Friday scent of the day 9/6

Posted by Robin on 6 September 2019 388 Comments

It's Friday, National Coffee Ice Cream Day and Read A Book Day. Our (unrelated) community project is Best in Class...you decide the category, then wear the best.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing a dab of Fendi Theorema, the bestest creamsicle perfume ever.

Reminder: On 9/13, protect yourself from bad (Friday the 13th) juju with a Fierce Force Field Fragrance. Adapted from a suggestion by chocolatemarzipan.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In Lady Gaga Eau de Gaga. The best perfume in the celebrity category that I have tried and enjoy a lot so far.

I saw this at tj maxx the other day. Crazy good deal. All I remember from smelling it, when it came out, was that I liked it better than Fame.

I think Fame is nice, but not enough for me to wear it.

Yum, coffee ice cream is my favorite. There’s an old fashioned ice cream shop where my daughter goes to college that hand makes their ice cream daily and they have my all time favorite flavor: cappuccino Oreo.?
I’m in Casmir, because I saw it mentioned yesterday. The only bad thing about this fragrance is the bottle design. It’s hard to get the last remaining drops out because of it’s flat bottom.
TGIF! This has been a hectic week. Hoping for some downtime over the weekend. And some sun! It has only been out this week on the days I’ve been stuck inside at work.

It is swoon worthy.? The last time I was there, I waited in line for 20 minutes just to get a dish. It was worth it, soooo creamy and delicious.

I’m in vintage Hermes Doblis EDC, best in the category of Vintage Floral Leather That Really Needs To Be Splashed With Abandon. A very specific category, I realize, but seriously, people of Hermes, please find a way to reissue this! I could only afford a half-ml dab sample because it’s incredibly rare, but so gorgeous! I’m going to go apply the rest of the molecules I have left before they evaporate.

PSA announcement – Not sure how many NST’ers use Chanel No 19 soap, but apparently it’s being discontinued. If you love it, get it now. I checked The Bay website, and it said limited quantity available.

It is leathery but in a very smooth way because it’s paired with a lot of gorgeous vanilla.

Siiighhh and heellllp. I was going to wear Une Rose today for the CP but the sprayer on my travel spray wouldn’t depress! Like it is seriously stuck in the up position. Any advice? This is probably one of my top 5 but so expensive to replace… wah!

Instead I’m wearing Ivy Tower from Providence Perfume Co.

No help but I’ve also had a broken Eau de Magnolia travel spray for the last year at least. I bought it from am individual not from any official source so have been unsure about reaching out to FM. However, I may go ahead and try it since it seems like a defect.

I’m going with Carthusia Mediterraneo for the last hurrah of summer (80 degrees and sunny today in Seattle before the rain starts).

Mediterraneo gets my vote for best in category of gorgeous lemon (and also best short-lived fragrance that I would rebuy despite that!)

I am wearing a few drops of Ambre Fetiche Parfum on my wrists. For me, this qualifies as the Best Classy Amber. By classy, I mean that it is absolutely a straight up and forceful amber, yet doesn’t smell at all like it is wafting up from a carved soapstone container on a head shop counter.

I could use an extra day this week.

Also in Puredistance, namely Antonia. Best in “My, it’s pretty, but boy, it’s expensive!” category. It made Mugler Surpra Floral look like a bargain in comparison; I will be content with that once my Anotnia decant is gone.

SOTD is Papillon Salmomé. The Best of the Best, IMO. Some might consider it the Worst of the Worst as it seems a bit polarizing, but I love it.

Thinking of all the folks along the southeastern shore of the US. I hope the barrier islands make it through ok…I was looking through my photos from my first contract on the North Carolina coast in Jacksonville. We took the ferry out to Ocracoke and camped for a few days. A storm had come through and Pamlico Sound was so rough, I thought they would suspend ferry service, but nope. It was a white knuckle ride and I didn’t even let the dog out of the van for fear she’d become airborne or get swept over. Ocracoke was the first dog friendly beach T-Rex ever experienced and she just loved zooming around sans leash. We have so many good memories that area. ❤️

Yes, I’m sure you’re right. I think Salomé would strangle me in anything greater than 60-70F temperatures. By the time I leave here, I’m pretty sure I’ll be a popsicle, and enjoying the heck out of all my heavier perfumes.

Wearing the best aldehydic floral, best rose jasmine champagne and best fragrance to bring glamour to mundane activities (like cleaning the floor or doing the washing). I’m wearing Amouage Gold Woman.
Guy Robert, the perfumer, considered it to be the crowning glory of his career and Luca Turin calls it Robert’s Bruckner’s Ninth. I just think it is stunning and I love it with all my heart.

I’m leaving for France tomorrow and I’m very much looking forward to it.

I love alliterations! I want to smell two scents again: Le Galion Ame perdue, and Pierre Bourdon La Fin d’un été.
I’m kind of planning to buy the latter as I don’t think this line will be around for very long, and I adore Sous les Magnolias that I got in March.
Other than that, I may make a visit to the Oriza L.Legrand store and I guess I will find it hard that amongst the tassels there will not be a bottle that I want to own. I adore their Marions-Nous (another aldehydic floral) and want to try their two latest fragrances and sniff their soaps …

Thanks for everyones good wishes! I have arrived in my tiny village in the Fontainebleau area, and have spent a lovely afternoon visiting the Abbaye de Royaumont on my way down here. It took a seriously long time to find it, but as I’m stubbornly still without a sat nav and need new reading glasses I needed a few more tries to finally get there.
I’m not at all religious but I just adore old abbeys and cathedrals. The guided tour here was very good and quite funny.

I had a plan. Frederic Malle iris hand cream and Purple Rain, which is my best in class of the Prada iris-centered perfumes–might even be best in class for iris altogether… but a funny thing happened on the way to the decant. I spotted that beautiful black glass macaroon of space-age violet, and knew my plan was derailed. So, I am happy in Stephen Jones for the duration, best in class of beautiful-weird.

If you live in or plan to visit the DC area, this is your periodic reminder that ylang ylang is blooming in a summer garden between the Freer and Sackler Galleries!

There is a wide sidewalk passage way between these two buildings (i.e., on the west side of the Sackler pavillion). Every summer, the Smithsonian lines that area with large potted plants (stored in a green house the rest of the year). The selection includes scented plants such as frangipani trees, gardenias, and, this year, a young ylang ylang tree.

The flowers are not very noticeable — twisty, green, dangly petals that eventually turn greenish yellow. This plant is easy to miss, so look carefully and follow your nose. The wonderful natural scent alone is worth a trip to the Mall, and there is currently a soulful exhibit of photos by Iranian women photographers at this gallery now.

I need to go back to sniff them again and see the Striking Iron exhibit (work of African iron smiths) at the neighboring Museum of African Art. Also wonderful is the Mary Livingston Garden between the Hirshorn and the Arts and Industries building, which is nearby.

At some point when the weather is decent, my folks and I are very interested in going to the Smithsonian. They have a number of new buildings since we’ve been there last. Mom and I especially want to see the Museum of African-American History, but the Museum of African Art is another one we’d like to see.

No-one else in my immediate family is interested in going to a perfume boutique. Most of my other relatives live in northern New Jersey or in New York state.

But it’s good to know what would be interesting to see or smell there in the museums and gardens.

Sous le Toit de Paris for best scent honoring a department store dome. It’s also a reference violet for me. A scent my husband urged me to buy when I was unsure, and which I now only wear occasionally since it is discontinued (and I got a 30 ml bottle). Luckily this thing has huge lasting power on me.

I have learned to trust my husband on a lot of purchases. He also urged me to get Oeillet Bengale. And pretty much every pair of shoes I bought at his prompting are the ones most complimented.

Ever since I got my bedroom set, my perfume collection is in a spot where I can’t get to right now. I am surviving on a full bottle of vintage Nicky and Mitsouko, Kyoto, Chanel no 5 and a couple large decants. All of my 1.5ml decants that I have some access to are from Andy Tauer. I am wearing PHI Rose de Kandahar today. I am not happy with the 1 and a half year old puppy. She has gotten a hold of a remote control and chewed it. She didn’t fully destroy it but I don’t have the time today to see if it works. I don’t know what her issue is but she has all of these Barkbox toys to play with, along with her dog brother and a lot of cuddles that she had to chew that.

I don’t know if you guys know, Andy Tauer has said on Facebook that he is releasing his new scent on September 15th and that is my birthday. I am so stoked.

I am 98 percent sure that the funds that I need won’t be in my bank account. Even though I am expecting a larger paycheck because of the holiday, it probably won’t happen without me trying a sample first. I wish I could blind buy for my birthday. Maybe around Thanksgiving or closer to Christmas.

I read in one of my dog books that dogs observe us a lot of the time, and if you handle that remote a lot, the puppy sees what a fun toy it is for you so why not for her, too? Also, it smells like you, which is comforting when one is home alone and perhaps anxious…I suggest you start playing with the barkbox toys :)

I’ll chime in to say they do not smell anything alike to me.
Although my impression of Casmir doesn’t match lillyjo’s description either, lol. I find it to be a fairly sweet vanilla and the coconut is pretty prominent to my nose. It’s one of the few vanillas I like, though I rarely crave it.

I finished reading The Emperor of Scent yesterday. The personalities are certainly interesting. I don’t know anything about physics, and I flunked organic chemistry in college. Organic chemistry was the point of the book, but I could relate to the interest in perfumes, and omnivorous reading. (Although I’m not a person who reads science textbooks for fun. lol) As a layperson on the subject, I didn’t have a horse in the race on theories about how the sense of smell works, but some of Dr. Turin’s peers seemed to be very bad at peer reviews. And some apparently had extremely entrenched ideas. That was rather frightening to me, that some scientists didn’t want to consider other theories about their fields of work.

SOTD is the best frightfully-cheerful-fruit salad Hendley Amora. It’s perfect for this grey, cool day. This perfume made me change my mind about fruity perfumes.
And an update on my post earlier this week about the woman who invited/disinvited me to her gathering last weekend. She sent me an email yesterday asking if I wanted to come over next weekend for a little strum-fest in her garden. So, I think she actually felt bad and was trying to make it up to me, which I appreciate. Though I’m just guessing about her motive.

Question: on me, Gris Clair and some other SLs (Five O’clock…, for example) get MORE intense in the hours after application. Normal? I learned quickly to apply with a very light hand (unless it was a “Perfume for bumming around the house” kind of day).

After a few extremely trying days, I woke up feeling like I’d had the last straw! I was all set to channel my inner Anna Wintour in vintage Miss Dior, best in the I’m a b*tch and you can stop sniveling or get out of my sight category. That feeling was quite empowering and gave me a major energy boost which I’m going to rely on in the future, but that attitude won’t play for me today! So instead, I pulled out two roses to sample: Papillon’s Bengale Rouge and JCE’s Rose de Mai for Perris Monte Carlo. (Note that I don’t usually like rose, so perhaps I’ve subconsciously given myself a new justification for feeling cantankerous, or then again maybe I should just march along with my cantankerous self. To quote Ms. Wintour, “If my style is too direct for some, maybe they should toughen up a bit.”

Bengale Rouge is stunning, and I feel that it definitely has the Liz Moores signature all over it. Initially, my skin definitely amped up the base notes which on me are quite thick, a bit sharp and resinous, with a touch of raw honey. Over several hours, to my surprise, a soft velvety rose note has finally emerged, along with a hint of warm powdery notes (supposedly iris). It’s sexy and cozy in a post-coital, comfortable-in-your-own-skin sort of way.

Rose de Mai is a pretty, simple rose soliflore. Tbh, it was so quiet it couldn’t stand a chance with Bengale Rouge in the room.

I would gladly send you my samples if the Canadian post will allow them through!

Best carnation if you like a lot of clove: DSH Oeillets Rouges, one of my favorites from her. It’s overcast here and I’d like to hike, but the chances of thunderstorms in the mountains are high, and I hate hiking in the mud. Fall is coming when rain enters into hiking decisions!

Oooooh. But that at least is a fun song. Not a rookie Nazi talking down to a young woman in an patronizing love song, just before he betrays her and her family. Still hoping the City of New Orleans will blot it out.

Covet is great, I would also vote it as the most unusual celebrity scent both in its combination of notes and the chameleonlike ability of those notes to change their emphasis each time I wear it.

SOTD for today’s cp is vintage Balenciaga Le Dix, my choice for best classic violet scent, a note I was surprised to fall in love with since I am not much of a floral fragrance lover. I’ve tried other violet scents since then but none have my❤️ like Le Dix. Discovered by accident in a set of minis gifted to me that sat on a closet shelf for years until I was cleaning that shelf, it’s also the fragrance that taught me about ‘aldehydes’ and the first fragrance that had me searching the Internet for perfume info and opening that Pandora’s box! So, for all those reasons, it gets my vote today.

Happy Friday to all and a good weekend ahead -hopefully, for me, too, as it’s been a lousy week of constantly shifting gears. We’re supposed to be on vacation – I should be listening to dulcimers right now at the Kentucky mountain music fest we love to attend – but for various reasons we nixed that plan and opted instead for a staycation with a couple of days of peaceful camping at our favorite nearby state park we were unable to get to last year. Well, that plan became iffy due to weather and then one of the cats somehow (indoor cat never goes outside) broke 3 metatarsal bones in her left paw. Yesterday’s vet trip resulted in a heavy splint/cast/sock up to her shoulder for 4-6 weeks. So now no trips and much of our staycation will be spent keeping her out of further trouble as the poor thing learns how to thump, thump through the house and that she is unable to jump very high. Ever try and tell a cat they are on ‘restricted activities’?

But when I look at the recent dive boat tragedy and see the results of Dorian’s ravages I realize my frustrations are First World problems. There’s always October’s fall colors to look forward to . . . Perhaps we’ll be able to get to our special place yet.

I was going to wear either Mugler Les Exceptions Orient Express or Bruno Fazzolari Au Dela as best reincarnation of classics (Shalimar or any classic grand floral, respectively).

However, I saw April Aromatics above and had to go with a favorite natural perfume, Elixir of Love.

Tomorrow is my mom’s memorial gathering followed by a repast luncheon. Since I know I would not be able to hold it together even just reading it, my brother-in-law who is facilitating the gathering, will read the bio / eulogy I wrote. I’m glad we’re having good weather tomorrow.

Best in Class: Transition from summer to fall fragrance

This one has been mentioned frequently lately, and finally brought it out today. I love it so much! I think I’m afraid of over-using it and falling out of love with it, so I don’t want to wear it too often, lol!

Best blind buy of the year, Miller Harris Wander. This perfume reminds me of the slighty damp and shady patches of nettles and weedy greens you get by small ponds and waterways on the edge of forests. I really like it and think I will get the other MH weedy perfumes . They are not Long lasting but far more ‘thoughtful’ and interesting than JM alternatives. For the past week the Leaves on the maples outside my window have just started to unfurl. They are so delicate , almost like watching butterflies emerge from a crysallis.

Dropping in again to say I stopped by Neiman Marcus today in search of a particular item of clothing, which I ended up having to order. On my way out I passed by the MFK part of the perfume area and spoke to the SA there. I smelled the new Gentle Fluidities on paper and decided to try a light spray of the Gold one. She thought I’d like it because it’s similar to Grand Soir, my favorite. Well, I like it fine now, three hours later, but for awhile Imfound it very screechy and sharp. I’m not sure why, but maybe the cardamom? It’s not going to dislodge GS any time soon! Across the aisle I saw an enormous display of Memo perfumes. I don’t remember seeing them there before. Marfa Spices was on special display so I sprayed and sniffed it. Very nice, but ooh the price! I had no idea! Lots of alternatives, so that’s not going on my buy list.

It’s a pity that one was discontinued so quickly.

Chiming in late after a hectic week! SOTD yesterday was Clouds’ Illusion from 4160 Tuesday’s, best in class crowdfunded fragrance. A very lovely lemony iris with narcissus, vanilla, white chocolate and other goodies. Its name is from Joni Mitchell’s song Both Sides Now. And my fragrance birthday gift to myself from Beauty Encounter arrived yesterday, so I’ll open it today! HBD to moi and the other September birthdays on NST!

So spent all week fretting and preparing for Hurricane Dorian, a storm that seemed compelled to effect every member of my immediate family from my sister in West Palm Beach to me in Virginia Beach and my Mom in Rhode Island. We have to put all the Bonsai back on the benches and clean up leaves and sticks but that is it. My meditation has been focused on help and healing for the Bahamas, my hope for them not just spiritual but monetary as well as soon as I determine where my money will do the most good. Just a spritz of Zoologist Bat on the front of my work shirt to get me through clean up!
