Starring Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr., Ann Bancroft, Charles Durning, and a host of others, it’s a gut busting movie that makes me feel warm, cozy, and at home.

I was just thinking about Robert Downey Jr and how much I loved him in Ally McBeal.The holiday episode with him singing River just touched my heart I will look for Home For the Holidays.
He sings in this one too! This was filmed at the height of his addiction issues, and he stated that Jodie Foster, who produced and directed the film, and was fully aware of this, wrote him a gentle letter asking him to get help.

Do you remember that commercial years ago with Kelly LeBrock where she says ” Don’t hate me because I am beautiful” ?? My mantra has always been ” don’t hate me because I am skinny”. It’s a struggle keeping weight on when I am stressed. I think the anxiety revs up my metabolism.
I think Wrappings can only be bought online and only during the holidays. Also, it only comes in that gift pack of 25 oz fragrance and tube of lotion. When it first debuted in 1990 I bought a large bottle. Back then it was sold in various sizes and I want to say year round. It was my holiday signature scent for many years. The original had oakmoss….the real deal…so it was denser. But I still love the current formulation and am happy to be reaquainted with it

I have to get a bone density scan this morning and then I have to brave the grocery store crowds. I’m wearing Origins Ginger Essence and trying to talk myself out of buying Ginger Piccante because how many ginger fragrances does a person need? (This is a rhetorical question.)
You smell spicy!! I haven’t thought about Ginger Essence is a long time, but when it first debuted I wore it a lot!! Beautiful.
They are very similar – I went for the Ginger Piccante in the summer. I couldn’t resist it and I only had a rollerball of Origins. Roger et Gallet Gingembre is also much like the two, but that line is getting more difficult to find in North America.
Rhetorical indeed! I’ve wondered variously how many leather or iris or amber scents one “needs” in one’s collection, to no avail. There will always come another.
I have a bit of a fragrance conundrum I could use help with — I have an Arpege (new, not vintage) bottle on which the sprayer is totally stuck. I tried cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and running it under warm water, but it won’t depress no matter how hard I press on it. The bottle still has plenty of perfume in it, so that’s a bummer. Any tips?
Maybe try to warm it up a bit, or try to somehow oil it? Maybe it will slide up then?
Does it twist at all? I would try twisting a couple of revolutions and then try pulling UP to see if that jogs it loose.
I’ve tried twisting it around, taking it apart and cleaning it… no dice. It seems to be the part of the sprayer that’s permanently attached to the bottle that’s stuck. I may have to get someone stronger than me to just force it. Maybe that would clear out the clogging perfume, or whatever the issue is.
Oh dear. Someone needs to invent an un-crimper to allow us to transfer scents from bottles with balky sprayers without risking broken glass all over our bathrooms.
Merry Christmas! My dad is working his last day at his place of work before he retired. After 43 years, he deserves it. I got all my stocking stuffer from Harry and David and spent $63 and $25 more than I should have while waiting for my dogs’ gifts to arrive today. Just waiting for the holiday to be over due to the fact that I am tired. Wearing a dab of Amouage Lyric while I head to work in a little bit.
Lyric always makes the day better….don’t let your exhausted state keep you from enjoying the moments of the day. It all goes very quickly, so savor while you can.

Wearing Lustre from Hiram Green. It’s a really nice rose. Quite dark, but not as gothic as say, Eau de Protection.
Wow, I thought Lustre is very bright and summery. Arbole is way darker for me.
Well it is lot lighter than a lot of other roses that I know. I’d qualify Un Zest, Ecume, Sa Majesté and Rose Ikebana as light roses

I got overwhelmed by Wrappings this weekend. I love it, but I abused it and I have to take a break from it now. Wearing Yardley Iris to give my nose some rest. Very simple, comfy and fleeting scent. Just what I need today.

I’ve never seen Yardley perfume here, just the soaps. I just bought a shea and buttermilk one.
Their soaps are pretty nice. I usually have the oatmeal & almond ones because they work as very soft exfoliators. My skin is very sensitive to regular exfoliators so I can’t use them.
The lavender soap is great too.everyone in the house loves it
I have Yardley Iris (I bet you’re surprised)..lol. It is a great re-set scent. I’ve even layered it C&E Iris lotion and it seems to amp it up a bit.

I am currently making croissants from scratch with my 15 yr old nephew!! Both butter and chocolate. It’s an all day process but we’re having a blast. We’ll have them Christmas morning. He loves to cook and bake so it’s a fun time with him and he is thrilled to learn how to make something “hard” LOL
I didn’t put on any scent today but we accidentally broke a bottle of almond extract (fell out of the cupboard reaching for the yeast) and now we BOTH smell like a cookie and the kitchen is scented too.
Oh well, it could have been worse! We could have broken the bottle of onion juice!

Ha, if you can make bread you can make croissants. They’re not hard, just putzy. You need to make the dough, the butter block and do the folding &rolling, cutting and forming one day. Bake the day you want to enjoy. It’s a lot of steps that each take a few minutes and then time in the refrigerator. You can do it!
SOTD is Memo Paris Italian leather. Leather, vanilla and tomato leaf to make it light and fresh. But still great longevity. A new love….
In the mean time struggling to help my dear cat recover from a severe urinary infection. Today he seemed to realize he just had to be put in his basket to go see the vet. Resistance was futile.
Also work is taking over my days off. Pffff.

It’s a real drag, especially coming back. Google maps always says ~5 hours, but with traffic, a snow storm somewhere, and bathroom stops, it always takes us that long.

I am testing out Lalique Nilang today, which was a blind buy that came with my recent travel sprays. Look at that sentence structure, people. I write “came with,” as if some Fragrancenet elf just stuck an extra bottle of perfume in with my sample order, unbeknownst to lucky little me.
It’s a fruity patchouli, for those interested in such things. It goes on sweet and juicy, with a little bit of an exotic flower vibe. I’ve had good luck with Lalique – they have a couple of scents that are quite good, and some that don’t get much attention (Perles, for example). Melon-haters, run in the other direction. Anybody who likes fruit, heady flowers and a patchouli anchor might want to check out this cheap thrill.
You got a good elf…speaking of which, Wegmans had St. Patrick’s Day decors out already (in a low key way but still…ummm maybe Valentine’s Day first?)

How sad. Canes?! This seems like a high theft year. Our mail/packages are delivered inside our building which is locked, and this year multiple packages of mine, and other neighbors, have arrived ripped open, which leads me to conclude it’s happening within the USPS and UPS systems. Fortunately for me, I had nothing of value, so they just opened packages and didn’t take anything (I guess they don’t want vitamins and cat food!). This is the 1st year in this building I remember having this happen ?

My co-worker made butter tarts for me. They are like pecan pie (without the pecans): sinfully sweet and awesome! I can’t make pie-crust to save my life so I really appreciate it.
I make a delicious all butter pie crust with my grandmother’s butter tart recipe, except I add some pecans because my husband loves them so much.
It’s taking serious effort to have a productive work day. I’m working from home tomorrow since we close at 2, and I’m counting down the hours until I’m back home.
Today I’m in a favorite of 2019, L’Artisan Le Chant de Camargue. It smells like rice powder and the soft musk of face cream. It actually reminds me of the old B&BW Rice Flower & Shea.
I made a list of what I recall trying of 2019 releases, and it’s a pretty short list! I just take my time smelling the new releases.
Also, after losing an eBay auction this morning, I still have the urge to make a perfume purchase. Can I make it through the day?!

I’m trying out Tauer 01 La Maroc Pour Femme and it’s beautiful. What a stunning scent. It’s giving me the oddest perfume deja vu—I feel like I smelled this long ago in my childhood somewhere although that’s impossible. I’m feeling the Christmas stress today so I’m glad I ended up sampling something so stunning, it’s helping calm me down every time I stop to sniff my wrist

If you decide you like it enough to purchase, do it in 2020, as jasmine will be further restricted by IFRA in 2021 and it will no doubt have to be reformulated, it has a ton of jasmine (the max currently allowed I believe). It already had to be reformulated once several years ago when they restricted jasmine.

I used to run away from cumin but now have built up a tolerance. Still not a note I gravitate towards.
It’s good in Rose 31. Not too much, and very well blended.

I believe she was a street rescue, since she has the clipped ear. I know she was with the adoption place a number of months. Fosters loved her. She loves scritches on the face and chin and leaned into my hand. She’s definitely shy. She will take patience. But she’ll eventually realize she’s safe and comfortable.

I was very restrained with 2 spritzes before lunch with a neighbor. At 36% perfume oil, it packs a punch but it is so well blended you don’t know what hit you ?. I like it quite a bit; however, it is not perfume-phobic family safe so I will wear it when I know I won’t be near them.

I am bringing the ultimate lazy person’s dish to a Christmas Eve party – my couscous dish (boil water, throw in the couscous, remove from heat, cover the pot for 5 minutes, then fluff the grains). Flavoring is diner’s choice – olive, dried cranberry, goat cheese crumble with sun dried tomato, bite size dry salami and crispy onions (from a can).

Couscous can be so tasty, and it is really easy to make! It’s been too long since I’ve made a couple of my favorite couscous dishes.
Posting late today! I made it over into Philadelphia and the Christmas Village in Love Park. Gorgeous weather for it, too… sunny and in the low 50’s. ? It seems that distilleries are a thing now in PA; at least two of them were present in the Philly Makers Marketplace in Dilworth Plaza. Then did a TON of walking with Mr. Jalapeno to get a bit more shopping done. We came home a little sore and a lot hungry, so ordered pizza. Life is pretty good today.

My day wasn’t as planned but was ok. Last night a nice former student wrote me that he was in town and did I want to have brunch today. I said yes and he came over and met my cats. He also has cats and mine loved him. Interesting guy who has now earned his M.A. in History and works both as a journalist in San Antonio and a community college lecturer. That was fun, then I had a follow-up about my hearing aids, which had to be toned down a little, then took my cat for an emergency vet visit because he’s been listless and not eating. This is the same cat who had dental surgery recently. He got more meds and fluids and should be ok. My SOTD was Santal Nobile. (Spellcheck wants that to be Santa!) I’m feeling guilty about not visiting Mom for a few days, but I’ll definitely go tomorrow. I have to wrap some gifts and make my annual cookies!

Yes it does! He is a South Asian Muslim, and his thesis was a study of Black Muslims in Houston. Apparently there is some friction there and he hopes to be able to make inroads and build bridges. It’s fascinating work, really.

I just sampled 14 Sultan Pasha Attars and loved them all . I enjoy blending essential oils and his attars smell like the most sublime e.o.blends out there. They are polished and last a long time. I know I didn’t quite answer your question but I couldn’t say which was my favorite ?

Here is what I tried- Aurum D’Ankor, Nectare, Jardin D’Borneo Gardenia, Arne Sombre, Reve Narcotique, Claire de Lune, Ocean of Flowers, Pure Incense, Nancun Kodo, Incense Royale, Inferno, Cafe Ambre Noire, Carnival de Havana and Encens Chypre.
They were all great in my opinion so I think whatever you order you will probably enjoy if you enjoy naturals and attars

Bedtime last night: I was trying for soothing. I put Crabtree & Evelyn Lavender hand cream on my hands, then dabbed some SL Encens et Lavande on my wrists. That is a big scent, or so I thought last night. Also it was smokier than I remembered, but that was okay. It was soothing enough that I didn’t have trouble going to sleep.
Perfect! We stayed up too late last night so anything soothing sounds good to me.

Thanks, Jalapeno. I’ve been feeling like I’m fighting back a sinus infection all day. I felt similar on Saturday, so hopefully I feel better tomorrow like I did on Sunday. I’ve had some tea this evening (caffeine free) and plan to go to bed early.
Christmas morning here and it is gloomy and drizzly and very quiet, except for the birds calling from the trees. I am not sure what our plans for the day are …. Sometimes on christmas we walk up on the hill where I take the dogs but then wriggle through a fence into the restricted area where there is a big quarry and we stand on the edge of the earthworks and gaze into the huge crater. There is something kind of mesmerising about a big cavity cut into a hill (and on Christmas there are no workers around )….the abyss and all that. There is a turkey that I will roast at some point, and then strawberries and cream.

I wore Tolu this morning, and this afternoon I was going to go with Brin Reglisse, but the Reglisse sample made me think of my recent 1000 Flowers order (a couple of weeks ago), and it occurred to me that I had not yet checked the mail today. Reader, you know my heart leapt when I opened the mailbox and saw the package bearing international labeling. I am now awash in Reglisse Noire. I smell marvelous, and feel good.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all NST’ers! I’m relaxing in Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol Lexington Avenue, warm, spicy/sweet -I love the cardamom and creme brûlée notes – and listening to a delightful Christmas Eve folk music special from a local college radio station. Actually, a combo of folk and some jazz, songs I’ve never heard before, and different takes on traditional carols – a wonderful change from the usual Christmas playlist. One of the best musical programs I’ve heard in a long time.
Earlier tonight we had a wonderful modern take on a traditional Polish Christmas Eve supper (my heritage). I made mushroom barley soup with various fresh mushrooms as well as dried Polish mushrooms, lots of pierogi, several kinds of smoked fish, and other foods and ended with my favorite dessert, Cioci Flo’s kolaczki, that I bake every year. Before the meal we always begin with the traditional Christmas wafer, opłatki, one of the most beloved traditions dating back to the 10th century https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_wafer.
Tomorrow I’ll enjoy the orange peel goodness of Elixir des Merveilles and whatever my dear son and his family prepare for dinner – it’s their turn and I get to relax and just enjoy everyone’s company!

Had a lovely evening with friends last night at beautiful lessons and carols services and then back home for ham, scalloped potatoes and green bean casserole. I think my husband thought he was making food for a small army…tons of leftovers. We had also bought a beautiful Buche de Noël, which was delicious. We all settled in and watched Meet Me in St. Louis together. I was wearing a layering of Gourmand Coquin and Ta’if.
The new girl is tucked up under the table atop a plastic container box. I have discovered she purrs when I give her head and chin scratches. My guess is she’d be more willing to explore if it weren’t for our other cat. We will let her take it as slow as she likes…. I need to move a chair so that I can more easily sit on the floor and chat with her while giving her skritches.

Thank you! I really couldn’t decide on a scent *at all* for a while, so I’m glad inspiration finally struck and I chose Lyric because it worked its magic very well.
Wearing Copper again. It seems to be a perfume in two parts. Part one brings to mind a woman in Chanel 19 blowing smoke rings…galbanum with enough cigarette smoke added to actually make you think you have entered a room where someone is smoking.this lasts for about 20 minutes and then the perfume begins to remind me of SL Bapteme de Feu ( a bit) but with more tobacco ( pipe tobacco in a pouch) than gunpowder. Sweet and a tad spicy but close to the skin. The galbanum remains but also sweetens a littel, almost a hint or iris. Apart from the initial 20 minutes it doesn’t really project but is lovely on the skin. Iwoukd be interested to see if it is different in the heat…but our weather is kind of cool (15 degrees). I don’t notice anything I would describe as “metallic” but the opening definitely has a spark of energy…a zap.

Happy Christmas, Kanuka! I empathize with the prospect of dry turkey leftovers. Even the juiciest of turkeys is not my favorite – it’s like 20 pounds of boiled chicken breast.
Over here, I’m trying out a new recipe (a bit of a risk, to be sure) for myself and a couple of friends – Hyderabadi Chicken Biryani (made with thighs, because dark meat).
Turkey leftovers at Thanksgiving convinced me that we would be doing something different for Xmas. Too much for too long.
Copper sounds fascinating. Re the turkey leftovers — we often make paninis with them, layering turkey, the cranberry chutney I make, and stuffing, between slices of rosemary bread brushed with olive oil. Or my daughter makes a layered meat pie with the same innards, having learned how to make one from the Great British Baking Show. Yum!

I don’t know if I could face 4 days of turkey leftovers—moist or dry. I need copious amounts of gravy by Day 2 alone, so…. Good luck!?

Merry Christmas NSTers! We left the wintery woods and found some sunshine for a nice combo hike/bike today. Pretty chilly and windy, just enough to be invigorating but not uncomfortable.
Short 3 mile hike and then a 4.5 mile bike ride to tire out T-Rex. Felt good to be back on the bike again even though my hands were frozen a la Jack London’s To Build Fire.
I’m in SSS Winter Woods today, T-Rex is passed out, and I’m about to make some delish pancakes. Hope everyone has a great day today! ??

Another gorgeous early winter day here, with bright sunshine and temps right around 50 degrees F. It’s just me and Mr. Jalapeno today… our families live in other parts of the US. I’ve texted my brother and talked with my mom on the phone.
Still waiting for the pulled pork to finish cooking. Luckily, we have some tasty side dishes to enjoy while we wait.
SOTD = Andy Tauer’s Au Coeur du Desert, from the sample stash. I went with what moved me today and have enjoyed the little wafts of scent that have drifted up.
Jalapeno, the weather was gorgeous here too! I even opened the windows for a bit.
The nice weather definitely made cooking the pulled pork easier… Mr. Jalapeno was in a T-shirt most of the time.

Scent of Christmas day is the new DSH for Scent Trunk, December 2019. I bought the 5ml travel spray, and it arrived a couple nights ago. It’s a gorgeous animalic, wintery, dark, boozy rose. It’s gorgeous and is a last minute entry into faves of 2019.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah, NSTers who celebrate those! Family and I spent a lovely Christmas Eve and Christmas Day together. SOCE (scent of Christmas Eve) for church was SSS’ Amber Incense — lots of frankincense, but I applied lightly. Nuit de Noel came out later in the evening. Today I wore ELDO’s Like This, with its cozy gingerbread note. Feeling quite proud of the Madeira sauce with truffles that I made to go with a ribeye roast for mid afternoon dinner.
