Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, Pumpkin Day 2019

Posted by Robin on 26 October 2019 206 Comments

The weekend is here! We're celebrating Pumpkin Day (on Saturday) and John Cleese's birthday (on Sunday) with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite fragrance to wear on Halloween, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

After a week away, it’s mostly going to be chores for me. Boo. Why can’t they do anything while I’m gone?? Nobody so much as sorted the mail.

I once sent a card to my cousin that had a picture of a 1950s housewife on the the front. She was wearing a dress from that era and heels. Inside that caption read “Without me, you’ll all die”. I think sarcasm helps in these situations. ?

What a beautiful pumpkin photo you’ve found Robin, so lovely.

I’m wearing PHI Une Rose de Kandahar from Andy Tauer. I think I can only wear it 2 or 3 more times until the bottle will be empty. What am I going to do then?

On general thought, apparently this is the last relatively warm weekend and as of Monday a new front will enter Poland bringing much colder air masses. Gotta pack something warm for a business trip I have next Tuesday-Wednesday.

We had a sharp transition this week from warm weather (90s) to chilly weather (50s)! I was not at all prepared and had to look to find shoes, socks, and sweaters! Plus, suddenly switch from air conditioning to heat.

The weekend, at last! One week closer to retirement :) I can’t wait, work has been such madness I don’t even have time to look at NST some days. THE HORROR!

Gotta go out and batten down the hatches before the wind arrives tonight… and before the power gets cut. It’ll probably be out for days, yay. Back to the third world for us.

Sampling today, what will it be? I may just stick my hand in the grab bag and try whatever I grab. I’ve had a few winners recently… will have some things to confess to Donatella.

I adore pumpkins and pumpkin fields and used to take many pictures of them when I lived in western Massachusetts. But here’s a photo I really love that I took here in Houston at a big church pumpkin sale. (I don’t know the little boy.) https://www.flickr.com/photos/94283635@N00/258164529/in/album-72157594309124010/
And in fact last night I made a delicious recipe with roast pumpkin in it!! I’ll post a link to a photo of that soon.

I’m wearing Mitsouko edt today, which is in my top three desert island scents. I had a question about new niche perfume companies. I’ve discovered a few I didn’t know about – Rogue, Art Meets Art, Solstice Scents and Alkemia (perfume oils), and Chris Rusak. Can anyone suggest any others?

I love pumpkin soup at this time of year, so you inspire me to make some soon, Robin. For Halloween I plan to wear one from my small collection of special Halloween BPAL scents.
I was as usual volunteering at the library today and picked Prada l’Eau Ambree as a discreet but still interesting perfume, I wear it at this time of year and in winter too, so it had been a while, it has a very cheerful citrus opening but the drydown is lovely too, a firm favorite by now I think.

Maangchi (on YouTube) has a recipe like that, and she uses a little bit of black rice to turn the whole pilaf purple. I’ve never made it but her recipes are usually very solid.

Weather here is quite dreary but still in the 50’s so I can’t complain. Temps will be plummeting this coming week. ?

I’m in Kalemat today and enjoying the warm, cozy tobacco cloud I’m in. I haven’t worn this in quite a while, not sure why. Love the bottle as well, which really works with all our fall leaves right now.

Good question! Most towns I’ve been to have self service dog wash sinks, usually inside a building attached to self service car washes. I thought it odd when I first stumbled on one, but they are so handy because they have a big “sink”’with attached sprayer, temp adjustment, shampoo, and blow drier. Makes washing the dog super easy. ?

I’m wearing Passage d’Enfer on what I expect to be one of the last hot days of the year. We are moving to our house tomorrow, so I’ve packed away all my perfumes except for my little decant of PdE. It’ll be my only perfume until I manage to unpack :) And in accordance (kind of) with today’s photo, we had acorn squash soup for lunch, which is a lot like pumpkin soup, right?

My husband is on a business trip so I have the little house to myself which is very rare and I’m enjoying every minute. It’s pouring rain and blustery cold today and there’s no college football on, I’ve got a 90s playlist blasting and the cat is helping me clean out my closet. Taquitoes and beer for dinner, not good homemade ones but Jose Ole out of the freezer, a guilty pleasure. Wearing Memoirs of a Trespasser again. Enjoy your day, all ??

I always think I’m going to love having my house to myself when Mr. G goes out of town, and I do for about a day, or maybe a day and a half, and then I start noticing that I miss the big lug and the noise and near-chaos he creates … much against prediction … and then I’m always happy to have him back in the house again. Much to my surprise. :)

Have you tried anything by Floraiku? I never heard of them, so I thought I’d ask the person here who has her finger on the pulse of the perfume world! I was smitten by the lovely bottles when I was perusing the Twisted Lily site the other day. The price, not so much much, but still curious about the actual perfume housed in those lovely bottles…

I’ve only sniffed 3-4 of them, but found them overpriced and the packaging clunky to use. They’re pretty to look at, but handling them they were a bit awkward to manipulate and didn’t seem that robust. Nothing I smelled really excited me, but they’re by Memo and most of the Memos don’t excite me either.

I got to smell four of the Hermeticas which arrived at Etiket the week before I left Montreal, unfortunately they didn’t have the two I was most interested in, the vanilla and the patchouli scents, nor did they have Sandalsun. Will ask for more samples on my next Twisted Lily order. The four they had at Etiket were not impressive.

I agree with cazaubon’s assessment of Floraiku. The packaging is exquisite. The atomizer cap doubles as the body of the travel spray…extremely pretty. That said, the perfumes were all meh. I requested 2 samples just to be polite and it never hurts to ask (and this is why I end up with tons of samples).

Well, I did end up having a glass of wine with dinner — a delicious Pinot Blanc from my favorite Oregon wineries, Brigadoon. It was a big treat because I’m not imbibing very often these days. I just can’t keep the weight off otherwise. So this means I must wear Botrytis only on “wine okay” days!

Popped into Ulta for mascara and spritzed myself with Mon Guerlain and the new Chloé L’eau. Both were relative successes. I thought I hated Mon Guerlain, but it feels pretty and more lavender-focused this time. I wonder what changed? The Chloé has a big hit of grapefruit that gives way to a fresh rose. Reminding me of some JCE grapefruit-rose combos, so I like it!

It was Chanel No. 19 EDP for me today, for a haircut appointment and a drive through a couple of my favorite neighborhoods for fall color, and not very much else at all. ? Mr. G and I considered going out for cocktails, but after going outside for a moment to look at the sunset we decided to get the fleece jackets out and stay in (we are not at all acclimated to cooler temps yet) and have cocktails at home. (We have nearly a full bar setup at home. Yes, we might be lushes.) Anyway, it was a lovely day all around, and I’m very happy to be alive and able to enjoy perfumes and autumn and the feel of freshly cut hair.

I’m starting to play around with my perfumes more. At first I was in a very serious “collecting” mode, probably because I quickly came to know that I liked the older perfumes and there seemed to be a dwindling supply. The newer ones were either heavy on the ambroxan and Iso E Super (that I’m really sensitive to) or just sweet, floral opening notes and then nothing. I’m finally enjoying just smelling stuff. Made my own ylang ylang body cream and spritzed some Fidji on top (I think Aurora said it had a nice ylang note). Then last night I layered Yatagan onto LÉau d’Ambre Extreme for a home made Ambre Sultan. Still prefer Yatagan on top of a musk, though.

Commando yesterday. Beverage in the evening was hot cocoa. It’s getting to be suitable weather for that. Today’s breakfast beverages were Numi’s Breakfast Blend for tea and mango squash drink to accompany breakfast. I need to make more bottles of decaf iced tea to get me through the day.

Scent this morning: L’Artisan Oeillet Sauvage. Doesn’t smell too wild to me, but I’m likely congested or dried out. It was mentioned in the splitmeet. So far I’ve done a month’s worth of a “no-buy” on perfume. I’ve gotten a lot of e-books, though! I doubt I’ll last another two months. And definitely not, as Mom would prefer, “Forever.” lol

Wearing Lyric this morning and decided that the Chanel travel sets will have to wait. Until after Christmas. Ulta has a really good Urban Decay lipstick sale going on and I had a 20% one item thing to use. I went a little overboard and did a little Christmas shopping. Then Bath and Body Works had a sale on their aromatherapy line and a free candle promo yesterday but kept myself in check with that. I could swing that Chanel travel set but I think it would be better to wait. I will use my Epic or Memoir bath stuff today.

Wow. The winds are howling outside. It is sunny and beautiful and tree branches are flying. I can hear things banging into the roof. I keep thinking how terrifying these winds must be for folks closer to the fires. Our cats are completely flipped out. They younger one is fighting phantoms and racing under furniture. I’m considering maybe Joy edt is the calming antidote, or an amber frag.

We are in charge of our neighbor’s pets for a few days and I just sent my daughter over to put everyone back inside – it’s pretty windy but the backyards usually stay fairly calm, but still…

Gov Newsom just declared statewide state of emergency. I hope it helps get more resources to the fires stat.

I feel better knowing where all my chickens (kitties and kiddies!) are when things look sideways— good to get your neighbor’s pets inside.

Yeah… I don’t really know what that declaration of emergency does. Rest assured it isn’t needed in order to activate all the state’s fire resources… they are always ‘on call’. Resources were being shifted days ago. And Cal Fire always has the ability to request out of state resources. Politicians are not part of their process :)

I think it makes them eligible to request FEMA funds.

Thankfully the hot dry Santa Ana weather stopped today, what a relief. Loving the cool beach humidity again. Four days to relax, then the stressful trip up to SF to visit my parents for 4 days. I hate these trips but can’t avoid them if I want to stay in their good graces. I plan to bring a lot of gourmand scents with me in an effort to remain zen. Speaking of which, wearing Profumum Sorriso today.

Yesterday’s sotd was copious amounts of Chanel Paris-Venise for a lunch date. Today I’m wearing some vintage My Sin edt.

I rescued a couple of partial vintage bottles on evil bay to meet me in FLA in a few weeks. Halston edt, Oscar de la Renta edt and Farouche. Hopefully they are going to be smelling like what’s in my memory bank.

The sun is out today, but I’m at work and very grumpy! People are just getting on my nerves. I’m thunking the last of Sensual Orchid, layered with BBW praline and pear. This lotion smells really good if you like edible sweet. I’m going to have to find something else to layer it with for the winter.

Well the power’s been out here since 8:30pm last night, so we’re on generator power now. It’s been windy since the wee hours. Smoke is visible but not smell-able. We’ve experienced much much worse in previous years.

Wearing Faberge / Vermont Country Store Woodhue today. Fun! I loved the Faberge version in my teens, and now VCS has had it re-constituted. It smells like I remember it :) This is the scent that sent me down the rabbit hole, when I came across a reference to it, remembered loving it, and started to search for it.

And had a really nice wine from Samsara Winery last night…! I am surprised they haven’t gotten a visit from some corporate lawyers yet.

How nice that it smells like you remembered it! And do hope the smoke and fire stay far away.

LOL on the Samsara Winery. ;-) Hope you stay safe! We have a generator too, just in case. It’s reassuring.
