Monday scent of the day 10/14

Posted by Robin on 14 October 2019 234 Comments

It's Monday, World Standards Day and National Dessert Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm starting with dessert, in Hermès Vetiver Tonka.

Reminder: on 10/18, wear a fragrance by Maria Candida Gentile, Maître Parfumeur et Gantier, Memo Paris or Miller et Bertaux if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter M.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Hermès Fall Winter 2019 campaign.

Wearing Calyx (Prescriptives), which is such a wonderful pick me up.
I have a few MPG’s so I’m good for this week.

You smell great Robin, Vetiver Tonka was one of my unexpected favourites when I tried a whole bunch of Hermessences last year.

I miss Prescriptives. Caylx is so wonderful, and they had great make up.

I don’t wear make up, so can’t comment as to that, but Prescriptives Calyx is a brilliant scent. It’s so cheerful and bracing. The new Calyx is good, but a tad sweeter.

    interesting ad for todays photo

I am having an Italian morning…
SOTD is the last few drops of GF Ferre, I am thinking of hunting down an extra large sample of this.
I was at my favorite bookstore Strand and popped into one of the consignment shops right near there and picked up a beautiful Missoni dress, Prada flats all less than 100 bucks. Part of my Italian morning. Now that the kids are outside with Mr L, I am going to practice my I verbi irregolari

I think I wore Ferre for a short while, before falling down the rabbit hole — tall-ish, fluted-glass bottle? It had too much gardenia for me, ultimately, but somehow I managed to finish the bottle.

Hmm, it appears the one I wore was called “Gianfranco Ferre Gianfranco Ferre”, as opposed to “Gianfranco Ferre Ferre”. So confusing. Anyway, there’s a picture of the one I wore here: https://www.perfume.com/gianfranco-ferre/gianfranco-ferre/women-perfume. Will have to investigate yours.

I liked it, but got that decant mostly for science, lol. It has been compared a lot to Frederic Malle Iris Poudre which I used to have. I do think they smell similar (same perfumer) and I actually liked the GF a little more. Ultimately I stopped reaching for the FM and the GF so both were sent off to new homes.

The art direction at Hermes is sort of amazing, although in the end it generally has the effect of making me not want the perfect products. But that’s true of many high end fashion lines.

It is dangerous! Just last year here an elderly couple were out walking their dog and we hit by an out of control driver. The man was killed. So sad. You wouldn’t think you would be taking your life in your own hands just by walking. Stay safe out there with the kiddos ltsg!

I would’ve hunted them down and yelled at them. I yelled at a guy a few days ago- we were backing into a parking spot and while the car was moving, this guy zooms in from nowhere right behind us to park his moped and my hubs slammed on the brakes. I got out and cursed at him. He was like “Oh, sorry” ?‍♂️.

That’s what caused my car to get totaled a couple of years ago. Elderly lady went right through a stoplight at about 50 mph and hit me. It was so scary and I’m so happy you avoided being hit!

      Oh and you smell great!

        Thank you!
I remember you posting about that! It is so scary and when you see it coming and know that there is nothing you can do to stop it. It is like your life flashes before your eyes. A few years ago when my daughter was still booster seat age, we got hit at an intersection. A young guy tried to run the light and take a left into oncoming traffic- me. We were both fine, he just clipped the front of my minivan, but I vividly remember getting out and the first thing I said to him was “My daughter was in the car!!”? I am generally a nice person, but when someone messes with one of my kids, the claws come out.

Mr. Jalapeno almost got T-boned on Saturday. A clueless/distracted driver ran a red light when he had a green one. Fortunately, Mr. Jalapeno was paying attention and slammed on the brakes. A near-miss. No damage.

So scary. I was in 2 T-bone accidents, cars totaled and not a scratch on me – miracle! My dad was in one where another driver ran a red light to make a left onto Rte 1 South when my dad was already halfway through the intersection. I don’t know how he survived with only 2 fractured ribs but he stopped driving after that which changed his life a lot (he used to go to Wegmans 2x a day to walk and generally to socialize with the the workers and other regulars) and he was reliant on others to get him there and back which severely cut down his visits.

The accident was the last time he drove? It must have been a very traumatic experience for him to give up his wegman visits and I’m sure it was a hard decision for him to make. I (knock on wood) have never been in a really bad accident, I can’t imagine.
Were you driving cars with airbags in your accidents? That is amazing. My car has a very high safety rating, but I hope I never have to find that out.?

Shower the. A bit of the Brazilian Bum Bum cream on my elbows and arms, followed up by sprays of Kiss Me Intense. I really enjoy the bitter almond that muffles sweetness.

Long walk yesterday through West Village, down the Hudson, through the Winter Garden and then over to Water and Wall to catch the bus home. No sniffing, but I did buy a soft light gray/green wool beret and my husband bought a dapper wool felt hat with a fairly small brim. And added a subtle feather.

I will say that few people do brunch as well as New Yorkers. They can drag it out for hours, especially on a day when sitting outside is pleasant.

Please forgive the rambling post. I am getting low on the Amouage Lyric body butter and I am looking to replace it soon and went poking around the internet to see who had the best prices for it. I was really surprised that Walmart is selling Amouage on their website. Would I buy Amouage from Walmart? Nope, I don’t know how legit it is but they aren’t selling the body butter of Lyric. But I am not having a lot of luck finding the body butter for a reasonable price. Today, filming for a couple clips of the new Liam Neeson movie started filming around my house. My house, dogs and I will not be in it but the filming is a couple minutes away from my house. Spending the day in Amouage Lyric today.

Day off! Today I am finally getting to smell and wear Mitsouko. Thank you Petunia! I’ve read and heard so many conflicting opinions, I was a little nervous, but I really like it. For some reason I thought it was going to be a giant perfume, like superstitious. I’m finding it quite lovely. Similar in feel to vintage Cabochard. Today is the day to tackle paperwork. So far, I have procrastinated by cleaning the kitchen, bathroom and 2 loads of laundry . Plus have an early lunch. LOL!

I’ve never tried it. The only Guerlain around here is Shalimar and Mon Guerlain. Even back in the day, I never saw anything else, except Insolence, and that didn’t last.

That makes it really difficult for you to smell the classics, Mitsouko, Chamade, l’Heure Bleue and Jicky are pretty much indispensable in my book. Chamade is sister to Annick Goutal Grand Amour, they both have galbanum, so there is a green element to them, but the florals and drydown (the guerlinade) of Chamade are more beautiful imo. Crossing fingers you can experience them soon.

SOTD are the last dregs of my Cafe Noir mini…. I smell so good!

Update on my “A Woman of No Importance” musings about what perfume Virginia Hall wore (American woman who was an SOE agent in WWII supplying and organizing the French Resistance)–the author wrote me back! . . . She writes:

    “[W]hat an interesting question!

“Alas I do not know the exact name of the perfume she liked. Just that when she was on operations in Haute Loire – despite the hardships she endured – she liked to wear what some of her fighters considered ‘expensive’ French scent. Mind you washing was not easy! She was, however, a fastidious woman who loved style and dressing up and was a striking figure. Quite a few of the maquisards were in love with her, for sure.

“If I ever find out more, I will let you know

    “Best wishes
    Sonia Purnell”

My money is on Jicky, but who knows?

Off to spend the day helping my younger son put together his oral presentation on Radical Reconstruction and the Black Codes…. this is a holiday? What? Really?????

It smells like its from another era but its okay, its the escapism i desperately need right now! I have a hard time coping with politics and news right now. It hits me harder than ever.

So at the moment i just use the internet to stare at pics of cute cats and dogs, and to read about perfume and history. ☺️

I’m a massive fan of the 1995 version, and not just because of Colin Firth ( or so I tell myself ;) ).

I do know that channel and it is hilarious. Still I prefer to watch wirehaired dogs filmed while tracking. I know I’m slightly barmy.

I used to dress my dachsie in custom made sweaters when it was really cold.

Ah Yesss Colin Firth, I prefer that version as well. Though I havent seen them all….

I grew up with a mini wirehaired dachshund (and lots of other pets) ‘wildkleur’….
She was adorable and very smart.

And now my mother has another wirehaired one, not a mini but a normal size. I think the colour is called ‘rood’/red though to me it looks more like a strawberry blonde.

I always feel sorry for them when they have to walk through the snow and ice. So i totally get why you have them some sweaters. They probably look cute as a button as well :)

          • austenfan says:
            14 October 2019 at 2:14 pm

Mine was a standard wirehair in Saufarben (wildzwijnkleur), brindle. Your mums dog is called tarwekleurig in Dutch and red in English.

She did look very cute and I would often find her surrounded by elderly ladies discussing her comfortable jumper with her, whenever she had had to wait for me outside a shop. :)

My two cents–I would love the Colin Firth version the most, except I HATE the choice of actress who plays Jane Bennet. To me, she is totally wrong for the part. I get irritated every time she is on the screen.

          • austenfan says:
            14 October 2019 at 4:14 pm

It’s awful when that happens. She doesn’t bother me at all, but I know how something like that can really alter your perception of the whole. It actually took me a while to like the 1995 version as I had already watched an earlier BBC adaptation (the one from 1980).
I happen to get really irritated by Keira Knightley (for reasons unknown even to myself) and have therefore never watched the entire film. Also, I think one would have to really cut a lot out of the story to squash it into a film. The book seems to lend itself more to a tv-series.

No, not really, but I can imagine it being fun to watch.
A friend of mine breeds miniature Schnauzers and one of her dogs has done agility and excelled at it. I always love it when owners of small dogs treat them as real dogs and take the trouble to do an activity with them.

    SOTD = Papillon Bengale Rouge

I was going to wear small M’s this whole week but the call of Bengale Rouge was too strong. Here’s my take on today’s wearing:

Marginally less rain today, and the sun made a few apparitions. I chose l’Air de Rien, it’s a persistent little number but fortunately for the office it wears quite close, half an arm length I would say. It’s a scent I wear in the colder months.

Scent of last night and this morning: La Myrrhe. I’m still finding it very lovely. :)

I got my flu shot this afternoon. That part of my upper arm is aching a bit. I’m right-handed, so I asked for the nurse to give me the shot in my left arm. I’ll report back if any particularly notable side effects hit, but fingers crossed that it will just be a moderate ache in that arm for a couple of days.

good on you for getting your flu shot! I skipped mine last year and ended up very sick for six weeks. Could have been inevitable either way, but this year I got my shot as soon as it was available. Oddly, I did have what felt like a mild cold/flu for about a week beginning two days after the shot. But completely worth it if I get through this winter without bronchitis, laryngitis, and asthma like last year, blech.

I forgot to add that I inadvertently celebrated Dessert Day at lunchtime with a piece of cherry pie, and then deliberately after dinner with a serving of apple crumble. A friend and I had gone to an Amish farm stand south of Parkesburg, PA on Saturday, which is a day when they have baked goods. I had fun.

It’s kitty update time! Pixel is home! The vet bill is less than I thought it would be, but it still has a comma in it. Pixel has a medicine that she will have to be on for the rest of her life. ?

SOTD = still commando. Too nervous to wear something today. Maybe tomorrow?

Oh so happy for you, and Pixel, too. Bertie Wooster is on a lifetime med that costs $120/refill, so I know the pain.

      Wear something celebratory!

I don’t think that the supplement Pixel will be taking is that expansive. It’s a huge tube of goo. And she will have to eat a different food than the other 2 cats.

Long story short, Pixel kitty spent the weekend at the emergency vet for a UTI plus kidney issues. She will have to take a potassium supplement for the rest of her life. It’s maple flavored, and she doesn’t seem to be a fan.

    SotD = Ambre Narguile

I’ve been wearing AN since last Friday’s apple note CP! I adore this scent, it makes me want to bake an apple pie.

Robin’s SotD reminded me how much I enjoy the Hermessences. Need to get back to wearing Vanille Galante now that winter is coming.

Hope everyone had a fantastic Monday. You all smell wonderful.:D

Today was my work’s annual all-staff meeting instead of being off on Indigenous People’s Day (Seattle has celebrated it in lieu of Columbus Day since 2014). Meeting had good food, some nice activities and speakers, and some very lovely awards were given. I was happy to hear words I’d written nominating fellow employees be read aloud as a couple of those nominees won. One bit I wrote even got a laugh, which was good because it was meant to be funny. I wore the lovely Memo Irish Leather, which was not on my radar until I got it in a recent swap. It’s a great tea leather perfume.
