It's Friday, National Coffee Ice Cream Day and Read A Book Day. Our (unrelated) community project is Best in Class...you decide the category, then wear the best.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm wearing a dab of Fendi Theorema, the bestest creamsicle perfume ever.
Reminder: On 9/13, protect yourself from bad (Friday the 13th) juju with a Fierce Force Field Fragrance. Adapted from a suggestion by chocolatemarzipan.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In Lady Gaga Eau de Gaga. The best perfume in the celebrity category that I have tried and enjoy a lot so far.
Happy Friday, everyone!
Happy Friday!
That’s a great one. You smell wonderful!
Thank you! ?
Same category, different picks! That one was good, though.
It is indeed a good one!
I love that one too, it’s become a summer staple, and such a bargain to boot!
It is so pretty, refreshing and cheap. A great bargain for sure!
Good one!
Thanks!
I saw this at tj maxx the other day. Crazy good deal. All I remember from smelling it, when it came out, was that I liked it better than Fame.
I think Fame is nice, but not enough for me to wear it.
Queen by Queen Latifah is another celebrity favorite for colder temps.
That is a good one!
?
Sounds like Eau de Gaga is also a good one in the “grab & go” category!
It is a no-brainer and office friendly. Great for summer.
I’ve still never tried this one!
Hope you have the chance to try it soon!
Best in category:
“There’s over 160 bottles in this sodding fumedrobe and I still can’t decide what to wear. Bugger it, I’ll do…”
…Shalimar!
😀
LOL!
??
Ah! Shalimar
You smell great!
Lol! Shalimar is always the right choice 🙂
I’m with ya, Bob. Shalimar is always the right pick.
Yum, coffee ice cream is my favorite. There’s an old fashioned ice cream shop where my daughter goes to college that hand makes their ice cream daily and they have my all time favorite flavor: cappuccino Oreo.?
I’m in Casmir, because I saw it mentioned yesterday. The only bad thing about this fragrance is the bottle design. It’s hard to get the last remaining drops out because of it’s flat bottom.
TGIF! This has been a hectic week. Hoping for some downtime over the weekend. And some sun! It has only been out this week on the days I’ve been stuck inside at work.
Wow I’m swooning over that ice cream flavor
It is swoon worthy.? The last time I was there, I waited in line for 20 minutes just to get a dish. It was worth it, soooo creamy and delicious.
It sounds fabulous ?
Hope you get some sun and relaxation this weekend!
Thanks KellyC! Can you send some of that New Mexico sun my way??
I’m in vintage Hermes Doblis EDC, best in the category of Vintage Floral Leather That Really Needs To Be Splashed With Abandon. A very specific category, I realize, but seriously, people of Hermes, please find a way to reissue this! I could only afford a half-ml dab sample because it’s incredibly rare, but so gorgeous! I’m going to go apply the rest of the molecules I have left before they evaporate.
Perfumistas need specific categories! Enjoy your last molecules…
I have always longed to smell this one. I imagine it’s gorgeous. Enjoy those last drops!
I am in En Passant. It is the best lilac for my money and best non-huge floral perhaps.
Non-huge floral is a good description of EP. And it’s probably the best lilac for me too.
Have you ever tried Patou Vacances? Not just about lilac, but very gorgeous and light.
It sounds lovely
It is lovely.
A review of the original one:
https://boisdejasmin.com/2005/08/jean_patou_vaca.html
Wearing a bit of La Pausa this morning. Once this wears off I will probably switch to Iris Silver Mist.
PSA announcement – Not sure how many NST’ers use Chanel No 19 soap, but apparently it’s being discontinued. If you love it, get it now. I checked The Bay website, and it said limited quantity available.
whaat!
You will smell wonderful the whole day!
Noooo!!! I love that soap. Excuse me while I go stock up…
Am with the dismayed wailing. Will start checking out the local Shoppers and will let you know if anythings in stock…
I’m in Corsica Furiosa. Probably the best tomato leaf note ever, though I admittedly haven’t tried very many.
Agree! The best tomato leaf perfume so far! Did you finally find a full bottle?
Another great tomato leaf is in Memo Italian Leather.
I have been meaning to try Memo Italian Leather for a while. I need to remedy that very soon!
Thanks for the tip! Although I’m a bit put off by the word “leather” – it’s a challenging note for me. Is Italian Leather especially leathery?
It is leathery but in a very smooth way because it’s paired with a lot of gorgeous vanilla.
Not yet – still out of stock at Luckyscent and Beautyhabit – but I’m keeping my eyes peeled. Thanks again for the decant! This is one I probably never would’ve come across if not for the swapmeet.
That’s a good one! ❤️ My favorite warm weather perfume.
You smell great! Parfum d’Empire is such a reliable perfume house. I cannot wait for their upcoming release – Acqua di Scandola. It should lauch within a month now.
I would love to smell this, but noone here stocks it…?
Ys-Uzac Metaboles is a good tomato leaf perfume, it has hints of dry earth in the later stages.
I’m wearing Jubilation 25, queen of the chypres.
I agree!
Not quite the queen of chypre for me (for me that is actually a king, Chanel Pour Monsieur and a queen, Mitsouko) but a stunning fragrance none the less.
Aromatics Elixir.
Best bang for your buck/best affordable old school perfume.
I love AE.
Yaaaaaaaaas!!!! AE is just the best!
Need to sniff this next time I am at the mall!
Best of Chanel Exclusif Line
31 RC
Enabler book pin goes to OaklandF as I am holding my copies of The last of the wine and the king must die by Renault
Yesterday I had lots of family issues come up, nothing with my little ones or Mr L, but my extended family. I have been in a fog and would like to ask if you could send me some good energy to get though this. Karma works in mysterious ways.
I will showing up for the swap with some bottles.
Sending you positive vibes, ltsg. Hope everything gets resolved soon.
Sending good thoughts. I hope things get better for you soon.
Not only sending you positive energy, but wafting molecules of Ambre Fetiche Parfum your way (Best Classy Amber), for additional grace and fortitude.
I do love that Goutal!
Sending hugs – I know it’s trite, but try to take one day at a time.
Sending out positive thoughts for you and yours.
Sending you good thoughts for today.
Sending you and the family all kinds of good vibes! ?
Here’s some good juju for you!
Thinking of u, LTSG, and you’re family. Perfumed hugs coming you’re way.
Sending positive vibes. You smell great!
Sending you good energy. I am sorry about the knock off the axis–it is not a good feeling at all. Sometimes it is hard to read when news is bad, but I hope you are able to escape into a book at least for a bit.
This book package in the mail was so timely since I needed a pick me up
Sending some good energy your way ltsg.
Sending you positive energy and strength!
I’m hoping you get through your difficulties. Sending you hugs and warm wishes!
sending some positive energy your way….love 31, and yes it is the best of the line.
thanks all!
Sending good energy your way!
All the best to you and yours. And you do smell great.
Sending good vibes and positive energy to you through the universe. I totally agree with you about karma.
I’ll just waft some rose, jasmine and incense your way! I hate those kind of situations myself.
South Pacific vibes floating your way
Sending good vibes your way!
Do you palo santo? I like to clear the energy with smoke, best wishes for you and hope things are good. Sending good karma
Sending you calming vibes and a comforting cuppa, ltsg. Take care.
Sending you good energy, LTSG. I will light my incense for you.
Sending good vibes!
Positive thoughts headed your way LTSG! Hang in there.
Sending you loads of good energy and positive power to last the whole weekend through!!
HUGS, ltsg.
and you smelled great 🙂
Siiighhh and heellllp. I was going to wear Une Rose today for the CP but the sprayer on my travel spray wouldn’t depress! Like it is seriously stuck in the up position. Any advice? This is probably one of my top 5 but so expensive to replace… wah!
Instead I’m wearing Ivy Tower from Providence Perfume Co.
Can you decant the travel spray?
Oh no.
I have not tried them myself, but have you seen these links?
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+Repair+a+Jammed+Nozzle+on+a+Perfume+Bottle/120301
https://www.thriftyfun.com/tf43964155.tip.html
But I would get an empty atomizer before trying these methods, so that you can quickly transfer the contents in case things go wrong.
Oh my gosh, thanks for this! I will try it! And yes, I will take precautions…
You might also be able to call the FM store and see if they’ll replace it. It’s a luxury brand after all.
That is exactly what I would do.
And this clearly sounds like a defect in the mechanism.
Oh no!! Une Rose is the first big niche bought-it-in-France perfume that I have….love it. Still my fave in the Malle line
I usually try a little clean-up with an alcohol-soaked qtip when I run into that. Won’t help if it’s a mechanical issue, though.
No help but I’ve also had a broken Eau de Magnolia travel spray for the last year at least. I bought it from am individual not from any official source so have been unsure about reaching out to FM. However, I may go ahead and try it since it seems like a defect.
I’m going with Carthusia Mediterraneo for the last hurrah of summer (80 degrees and sunny today in Seattle before the rain starts).
Mediterraneo gets my vote for best in category of gorgeous lemon (and also best short-lived fragrance that I would rebuy despite that!)
enjoy re-applying!
I will add a vote for both categories!
This one is a beauty!
I am wearing a few drops of Ambre Fetiche Parfum on my wrists. For me, this qualifies as the Best Classy Amber. By classy, I mean that it is absolutely a straight up and forceful amber, yet doesn’t smell at all like it is wafting up from a carved soapstone container on a head shop counter.
I could use an extra day this week.
I am wanting an extra weekEND day already 😉
Earlier this week I bought some Nippon Kodo amber incense that also smells like Classy Amber to me. I love amber this time of year! I bet you smell marvelous.
My choice won’t surprise people who know me. I’m wearing Puredistance Opardu for it’s gorgeous lilac note. One of the best IMHO…
I’m not much for skank but I do really like Salome. ?
Oops, this was for Deva below…work interruptions…
Work interruptions are the worst! ?
this comment made my day, since it is completely taken out of context to your above post.
I have to work on my multitasking skills
?
Gorgeous, for sure!
You do smell beautiful indeed!
Also in Puredistance, namely Antonia. Best in “My, it’s pretty, but boy, it’s expensive!” category. It made Mugler Surpra Floral look like a bargain in comparison; I will be content with that once my Anotnia decant is gone.
Fancy!
SOTD is Papillon Salmomé. The Best of the Best, IMO. Some might consider it the Worst of the Worst as it seems a bit polarizing, but I love it.
Thinking of all the folks along the southeastern shore of the US. I hope the barrier islands make it through ok…I was looking through my photos from my first contract on the North Carolina coast in Jacksonville. We took the ferry out to Ocracoke and camped for a few days. A storm had come through and Pamlico Sound was so rough, I thought they would suspend ferry service, but nope. It was a white knuckle ride and I didn’t even let the dog out of the van for fear she’d become airborne or get swept over. Ocracoke was the first dog friendly beach T-Rex ever experienced and she just loved zooming around sans leash. We have so many good memories that area. ❤️
I think sometimes polarising fragrances are the best. At least they are not dull!
Very true! ?
Salome is a fantastic choice, i have a decant and love it. But not in the heat. Will wear it now that it is cooler…
Yes, I’m sure you’re right. I think Salomé would strangle me in anything greater than 60-70F temperatures. By the time I leave here, I’m pretty sure I’ll be a popsicle, and enjoying the heck out of all my heavier perfumes.
I had the chance to sniff Salome at Indigo a few months ago, and it’s one of the very few perfumes that actually made me say “Oh!” out loud. It’s both beautiful and scandalous. I could never wear it, but I would love to smell it on someone in the wild!
Yeah, she’s a vixen alright! ?
I remember your postings from your first journey out to NC. You missed your bottles at home at lot.
I did! When I went home I packed them all up except a few. I have a full bottle of Musc Ravaguer and the Lancôme leather, which I can’t remember the name of. Also a Tauer and a couple of others. All sitting patiently in refrigerator.
You smell scandalously wonderful in Salome. I almost bought a bottle of it when I was at the Scent Bar in January, but the guy behind the counter actually talked me out of it. I wish I hadn’t let him sway me!
Goodness, why would he talk you out of it? Seems counterintuitive to me. I have plenty if you want a decant? I’m sending out a couple of various decants next week, so I can add you on if you like. You can email me at taiga101 in the land of yahooligans if you’re interested.
I will be getting reports from Mr. Jalapeno as he drives back from FL. Hopefully he won’t have a lot of detours due to road damage. The news footage from the Carolinas gave me goose bumps in the bad way.
I know! Very sad. Hope everything went ok with Mr J and his Florida family!
They’re fine! The worst thing that they experienced with Dorian were some downed palm fronds and tree branches.
Best bedroom scent as far as I am concerned.
Wearing the best aldehydic floral, best rose jasmine champagne and best fragrance to bring glamour to mundane activities (like cleaning the floor or doing the washing). I’m wearing Amouage Gold Woman.
Guy Robert, the perfumer, considered it to be the crowning glory of his career and Luca Turin calls it Robert’s Bruckner’s Ninth. I just think it is stunning and I love it with all my heart.
I’m leaving for France tomorrow and I’m very much looking forward to it.
Love your choice of fragrance, Robin, and the category.
You smell fantastic in Gold Woman! Enjoy your trip!
Man you are making me want to try that! I have heard so many good things about Gold but haven’t sniffed it yet!
Bon voyage and give my regards to the Champs Elysee
Have a great trip austenfan! I hope you find some scented souvenirs.
Adding another bon voyage…have a great trip!
Bon voyage! I’ll be with you in spirit. Have a wonderful trip to my favorite place!
I love this one, too. Bon voyage!
Have a wonderful holiday. September is such a beautiful month, the light is so golden
Bon voyage!
Safe travels! I hope your trip is everything that you wish it to be.
safe travels
I love Gold too, it’s my dress up scent! Have a wonderful time in France, are you planning any particular perfume purchases? (Yes, I did enjoy writing that).
I love alliterations! I want to smell two scents again: Le Galion Ame perdue, and Pierre Bourdon La Fin d’un été.
I’m kind of planning to buy the latter as I don’t think this line will be around for very long, and I adore Sous les Magnolias that I got in March.
Other than that, I may make a visit to the Oriza L.Legrand store and I guess I will find it hard that amongst the tassels there will not be a bottle that I want to own. I adore their Marions-Nous (another aldehydic floral) and want to try their two latest fragrances and sniff their soaps …
Sorry for the late reply, but time difference and a longish journey.
Thanks for everyones good wishes! I have arrived in my tiny village in the Fontainebleau area, and have spent a lovely afternoon visiting the Abbaye de Royaumont on my way down here. It took a seriously long time to find it, but as I’m stubbornly still without a sat nav and need new reading glasses I needed a few more tries to finally get there.
I’m not at all religious but I just adore old abbeys and cathedrals. The guided tour here was very good and quite funny.
Best in Class: celebrity scents – Pharrel Williams Girl. So, of course, it’s discontinued and I should have bought it when I had the chance.
Still buyable! So cheap on Fragrancenet!!
Time to take a look, thanks!
Nice one! You can still find it at some of the discounters.
I think I’ve got a huge bottle of that laying around somewhere – if I remember, we can do a swap!
I’m wearing Moonlight Patchouli by Van Cleef & Arpels. Now that the weather cooled down to 19*C today it feels just about right.
It’s a best in class… iris perfume without iris in the name.
Tried that one this week- it’s SO good!
It’s magical 🙂
I just bought a travel spray of MP at a discounter for a great price. I never looked up the notes and didn’t realize that it was an iris scent. It’s no wonder I like it. You smell great!
So glad you have a bit for yourself.
Best iris? You have created a lemming!
Best perfume that I bought for my birthday – – DSH Slinky Carnation (custom)
?❤️
No doubts! ?
What can be better! It’s a nice one for sure.
Brilliant choice
Slam dunk!
Good morning and Happy FriYAY once again!
Back in my current love: Gucci Mémoire d’une Odeur.
Best in class for chamomile scents! 🙂
Best in class for pretty green glass bottle….
Best in class for 2019 new discoveries for Jada….
Have a great weekend y’all….
It really does have the prettiest bottle and box.
?
I had a plan. Frederic Malle iris hand cream and Purple Rain, which is my best in class of the Prada iris-centered perfumes–might even be best in class for iris altogether… but a funny thing happened on the way to the decant. I spotted that beautiful black glass macaroon of space-age violet, and knew my plan was derailed. So, I am happy in Stephen Jones for the duration, best in class of beautiful-weird.
You get an enabler pin for your tiara Oakland. Your description of raining violets for Violette Sacree led to a fb purchase for my recent bday. ?
Oh that one is so pretty. Purple flowers, woods, petrichor…
(Am adjusting my tiara so that enabler baubles are balanced. . . Must say, looking good Oakland Fresca. Looking good. 😉 )
This bauble is purple, of course. ?
Happy belated Birthday! I think I missed it.
Thanks lillyjo…I didn’t mention it at the time. So you didn’t miss it.
Aw, belated birthday wishes from me too, Petunia!
Thank uou! ?
Adding my belated birthday wishes, I hope that you had a great day! I happen to love violet fragrances.
TY Gail. Our days are pretty close together!
Happy belated Petunia! Sounds like you got yourself a beautiful birthday present.
If you live in or plan to visit the DC area, this is your periodic reminder that ylang ylang is blooming in a summer garden between the Freer and Sackler Galleries!
There is a wide sidewalk passage way between these two buildings (i.e., on the west side of the Sackler pavillion). Every summer, the Smithsonian lines that area with large potted plants (stored in a green house the rest of the year). The selection includes scented plants such as frangipani trees, gardenias, and, this year, a young ylang ylang tree.
The flowers are not very noticeable — twisty, green, dangly petals that eventually turn greenish yellow. This plant is easy to miss, so look carefully and follow your nose. The wonderful natural scent alone is worth a trip to the Mall, and there is currently a soulful exhibit of photos by Iranian women photographers at this gallery now.
I need to go back to sniff them again and see the Striking Iron exhibit (work of African iron smiths) at the neighboring Museum of African Art. Also wonderful is the Mary Livingston Garden between the Hirshorn and the Arts and Industries building, which is nearby.
Also, for Ormonde Jayne fans, founder Linda Pilkington will be at Arielle Shoshana this Saturday, September 8, from 1-3 PM.
Well that created a travel to DC lemming! We moved away 15 years ago, and I’ve only been back a couple of times for work–never for play!
It’s really worth it, as long as you can avoid the times of highest heat and humidity. (As you well know from living here.)
Thanks for the information!
You’re welcome — enjoy!
Yikes, the event is SUNDAY, not Saturday! I hope you see this in time if you plan to attend!
At some point when the weather is decent, my folks and I are very interested in going to the Smithsonian. They have a number of new buildings since we’ve been there last. Mom and I especially want to see the Museum of African-American History, but the Museum of African Art is another one we’d like to see.
No-one else in my immediate family is interested in going to a perfume boutique. Most of my other relatives live in northern New Jersey or in New York state.
But it’s good to know what would be interesting to see or smell there in the museums and gardens.
I believe it’s best to get tickets in advance for the MA-AH. I haven’t been organized yet, but I hear it’s well worth it.
I always forget- and really shouldn’t- that the National Mall and DC in general is actually a rather beautiful and easy city to visit on a vacation- with a surprise or two around the corners!
The three museums I mentioned are not mobbed, either, unlike some of the most popular museum.
And there are many wonderful, lesser visited locations such the Hillwood Estate, Dumbarton Oaks, and the National Cathedral.
Yes!
And a great way to experience the city without too many crowds.
CORRECTION!
There is a second email from Ari that I overlooked in my search search — the Ormonde Jayne event is SUNDAY, September 8.
NOT Saturday.
I would love to be able to go there and sniff! Ylang-ylang is one of my favorite floral notes, and to sniff it living is a dream of mine. 🙂
Have a great weekend!
Sounds amazing.
Sous le Toit de Paris for best scent honoring a department store dome. It’s also a reference violet for me. A scent my husband urged me to buy when I was unsure, and which I now only wear occasionally since it is discontinued (and I got a 30 ml bottle). Luckily this thing has huge lasting power on me.
I have learned to trust my husband on a lot of purchases. He also urged me to get Oeillet Bengale. And pretty much every pair of shoes I bought at his prompting are the ones most complimented.
Oh, and coffee ice cream is THE BEST. I used to eat copious amounts of the Haagen Das version when I could do such things.
I wish my hubs would urge me to buy perfume! ?
Wow, me too!
Me too, ElisaP!
Doesn’t happen for me either. Lucky you, LizzieB! ?
Sous le Toit is so wonderful. You smell divine!
Love your category! I have one of those gigantic bottles, so let me know if you would like some.
Twins! I picked this one as my best in class summer violet. Feeling happy I got the 200ml bottle now that it’s discontinued. Oeillet Bengale is pretty awesome too!
Ever since I got my bedroom set, my perfume collection is in a spot where I can’t get to right now. I am surviving on a full bottle of vintage Nicky and Mitsouko, Kyoto, Chanel no 5 and a couple large decants. All of my 1.5ml decants that I have some access to are from Andy Tauer. I am wearing PHI Rose de Kandahar today. I am not happy with the 1 and a half year old puppy. She has gotten a hold of a remote control and chewed it. She didn’t fully destroy it but I don’t have the time today to see if it works. I don’t know what her issue is but she has all of these Barkbox toys to play with, along with her dog brother and a lot of cuddles that she had to chew that.
I don’t know if you guys know, Andy Tauer has said on Facebook that he is releasing his new scent on September 15th and that is my birthday. I am so stoked.
Are you going to blind buy it for your birthday?
I am 98 percent sure that the funds that I need won’t be in my bank account. Even though I am expecting a larger paycheck because of the holiday, it probably won’t happen without me trying a sample first. I wish I could blind buy for my birthday. Maybe around Thanksgiving or closer to Christmas.
He used to occasionally publish a magazine, and gave the option to purchase a sample of his latest offering along with, but I haven’t seen one offered in quite awhile.
I think you are not alone. I recently saw an amusing twitter thread about dogs chewing remote controls. I wonder if it is the smells…so many hands touching….
probably leaving tasty snack smells… I think you are onto something!
Ooh what a birthday surprise! I saw his announcement too and am excited for the unveiling. Sad that it sounds like there’s no chance of anything smaller than a full size bottle being shipped to the US.
I know Surrender to Chance and The Perfumed Court will have decants soon.
Oh yeah! Somehow it didn’t occur to me to check the decanters.
I read in one of my dog books that dogs observe us a lot of the time, and if you handle that remote a lot, the puppy sees what a fun toy it is for you so why not for her, too? Also, it smells like you, which is comforting when one is home alone and perhaps anxious…I suggest you start playing with the barkbox toys 🙂
Everytime I’ve come to post today, I got interrupted. 3rd times a charm, right? My sotd is Superstitious. Best in Class for best modern aldehyde. I know not everyone would agree, but I really really love it! Happy Friday everyone ?
I’ve only tried Superstitious dabbed but I am sure you smell wonderful!
Oh, I almost blind bought Casmir. Do you know if it’s anything like vintage Arpege?
I’ve never smelled any form of Arpege. Casmir smells to me like really dry wood and non sweet vanilla.
On me Casmir is supersweet vanilla with coconut (my skin always amps up the sweet notes)
I’ll chime in to say they do not smell anything alike to me.
Although my impression of Casmir doesn’t match lillyjo’s description either, lol. I find it to be a fairly sweet vanilla and the coconut is pretty prominent to my nose. It’s one of the few vanillas I like, though I rarely crave it.
I have to go smell it so I can find the coconut!
Well drats! I read reviews that mentioned amber and peachy powdery so was reminded of Arpege. One of my vintage loves. The current version of Arpege doesn’t work for me. Thanks to you both for your thoughts.
ha! I just repeated what you said up above-LOL!
No relation to vintage Arpege that I can tell, either. I don’t get any fruit with Casmir, though.
Hmmm. It’s mentioned in some of the reviews. Maybe they were older bottles?
You smell gorgeous!!
Thank you!
I love superstitious too. It is on my “one day…..” buy list.
Same. Honestly that price is pretty crazy!
Happy Friday!
LOVE Superstitious! But, yeah the price of a FB is scary!
Winner or at least well up there for the best lily-of-the-valley perfume: Vintage Diorissimo — mmmm.
Yup. You smell wonderful!
Second that!
Thank you, ladies! I took my bath, and put more of the Diorissimo right back on. I wasn’t ready to be finished enjoying it. 🙂
I finished reading The Emperor of Scent yesterday. The personalities are certainly interesting. I don’t know anything about physics, and I flunked organic chemistry in college. Organic chemistry was the point of the book, but I could relate to the interest in perfumes, and omnivorous reading. (Although I’m not a person who reads science textbooks for fun. lol) As a layperson on the subject, I didn’t have a horse in the race on theories about how the sense of smell works, but some of Dr. Turin’s peers seemed to be very bad at peer reviews. And some apparently had extremely entrenched ideas. That was rather frightening to me, that some scientists didn’t want to consider other theories about their fields of work.
No doubts in my mind… vintage Diorissimo IS the best!
Yes, I’m going to go with that as the winner. 🙂 It’s very lovely.
Great choice! Vintage Diorissimo is a treasure!
I’ve had *way* too much fun shopping at the Surrender to Chance site this past year or so. I’ve discovered some really nice fragrances among the samples I’ve gotten. 🙂
Happy Friday, Lillyjo! ??
Oops! In the wrong place!
Glad that I am in good company today! ?
Hi twin! ???
To you too!
My SOTD is April Aromatics Calling All Angels. Best natural perfume and best incense perfume. I am wondering why I don’t wear it more often. No pun intended, but this truly is heavenly.
I agree! You smell heavenly! ?
Love that brand! I finally chose Elixir of Love, but I’m glad I have the generous sample set.
Happy Friday!
1) Recovering from First Thursday partying. Ooff. Party til teh break of dawn…
1a) then go to work. Yikes.
2) I am wearing Joy, which is best in class for everything, and feels really right for the final edge of summer.

Last week, we met up for friends on a Thursday when they did not have work the next day but we did. Never again! I’m just too old for midweek fun 🙁
Oh, yes- just dragging yourself in the morning after midweek fun is just too much now!
Hi twin! ???
Something is wrong today for sure. I am not even clicking twice. ??
Ha! Glad to know that I am in good company with wonky posting (at least yours didn’t duplicate in the same place-LOL!)
SOTD is the best frightfully-cheerful-fruit salad Hendley Amora. It’s perfect for this grey, cool day. This perfume made me change my mind about fruity perfumes.
And an update on my post earlier this week about the woman who invited/disinvited me to her gathering last weekend. She sent me an email yesterday asking if I wanted to come over next weekend for a little strum-fest in her garden. So, I think she actually felt bad and was trying to make it up to me, which I appreciate. Though I’m just guessing about her motive.
Hopefully this invitation will not end up like the last one.
Ha! That would be something!
I hope her gesture made you feel better.
I haven’t tried your SOTD but fruit salad perfume sounds good to me.
Thanks Petunia ?This is a really nice fruit salad- smells very natural to me ?? There’s a nice creamy musk in the base and a subtle hint of rose and maybe a hint of wine, too.
Are you going to go?
I actually can’t since I have a drumming performance that day- I might’ve otherwise. The annoying part is that I’m thinking she’ll think I’m doing it out of spite or something, which I should probably just drop since I didn’t create this little conundrum for her.
I’m glad she’s making an effort to make up for her rudeness to u.
Maybe she hasn’t finished washing up and cleaning from the big party last week and needs your help??!!
I hope she actually realized how rude she was!
I’m kind of glad you can’t make it to the next invite. It’s setting off my drama detector. Then again, I’m a bit of a cynic about that sort of stuff.
Mmm you smell great! I’m so glad you love that perfume and raved about it here. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have known to try it, and I’m just as crazy about it as you are. ?
Gris Clair–best cool, grey day scent. Maybe later I will warm up with some Poet’s Jasmine from Ineke to celebrate the last days of summer, even if It doesn’t feel like it today….everybody getting ready to swap till you drop??!!
Ooh, lucky you! If it were cool and grey here I would copy your choice. Love Gris Clair.
Question: on me, Gris Clair and some other SLs (Five O’clock…, for example) get MORE intense in the hours after application. Normal? I learned quickly to apply with a very light hand (unless it was a “Perfume for bumming around the house” kind of day).
I find that most of the Lutens seem to live loud on me and I have learned to apply with a light hand. I don’t know if they are more intense, but they do seem to stay intense. Love them
Scent twins, for pretty much the same category – mine was cool rainy day perfumes. We smell great! 🙂
Oh smelly twin, you smell wonderful.
Gris Clair is also my favorite for a grey, rainy day. You smell really good.
After a few extremely trying days, I woke up feeling like I’d had the last straw! I was all set to channel my inner Anna Wintour in vintage Miss Dior, best in the I’m a b*tch and you can stop sniveling or get out of my sight category. That feeling was quite empowering and gave me a major energy boost which I’m going to rely on in the future, but that attitude won’t play for me today! So instead, I pulled out two roses to sample: Papillon’s Bengale Rouge and JCE’s Rose de Mai for Perris Monte Carlo. (Note that I don’t usually like rose, so perhaps I’ve subconsciously given myself a new justification for feeling cantankerous, or then again maybe I should just march along with my cantankerous self. To quote Ms. Wintour, “If my style is too direct for some, maybe they should toughen up a bit.”
Enjoyed your post!
Oh, I’m glad!
I hope the weekend gives you a break and a chance to unwind.
Thank you, Kanuka. I hope you’re enjoying your weekend.
So what did you think of Bengale Rouge and Rose de Mai? I’m looking forward to trying both of them.
Bengale Rouge is stunning, and I feel that it definitely has the Liz Moores signature all over it. Initially, my skin definitely amped up the base notes which on me are quite thick, a bit sharp and resinous, with a touch of raw honey. Over several hours, to my surprise, a soft velvety rose note has finally emerged, along with a hint of warm powdery notes (supposedly iris). It’s sexy and cozy in a post-coital, comfortable-in-your-own-skin sort of way.
Rose de Mai is a pretty, simple rose soliflore. Tbh, it was so quiet it couldn’t stand a chance with Bengale Rouge in the room.
I would gladly send you my samples if the Canadian post will allow them through!
Post-coital, honeyed rose sounds great! ?
That is so sweet of you! Chocolatemarzipan has gotten them through sandwiched between teabags, so it is possible. 🙂 My email is my user name @me.com. Thank you. 🙂
I’m wearing Marni by Marni, best in class for cooler weather no brainer spicey fragrance, and a contender for best in class designer bottle too (polka dots!! Shiny red cap!).
Just thinking about Marni today…I may need to track some down–Attention Swappers!
I swapped for a travel spray a year or so ago, and the little bottle is so cute! I hope you find some Marni tomorrow. You smell fab.
Best carnation if you like a lot of clove: DSH Oeillets Rouges, one of my favorites from her. It’s overcast here and I’d like to hike, but the chances of thunderstorms in the mountains are high, and I hate hiking in the mud. Fall is coming when rain enters into hiking decisions!
OaklandFresca, thanks to you I’ve got “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat” going since yesterday!
Oooooh. But that at least is a fun song. Not a rookie Nazi talking down to a young woman in an patronizing love song, just before he betrays her and her family. Still hoping the City of New Orleans will blot it out.
Best cheapie, best celebrity scent… Covet.
Now wearing Calligraphy Saffron, which might be best of saffron scents…
Shakshuka for dinner and a red wine from provence, called Cul de Loup
Oh yes, +1 for Covet!
+2 and twins!
Covet is great, I would also vote it as the most unusual celebrity scent both in its combination of notes and the chameleonlike ability of those notes to change their emphasis each time I wear it.
Can I come over for dinner? 😀
Robin, you smell wonderful!!
I’m wearing Shiseido Feminite du Bois, the absolute best fruity/spicy/woody oriental, imho! ? I also have a bottle of the SL version which is not quite as good, but will have to do when the original runs out. ?
Great choice! Love vintage FdB.
?
Infusion d’Iris — best in class of “I woke up way too early and now where has the extra time gone help me get out of the house PLEASE” scents. IOW, a no-brainer that I can enjoy all day without worrying about offending anyone else’s nose.
SOTD for today’s cp is vintage Balenciaga Le Dix, my choice for best classic violet scent, a note I was surprised to fall in love with since I am not much of a floral fragrance lover. I’ve tried other violet scents since then but none have my❤️ like Le Dix. Discovered by accident in a set of minis gifted to me that sat on a closet shelf for years until I was cleaning that shelf, it’s also the fragrance that taught me about ‘aldehydes’ and the first fragrance that had me searching the Internet for perfume info and opening that Pandora’s box! So, for all those reasons, it gets my vote today.
Happy Friday to all and a good weekend ahead -hopefully, for me, too, as it’s been a lousy week of constantly shifting gears. We’re supposed to be on vacation – I should be listening to dulcimers right now at the Kentucky mountain music fest we love to attend – but for various reasons we nixed that plan and opted instead for a staycation with a couple of days of peaceful camping at our favorite nearby state park we were unable to get to last year. Well, that plan became iffy due to weather and then one of the cats somehow (indoor cat never goes outside) broke 3 metatarsal bones in her left paw. Yesterday’s vet trip resulted in a heavy splint/cast/sock up to her shoulder for 4-6 weeks. So now no trips and much of our staycation will be spent keeping her out of further trouble as the poor thing learns how to thump, thump through the house and that she is unable to jump very high. Ever try and tell a cat they are on ‘restricted activities’?
But when I look at the recent dive boat tragedy and see the results of Dorian’s ravages I realize my frustrations are First World problems. There’s always October’s fall colors to look forward to . . . Perhaps we’ll be able to get to our special place yet.
Ooof, good luck with the cat! So true, those before and after photos of the Bahamas and Abaco really put everything else in perspective.
Yes, this. The devastation is beyond belief.
Awww, dang it on many levels 🙁 best wishes to your poor kitty! And yes, fall isn’t even official yet so there’s lots of time ahead for pretty scenery. Everything will work out.
Oh no! Hope your cats gets well soon!
Poor kitty! I love Le Dix, too.
Poor kitty! Hope all is well quickly.
Aw, your poor kitty! Sending healing thoughts.
Yes, I have tried to tell a cat that they are on limited physical activity before. Didn’t go so well. ?
I was going to wear either Mugler Les Exceptions Orient Express or Bruno Fazzolari Au Dela as best reincarnation of classics (Shalimar or any classic grand floral, respectively).
However, I saw April Aromatics above and had to go with a favorite natural perfume, Elixir of Love.
Love Oriental Express and Au Dela. Haven’t smelled Elixir of Love, will put it on the list!
I left the house without scent this morning, whoops! I have a perfume solid of Diptyque Philosykos in my purse so just applied that. Smelling of the best fig in the fig options.
Yes it’s a fantastic fig! And you smell wonderful.
SOTD = Le Labo Vanille 44
Best in Class Category: Best Le Labo City Exclusive

I’m running low but have a backup decant; however, for science, I may utilize the Barneys offer where you get 20% off the refill.
Tomorrow is my mom’s memorial gathering followed by a repast luncheon. Since I know I would not be able to hold it together even just reading it, my brother-in-law who is facilitating the gathering, will read the bio / eulogy I wrote. I’m glad we’re having good weather tomorrow.
Hugs, Hajusuuri.
I hope tomorrow will go well for you and yours hajusuuri! And how kind of your brother-in-law.
I am thinking of you and your family with love, and I hope that tomorrow will be a joyful reminder of the person who brings you all together.
Sending hugs!
I know you will do well, Hajusuuri. Best wishes for a healing day tomorrow.
My condolences, and *hugs*
Wishing you the best for the service.
I hope the memorial will be beautiful, even if you do shed some tears!
My condolences and best wishes for the memorial. May your sweet memories and love console you.
Oh gosh! I wouldnt be able to hold it
together either. I’m happy your words will be heard. Your BIL is a champ. Will you wear a spine stiffening perfume? Something soft and gentle? Or go commando?
I will wear SSS Bee’s Bliss because bees now remind me of mom. ?, The scent is soft enough and barely floral and passed mom’s smell test (she used to make comments about almost every perfume I wore, but never this one)!
Aww, lovely choice. Sending hugs as you remember your mom.
Wonderful choice of perfume.
?
May the community of love surround you tomorrow and bring comfort to your ♥️.
Hugs to you.
I will be thinking of you tomorrow. I know your words will be a beautiful tribute to your mother. Peace to your family.
Oh dear. I think you made the right decision. It’s great after all that you wrote the memorial/eulogy. My sympathy.
Hugs to you. My sister will never, ever get up to speak, so I did for my mom. I wept through it, but that’s okay.
Thank you, you’re braver than me!
Hugs to you, hajusuuri. May you find comfort in the presence of your family, and know that you will be held in my thoughts.
So sorry for your loss. hajusuuri. I couldn’t speak at my father’s service either so I understand. Hugs to you.
I hope that tomorrow is a day filled with wonderful and yet bittersweet memories. Please enjoy the time spent with family. ❤️
Best wishes for the memorial service tomorrow hajusuuri. I remember speaking at my father’s funeral. It was one of the hardest things I have done. But NOT doing it would have been even harder. Hugs.
Sending you and your family comforting thoughts for tomorrow. I love your thoughtful choice of fragrance.
Big hugs to you, h.
Best wishes to you! Such an emotional occasion. I couldn’t have spoken at my mother’s memorial service either, but I did find the service and reception after to be very comforting,. I hope you too find comfort.
Cap Neroli for the first time. I can totally understand why this one is so loved!
Such a radiant orange blossom!
SOTD: Eau des Merveilles
Best in Class: Transition from summer to fall fragrance
This one has been mentioned frequently lately, and finally brought it out today. I love it so much! I think I’m afraid of over-using it and falling out of love with it, so I don’t want to wear it too often, lol!
Tonight will switch to Parfum des Merveilles. They’re both perfect for today, since it is only in the 60’s, and overcast. Farewell, summer!
Such a good one!!
I’m with you on EdM, it’s in my top 5. Once the weather cools, I switch to the Ambre version, but it doesn’t last as long and although I enjoy it I don’t love it like the original.
Best blind buy of the year, Miller Harris Wander. This perfume reminds me of the slighty damp and shady patches of nettles and weedy greens you get by small ponds and waterways on the edge of forests. I really like it and think I will get the other MH weedy perfumes . They are not Long lasting but far more ‘thoughtful’ and interesting than JM alternatives. For the past week the Leaves on the maples outside my window have just started to unfurl. They are so delicate , almost like watching butterflies emerge from a crysallis.
The maples here in Canada are just starting to turn red. It’s nice to think of yours gently unfurling tender green on the other side of the planet.
mmmm, that sounds lovely.
Best Hermessence: Cuir d’Ange
Also best soft floral leather, I think. But I’d be happy to hear other soft leather suggestions!
Deva, if you’re reading, I’m wearing the Ordinary Serum foundation today. It might be sheerer than what your’re looking for, but I really like the texture of it and it’s much cheaper!
Cheaper is almost always better! Where did you find yours? It’s been on my radar for a while but then I heard the company went under or stopped manufacturing for some reason or another. I’ve never seen it anywhere…
theordinary.com
It’s under “colours” where you find the foundation!
Oh, well shoot. I have to sample first, so I’d need to find it in store. Thanks anyway!
My favourite soft leather is Bottega Veneta.
🙂
Me too…although it really fits into my favorite overall leather category…..
My favorite soft leather is the sadly d/c’ed Cuir de Lancome.
I have that and like it a lot! I really love their “Buffet” serum. My usual foundation, which I find quite sheer, is Neutrogena Healthy Skin.
Beach air and sand. With a sprinkling of 24F.
Oh, enjoy your day! I know you love the beach. ?
Peeeeerefect!
Gorgeous!
Lovely combination!
All of that sounds so good. Hope you had a fantastic day!
I’m testing Bulgari au the Bleu on my left arm and TDC Bois d’Iris on my right. The Bulgari has had some mentions recently, and now I see why! This is a wonderful tea scent. The TDC didn’t last very long, sad to say. Am I the only one who has longevity issues with this one?
I have a dab of Dzing! on my knuckle for CP points. The best weirdo fragrance in my stash. ❤️
Au the Bleu is one of my favorite perfumes. I like to wear it in the evening.
Unfortunately, Bois d’Iris was also short-lived when I tried it a couple of times.
Au de Bleu is a big favorite. Beautiful and comfy.
One of my favorite weirdos… Good in cooler weather
Best is hard for me . I’m wearing OJ Frangpiani which is perhaps the best tropical floral in my collection.
Definitely up there for me as well! You smell fab.
Gloomy day today. At least the temperatures are nice. ☁☁☁
SOTD = TF Orchid Soleil EdP, from the sample stash. It’s best in class for “Slightly Tacky White Beachy Florals”. And I say that as someone who enjoys this scent very much. ?
Ha! Perfect description! Super gloomy here too.
Thanks lillyjo!
Nice one! It’s really gloomy, cold and windy here today too.
Not so much cold and windy for me today. Maybe the sun will be back tomorrow?
Perfect description….and I love it ha!
Thanks KellyC! Good luck with the move!
I happen to like quite a few beachy scents! I’ve even been known to put on Coppertone sunscreen or Bain du Soleil orange gelee as a moisturizer for my ‘scentfree office’ workday lotion.
Hope you have a beach day tomorrow!
Thanks Gail! The weather is supposed to improve tomorrow. It definitely would be nice to get down to the beach one day before autumn well and truly shows up.
There can never be too many slightly tacky white beach florals for sure!
I have had a very busy work day and have only read a handful of posts. I’ll have to catch up after work. But I wore a best in class neroli perfume, Neroli Dore.
Cousins in neroli lol. I haven’t tried that one but am in Cap Neroli today.
Dropping in again to say I stopped by Neiman Marcus today in search of a particular item of clothing, which I ended up having to order. On my way out I passed by the MFK part of the perfume area and spoke to the SA there. I smelled the new Gentle Fluidities on paper and decided to try a light spray of the Gold one. She thought I’d like it because it’s similar to Grand Soir, my favorite. Well, I like it fine now, three hours later, but for awhile Imfound it very screechy and sharp. I’m not sure why, but maybe the cardamom? It’s not going to dislodge GS any time soon! Across the aisle I saw an enormous display of Memo perfumes. I don’t remember seeing them there before. Marfa Spices was on special display so I sprayed and sniffed it. Very nice, but ooh the price! I had no idea! Lots of alternatives, so that’s not going on my buy list.
I’m going to the opening night of Giselle at the ballet tonight, and excited about it. A friend was given free tickets. Yay!
Ohhh I love the ballet! Enjoy!
I hope the ballet was wonderful! I love Giselle too. Did you know that ballerina Carla Fracci issued a series of fragrances and one is called Giselle? It’s very pretty.
Wearing Tom Ford Sahara Noir- the best incense ever!
It’s a pity that one was discontinued so quickly.
Agree! Hope some day they reissue it.
Wore Kenzo Amour during the day and Elephant at night. best rice and best cardamom? No CP points for me. Had a challenging week and work and my brain is fried-LOL!
Chiming in late after a hectic week! SOTD yesterday was Clouds’ Illusion from 4160 Tuesday’s, best in class crowdfunded fragrance. A very lovely lemony iris with narcissus, vanilla, white chocolate and other goodies. Its name is from Joni Mitchell’s song Both Sides Now. And my fragrance birthday gift to myself from Beauty Encounter arrived yesterday, so I’ll open it today! HBD to moi and the other September birthdays on NST!
So spent all week fretting and preparing for Hurricane Dorian, a storm that seemed compelled to effect every member of my immediate family from my sister in West Palm Beach to me in Virginia Beach and my Mom in Rhode Island. We have to put all the Bonsai back on the benches and clean up leaves and sticks but that is it. My meditation has been focused on help and healing for the Bahamas, my hope for them not just spiritual but monetary as well as soon as I determine where my money will do the most good. Just a spritz of Zoologist Bat on the front of my work shirt to get me through clean up!
