Friday scent of the day 10/11

Posted by Robin on 11 October 2019 229 Comments

Happy Friday and happy National Apple Month! Our community project for today: wear a perfume with an apple note.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

It was no easy thing to find, but I'm wearing a dab of By Kilian Apple Brandy.

Reminder: on 10/18, wear a fragrance by Maria Candida Gentile, Maître Parfumeur et Gantier, Memo Paris or Miller et Bertaux if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter M.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Couldn’t find my decant of Apple Brandy so I’m in Lann-Ael for the project

You smell lovely! I’m very fond of Lann-Ael. It’s my perfume of choice to wear with flannel pajamas by the fireplace. It’s beginning to get chilly here so I’ll be wearing it again soon.

Did a deep dive into my samples and pulled out Frederic Malle Outrageous! which is probably my favorite “clean laundry” scent with a bit of apple and citrus at the start.

Happy friday!! I’m wearing cafe tuberosa, which is actually really nice, like if vera wang princess and amouage imitation woman had a baby. I think I would still rather have one or the other, but if you need a weird perfume that’s still office friendly, this would fit the bill.

I have exactly one perfume with apple and it is Dear Polly and I love it. I would say it’s a perfect fall perfume except I’m pretty sure that in summer I also thought it was a great summer perfumed. Stay tuned for what I think in winter.

Ran out of comment thread. Definitely beans in my chili, black or pinto, sometimes both. Also corn and Hatch chili peppers. I’m not a purist; a pot of chili means I get to use up stuff in the freezer. Your chili sounds delicious! I’ll have to try out chili in the IP this fall.

ELDO I Am Trash. The opening Apple note is fun. A few hours in I’m not smelling much anymore. I general I haven’t got on with much from ELDO – there must be something running throughout the line that doesn’t appeal.

I dont think I have a scent with an apple note in my collection. :(
Well maybe I do in my mountain of samples, but I did not have time to look into it. Busy day. Cleaning living room, removing piles of clutter, getting groceries, preparing meal for my book club tonight.,..

I am wearing Ormonde Woman today.
Its has been raining all day.

I also tried the cola scent from that less expensive line from By Kilian. (was it called Boys?)
The cola note was very nice but was gone in 60 seconds.
What is left is an extremely generic woody synthetic.
I think I smelt this in at least 20 other designer/drugstore frags.
    Disappointing.

I am not near the fires, Deva. I am near the water and actually live in a tsunami zone. but, the air is bringing smoke in. I cannot see any of the mountains out my windows. usually I can see all the way to Mt. Baldy.

Think it’s just general jitters over moving, work, the fierceness of the fires, the overheated politics. Somehow it has all settled in my tummy and throat the past two days.

A friend who is 5 months pregnant just texted me saying the fires were 5 blocks from her house last night. She is okay now.

This is for Hajusuuri — I just saw that you asked where I got the UV Blocker umbrella. I might have found it originally on Amazon, and there are other brands there, too.

These days I order directly from the UV Blocker website for the best selection and clearest specs:

    https://uv-blocker.com/collections/uv-protection-umbrellas/products/uv-protection-compact-umbrella

There are several sizes, but I’ve found this compact size is perfectly adequate.

The wind vents don’t prevent the umbrella from turning inside out in a direct wind hit, but it’s sturdy enough to go back into shape without any parts breaking. Works fine for rain as well as sun.

Thank you nozknoz. Last year, when I went on a Victorian Homes tour on a really sunny day, I brought my regular umbrella, knowing that while it offers some protection, the opaque one you described is best. I will check out the link!

Loving all the varieties of apples available these days. Used to be there were Golden, Red Delicious, McIntosh, Gala and Granny Smith’s and now, it’s nuts how many varieties markets are selling. McIntosh are my favorite followed by Golden and then Macoun.

I do detect a fruity note underlying the spice in Black Cashmere.

I don’t know what fruit it might be, but there’s a sort of ripe sweetness under the spice. I always notice because I wish the perfume were drier.

Congrats on the new job! Was offline yesterday so didn’t see the news. My guess is your former workplace will feel your loss.

I never liked apples growing up. I think it’s because we only had red delicious, which my dad always preferred. Goldens are really good…underrated. I’m a Gala fan but I think my favorite is Pink Lady. A tartness I love.

I remember those days, except we had no Galas – just the 3 Delicious and Grannies. None are great eating imo. My faves are Pink Lady and Jazz, which were easy to come by in WA but I’ve not seen them in Ohio. But there are other varietals out here that I haven’t explored.

I’m leaning toward your getting BdI, too ? (But really, you can’t go wrong with BdI.)

Yep, the snow itself is not what worries me. It’s the rain from last evening that turned to ice overnight. So I imagine under that snow is an ice skating rink.⛸

Gah! I thought of perfume in my collection the other day that has an apple note, and dang it if it is not coming to me again this morning. So, not participating…

Am in Le Labo’s Labdanum, which smells like such an old fashion perfume (in a good way!) to my nose. Perfect for this cool windy day.

    Two random things:

The first is that I am still making my way through A Woman of No Importance, about the American woman who worked for the SOE and OSS in WWII helping the French Resistance—really enjoying it. Virginia Hall was so extraordinary… but anyway, I read a bit the other night about a rendezvous in a field with locals where she really had to impress the tired, hungry, and frustrated young men with her authority—a long-awaited supplies drop was going to happen and her credibility was in the balance. Her biography is replete with stories of people underestimating her, or behaving badly because she was a woman. Anyway, in addition to wearing military fatigues including slacks (not something she did often), she apparently wore a silk scarf and her beloved expensive French perfume to the meeting. In a few places in the book her biographer mentions Hall’s penchant for French perfume and that it would be air-dropped to her along with tea and millions of francs and hundreds of STEN guns. She definitely strikes me as an L’Heure Bleue woman. I am tempted to write the author to find out if she knows what perfume Hall wore.

And even more random, has anyone ordered clothes from Universal Standard? I just made an impulse buy of a puffy jacket that wasn’t cheap…

I also wonder what Virginia’s perfume was!
That book sounds interesting. I am putting it on my ever growing ‘to read’ list.

I just read a book about two jewish sisters in the resistance in WWII in the Netherlands. Real life story as well. How brave and fierce and generous they were! They helped so many folks. And they suffered so much in the camps, indescribable and unbelievable.

I discovered last night that apparently La Traversée du Bosphore has an apple note. I’m not wearing it, though.
I chose to wear Mohur extrait de parfum, because, roses and apples are related plant wise and I needed armour for a work meeting. Also, it smells great.

    Wearing DKNY Be Delicous!
I wore it for a couple of years in the early 2000s. My grade-school-aged kids loved it.
I was crushed, crushed, when I started reading Now Smell This and discovered that Robin had a strong dislike.
Oh, well…..and then I fell down the rabbit hole of perfume sampling!
Many bottles later, I still enjoy that juicy fruity note, but only once in while.
    Happy Autumn everyone!

I got nothin’, nada, nil on an apple scent. Not even Apple blossom. So, I did a couple spritzes of Jasmins Marzipane.

Good news on the kitty front. Took her in for blood work and her thyroid is exactly as it should be! Success! Finally. Part of it is my husband has gotten more serious about grabbing her to apply the transdermal medicine. And, I added one of those calming diffusers to our living room. I really think that did a lot of good. She’s been losing far less hair and scratching less. She’s just out and about a lot more since the diffuser went in. Why didn’t we think of that before???

    Happy Friday, guys!

    1) The weather is clear and very sunny today, but not warm at all. It feels honestly like we skipped 3-4 weeks ahead with the chilly temps. and I understand that there are parts of the midwest getting snowstorms. Yeesh!

    2) Am NOT in an apple scent, since I tend to find them VERY sweet. Am instead in BeautyPie Petals, Heliotrope and Ambrette scent on top of Sugar Vanilla body cream from Carol’s Daughter. I smell like someone’s rich mom.

    3) This will be a cooking and visiting weekend- a colleague had surgery for cancer, so will be visiting her in hospital. And I will THEN be making big batches of chicken stock and beef bone stock. Now that I have my big fancy fridge, I have more space in both the chill and freezer side to batch cook healthy foods and keep ingredients!

I’m in the apple-adjacent Perris Monte Carlo Mandarino di Sicilia which was included in a swap. Really nice citrus with a hint of green and a tad of salt to my nose. Very natural smelling and uplifting for a mostly gray day. No apples in my collection, I think because things that I’ve tried with prominent apple I haven’t liked, so I don’t think I’m an apple note lover.

However, thinking today about the part of the world it’s named for just makes me sad. To lift my spirits I’ve decided on peach instead of apple. Peche Cardinale, in addition to smelling good, turns my thoughts in a more hopeful direction.

I am wearing Pulp, which supposedly has an apple note, my nose is not that keen with fruits. Our humane society was gifted with 6,000 pet beds in all sizes, so they held a sale and every bed was $10. I got a bunch for my crew and for Christmas gifts. Between the beds and the Atelier Advent calendars, my holiday shopping is pretty much done!

PSA: There will be a Portland Sniffa November 2 and 3; Shelly Waddington of EnVoyage Perfumes is coordinating it. You can contact her on Facebook if you are interested in going one day or both. There is a swap at the end and some amazing stuff was brought.

A beautiful Saturday morning here, very excited that two armchairs will soon be delivered. We threw out the old (very old!) ones before we got carpet laid, and have been waiting for months for the new ones.
I’m also very much looking forward to a hair cut and colour this morning. My mother’s visit, much as I enjoyed it, disrupted my usual routine, and I’ve been looking increasingly unkempt.
I can’t think of any perfumes at hand with an apple note, but I do have Plum, so I’m still in the ballpark – or rather the orchard.

Participating today for the first time I years, it feels like. Looked for some twins, but didn’t see any. Surely some will join me at some point in Ambre Narguile.

I actually had a hankering for Vetiver Tonka, which led me to remember the CP. The Ambre is in deep deep drydown territory now (apple-tinged sweet musk) so I think I’ll go for the Vetiver.

I keep thinking we’ve had the last nice day of fall and then it keeps being beautiful and sunny and warm. But this might really be the end today. Not looking forward to cold weather but at least it’s easy to dress for. I can’t figure out what to wear when it’s hovering around 70F (following very chilly mornings.)

I need to try applying AN more liberally, to see if I can actually smell the apple.

I am wearing Biehl al02, which has a good spiced apple note. It is quite strong, so I always have to remember that a little bit goes a long way.

I have Lann Ael, so maybe I’ll wear it over the week-end. I forgot there’s some apple in that.

I did have a SweeTango apple with lunch today. I find them to be quite a bit like the Honey Crisp.

Wearing Imaginary Authors Slow Explosions today. It’s apple note is a bit stronger than Wazamba but there’s a similarity between the two; I smell incense in SE but it’s not listed in the notes. Happy Friday everyone.

I have to say that I must have smelled everything at some point but I wanted to retry Champagne de Bois (which I quarantined because a family member was vocally opposed to it and, as how life goes, it was also my very first venture into offering freebies).

Bees Bliss 30mLs and travel sprays of Champagne de Bois and Incense Pure. I had been somewhat hoarding Bees Bliss and now I can spray with abandon (once I receive it…I have not seen a shipping notice). And when I checked the website just now, I got an error message “502 Bad Gateway”…oh oh…

It ended up being a rather nice fall afternoon in my area, despite starting off rather yucky-looking this morning. ??

I will be taking the sick kitty to the vet tomorrow morning. She had been showing some signs of improvement earlier in the week, but she definitely is not feeling well at all. ?

SOTD = Soivohle A Rose for Beacon Free EdP, from the sample stash. This has both dried fruit notes, and a hint of applewood smoke in it, so I figure I am covered both ways. It is SUCH a pretty thing.

Today I’m taking a leaf out of Robin’s book by wearing Un Jardin sur Le Toit, fortunately it’s the right kind of day for it :-)

I think it might be my only perfume with an apple note? Don’t think slow explosions was in the sample set I got from IA, though most of them got relegated to the ‘nope’ pile pretty quickly, and I can’t remember the full list.

Thanks to the lovely Petunia, I wore La Danza delle libellule today. I don’t know my apple names, but it’s definitely carmel and tart apple on me. I smell cozy for the turning weather tonight. Cold front, wind and rain. I swear the leaves all started turning today. I hope everyone dealing with blizzards and fire instead, stay safe and sound.

I’ve had an absolutely insane work week, so it’s made me not able to post much. I think/hope next week will be much better. I cannot wait to sleep in without an alarm tomorrow.

I’ve been wearing my apple note perfumes all week. Today is Pulp, yesterday was Traversee du Bosphore, and Wednesday was St. Clair Pandora.

SOTD is NR Nina (the 2006 version in the cute apple bottle). Its lemon/lime opening adds a welcome touch of sour to balance the sweetness of the candied apple/praline midnotes. An inexpensive find on clearance at my supermarket, of all places, a few years ago, it’s a nice one for a day of plummeting temps, the first cold day of the season.

Went to an inspirational program this morning that wiped away the stresses of the past week and gave me hope that our political processes can be restored to normalcy, but that calm evaporated quickly when we turned on the heat for the first time tonight and the boiler is making a strange loud buzzing sound. Call in to the heating company. Grrr!

So many sick fur babies this week – my heart goes out to those of you experiencing this pain and worry, I know it so well. Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. My little one with the broken paw has adapted quite well to getting around temporarily on 3 paws, but once again she managed to rip off her bandage so we made another unexpected trip to the vet. Another grrr! I keep singing, to her and to me, ‘It’ll get better, it’ll get better, it’ll get better . . . I suppose.’

Wishing a good weekend ahead for all of you, with at least a couple of rays of sunshine!

Scent of the late evening: Demeter Mulled Cider. I get apple cider and spices. I think the fragrance is very nice, but my arms are itching a bit, so I may need to wash it off soon. If it doesn’t work on my skin, I may spray it on clothes that are a similar color to the “juice.”

I completely forgot to wear the apple scent I had planned: Nina, by Nina Ricci! I have a cute mini of it that even looks like an apple. I’m not sure why, but I grabbed Cartier Carat instead. Very pretty, but no apples.

At least I’m not the only one who forgot, again. I meant to wear Ted Lapidus Silk Way, which is a fun, if a bit shampoo-leaning, apple over some quiet incense. Instead I’m in Dzongkha, from the Swapmeet, which to me is all iris, incense, and vetiver. Lovely and meditative, but no apple at all. I’m excited to read everyone else’s picks. I’ve only smelled Apple Brandy on a card, but that card smelled more and more wonderful, and I really wish I’d gotten a sample.
