Wednesday scent of the day 8/14

Posted by Robin on 14 August 2019 225 Comments

Hump Day and Creamsicle Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm getting double points (yes, I made that up) in Kerosene Unforsaken for the 3rd creamsicle day in a row.

Reminder: on 8/16, wear a fragrance by Kerosene, Keiko Mecheri or Kai, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter K.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Somehow I managed to miss the memo on creamsicle day–but as luck would have it, this morning I indulged in a delightful soaking of Lili Bermuda Sunkiss. Unfortunately, I purchased the edt, so it is already a distant memory within two hours.

Perfumer H Orange Leaf. I can’t believe how long my decant is lasting with how frequently I’ve worn it this summer!

Today’s tea is an herbal lemongrass/rose/hibiscus blend I got from a local, one-woman outfit at the farmer’s market. I’ve been drinking it iced with honey when I need a little break from caffeine. Very refreshing.

Oh, tea sounds very nice! I have been drinking lots of lemongrass & mint this summer.

We make concentrated extracts of mint or verbena by steeping a big handful in either hot water (mint) or boiling water (verbena). We store the extracts in the fridge in bottles and then pour in a little with some ice and sparkling water for a sugar-free, tasty alternative to either plain water or cocktails.

If I get my hands on lemongrass, I might try the same thing!

Shame. Shame. I had to look up your lyrics, and me a PS super fan. But truthfully, my fandom is stuck in the 1960s-80s, and I never even owned The Rhythm of the Saints.

You are on your own doll. For the moment I am ear worm free–but now I may go try to find my Graceland CD….

    Hello all!

After today’s shopping I’m in Frederic Malle’s Outrageous! Which is perhaps not outrageous but very well done, and clever. I’d rather smell this on dozens of people than Santal 33. I might want a cute 30ml bottle.

To anyone not on Instagram: Malle has been posting about working with Jean Claude Ellena again. Getting goosebumps!

The Lush store across from Macy’s Herald Square closed down a few years back. The not so new one anymore opened across the avenue in 34th, bigger and brighter and not as dingy. I still consider it the Herald Square store eventhough it is technically not in Herald Square. Close enough for government work ?

I like Sephora’s new free samples program – or perhaps it’s just the one by me. The samples are filled to the top and each is marked with a letter and the letter corresponds to what is written on the one baggie where all the samples go. And you now have to provide an email address.

Those gerberas scream FALL! to me??

Just getting activated, eating a Morning Glory muffin and drinking piping hot coffee while luxuriating I’m my boondocking spot in the Black Hills National Forest. Not a soul around, and other than the fierce storm that blew through about 2am, just the birds and the wind.

The storm was a whopper and perched on top of a mountain is not a great place to be, so I had a bit of an unsettling night. To cheer and perk myself up, I’m wearing SSS Equestrian from a travel spray.

Hope everyone else’s night was more restful than mine✌?

Hello NST after a bit of an absence (summer, traveling, etc.)!
Still commando this morning but wanted to share something funny:
From the last freebiemeet, I got a box of fresh manly samples (thank you again!), which I ended up giving my husband because he was all out and it was his birthday – anyway, he liked the little box filled with samples and was using them, but whenever I asked him what he was wearing, he’d be like “I don’t remember”, so I insisted he look at the little labels. Otherwise, how to find a keeper?
In any case, just now he came by and said: “This one is called Surrender to Chance….” :)
    Happy Hump Day.

Still battling this calamitous contagion and feeling very sorry for myself indeed. Wearing the safe but cheery A la rose by MFK. Slurping coffee and hoping the cobwebs will clear enough to get real work done. Last night I stayed up much too late reading American Predator. I have avoided reading Helter Skelter or In Cold Blood, maybe afraid of my own prurient interest at the expense of someone’s real suffering. Needless to say, I could not put down my Kindle.

I read so much of that kind of thing when I was young, and now I feel like I don’t know that person anymore. I’d probably have a nervous breakdown if I read Helter Skelter today.

That person I was then would surely figure better to die now then to live to be excited about the next season of Great British Baking Show, ha!

I found a glass blowing competition which is absolutely great! And gardening shows. And one where obsessed people rebuild old castles and such.
This drives adorable hubby nuts. If its not bloodier than Walking Dead, he thinks its booorrring.
My TV watching has pretty much swindled down to reruns of Cybil, and a cute Canadian show called Corner Gas, although last night he convinced me to start watching Outlander. I am a sucker for costume dramas with guys riding big horses and looking rugged and unwashed, especially if there are kilts involved. Because they are actors, and actually smell of Tom Ford and Dior. :-)

    Hi All! Humpday!

    1) Committed to finally, finally, FINALLY doing the kitchen. I WILL NOT be using the IKEA plan because I rethought the space and how I use the space. I broke down and did my own plan in AutoCAD, and took it to Home Depot and got a very promisingg quote; will take to IKEA and do my pricing as well.

    2) Am in Prim Botanicals Body Oil and Clean’s Solar Bloom.

The one bonus with Ikea, maybe worth thinking about, is that you have the standard sizes, plus so many third parties sell faces / fronts — you will be able to redo your kitchen easily if you want to, 10 years down the line, without having to replace the actual cabinets.

I have been hankering after a new kitchen with Ikea cabinets and Semihandmade fronts myself :-)

Ooof, I was literally considering this route. The real money, it is seems is not in the boxes per se, but in the fronts and convenience hardware. Semihandmade is in the running, as are some local makers.

Hello Ede, I’m reading Nora Roberts’ latest book Under Currents. One of the characters is a landscaper and she provided a homeowner with a tip on how to grow basil. Counting from the root up for 5 leaves (not sure if yours grew…I know it was a fail but you have the plant, no?), trim off the leaves above that and it is supposed to make the plant grow more abundantly.

As to kitchens, if I had to redo mine, I would get rid of the upper cabinets between the stove/oven and sink. The empty space the allows you to have taller appliances without having to worry about fit and / or potential damage due to food splatters and / or steam (no damage to mine but it prevented me from getting a newer coffeemaker).

Oh, glass front cabinets, if I were to re-do the doors, just sayin’…

      Good luck!

        Hey lovely lady!

        1) I did that trick and some of the basil plants did respond with bushy growth. However, I think the issue was our local weather PLUS sun exposure. Next year, i am growing basil in the front side yard.

        2) What I have planned is this: There is dead counter space next to the fridge that holds a toaster and occasionally a crockpot when cooking. there are cabinet above and below that hold supplies- badly. Will get rid of those and simply build a pantry center there with roll out shelving and a frame for the fridge. The base cabinets will have roll out drawers so I can store dishes, cups, Tupperware, mason jars and pots and pans. I am gonna do shelving on top for cookbooks and any extra dishes. Countertop will be a cherry butcher block. The island with plumbing will have a solid surface. The floors will a vinyl or bamboo plank. The color will white and dark blue.

It depends on where in Philly you would be at. If you are going to be on the Main Line in Bala Cynwyd, there is a Saks. Some of the suburban malls are decent for sniffing. And the Mall at King of Prussia has stuff like Hermes, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdales.

I like the other L’Occitane tea scents like Green Tea and Green Tea with Jasmine, all discontinued.Kenzo Silk series is good, also discontinued. For winter Tokyo Milk Dark Bulletproof is lovely.I’ve been wearing Berdoues Assam of India a lot this summer thanks to the recommendation here.I tried Commodity Tea and it was just ok.MM Replica Tea Escape is ok but is not a favorite, especially for the price.I recently rediscovered an older bottle of Philosophy Tea from 2005 I believe. It was part of a series with lemon and sugar scents. It is more of a light mint tea scent, not a black tea.It is nice for the summer. The later Philosophy Tea release a few years ago was more of a citrus tea,not a black tea.I tried it but didn’t like it.

I think I’m on my 3rd perfume of the day with Chanel L’eau (which to me smells like bright, shimmering bergamot and laundry musk.) It took me a while to warm up to it since it has nothing in common with the original, but it’s so cheery that I eventually fell to its charms and bought a bottle.

Home and finally completely unpacked after 8 nights away. We spent the last one on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. I planned the stop there primarily because it was the midpoint on our route home, and after making the reservation a few months ago didn’t really give it any further thought. Even for a non nature lover like myself, it was amazing and super fun and a good end to our trip.

A new sample of L’Eau d’Hiver arrived earlier this week, and I sprayed it on this morning thinking “I love this one, don’t I?” Turns out I don’t … at least, not in the heat of summer. Fortunately I went easy on the sprays, and equally fortunately it layered well with a bit of Le Galion Iris. Much better for a 90 degree day.

Oh no – what a horrible thought! I blew through a 2ml sample a while ago and loved it. Well, I have 3mls this time so I can afford to set it aside and wait for cooler weather. I also got a smaller sample of Iris Poudre which I’m testing now, and it is quite as lovely as I remembered … so there’s hope that I’ll have something to confess to Donatella sometime soon. :D

Today I’m wearing Keiko Mecheri Paname plus another of her scents that is now a mystery because the label came off. It’s the label glued to the front of the black bottle, and it’s not written anywhere else on the bottle. I’m thinking it is Mihime because I definitely can detect heliotrope. That one is overpowering the Paname on my left arm which is sort of too bad because the herbal absinthe of Paname is smelling especially good today in our heat. I have several of her perfumes because I always like her perfume aesthetic. I met her once when she came for a day to Kuhl-Linscomb, and she was very gentle and charming and gave me lots of nice samples. This was back when Datura Blanche was new, and I now see that would have been 2009. Hard to believe it was 10 years ago! I’ll have some other options to choose from for the next two days, but the datura one will pretty definitely be one of them.

SotD = Orange Sanquine + Vanille Insensee

Celebrating creamsicle day with my fragrances. Thanks to Robin for the heads up.

I remember loving both of these scents on first sniff. Together they are even better. :D

SOTD = Replica Whispers in the Library

Okay, but the dry-down is meh. 5 sprays from my Sephora sample lasted about 4 hours pre-drydown.

I dropped of mom’s stash of walkers (she had 4 of them) and transport wheelchair to the senior home. The nuns were taking turns honking the horn that came with one of the walkers. I’ll be back there to volunteer / sit with the seniors. The nuns pegged me right as being extroverted and probably good with spending time with seniors. We’ll see…

In other news, does anyone know the best way to dispose of an expired household fire extinguisher?

I’d suggest dropping off that fire extinguisher at your local firehouse. The folks there would know what to do with it.

As for your question last night, I “think” I like tonka. But I didn’t get any from that Shower Cream. What I smelled was overboiled veggies! Weird, huh?

Good idea about the local firehouse. I will be passing by one tomorrow. Lots of other stuff to donate.

And eep, I commented on the Avocado Shower Cream in your original post. Here’s a copy and paste:

“As to Avocado shower cream, I think washing with it smelled different than smelling it from the bottle. I got the sample because I saw the bottle by the register and the green color was very eye-catching. I smelled no avocado, just pralined tonka and quite nutty.”

Happy Scented Birthday to Bear! I hope you are having a great one!

It’s a VERY wet day for me… I got caught in some rain taking the recyclables out this morning. There have been more episodes of downpours since. Not sure that grilling will be possible for dinner tonight. That’s OK, though, I have a backup plan.

SOTD = back in Sinti today. This sample is definitely a keeper! ?

Since we ran out of nesting comments, I’ll answer your question here.

So previously, I would get barely half-filled (and smaller atomizers) and the name of the perfume would be written on indiviual baggies. This year and it must have started no more than 2-3 months ago, your 3 max per visit all go into the same opaque baggie about the size of 1 and 1/2 index card. I think it makes sense to record it from the standpoint of being able to keep track of supplies inventory and also to send email reminders of perfumes sampled and helpful links to order a full bottle (I haven’t received these yet but I bet they’re a coming). On the flip side, those asking for the same samples over and over again may get shamed but who knows?

Scent for a little while: 4711 Acqua Colonia Lime & Nutmeg body spray. I had remembered getting some lime scent before the nutmeg, but today I got all nutmeg. I didn’t get the bottle *that* long ago.

We got a few sprinkles of rain here, and then it got pretty sunny, although still very humid.

    And Happy Birthday, Bear!

I’m in Odeur 53 today. I’ve been a bit obsessed with it lately, but it’s just perfect in our hear and humidity. And I have a 200 ml bottle, so it’s not like I’m going to run out any time soon …

I’m back with my perfume story.
Yesterday, I wore No.5 L’eau to work, and threw the bottle in my purse so I could reaply after lunch. At which time I found the bottle was missing! I have a work locker, but no lock. I figured another associate must have stolen it. I went to my store manager to have him look at the security footage. I also called home to check that I hadn’t lost my mind, and had left it at home. My manager found that no-one had been in my locker, but was now very curious himself to find out what happened to the bottle. He went back to the cameras and retraced my steps from when I got out of my car. As I enter the store, I dropped my lunch bag, and when I pick it up, the bottle falls out of my purse! I never noticed! So all I see on the camera is my bottle laying there, as customers walk by it. I covered my eyes and said, I don’t want to see anymore. I was almost in tears, when he says look! This ends happy! I looked, and a lady picked up the bottle and promptly walked it to lost and found! Omg, I ran over, and there it was! Lol! I never thought to look there because I was so sure it had been stolen.
Sorry, I know this is long, but you guys are the only one’s that would get it. Thanks for listening.

That’s such a great story! Glad it turned out the way it did; kind of restores your faith in humanity.

I sampled L’eau a few weeks back when it was really hot here. It bloomed so nicely in the heat.

Yay! Great story! Reminds me of the time someone at work came to me and said someone stole her AirPods. She was sure she left it at work and since she was sitting at an aisle seat, she said it would have been very easy to swipe the pair. I gave her contact information for building security. The following day, she called me and said a co-worker found them under her keyboard! I took the opportunity to urge her to consider the safety of wireless earbuds in both ears at the same time (keeping alert, wireless waves basically traveling back and forth through brain).

I am, it’s a really great scent! I had to blind buy as there are no places near me with these to sample. I owe hajusuuri (and the Oreos) a shiny enabler pin!

I think it will be my weekend scent as we’ve been invited to my hubby’s brothers house for some summer fun. He plans on taking us out in his boat and of course, there will be golf (for others, not me). I ‘caddy’ which means get the beverages for everyone!

Spent the day in ELDO Dangerous Complicity. Nice but not an obsession (though I do have 30ml).

Ordered a few other ELDO samples today including Spice Must Flow (could only find that one on eBay).
