Wednesday scent of the day 10/9

Posted by Robin on 9 October 2019 238 Comments

Hump Day and John Lennon’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Imaginary Authors Yesterday Haze because Ringthing reminded me on Monday.

Reminder: on 10/11, celebrate National Apple Month by wearing a perfume with an apple note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Smelling great in Chanel No.19 EdT.

Anyone in NY who could please recommend a good veterinarian? My dog is very sick and his usual vet moved out of town few weeks ago. I think I will need to rush him to the ER soon. Not sure if it is allowed to leave here any comments regarding the name of a vet place. If not, my email is monica67@aol.com. Any recommendation would be very appreciated.

    Happy Hump day everyone!

Oh, no! For emergency care AMC (Animal Medical Center) is a good place. https://www.amcny.org
It’s on E 62nd St. I hope your pup will be ok!

Can’t recommend anyone but encourage you to go to the emergency vet! By the time we notice the changes illness causes in our pups, they are usually very sick and need immediate care. Best of luck to you and the pupster! Keep us updated, T-Rex and I are rooting for you both!

Also Blue Pearl, which has locations on W 55th and downtown. Pricier but very good.

What a perfect image for today! Raise your hand if you also thought this was, somehow, a Body Shop body butter paying tribute to Lennon.

My Chinchilla came last night and so I’m wearing Chinchilla. Everyone should try this beauty – it is one of those perfumes that just smells so darned GOOD you’re surprised no one’s made it before.

A version was “re-launched” in 2017, and although I don’t have I full bottle, I have gotten a decant from a decant house. I prefer the “vintage” version I’m wearing today.

I am having an Italian morning

    SOTD Gianfranco Ferré, Ferré

Italian clothing (all thrift, Alberta Ferretti sweater, Luca Luca jacket and shoes, Blumarine denim)

    About to make an espresso..

Spent the morning practicing my Italian with my neighbor. I got lots of compliment on my perfume today, which usually never happens.

Thrifting allows me to be chic without worrying about what I am wearing, or how its washed, or if it rips, or if my two kids dump their food all over it, tug at it, put holes in it!

I was reading Fortune and they had a bit on thrift store shopping : “There’s tremendous cachet in secondhand shopping these days. It’s seen as savvy and sustainable, part of the treasure hunt of scoring unique looks. One in three women shopped secondhand in 2017”

Well I really like the opening, it is little fruity but not overly so and then the floral notes, mostly a light Jasmine become apparent. I did layer it over coconut oil but it disappeared very quickly on me. That happens all the time or if there is a white musk I am anosmic to it. I used half the sample and will try it again. It’s clean and light.

Yesterday was the perfect fall day and we spent all our daylight hours outside. Cool, sunny, falling leaves, moderate breeze- just PERFECTO!

Today is another story! Rain forecasted for today, then turning to snow Thursday and Friday with expected accumulation of 4-10 inches! Yikes! Getting my gums filleted tomorrow unless the weather is so bad they close the office. Working F-S-S and not planning on leaving the hospital parking lot because snow + ice + Florida driver = ?

I’m the the warm, humid, chewy En Voyage Zelda to offset the unpleasant weather forecast. T-Rex is once again sporting her orange fleece. We just had a timely delivery of a technical 2 person (or one person and a ?) sleeping bag. I was really hoping to avoid all this by leaving the end of November, but everyone here said they had one of worst winters on record last year and expecting the same for this year. Oy! ?

Zelda will keep me warm! I hope…

I go on my lunch break to check on her and let her out. It’s a good walk from the hospital, so by the time I get there and let her out, I have turn right around to get back. The van is insulated with sheep’s wool, then has 3/4” plywood, covered with shiplap. The floor is plywood and manufactured flooring on top of sheep’s wool. The fiberglass camper top is not insulated although I don’t think it conducts cold like metal. Most of the heat loss comes from the windows. She’ll be quite comfortable in the sleeping bag with her fleece on, plus I have a hot water bottle I can put in there with her if need be. She’s is very hip to keeping herself comfortable and I have come out on my break and she has be *strongly* encouraged to get out of her nest. Then, she hops right back in and under the covers without a backward glance. As long as we stay above 0F, we’ll be fine.

Thanks for your answer. Your van actually sounds quite “örganic” with the sheep’s wool insulation! Sounds like T-Rex is very comfortable. In summer, our two small dogs each have their own chair that they curl up on, but in winter the two brothers spoon very amicably.

I did a LOT of research regarding insulation and my major concern was condensation and the subsequent growth of mold. Sheep’s wool is naturally moisture wicking and doesn’t support mold growth. Luckily, when I had the van built out last year I was in the same town as Havelock wool (Reno, NV). It’s a clean, renewable, and affordable option.

My brother HATES the salt used in Colorado. It’s magnesium chloride, which is “stickier” than good old sodium chloride. Means you have to wash a vehicle for it to come off. It’s used b/c it works at lower temps.

My power is out and the only internet to be had is on my phone. People are working on power lines and had to turn off the power. If I have a day off, I refuse to wake up early but had to get a shower in before we had no power. I am commando at the moment but probably going to continue on with last night’s bed time scent of vintage L’heure Bleue extrait.

I’ve just applied sunscreen, and it’s so fragranced that I haven’t been able to put on any perfume. I am forever in search of a really effective sunscreen I can use on my face (I have hyperpigmentation) that is broad spectrum, relatively high spf, doesn’t pill under makeup, is mostly mineral based, etc., etc., etc. I am currently testing ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica – good reviews, derm recommended, but is super expensive and has a strong scent. After the scent fades, I might apply Ciel d’Opale – haven’t worn that in a while, and I can always use some bright and happy notes wafting around me.

I’m very glad it is Wednesday – happy hump day, all!

Lisa D – I love two, one is by EltaMD, UV Clear, 1.7 oz SPF 46 ($35), with niacinamide (vitamin B3), hyaluronic acid and lactic acid, to reduce hyperpigmentation and irritation. It’s a favorite and I’ve used it for years.

Another less expensive but just as effective is by DRMTLGY, their Broad Spectrum SPF 45 also has niacinamide and it’s $22 for 2 oz.
Both are elegant, light weight, broad spectrum and don’t pill under foundation. Their Vitamin C 5x serum has five different types of vitamin c to brighten.

Physician’s Formula makes a serum called Restoring Skin Booster Vitamin Shot with niacinamide and licorice extract, both skin brighteners, it is $11 at Target. :)

SmokeyToes, I really like the EltaMD UV Clear, too – I just go through it too fast! 1.7 oz doesn’t last me very long.

I’m going to try the DRMTLGY and PF ones – thank you for the recommendations!

I purchased the DRMTLGY sunscreen and Vitamin C 5x on sale for 30% off. I have hyper-pigmentation and sun damage, regular use has improved my skin so much that I no longer need foundation.
The results really have been amazing.

Lisa D I am also on the hunt for a holy grail sunscreen. I was fully in love with Biore UV Aqua Rich (had to order it from Japan), but recently decided to switch to mineral-only sunscreen. I’m also looking for something lightweight, unscented, and relatively inexpensive. For now I’ve settled on Aveeno Positively Mineral SPF 50 for sensitive skin, but I can’t for the life of me find a mineral sunscreen that doesn’t make my already pale skin look downright ghostly.

Yes, and so many of them seem to contain a lot of silicones, which are difficult to remove. At some point in this years-long sunscreen testing process, I had to start oil cleansing because of the heavy silicone concentration, but I found that so tedious that I moved on to other options.

I have liked MyChelle Dermaceuticals Sun Shield SPF 28 Unscented. I think I would use that one all the time, except because of my hyperpigmentation, I am always looking for higher SPF.

I also have hyperpigmentation so I use many layers of sun protection. I use: Volition (Sephora) mineral sunscreen spf 45- nice and acts as a luminizing primer. Next up is Miracle Skin “foundation” mineral spf 40 (from Ebaysince it’s d/c but still easily found in the Bay)- it’s fairly sheer so more like tinted moisturizer. Finally, It Cosmetics spf 50 airbrushing powder. Yeah, it’s a lot, lol.

I like Eucerin Daily Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 30. Not heavy or chalky. I wish it came in SPF 50, but if I plan ahead, I can apply two layers before going out.

Also, I always carry UV Blocker umbrellas with a silvery coating that provide another SPF 50.

I’d call them parasols, but they’re not fancy, just sturdy, black, wind-resistant umbrellas in a range of sizes with a silver exterior.

Lisa D, check out the YouTube channel “Hot and Flashy”, and search for sunscreen review. She does an EXCELLENT year end review of the best sunscreens that perform well with makeup, don’t irritate, and all that stuff. I prefer mineral over chemical sunscreen 99% of the time….There’s a bazillion choices out there!

My favorite picks from her suggestions are Clinique SPF 30 for Body (cheaper than the one labeled for face; same ingredients!) when I don’t want a tint.

My favorite tinted one is Australian Gold Botanical SPF 50. LOVE THIS ONE!

I will check out “Hot and Flashy.” Thanks!

Definitely on my last couple of sprays from my Privet Bloom, which seems to have lasted for ages! Used it this morning prior to a dental appointment, & will use it again tomorrow prior to a medical appointment; yes, this will still leave the freebie travel size roll-on of PB that the lady I dealt with kindly popped into the package, which I have mentioned on here before, but that aside, I have a few samples – remains of Rose Green, untried Posh on the Green & untried Nuptial Bouquet, all of which I’ll use on forthcoming handcarry luggage trips. I also have about a quarter of a bottle of Promenade in the Gardens & a full bottle of Yours Truly, which I opened recently just to try, as it was a sniffed but untried on my skin purchase. This being retired lark is all very well, but it does mean I use far less fragrance than I did when I was working! Goodness only knows how many more options will have flooded the market by the time I actually need to buy a new bottle of something!

SOTD is Narciso Rouge, this month’s scentbox pick, which they sent in the ugliest metallic-lime green atomizer you’ve ever seen instead of a red one, ah well. It swaps the creamy gardenia for a vanillic rose-iris combo. It’s kind of hard to pick up on at times, which is a problem I’ve heard with this line but haven’t actually dealt with myself until now. It was fine at first spray but it’s been just over an hour and now it’s more of a suggestion, like sniffing my wrists 10+ hours later.

So it goes too silent on me to have much of an opinion on, but obviously I prefer the original white cube!

Had a super hectic day, but can sit back and relax with a glass of white wine right now and read NST. Just spritzed Ninfeo Mio, after being commando the whole day, and it feels just a teensy bit too upbeat for my tired state of mind. I have identified a void in my perfume wardrobe: the “sit back and relax” type. Any suggestions? Also, a question to all the people with huge perfume collections and encyclopaedic perfume knowledge, I am looking for a “human/cuminy” perfume and have narrowed down the choices to LÁrtisan no 8, Al Oudh and Theo Fennell Scent. Does anyone here have a preference amongst those? Thank you!

In Dzongkha for this crazy day. Oh do love this perfume!!!

Cool outside and nary a hint of wind, never-the-less our power is slated to go down at Noon. Power co. is saying it could be out for five days.

California has one of the biggest economies in the world, and yet wind and hot weather is causing shut downs for over 2.5 million people across the state, AND the power co. website has crashed so no one can get updates on their neighborhoods.

I’m still reading a book on my Kindle, but the silver-lining of this power outage is that once I have no more power in my Kindle I can turn to Scented (!!), which finally arrived from the Tropic of Capricorn yesterday!

I finished my book and it left quite an impression…as one can expect when reading about ww2 and the Holocaust. I had to go for a walk afterwards to let it all sink in and also to absorb some positive city vibes.

And then I watched a heron catch a fat rat and swallow it, right in front of me (he/she was like less than 10 meter away). It was a nice distraction actually, and in the middle of the city..of all places.

I think I might be catching a cold, I sneezed a lot yesterday and today my nose is a little drippy. I feel fine except I’m cold, I’ve poked the thermostat up twice so far. Wearing Musc Tonkin for warmth, too.

Thanks for your well wishes yesterday!

Appeals court done … I’ll know in a few days as to the ruling as it will be provided via a written decision. The judge said, and maybe he says this to every Medicare beneficiary appellant, that I presented my case well. There were 4 people from the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) three of whom I know since my sisters and I were there pretty much at least 5 days a week each and made our presence known AND a new to me “Director of Education and Learning”. I suppose I could have objected to him being there but there no sense in starting off in an adversarial stance. Medicare decided TODAY not to send a representative so I am sure the judge will take that into consideration. It could go either way: they are confident with their decision and stand by it … and on the flip side, them not showing up supports my complaint that they have not been forthcoming with information to which a Medicare recipient is entitled. I decided not to slam the SNF because my appeal is not on the level of care. Anyway, I rewarded myself with a meal at Red Lobster and an iced tea of the Long Island variety ?.

Joining OaklandFresca in waiting for the power to get cut. Supposed to be imminent. So glad the power company cares so much about our safety *cough cough* their liabilities. Got our generator hooked up, waiting to go.

No scent yet, but will have to pick something fun for later: we are going to SF this evening to see Beach Blanket Babylon, which is sadly ending its run at the end of this year. Any suggestions on how to scent BBB?

Yeah I got a phone call at 11am from PG&E telling me that our power was out. Nope. It’s still on, 2 hours later.

We don’t have a red flag warning here until 5pm, hoping they hold off the power cuts at least until we have WIND. Since that’s the excuse.

      A hat perfume! That’s a fine idea!

I think Deva sent some of her less than optimal fall weather in my direction. It’s a cold, wet and grey day. Someone today called their weather “dreary”, and that’s a pretty good description of mine, too. ☔

I think I will have to make a vet appointment for one of the cats very soon. She’s sick… lots of sneezing, lots of sleeping, and less eating & drinking than usual. Poor kitty.

SOTD = back to Samsara EdP. It’s more plush and cosy to my nose than its EdT sibling, which is more floral to my nose. Both have to be in my collection, though. ?

Cats are susceptible to URIs..good you are takin cat in. They stop smelling their food during upper respiratory..therefore..less drinkin, less eating…sometimes they will give your kitty fluids..best to take kitty in. Hope all works out.

Super late today. I wore Datura Noir during the daytime.
This evening I received a surprise package from a supremely generous NSTR, KPainter. Words cannot express my thanks as I am currently wearing the vintage version of my beloved White Linen. It’s not that. I have a sentimental attachment to the vintage so the modern version doesn’t move me. Ir’s not the same.
