Wednesday scent of the day 8/21

Posted by Robin on 21 August 2019 208 Comments

It's Hump Day and Spumoni Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in newish, but not new enough, Vilhelm Parfumerie Don't Tell Jasmine.

Reminder: on 8/23 we're doing Nouveau Niche...wear a fragrance from a new (2017 or after) indie or niche brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is This is the lovely outside wall of a restaurant that had, 36 hours earlier, wreaked havoc on my internal systems [cropped] by Brendan Adkins at flickr; some rights reserved.

I pulled Jo Malone Wild Bluebell from my sample bag. Pretty, and a good contrast to yesterday’s very masculine fragrance.

In IUNX L’Eau Sento. Such a beautiful, light, comfy, smoky/salty incense perfume. Exactly what I needed today. Perfect for the summer heat, even though reviews consider it is a fall scent. Love it!

It is! The notes are seaweed, cedar, cypress, teak wood and caraway. The seaweed is pronounced on my skin. Grear sillage and longevity. Sitting on my hands to not get a decant, because I found that only one online store is selling it in France ??

You probably already know this (sitting on hands being the clue!), but StC is having a 20% off sale today (code: backtoschool20 ) and they carry the perfume…

Your perfume today sounds great! Unfortunately, cedar seems to be a bit of a bully on my skin… it can take over a fragrance and push all the other notes off to the side.

I have a very difficult time with cedar. I avoid it the most I can. However, I barely smell it on this perfume. The incense and driftwood are very dominant. All the notes are beautifully blended.

No points for me (again). It was chilly and misty when I went to select the day’s fragrance, and I impulsively went with Cuir Mauresque and a teensy spritz of Rose Anonyme over the top. Now I’m having a hot flash and wishing I’d chosen a less-warm perfuming. Oh well, if it’s sunny that means it will be arctic in the office, so … win? ;)

It turned out to not be sunny, but it was still arctic in the office. And the layering combo is still noticeable on my wrists, lo these 14 hours later. No regrets!

Well, Casmir is probably my all time favorite vanilla. A recent love and the one I get the most compliments on is Vanille Insensee, which I feel is also safe for work. I have small decants of Dame Black Flower Mexican Vanilla, Orchidee Vanille and Vanille 44…there are probably some others I’m forgetting but those are the first that come to mind.

I found Orchidee Vanille rather sweet the last time I sniffed it. I wasn’t willing to try it on skin in hot and humid weather, but that’s a quirk of mine. Not a knock on the perfume.

Omg! That photo blurb had me laughing and sympathizing at the same time. Been there, don’t want to go back! ?

Currently making my pour over and eyeing a cranberry orange muffin for breakfast. Wearing my old friend SB Smoked Ambergris. Doggo has been fed and out already, so all that needs to be done is decide where to go today. I’m very close to grand Forks now, and there are a couple lovely, historical state parks nearby that I may end up at.

Last night I went to a very well maintained county park that was completely empty except for two trashy trailers, 3 broken down cars, and a gaggle of loud people, all in the same camp spot. Plus the toilet was disgusting. No thanks! Not paying money for that. Went down the road a bit and parked up for free at a nice quiet Walmart with plenty of grass for T-Rex and clean bathrooms. I contributed to the their coffers by purchasing aforementioned muffins, bananas, and a salad for dinner.

How sad about the state park. My pet peeve is people playing music while hiking. Ughhh, point of getting out in nature is to get out in nature, not listen to the top 100.

It was an outlier as most small county parks have been well cared for, and cheap to boot. I have a feeling it was current inhabitants that made the mess, just based on the garbage pit that was their campsite. I’m just surprised they have gotten away with it. Most towns are very particular about the camp spots in their parks.

Well, I have a cassette toilet in my van, but I mainly use it for first thing in the morning and last thing at night scenario. If there is a toilet where I’m camped, I prefer to use it, unless it’s disgusting. I will say that the majority of the pit and flush toilets that I’ve come across as I’ve traveled over the summer have been clean. One in Idaho even had the inside painted in this great outdoor mural type thing… totally unexpected! I meant to get a photo of it and forgot..?

Safran Troublant, because a bottle arrived yesterday (blind bought at a really good price, absolutely triggered by some chatter on nst.)

Haven’t been in the mood to wear any of the very few scents that could get me CP points: Rogue samples and Hermetica Rosefire. Now, if I could find the sample that’s nearly thunked, or if my FB would ever arrive–shipping has been slow!–I’d be wearing Potentia Silver Thread.

I don’t have any new niche. Did go sniffing today at a very swanky mall while in the city for a meeting. Tried some Etro: Shaal Nur again (on the buy list for a while now) and ?Vento Fiori – nice topnotes, not much else. Sprayed Bottega Veneta again on impulse. The previous times I tried this I got a very watered down leather. This time it was a dead ringer for Le Parfum de Therese. What gives?

It is definitely more humid today than I thought it was going to be, so I’m in Guerlain AA Nerolia Bianca thanks to a generous NSTer. This is lovely and I see it goes for very little on the discount sites. I debated about turning the air on but I was stuck in meetings all day yesterday in air conditioned rooms and I was freezing!? I think I’ll just enjoy the heat.

Yay for almond butter cups! I’ve tried both those and Justin’s.

I stopped eating peanuts (for the most part) a few years ago and convinced myself last week that it would be okay to gorge on some stadium peanuts my husband had stashed in the cupboard. 6 hours of abject pain later, the resistance resumed.

I think the Trader Joe’s are fairly new, right? This was the first I’ve seen them and I hit TJ’s a few times a month. Although, they tend to move things around all the time…?

I don’t eat peanuts very often either, not that they bother me, but my husband and I started eating mostly paleo a few years ago and I converted to almond butter, raw almonds and cashews for snacking on, etc. Now I prefer almond butter.

SP is a floral vanilla that is kind of evocative of snow. The official notes are White Amber, White Musk, Vanilla Accord, Peppermint Cream, Cold Winds…

BJTC smelled a bit urinous to me at first. But now smells like fruity cake. The official notes are Southern Tea Cakes, Petit Fours, Floral Infused Jams & Preserves and a Delicate Aroma of Tea…

I’m wearing Casablanca today, which yum, and looking forward to learning about new brands from you all on Friday. Also, I had a dream about a new ELdO fragrance and it smelled amazing and now I’m sad it’s not real, which is a type of dream I’ve had about music before but never perfume.

In Baikal Gris from Areej Le Dore which is a brand that qualifies for the community project. However, since my skin amps cinnamon this is almost entirely a cinnamon scent with a little bit of mellow base on me.

I’m trying Rose L’Orange from April Aromatics today from a small sample. It’s light, sweet, and pretty, but not quite for me. It’s a nice rose but not enough orange to balance off the strong vanilla note.

I intended to wear Orange Leaf again today, but what do you know my hand went straight for Atelier Cologne Grand Neroli instead. Perfectly refreshing in today’s high humidity.

Had kind of a wild morning after discovering not one but TWO mice in my kitchen! It wasn’t entirely a shock – we’ve had mice get in before. I managed to catch one of them inside a tupperware container before it got away, so I took it outside and released it into the woods. What a way to start the day.

We had a MAJOR mouse infestation last winter, after spotting more than a few when we moved into our apartment last July.

The exterminator said mice tend to move in from the outdoors in July, so that’s probably what’s going on. I pray to god we do not have to deal with that again. We and our neighbors lost count of how many mice had been caught last winter right around 3 DOZEN. Haven’t heard or seen any since then so fingers crossed.

Needless to say, the entire episode was extremely unsettling.

Srsly, I about had a nervous breakdown.

The exterminator insisted that it was a particularly bad year for mice. I really hope he wasn’t lying.

Best thing we did was pack away any kind of food they might be able to get to. I also sprayed peppermint oil everywhere and used those plug-in deterrents but I’m not convinced either of those things worked.

Hope those 2 are the only ones you have to deal with :/

True story, texts later in the day after my husband set up a rat trap, the kind that snaps down on the rat:

Hubby: Did you put a rat in the basement sink?

Me: Eeeew. No! Did it get caught in your trap?

            Hubby: Yep. I can’t believe it worked so–oh s__t!

            Me: Whah?

            Hubby: It is still alive.

            Me: In the sink??????

Hubby: Ahuh. Still caught in the trap tho.

            Me: How alive?

            Hubby: VERY!

Thank you! Last time we had a mouse, maintenance staff came by and set glue traps, which I think are more inhumane than the sort of trap that kills them instantly. I set a live-capture trap before I left today – I hope it does the trick.

Woke up in Mon Guerlain still going strong from a 12-hours-previous application which took another 4 hours or so to die down (though it was still in deep drydown stages.)

Now in FM Vetiver Extraordinaire. I spray on each wrist from a travel spray and I’ll probably still be smelling this one tomorrow a.m. LOL

I’ve been tasked with choosing a new washer & dryer for my sister. Does anyone have new-ish machines that they really love? She’s particularly looking for both to have good delicates cycles (a washer that won’t overagitate sweaters or delicates; dryer with a low-temp cycle that’s actually low) and big enough to launder queen/king size comforters.

I was using a brand new Samsung set before moving, and I disliked both because the washing machine overagitated even on delicates setting and the dryer was too hot even at the lowest temp. I’ve warned her off them since we have very similar laundry habits.

I’d love to hear some recommendations.

I really like my LG front load dryer. I got the optional pedestal which raises up the machine by about 8 inches and provides storage space under the dryer. Makes it MUCH easier to get things out of the machine after the cycle is done. No problems with the delicate setting being too hot. I’ve had a mixed experience with the clothes washer. I think part of that is related to where my machines are located, though… we have a laundry room up on the second floor.

Fwiw, I hate front loaders for two reasons:
      1) I’m notorious for adding things to the machine while it’s still filling in. If I remember something, I want to be able to add it!
      2) I love being able to soak things for extended periods, especially tough stains in oxi clean, or smelly things in vinegar.

Yes! There’s always a stray sock in the back of the tumbler, and it’s not quite heavy enough to cause the tumbler to ‘settle’ so that it can be seen. So, I’m forever manually spinning the thing to get all of it out. It’s a Whirlpool Duet. Other than that, it’s fine.

I have not had this problem with my Bosch but it is probably because I put socks inside lingerie bags. Also, I have a plastic stool in my laundry room if I ever needed to fish something from the depths of the barrel but scientists to think of it, it is not that deep either.

Moustache by Rochas today, from the decanter-sized bottle I found yesterday for a song. Well, maybe two songs, but certainly not breaking the bank! It’s in a really old (40’s/50’s) ribbed glass bottle that I can’t completely encircle my hand around. Huge! I thought Kevin was going to pop around the corner any minute to wrest it from me.

It smells so good, a bit more restrained than vintage Femme, though they definitely smell of the same lineage. Surprisingly fruity for a masculine.

SOTD was Floris Chypress, a musky lemon to my nose with some – but not all – chypre accents.
It survived the day at the office but was a skin scent by this evening so I applied Lancome Magie from the La Collection bottle which keeps company to Cuir de Lancome and compared it with real vintage one, very close they are, difference may be just from having dabbed the La Collection versus spray for the vintage one.

Dare I say it, I never warmed to Magie Noire but have always liked Magie which I find more elegant. Don’t stone me MN lovers, it is too much of a good thing for me.

I remembered another 2017-now brand that I could wear this week. I’m in the decant of Pont des Arts A Ce Soir that I got during the last swap meet. This is a 2018 brand and release, and this particular perfume was done by Bertrand Duchaufour. I think it’s a must try it you’re a fan of his perfumes. I find it kind of a cross between Ostara and Nuit de Tubereuse with some Amaranthine and Pichola mixed in.

Oh, and Angela reviewed it and another in the line, A Chaque Instant, earlier this year. I haven’t tried the other two in the line yet.

New scent, old house: Spice Blend from Dior. It’s pretty quiet, actually. Pink pepper, cinnamon, bay, woody.

Does anyone know if Evilbay has suddenly changed their policy (I know, never happens, right…) on listing used perfumes? Today all my listings have ‘Condition: —‘ and when I went to revise a listing, it wouldn’t let me, unless I picked ‘New’ or ‘New In Box’. A pox on them. It’s kindof amazing how successful they are when everyone who deals with them hates dealing with them.

This is day 5 of terrible storms in DC. (l do love the booming thunder claps but the lightning has been everywhere and right on top of us for sure) It has been wild in my neck of the woods) This summer’s heat and high dew point have really been unusual.
    Be safe east coasters!

I’m wearing Lolita Lempicka today. I never can smell the comparison to Angel, and I’m glad.

I don’t see the resemblance between Angel and Lolita Lempicka either. All I get with the LL is violet-scented hairspray and black licorice.

Not wearing any perfume yet cuz we were in a water park all morning. I think I need a vacation from my vacation. Saving my curious toddler from drowning every 30 seconds was exhausting.

I didn’t bring much perfume with me but I did bring two samples to try side by side: Sugi and Kyoto by CdG. I need Mr Yasmina to tell me which he likes better so I can get it for me, uhm, I mean him ?

In other news I got zero compliments on the Coromandel I wore yesterday but I was with ppl who tend to be stingy with compliments. I’m the opposite but that can also be overwhelming

I’m interested to hear about Sugi. No one seems to talk about it.

I would describe it as a green cedary incense. With a touch of lemon at the opening. It’s very pleasant and I like it better then Kyoto I think

Commando for perfume so far today. As I noted somewhere above, I put Un Bois Vanille on right before I went to bed last night, and I think there was a little bit of a skin scent left of it this morning.

I got out to water my potted flowering plants and herbs this afternoon, and as I was finishing with the watering, I started to hear rumbles of thunder. It figures, right? lol

Those potted plants that have rooted into the ground were doing well. This includes the rosemary, and I think some of the geraniums. It’s been a while since some of those pots have been moved. (lol) Some of the salvia was pretty dried out, and one of the lovage plants. I think the other lovage plant, in a different pot, has probably rooted into the ground.

I have the sambac jasmine ‘Maid of Orleans’ out on the porch, and it is covered with flowers. The flowers only last a day, but the plant has several flowers open at once, and dozens of buds. Apparently it likes hot and humid weather. I think that one is also known as the ‘Sampaquita’ of the Philippines, so that makes sense. :)

The ‘Teasing Georgia’ English rose has been blooming and reblooming. I have a bumper crop of anise hyssop, and the bees and butterflies are enjoying that and the flowers of the various kinds of mint I have this year.

Forgot to put teas of the day: jasmine green tea and decaf green at breakfast time. Decaf Lemon Lift through the day.

Since Robin said that Vilhelm Parfumerie was a fairly new niche company, I found my sample of A Lilac a Day. I had ordered the lilac sampler from Surrender to Chance, and that was a substitute for AERIN Lilac Path. I’m not getting much from A Lilac a Day, but that may just be my nose.

Same hot weather as yesterday. However, there’s a bunch of weather alerts, watches and warnings for this afternoon into the evening. So far, I haven’t seen or heard anything.

SOTD = Belle d’Opium again for today. It got clobbered by today’s humidity, though.

It sure did come my way! ?☔ It announced its arrival with a huge thunderclap that shook the house. The rain is gone now, but it was an honest-to-God gullywasher out there for a while.

Wearing a 4 sprays of Chanel No 19 edt (current version) on my arms, and 4 more sprays of vintage edt in my hair and neck area.

Almost done my gruelling project at work! I may have to treat myself to something lovely as a reward?.

Jo Malone Honey & Crocus today. Pretty but just a “meh” for me.

Packing up my perfumes so the movers won’t get them tomorrow- I’m keeping them with me throughout the process haha. I have some stuff I’d like to give away to whoever comments. First come, first served. Prefer regular NST commenters.

First is a bottle of Ecco Bella Ambrosia.

Second I have a selection of samples and a mini/decant or two that I’ll box up and send together.

Let me know if you’re interested!
