Tuesday scent of the day 8/20

Posted by Robin on 20 August 2019 240 Comments

It's Tuesday, National Lemonade Day and World Mosquito Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Trudon Deux. Cire Trudon was founded in 1643, but they only launched perfumes in 2017. Partial credit?

Reminder: on 8/23 we're doing Nouveau Niche...wear a fragrance from a new (2017 or after) indie or niche brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Tory Burch Lettuce Ware teapot ("Created in collaboration with the estate of potter Dodie Thayer, the newly reissued Lettuce Ware Teapot captures the elegance of 1960s Palm Beach. It’s crafted from hand-detailed ceramic stoneware — in classic green as well as a beautiful new pale pink.") is $248.

I pulled out five samples from my sample stash, and then pulled blindly from the compiled sample bag. First up is Dame Herb Man. Just on the edge of too masculine for me.

Oh I like that one! I agree that it leans more traditionally masculine. Wearing it as a woman feels just a tiny bit subversive :)

I agree! I love it too and would definitely wear it! I wore Grey Flannel when I was 18 and loved that I smelled different from most of my peers.

Sample stash CP – I will do this for a week in September but will pull from my “perfume carousel”. I may swap a few things out / in before my personal CP week.

Good luck with gaining the weight! Like LizzieB, I’d happily give you my extra pounds. :) An omelette sounds like a fairly nutritious breakfast.

It sounds like you’re really enjoying those vintage fragrances. Very cool. :) Were you the one who said something like that your eyes had rolled back in their sockets when you smelled one of the vintage perfumes? There seem to be a few folks on here who have been really appreciating their vintage perfumes and vintage perfume finds lately. :)

They are quite nice. I got the EDP spray samples but I wonder if the perfume oil has more oomph. They are both almost gone now and, not unlike you, I am a generous sprayer. ?

The Rose Mallow Cream was the winner of the two…sweet rose vanilla goodness.

    Good morning Y’all!

Pulled out a bottle that I totally forgot about: SJP Born Lovely. Kind of a non-descript fruity floral opening, but it dries down to a lighter version of the original Lovely, which I’ve already loved. In fact, Lovely was one of the 1st bottles I ever bought for myself, when I fell down the perfume rabbit hole…..I’m enjoying this version!

About to start an early morning training at work and didn’t want to gas out the coworkers sitting in the conference room with me. I thunked my sample of Essential Parfums Nice Bergamote (2018, I think). It is indeed a really nice and fresh citrus perfume. Reminds me of Cap Neroli, though I’ve only sampled that once.

Scent of the morning: Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune. It was a little too much for me first thing in the morning. I’m good with it in the afternoon or evening.

We always have lemonade in the house. And I have a good number of lemon perfumes. :) I’ve been using a lot of the C.O. Bigelow lemon lotions, too. I’m sure I can manage to smell lemony all day in celebration. lol

I managed to smell nicely lemony for large parts of the day, between the C.O. Bigelow lemon lotion and the body cream.

Recently Robin put up a post about items imbued with fragrances from a niche perfume house. Was it Diptyque? Today I got a “steampunk vinaigrette locket” at A.C. Moore, put some of a sample of Serge Lutens Sa Majeste a la Rose on a bit of pink ribbon, and put that in the locket. The locket has perforations on the front. Now I’ve got a strongly fragrant jewelry sort of thing for a tiny fraction of the cost of the perfume house’s items. (lol)

The little “steampunk” pendants and such are by a company called Solid Oak, Inc. Now you know as much as I do. :)

I was looking for a William Gibson quote yesterday for Kanuka and came across this 1999 essay published in Wired magazine on his ebay obsession.

    https://www.wired.com/1999/01/ebay/

Cyberpunk SciFi author Gibson was stalking mostly vintage watches, but those of us who have prowled ebay for vintage perfume may relate.

I didn’t get on ebay until 2009, ten years after this essay, and it’s fascinating to see how much the site had evolved in those ten years, and how much is fundamentally the same even today.

Gibson noted in a later interview that ebay had basically been replaced by Twitter in his life:

Around 2008, a friend used to send me examples of the most wonderful handcrafted silver jewelry on Etsy, but when I looked recently, I couldn’t find anything interesting. I don’t know if Etsy has really changed, or if my friend was just a whiz at finding things. What’s your perspective?

Etsy has really changed from primarily artisan to mass-produced. There are still creative and unique finds but one has to sort through so much fluff – sound familiar?

Thanks for all the interesting links and fascinating aviatrix information. I certainly didn’t know about Ebay in the 1990s. I don’t think I discovered it until 2015. I still had dial up when I was doing my Phd in the 2000s and I recall the frustration of the long time it took to download any papers, articles etc. it was awful and I am pretty sure dial up Ebay would be similarly frustrating.

Yes, it’s no coincidence that I got in when my building got high speed internet.

Also, prior to that I was afraid if I got sucked into ebay, I’d spend a ridiculous amount of money, which was kind of true for a few years. And it all started with trying to track down the perfumes I wore in high school, etc. I still get a lot of pleasure out of my perfume collection, though.

Regardless of what I wear, the nearby wildfires will have everything smelling like smoke. Not so close that I’m in danger, but enough for the local news to ask us to stay inside as much as possible. No dog walks around the lake for a while!

I’m sorry to hear those fires are still burning! Really had my fingers crossed for a thorough drenching rain all across Alaska. I don’t regret my decision to not go to Alaska proper as I had planned for my summer road trip, but I’m so sorry to hear about the acres and acres lost, as well as all the animals and people impacted by the fires.

What a lovely cabbage tea pot! Now I know it’s Tuesday.

I’ve been misreading this week’s CP–so it’s the brand that needs to be brand-new (pun intended!), not just the perfume. Well, then I don’t even know what brands to choose from. I don’t suppose someone posted a list yesterday?

I am in any case in an old scent from an old, barely-niche brand–l’Artisan Parfumeur Safran Troublant! My decant is almost gone and I regret not picking up a cheap bottle when they were plentiful online.

I haven’t been mentioning my fitness journey here because I’ve been tracking it using weight, which I know is a loaded metric, but for those who’ve been following along, I did want to tell you that things have been going well! Since I got serious about getting healthier six months ago, I’ve lost 20 lbs and gained a ton of muscle. The weights I now work with are 1.5x as heavy as they were in March, and exercising feels easier and more natural now than it did back then. Less like pulling teeth and more just like, I don’t know, doing the dishes. I move through life more easily now–my job sometimes involves rushing through a lab holding a heavy box of wafers, which has now become easier to do, and I can run up stairs faster–and all my pretty dresses from a few years ago fit again :) My fitness journey will be literally endless; fitness doesn’t come naturally to me, so there will always be an element of forcing myself to move every day and to be careful I’m not eating a pound of mac & cheese too often. But these six months have done a lot of great things for my health, and going forward, I’ll be more focused on maintenance and strength building.

Ok, that’s all :) I’m just proud of myself and wanted to share it with you! Thanks for being here for me during this journey <3

This is awesome, Koyel! You’re doing great!

I identify SO HARD with your “fitness doesn’t come naturally to me” statement. For the past year or so I’ve been challenging myself to do at least 15 minutes of intentional exercise 5-6 days a week. At first it was SUCH a chore, but now I sometimes even find myself looking forward to working out.

I had ordered a bunch of things from Bath and Body Works over the past week and the first package came today. The funny thing is that somehow the FedEx guy made it to my front door, dropped off the package and left without my dogs going crazy. Not even a woof from them. Some watch dogs they are. Normally, if an ant walks across the street, they are barking. My second package will arrive by Monday. Sitting in vintage Shalimar extrait while dog sitting. My dad is having a colonoscopy today and my mom went with him. Post shower, it’s either going to be vintage BaV or Noontide Petals.

    Cap Neroli for the heat…

I’ve started a new knit project as a gift for my sister…cotton washcloths. I had to rip out and start over three times before finally making progress. For some fool reason I was using circular needles. I switched to straight, and it’s going much easier. I think they’ll be for Christmas rather than her September birthday…

Currently making a pour over coffee and may have added too much coffee! I guess I’ll be zinging around today?
Breakfast is in the instantpot cooking- more like brunch since I got up late-ish and then went for a 2.5 mile hike on the great trail system they have here.

Spritzed SB Gypsy after I got back so as not to attract flying critters while we hiked. Here’s a photo of last night’s sunset for those interested. It was a beaut!!

    Hello all-

    1) A beautiful fresh late summer morning. You can feel the subtle shift of seasons.
    2) Okay guys: I got half of my new kitchen cabinets…from IKEA. I decided to go with them just based on quality and ease of use. I do not have the doors and I do not have the appliances yet. But it is a start, and my garage is now full of boxes! Yesterday I had to stay home for the delivery, which was fine as I got the cleaning done and the garden properly weeded and watered. I will planting greens for the fall season this upcoming Thursday!
    3) I am in Solar Bloom/Rain by Clean.

Today I’m on-target for the CP wearing First Cut by St. Clair Scents. I have a tiny sample of it and am now thinking maybe I need the little bottle. So far the only one I bought was Casablanca, but this one is pretty wonderful also, and more refreshing for summer. Which, by the way, continues with a vengeance here until at least mid-September (also the peak time for hurricanes, touch wood, no big ones!).

SOTD – Parfums de Marley Athalia, very pretty floral iris – been around a while, nothing to do with the CP.

Book of the week – after distractions galore, finishing listening to Michelle Obama’s wonderful book, Becoming. Really good on so many levels. This woman has a razor eye for details, a sharp mind for analysis, and a kind heart for wisdom.

Knitting Project of month – cute floppy cardigan all done in Garter stitch with some really pretty shades of pink yarn called English Rose by Malabrigo. It’s wool and it is washable, and it should knit up fast. You start at the sleeve cuffs and make two body halves which you join in mid back, then knit a broad bottom skirt , then knit a placket which forms the collar and finishes the front edges all the way from one hem to the other. Did I say all garter stitch? Mindless knitting of big swatches with a pretty color – I love it.

My office mate is back. Many hands make light work. I am going to take next Monday and Tuesday off.

The local library copies of “Becoming” had hundreds of holds on them. Mom finally got one of the library copies and is about midway through.

Yes, the knitting project sounds lovely. Although my grandmothers both knitted, and Dad’s mother was quite a seamstress, I didn’t learn handwork. I got into a variety of hobbies, mostly dealing with collecting things. :)

Hi friends! I miss you all so much. I am in Still Life in Rio by Olfactive Studio today and I’m loving it. Great summer scent.

Move is in full swing. The movers come tomorrow to pack everything and then they load it up and haul it away on Thursday. This is my last full week of work (I work two days next week) so life is crazy right now. I just try and take it one day at a time. We go to West Virginia next weekend to visit family and then as soon as we fly back to NM we will load up the truck and camper with what we held back from the movers and head to California. Pray for my sanity. I’m a detail-oriented control freak so some of the things that are out of my control are making me crazy!

Sweet fluffy pillowy soft iris. For a few minutes, it reminded me of Puredistance Opardu. I have the travel spray and it looks and feels luxurious. Today, I wore 5 sprays and it is now a skin scent; next time, it will be 8. I may need a full bottle and will pounce once I see a good deal.

In other news, Mugler responded to my email and will be send me a sample of the Ambre Les Exceptions. Wahoo!

Deal for me comes in several forms:
        – straight % off discount. By chance, I got a 20% off deal fro LuckyScent for Neela Vermeire Mohur Exrrait. I must have searched for, added it to my card. Removed it from my cart, added it back in so many times that I think the LuckyScent bot took pity on me and flashed a one-rime only discount code. I may do the same technique wirh Parfums Dusita.
        – as far as I know (but I did no research on this) LuckyScent seems to be the only one that carries this line. I always check to see if the GWP is worth getting over the free shipping.

There are a couple of NZ perfume brands, or NZ associated brands (Abel) that have helpfully sprung up in time for the CP: Abel, Curio Noir, Queenstown Perfumier, Mea so today I am in High Country Tussock by Queenstown Parfumier. A natural perfume, sheer but with a nice pollen aspect. Still cold in these parts with morning frosts but I saw a lamb yesterday and the willow has started to sprout green leaves so we’re getting there.

Rain, blessed rain! It’s raining in Houston and I’m so grateful! ?

Tea is iced, a mix of decaf + Moroccan mint + stevia.

I’m in at least 15 spritzes of Gucci Memoire. I like it well enough, but it’s quite muted. Nice chamomile and musk. It’s unusual for mainstream, for sure.

Liquides imaginaires Tellus. Smells like earth and patchouli, a bit goth and skanky. Perfect for a rainy and gray day.
Just got some decants , so j am wearing Adam Levine for bed. Dinner was zucchini fritters with tomato salad, all from our garden. Still searching for new zucchini variations, we had soup, stuffed ones, pasta, risotto, salad, fermented zucchini. Any other ideas?

Have you made spaghetti out of zucchini, or is that what you meant by pasta? I am far from a zucchini fan, but a vegetarian friend got out the spirolizer and it was quite OK.

Our neighbor is keeping us supplied with lots of zucchini too. Tomorrow I am going to make a crust of shredded zucchini, eggs and Parmesan, baked; topped with tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, onions and mozzarella; then baked again. I think I’ll cook the tomatoes and mushrooms in olive oil with lots of garlic, just to get most of the moisture out. Too hot to use the oven today.

What do you think of Adam Levine perfume? I’m curious.

It’s been a lousy day. I started out in Shalimar Souffle, halfway through the day switched to Carnal Flower. Now I want to wear something else, but can’t think of what. It’s going to be storming soon, I think. There’s a new line at Sephora called Floral Street. Anyone familiar with it? It’s online only, so no testers.

Yes! Floral Street has been on my radar for a while because cassieflower kept talking about it on Australian Perfume Junkies. The Ylang Coffee one interested me. Sadly, I couldn’t find it at my local Sephora. Might have to go into the city to try it. But I also noted there’s a sample set that’s reasonable.
