probably best if the flan runs out after 3 days, or if the vermouth runs out, or both, or I will have to go buy new pants 🙂

But if the flan runs out after only 1 day, that is an emergency and you have to make another, which is why my son & my mother had to drive to another town on Christmas morning to find a store that still had heavy cream.

Commando today as I’ve come down with some viral thing or other ??. And to make it worse, I had probably the worst reflux last night that I’ve ever had. My throat and chest are still burning and the cough I have isn’t helping. Didn’t even eat all that much yesterday :/ So working from home today, but probably will call out tomorrow.
We did have a nice, mellow Christmas at the in-law’s yesterday, with only a few minutes of restrained resentment from my MIL towards my FIL who didn’t get her a gift, even though she showed him something specific out of a catalogue and asked him to get it. Kind of jerky, but not surprising.

Copper again. I noticed a hint of violet coming through yesterday – to add to the smoke, galbanum, tobacco, spice mix.
I only ‘discovered’ David Sedaris this year when I picked up a book from a ‘lilliput library’ on the side of the road. It was Calypso and I really enjoyed it. For some reason I had him mixed up in my memory/mind with the writer who wrote Running with Scissors ( I had seen that film) and so never felt the desire to read him. But I am glad I have found him now. I have had a run of good books recently.
Still gloomy weather and quiet here. A massive pot of turkey soup on the stove…the gift that keeps on giving.

Kanuka, if you like podcasts, you can listen to Santaland Diaries. It is how Sedaris first became well known, and I still remember nearly wetting my pants laughing in the car when I heard it.

I have not, thanks, although since the New Yorker prints a lot of his essays now before he collects them in a book, I suspect I’ve read 80% of it. But have just put it on hold at the library in dead tree form 🙂

Bruno Fazzolari Corpse Reviver, from a sample. I like it but don’t need it. And as I head into my year long no-buy, I’m giving myself one last chance to purchase a bottle if there is something I can’t live without. So far, there isn’t anything!

It has a boozy, woody quality, a brief tinge of chocolate. I don’t find it very animalic on my skin (apparently its predecessor was quite animalic). There is allegedly vanilla in there but I’m not smelling it. For me it’s mostly whiskey and leathery woods.

Isn’t that a wonderful feeling trying things, liking them, but not enough to desire a full bottle?
I have been doing a lot of testing during my staycation and am also coming to the realization that I can indeed live without. A lot of what I am smelling is pleasant but I feel as though I have smelled it before.

I will allow others to buy me something for my birthday during the no-buy so I’m going to keep going through the samples I already have (too many!) and if something stands out I’ll put it on my birthday wishlist!

I threw the luckyscent Black Friday sample pack in my most recent order and I have just now realized what a mistake that was.

I’m in Fort and Manle’s Meraki today and I really love it! It’s floral with a hint of peaches but in an overripe way that smells a little of decomposition rather than pure sugar in a way that reminds me of Bat in its opening notes. Aaaaand so obviously it’s a limited edition that runs 300 usd for 50ml and comes with an absolutely nonsensical backstory about imitating a perfume that the perfumer owns but has never opened. My taste is tragically expensive.

Bertie Wooster is still alive and not acting sick, so either the steroids are masking everything lymphoma-related or he has Irritable Bowel Disease. I’m thinking it’s the latter. It’s still early morning here, and I’m still perfume-free as I contemplate the joy of a day where I have nothing specific I need to do.
My beloved and I spent just a couple of days with my mother, which was lovely. We had lunch with my mother’s cousin and some of her family. I can never remember how to calculate degrees of cousinship, but I know it’s getting quite distant when you get to your mother’s cousin’s great grandchildren!
I wore Myrrhe et Délires on Christmas Day, it’s got a Christmas connection and it wouldn’t overpower the food, of which there was a lot 🙂

Came back yesterday from visiting the boyfriends parents, then my mother. Thank God we are home again! Although my mother was nicer than usual and did not complain a bit!
As we do not give gifts for Christmas we just had to cook and eat (Schnitzel at this parents, lentils with spätzle and tongue at my mothers, Pho with my brother at the Vietnamese restaurant).
Now wearing some sprays of Ambre de Merveilles, sadly it fades very fast on me.

I forget how much I enjoy this pretty little thing. When I wear it I always feel happier. I should sort out my perfume bottles and samples and make a Pretty Little Thing (PLT) group for Iris Ukiyoe and some others that feel the same way. Insolence EdT would go there and others too . . hmmmm.

Time for yoga! I’ve slacked off the past few days and my body is telling me to get moving. Funny how my wonky shoulder (injured in a fall many years ago) bothers me only when I don’t exercise enough.

The rains here were torrential last night. Everything is calm and quiet now. I love the day after a big holiday. And am feeling grateful for the lengthening days. A little more daylight each day always makes me feel good.

I’m trying some JD perfume Woman Singularity from a generous NST-Er. It’s a soliflore of some white flower, maybe jasmine, with a kind of bubble gum aspect. Hmmm.

I had a nice time at Mom’s place yesterday afternoon opening gifts and making phone calls. We got a nice selfie too: https://www.instagram.com/p/B6gw-9VpTHY/?igshid=rjp8xqp9sh3h. By now I’ve learned that it’s best to aim at quality time for an hour or two, because after that she becomes confused and gets tired. And well, I get tired too. My brother sent me some very fancy chocolate truffles from a little company in Green Bay. Yum!

Hope others are well and enjoying the holiday. A decade is ending, and that prompts reflection.

I’m sadly back at work today and tired. Hoping this afternoon latte I’m drinking will help. Wearing the gorgeous, vintage-smelling St. Clair Eve, another 2019 favorite. I’d be hard pressed to pick a favorite between Eve and Pandora, but Eve is a little more office friendly.

Eve wears a little closer to my skin than Pandora and doesn’t have that dark growl that the added labdanum and opoponax give to Pandora.

I don’t think it reminds me of No. 19. I haven’t yet put my finger on which vintage perfume(s) I’m reminded of, but it definitely smells like it was made in a different era.

Happy to have scored two perfumes for Christmas (my carefully coached husband complied)— Le Cri and Promenade des Anglais. Guerlain packages the Les Parisiennes perfumes in the most extravagant boxes. I need to figure out what to do with mine… Question for those who have purchased perfumes sold with bulb sprayers. Do you keep the bulb sprayer attached, or do you generally store with the glass stopper? If you do the latter, how do you store the bulb?

I hate bulb sprayers so I actually don’t even screw them on; instead, I either keep the regular atomizer on, or, if not included, I decant to another atomizer.

Nice picks! Never see that Guerlain mentioned, but I liked that one, too. It’s just easy and pretty from my memory of it.
I’ve only had one perfume with a bulb which I left on and the perfume evaporated completely! It was something I neglected, and it was an inexpensive, on-sale thing from Anthroplogie, so I don’t miss it. I’d not leave the bulb on, myself.

I had quite the busy past 2 days of get together. Over the years, as family members dwindle, the remaining ones have tended to huddle more as I’ve seen since Thanksgiving. Also, the cousins tend to get together as often as we can to continue our parents’ wish that we continue to see each other and celebrate with or without an occasion.

I’m leaving for Mexico City this Saturday so I will be in panic mode tomorrow. Wish me luck. My brain is thinking I still have one week before Christmas and now it’s over.

It’s been a busy couple of days.
It was wonderful but I am glad to get back to regular programming.
I had lunch with a good friend today and caught up. It was lovely and relaxing.

Lovely and relaxing sounds like a perfect day.
I wish Chergui worked for me. It should, but just doesn’t. I would love to smell it on someone else.
