Wednesday scent of the day 9/4

Posted by Robin on 4 September 2019 290 Comments

Hump Day plus Wildlife Day plus Newspaper Carrier Day. (Are there any newspaper carriers left?) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in the best no-brainer iris, Prada Infusion d'Iris.

Reminder: on 9/6 we're doing Best in Class...you decide the category, then wear the best.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It’s definitely a “reference” vetiver! A perfect way to discover what the note smells like.

I think that Annick Goutal Vetiver is the best vetiver scent ever. However, I was not able to wear it no matter how many times I tried.

I’m in Jour d’Hermes, the best in the sunshine-in-a-bottle category. I’m feeling contrary today – for the past couple of warm and sunny weeks I’ve been craving cool-weather scents, but our weather has (very suddenly, it seems) turned a bit autumnal this morning and I find myself wanting summer to go on a bit longer. No pleasing me, I guess. ;)

I wore Jour d’Hermes as a signature scent for over a year when it came out. Then I got a bad case of heatstroke at an Ag Fair, and it made me nauseous to smell it. But that was years ago, maybe I will take another sniff….

I was trying to think of a category that would fit Infusion d’Iris when I noticed my bottle this morning.

I’m in the boldest, most unusual and longest lasting scent I own, that also qualifies for best ironic name: ELdO Rien.

Tea is a DF green Earl Grey.

The only ironic perfume name possibly giving “Rien” a run for its money is VCA “Midnight in Paris”, when it’s closer to “Dawn on a winter Beach”.

Eau des Merveilles. Definitely a best in class for me.
Started watching Mrs. Wilson on PBS’ Masterpiece and I am once again hooked! Also looking forward to a new season of The Durrells at the end of the month. It’s the final season.?

I’m trying to think what I want to get together for the swapmeet. I want to make sure I don’t swap samples someone here sent me back to the same person(!) That would be really a faux pas!

I’ve written down what samples I have personally gotten from LuckyScent or Surrender to Chance or FragranceX, etc., so hopefully I’ll only be sending off samples that I acquired on my own. lol

When I first started getting perfumes again in this recent hobby, in January 2018 as far as I can figure, I got some full bottles that were relatively much cheaper than most niche fragrances or high end department store fragrances. I don’t get much chance to wear them, though. This includes Pleasures by Estee Lauder and Insolence by Guerlain. I got the Pacifica French Lilac perfume fairly recently, but sadly I seem to be allergic to it. Jalapeno was interested in that. More thoughts on swapping to come…

I wouldn’t be over worried about re-swapping….after all, this community understands that sometimes, as much as we might want, some fumes just don’t work for us. Finding them a new home is the best we can do….

Agreed. Once out of my hands, the recipient can do as she or he pleases. And the more bottles and samples passed around the better – with the hope that someday someone who truly appreciates them will end up the eventual owner.

I gave away a sample of Marquis de Sade (HdP) and got another at the last freebiemeet. lol. I appreciate the generosity of the ladies who both sent me quite the variety of samples, though. :) Thank you!

Next freebiemeet I may do a bag of various samples that others may appreciate — or they can pass them around. :)

          4 September 2019 at 4:40 pm

I enjoyed the samples you sent in the first freebiemeet I participated in. I’ve ended up getting travel sprays or full bottles of several of them. :) I was pretty new to it all, and that was educational to me for what I liked. Also I found it pleasurable to try the samples. :) Thank you!

The above was addressed to Jepster. I also appreciated the samples CobraRose sent at my request. I knew I liked violet fragrances, but that was the first time I’d tried iris perfumes. That hooked me on Iris Silver Mist. :) I found out what some old-school classics smelled like, too. And sampling Passage d’Enfer started me down a rabbit hole of trying various sorts of L’Artisan fragrances. Passage d’Enfer is still one of my favorites, though. :)

I’ll make more firm decisions in the next couple of days, but a few travel sprays may go up for swapping. For the most part, I don’t regret the full bottles I’ve gotten of various fragrances. And I’ve enjoyed the decants I got during the last swapmeet, particularly the Serge Lutens ones. The point of getting samples was to see what I liked and what I didn’t, so they’ve served their purpose. :)

Sampling today – One is already gone, both in terms of name and scent – I will see what it is when I get home and look at the line-up, but it is a loser. Two is also gone in name, since I just don’t remember what it is, but it is lingering in a masculine harsh herbal way, that is also send it on territory. Third is Ormonde Jayne Tolu, a floral ambery thing that I just love, but it is already growing fainter at 4 hours – I will see how much longer it lasts. Four is Tea for Two, but I get no tea, no incense, nothing but smoke. I heat my house with wood, once it gets colder, I will smell like that spontaneously. :-) Four way samples are an efficient way to weed out no-goes, and a way to avoid making a decision when one just cannot choose a SOTD. :-)

I also only get smoke from Tea for Two, and then faint vanilla in the drydown. I bought it blind, luckily cheaply! My husband says I smell like an ashtray when I wear it. I keep it for three reasons: 1. It seems that sometimes, very infrequently, I do want to smell like an ashtray
      2. Whenever someone waxes lyrical over Jasmin et Cigarette (which on me is only weak Jasmin and No Cigar for the Cigarette), I sniff this 3. It keeps me from buying Bulgari Black, which I can also only buy blind, as it is never at the counter to try. I frequently itch to buy the Bulgari, as someone in a review once mentioned that Linda Hamilton in Terminator would have smelled like this. Maybe it is Linda’s great biceps in the movie, but that line has made BB infinitely appealing to me!

I had the same reaction to one of the Tauer cowboy ones, I think it was Lonesome Rider – didn’t get anything but smoke there either. Must be a certain smoke accord that drowns my smell buds or something. Seems like I have smelled other scents with a smokey aspect that just blended rather than overwhelmed, although I can’t really think of one at the moment….

I’m wearing Amouage Love Mimosa today. It is gorgeous and it got me charmed right from the start.
It perfectly balances aquatic notes with powdery iris and sweet pollen mimosa. It’s a very sunny fragrance.

Sample thunk count this week: 3

I wouldn’t even dare, Amouage costs 340 euro for 100 ml bottle, way beyong what’s my limit of sensibility.

I’m thinking of finally getting Prada Infusion de Mimosa instead.

Trying to cook is some breakfast (banana pancakes!) as this guy with a mower the size of a combine keeps zooming around my van. Grrr!

Smellig Best in Class with SL Chergui today. Went to their small mall here yesterday to get two small fall candles from B&BW, but could only take it for about a half hour in this small space. I also picked up a sample of new Fenty hydrating foundation from the small Sephora. (That’s a whole lotta smalls, but descriptively accurate!) Slapped some on when I got back to my car to color check in natural light and OMG! The hype is real people.

Trying to get back to a more civilized look since I’m about to rejoin the working world again next week.

    Happy Humpday!

Yes! Do it! I found my color on the first try, and basically applied with my fingers on late afternoon skin that only had sunscreen on from early morning. Absolutely stunning! I’m going to try it proper today after biking/showering and applying on clean face with a brush or BB. Feels like you’re wearing nothing and doesn’t transfer. Magic!

No, it’s a luminous finish, but doesn’t feel powdery, tacky, or like anything really. There are two foundations: one was launched quite a while back and was developed for long wear oily-ish skin. Too cakey for my old skin. But the newer hydrating is luminous without being greasy. Will follow up tomorrow after full wear.

Sephora samples are free, so give it a whirl. I’m surprisingly delighted with it. I’m usually very difficult to color match in most lines, and I think this one has >50 shades..

    SotD = Terracotta Le Parfum

It’s my most favorite tropical scent. On me it never goes beachy. Just beautiful citrus, flowers, and Guerlain vanilla. It smells like heaven.

I’ve been wearing a lot of favorites again. Hiris and Infusion d’Iris, Eau des Merveilles and Jour d’Hermes. Also so much 4711 and Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat, it’s so hot here. We finally got our summer heat. :D

Really enjoying the Best Of ideas here. Hope you have your best Wednesday, NSTers!

Yes and thank you for asking. ? I have tried all the ones below…most all in the spray EDP samples with the exception of Nightgown and Violet Truffle which I tried in the extrait/oil. They are all quite good…some have differing sillage and longevity but they are all interesting and nicely done. I was overwhelmed with how many fragrances are listed in the catalog but I read reviews and picked some samples and have really enjoyed them.

        Blackburn’s Parlor EDP
        Blossom Jam Tea Cakes EDP
        Chiffon EDP
        Estate Vanilla EDP
        Rose Mallow Cream EDP
        Snowshoe Pass EDP
        Violet Mallow EDP

Wearing Diptyque’s Satin Oil in my hair–its a jasmine floral perfume oil for hair and skin. This is one goes on strong (but not skanky–skanky jasmine lovers will be disappointed–veers more towards expensive suntan lotion than indolic) but in my experience, fades after about two hours. If you are looking for a perfumed oil for hair and skin, this one is very pretty.

It is a real treat. But I agree with Ede97005 that the price is a little high. Others that I like that can usually be purchased for less are NUXE Huile Prodigieuse and Caudelie Divine Oil. I also like Aftel’s Ancient Resins, but that is even more costly. I haven’t yet tried Tauer’s rose oil–I will! And I loved my Chanel No. 5 body oil while it lasted. . . When I was in my 20s, I was an avid consumer of Neutrogena’s body oil. It has been literally decades since I purchased it–wondering if I would find it annoying now.

I’ve only read The Charioteer out of Mary Renault’s books, but I have other books of hers as Kindle books. I think I started The Persian Boy at some point…

Lots of perfumes seem to have “Mediterranean herbs” as a note. That would do well for the books set in Greece and Rome. Books set in Persia could go with rose notes in perfume. The Charioteer is set in England during World War II. English lavender, maybe?

Hey friends, it’s been a while since I’ve gotten to read or write anything on NST. SOTD is eau de hospital. My father’s cancer has come back with a vengeance (we thought he had gone into remission in June). He was rushed to the ICU last Friday, where we learned that a tumor was pressing down on his bronchi and limiting his body’s oxygen. He has been in the progressive care unit for the past several days to stabilize enough for chemo. I’m working from his hospital room, but I’ve got to say my bandwidth is significantly diminished. Shocker.

All the doctors and nurses and techs around here are incredibly nice and willing to answer all of our stupid questions with unfailing patience. They’re all incredibly respectful and gentle and encouraging, and I’m so thankful to have such an amazing team around here.

He’s had a constant stream of visitors, mostly in the afternoon but also some during the day (we’re across the street from a pretty big office campus where we have a lot of friends and acquaintances). My fiance is coming out for a few days to say hello too.

Anyway! You didn’t need an essay. It smells subpar in this hospital room. I might spritz on a gentle spray of something comforting when we go home during the afternoon for quiet hours. I have no idea how your lives are going because it’s been so long since I’ve read these posts. I hope you’re all doing well.

The cold front finally went through last night, wearing Chergui today for no particular reason except that it smells really good and I’ve been craving it lately. Tonight is supposed to be in the 40s (F) ? pretty chilly for early September, we’ll have to close the windows and I might have an evening spritz of 5 O’clock Gingembre. That fourteen pounds of furry cat at my feet will feel nice and warm ?

I keep asking MrL when he thinks he may want to get another cat but he says he needs more time after we lost ours a month ago..
When the kids are back at school I will really feel lonely with no fur companion.

When we lost our last cat, my husband said no more and he held that view for a couple years before he surprised me with the our current cat – out of necessity we are one pet at a time folks. I hope your husband caves faster than mine did ?

My older son felt the same way when our kitty, with a huge hilarious grouchy affectionate personality, died. He was pretty ambivalent when my younger son and I headed out a couple of months later to check out a kitten I had seen posted on our favorite kitten and cat rescue website. And even after we got the kitten, it was a couple of weeks before he showed much interest. But now he LOVES the kitten so much. Before he left for college they would hang out in the backyard together, play video games together, etc.

I have felt that way before too, but a kitten is a creature who brings such pure joy into every experience, it’s very transforming and healing. It’s important, though, of course not to try to get or expect a replacement for the cat who has gone. I would see this when I volunteered at the cat shelter and people wanted a cat that looked exactly like the one they’d lost. I always felt that was a big mistake and so unfair to the new kitty.

Jardin sur le Nil. As I said above, I picked it for best “no brainer work scent for a hot day”. It’s also a serendipity bottle: I swapped away my bottle at the last swap meet and had immediate regrets (though I really like what I swapped it for!), and a local friend gave me his (much bigger) bottle because he wasn’t feeling it.

Angel haters can advert their eyes and move to the next post… :)

I’m wearing Angel EDT (comet bottle) from a very recently acquired mini, spurred on by jalapeno lamenting its demise (if I’m not mistaken.)

It is so so yummy and so so different from the EDP. I just bought a FB. It just might be Best in Class in the Angel category ;) That said, I haven’t tried them all (and won’t, though I’m working my way through) and still need to spend more time with it. I also think it would benefit from spraying. It’s soft and smooth and round; a little musky. I much prefer this iteration of patchouli compared to the others I’ve worn. It’s also very feminine, which isn’t necessarily how I tend to think of Angel or its other flankers.

I tried watching an episode of the German TV show Parfum on Netflix last night, but don’t plan to continue. While it had some interesting aspects, I found the people all very unsavory. And there was too much sex. I’m not a prude, but it was dehumanizing and looked rather ludicrous, and fairly misogynistic, so I decided against it. There wasn’t enough yet to see where the perfumer story was going, but you know what? I don’t care.

    SOTD = Prada Infusion Mandarine

Perfect for this humid day with every angle imaginable of orange, orange blossom, neroli.

    Commuting Woes:
    – Why is it that people with no inhibitions let go of the foulest farts when it’s really humid and the air just sticks around?
    – Why would people waiting on the platform for a usually full train BLOCK the doors? I cannot part the Red Sea with a magic wand so very sorry, not, if I ended up bumping you out of the way so I can GET OFF THE TRAIN at my stop!
    – When you buy a NJ Transit ticket, you are not paying for a seat for you and/or your luggage, backpack, stinky feet; your ticket allows you to get inside a train if there is room (seat or no seat). THEREFORE, do not give me “THE LOOK” when I ask you to move your stuff.
    – If you cannot fit into the imaginary line that separates one seat from another (and a misfit could be due to many reasons, including spreading your wings so you can continue to use your electronic device, your seating angle / position, etc), do not get annoyed when I have to adjust my arms. body, legs to try to fit in a little better. If you are uncomfortable, grin and bear it, take a cab or consult a professional to let out your frustrations, but NEVER take it out on your fellow passengers
    – Dear Prima Donna with nails on chalkboard tone and voice cell phone screamer – TMI – take your relationship issues elsewhere

    OK, that felt good ….

What jalapeno said :-). The only one from yesterday but essentially within a 24 hour period was the cell phone screamer but it could easily have been a guy on his cell phone during the morning commute telling the person on the other end what’s happening blow by blow and since there was really nothing happening, he was just making noise.

    Sotd is JHaG Mmmm.
I saw a YouTube video last night where a lady stored her decants in a plastic over the door jewelry pouch holder thingy. It was pretty neat. Since I’m posting in my car, here is a small rant… nine thousand empty parking spots, and I’m watching this lady back in and out right next to me. She better not hit me! Why not just park literally one space down?!

I don’t get the close parkers either. What are they thinking?

Thank you! for saying this. I don’t understand either. I park far away and inevitably someone will park next to me.

Teo Cabanel Barkhane- the best amber for me ( at least for now:). Over the years I’ve tried a lot of amber fragrances, and while they are very similar, it was very hard to find the one that I loved from top notes all the way to the base.

I had a dab of TC Alahine on one arm and Oha on the other last night! Haven’t tried Barkhane yet though.

Ironically I only tried Barkhane from Teo Cabanel. How do you like Alahine and Oha?

Oh goodness I love both! I’ve loved Alahine for a while and just tried Oha for the first time last night and couldn’t stop sniffing my arm! I think they make a discovery set, I may have to get one.

Sampling VCA Moonlight Patchouli today. I’m liking it a LOT. Could see me wearing it a good bit in cooler weather for sure.

Fragance.com is selling travel sizes of Moonlight Patchouli for a good price, especially with the discount.

I forgot to sniff that one when I had the chance to in store. Then again, I already had a serious case of nose fatigue by the time I came across them.
