Tuesday scent of the day 8/6

Posted by Robin on 6 August 2019 233 Comments

It's Root Beer Float Day, plus Andy Warhol's birthday. (Update: RIP Toni Morrison) What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Le Labo Tubereuse 40, plus a cup of Lumbini Estate Ceylon tea from Upton.

Reminder: on 8/9 we'll celebrate National Book Lovers Day...wear a fragrance inspired by an author or a book or a character in a book.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows items from the Bernardaud In Bloom porcelain collection. The "hot beverage server" runs about $325.

Love the colors of that image.

I am wearing Lorenzo Villoresi Theseus for this CP. Sunny and herbal.

It is lovely, but I also admire how well the colors of macaron and pumpkin (?) are matched.

That tea set is so pretty!

I chose my sotd this morning and then actually forgot to take it with me to put on when I arrive at work.
So for now I’m without a perfume but I plan to put on Mona do Orio Amyitis as soon as I’m back home.

I liked the name, the perfume and the romantic backstory of King Nebuchadnezzar constructing the Hanging Gardens of Babylon for Amyitis of Media pining for the green mountains of her homeland. 🙂

Root beer floats! My mother’s favorite. I make her one for lunch on days when her appetite is lagging. Every summer I find a root beer stand that serves draft root beer in a frozen mug, there’s nothing better. It might be a Midwest thing?
Wearing The Cobra and the Canary today. Imaginary Authors feels like a cheat for the CP.

Love root beer floats! A friend and I used to have them on her porch after work when we were in our 20s.

Root beer is amusing. I have yet to find a non-American who gets it. Even when I tell them it has to be fresh and very, very cold, they don’t like it. Not even in floats…

Haha! I bought a root beer when I went out to the movie theater with my friend from China. When I offered her a sip, she at first didn’t want to drink it because she thought it was alcoholic (understandable, considering the name). She did end up trying it, and she definitely wrinkled her nose afterward! Lol.

Also not a Midwesterner but love root beer! I would choose it over Coca-cola any time. Back when a parent was not judged when the kids have soda / pop with lunch, dad used to take us to a pizza parlor and allowed us to order any non-alcoholic drink (mom would have insisted on milk).

I’m in VC&A Neroli Amara thanks to a generous NSTer. It does share similarities with California Reverie to my nose and both are perfect for the beautiful summer weather.
Today is the last day of my two week staycation.? It’s been wonderful, and I could totally get used to this, lol. It’ll be good to get back into a routine, right? That’s what I’m telling myself anyway. Yesterday I did literally nothing (well, I did do 2 loads of laundry) but binge the latest season of Fleabag on prime. That show may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but I loved it. To me it was laugh out loud funny.

Wearing OJ Prive and taking a 2min break from a very stressful work time (on my 11th straight day on).

OJ Prive mini review – pretty! I received it last night. I don’t know if it’s the work stress or that I didn’t spray enough, but this is QUICKLY disappearing, which most OJs don’t. Initial blast has a lot of mandarin that leans towards apricot on me, and creamy sandalwood, and the rice note is clearly present but not overwhelming. It reminds me of something from my very early perfumista days 10+ years ago, but I can’t put my finger on it. I’ll report back if I think of it. I don’t pick up on the gardenia or magnolia. I worried that it would be too similar to the other OJs that I love, but it’s wholly it’s own perfume. There’s a touch of green weaving through the background. it’s not heavy. Very sunny and pretty.

Mainly to me it smells of rice+apricot+sandalwood with a unspecific floral note, though I wouldn’t have expected that from the notes. Pretty.

    Enjoy today, everyone!

Good luck with your work week. Before this weekend, I worked 19 days straight (well the second weekend was a conference, but these days those feel like work to me too). Now, though, I allow myself some extra time on NST and we’re eating very casually. Swings and roundabouts – mental health is very important!

Started out in La Chasse aux Papillions, but of course it faded, so now, since my office mate is gone on another 2 week vacation, I have just applied a generous couple of spritz’s of Do Son, from the small decant I keep in my office drawer for just such occasions.

Speaking of Diptyque, I succumbed to temptation and bought one of the cute 30 colored bottles of Tam Dao from Needless Mark-up, and it is just as cute as the pictures appear. Now trying to sit on my hands and not order one of the Eau de Sens 30 ml bottles.

Why doesn’t everyone put out their perfume in 30 ml bottles?

My heartfelt condolences to you and your family. It’s difficult enough losing a fur baby, I think even more so when having to console your human babies. I suggest obtaining a copy of Cat Heaven by Cynthia Ryland, a children’s book with stunning illustrations and beautiful text that will soothe not only the little ones’ souls but the grownups as well. It’s a book I always give to friends who’ve lost a fur baby (there’s a Dog Heaven as well) – and one that’s helped me through my own grief (not affiliated in any way, just highly recommend). Hugs.

I missed most of the daily threads last week, so if this already came up, I didn’t catch it: looks like the Le Labo city exclusives will soon be available (for a limited time), they’re selling samples now online. Availability dates for FB unclear.

I find the whole city exclusive concept irritating. It’s hard to imagine any are so amazing to warrant $300 for 50ml. But then— am I missing something amazing?

Question: Have any been worth it to you?

I love how the website says you can order 1.5 ml samples for “the very reasonable price” of $12 each. Even with free shipping, that’s not exactly what I consider a deal….

Speaking of Barneys, did you see they are potentially filing for bankruptcy and will be closing stores? Not NYC at this point. Their rent doubled in the last year.

I like a couple of them (Aldehyde and Baie Rose) and have indulged in the ridiculous $12 samples. But both of those (and others from the line) remind me of other, less expensive perfumes. Aldehyde smells a lot like Chanel Exclusif no 22 and Baie Rose smells very similar to Penhaligon’s Elixir to me.

I did a side-by-side and they are similar to me. Elixir has more spice and the Le Labo smells colder to me, but both have a similar rose/frankincense thing going on and I think Elixir is just as good!

LL scents haven’t worked for me yet, they seem to have a resonance that is jarring to my nose. I’ve purchased several sample sets, tried them over several months, then gave up and passed them on to other perfume friends. Have also spent much time at the Le Labo perfume counter on multiple occasions without any luck. But the funny thing is I keep trying. Hope springs eternal. 😀

I fell in love with musc 25 and bought the small travel spray size. It’s definitely my most expensive perfume per milliliter.

The only problem is that I don’t wear it often, I guess to hoard it? I really need to change that behavior.

Oh, the full bottles of the city exclusives will be available to purchase for the month of September.

Oh definitely don’t hoard perfume! I used to all the time when something felt too special not to save, but in the last couple of years I’ve had decants evaporate and bottles with small amounts remaining take a turn for the worse. Wear and enjoy.

I have Vanille, Gaiac and Poivre city exclusives, plus several of the regular line. My husband is buying me Benjoin next month as a belated birthday present (it’s in April but I asked him to wait specifically for this perfume.) Would love to try Baie Rose and Tabac but I am in Canada, Montréal has no Le Labo counter. 🙁

To me they are worth it because I love them.

Nomenclature Shi_so from a sample today. I like it when first applied but I’m not inspired by the development and the base has one of those harsh acetone-y woody ambers that I dislike, but fortunately in small amounts here.

    Ugh RIP Toni Morrison

I put on some Copal Azur last night because Victoria on BdJ mentioned it in her article and I hadn’t worn it in so long. I could still smell it on my arms even after a shower so I put another incense perfume on top of it, Messe de Minuit. It fits the cooler, foggy morning. I’ll pair it with the damp castle setting of Jennifer Egan’s The Keep.

One good thing and one not- good thing:
After much sweat, labor, and frustration, my boyfriend got the portable a/c unit that my aunt and uncle gave us set up in the bedroom last night. I had to step in when he was getting rough with the vent. I methodically examined it and started to work on attaching parts. He said, “I think you’re on to something.” Lol, yes I was.

My car wasn’t ready for pick up after work yesterday, so that has dragged into another day. I took an Uber home from work and another to work because we’re a one car household. The coworker that has given me a ride in the past is working from home today. I realize I could take the bus, but that’s an hour commute vs. 20 min in the car. Can’t wait to get my car back today. Thus morning the uber driver’s car smelled like a locker room. ☹

Me too… very disappointed with the discontinuation of some of the best scents out there in candles, perfumes and body products. My fave was Spanish Amber and I also have some of their really old candle scents stashed away that were discontinued years ago. I imagine their target market now is likely younger but there are so many cosmetics and beauty products out there the competition must be fierce. I also find the new products expensive (in CDN$) for what they are.

I’m testing Diptyque L’Eau de L’Eau on the left arm and Prada Infusion Mandarine on the right. The Diptyque is much stronger than the Prada, but both are just ‘likes’. But that could change.

Tea is MF Pleine Lune, also a like.

Had a cool thing happen yesterday at the thrift store. I complimented a woman on her perfume, and asked if she’d mind sharing the name of what she was wearing. It really seemed to take her off guard at first, but she recovered and seemed pleased. She was wearing La Vie Est Belle, one of my least favorite mall frags, right up there with J’Adore. OJ Champaca today. Going to keep spritzing this all day…

Speaking of eBay… I have now sent two emails to a seller asking for clarification on a bottle of a Carthusia scent. Listing says Aria di Capri, but bottle pictured is Fiori. Want confirmation on which scent is for sale. No word yet.

What I like on the tea set above is the size of the teacup. I have this odd desire for a nice, large cup that goes with a saucer. Not a mug. I want a proper cup and saucer, but I want the cup to be big.

    It is indeed.

In a guilty pleasure today, Lustre, as my swap in exchange never arrived. (USPS says it was delivered, but it wasn’t.–Filed a missing package request but sort of had to fudge the contents… so we shall see…)

Lustre is interesting. I like it more from a distance. Up close on my wrist I catch the hint of something that doesn’t play well with roses. I want to try this one on my husband and son as well—as I am thinking it may turn out to be a great unisex frag.

For me Lustre is interesting, but a better version (in my opinion) at a fraction of the cost for a very similar idea is Rosas Frescas by Coqui Coqui. If you haven’t tried it, I’d be happy to send you some!

I only sprayed it on a card this past weekend, but the huge tea rose blast was too much for me. I didn’t make it to the drydown.

    SOTD is Heavenly. I think.

Thank you again to all for being a big support. Even though I did not respond to all, please know every one of you has surrounded me and my little dog with such love and light.

She didn’t do well yesterday. Such a happy little girl. The nurses there wanted to keep her there because she is so sweet.

My favorite book of all time is To Kill a Mockingbird. I have much of the book and movie both memorized and imo Gregory Peck is perfection as Atticus Finch. So I will be doing a week of associations with that selection.

For today I’ve layered J-Scent Honey & Lemon with Assam of India which creates a wonderful, sweet iced tea thing for me. Just delicious. My association for this is that the book location is modeled after Monroeville, AL where Harper Lee lived. Trust me, sweet iced tea with lemon is the answer for the sultry Alabama summers.

In high school I had a wonderful Lovebird (he looked just like this: https://thefinchfarm.com/lovebirds-black-masked/), and I named him after my literary hero, Atticus Finch!

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Pacific Lime

Fruity lemon lime with mint, with no sign of coconut or anything remotely boozy. No book or character pairing for this one except to say it works well for NJ muggy weather!

Regarding the 190th anniversary Guerlain, Bergdorfs tried to entice me with a deal for the $14k bee bottle: $11k plus a possible 5% discount AND they will load me up with gifts. ???. As tempting as that was, I could not live with myself if I spent that much on a perfume! So the saga continues and I will report back once I have a more reasonably priced bottle in my hot little hands.

For some reason, I thought they had found a “normal” priced bottle for you. Maybe I just dreamt it.
I would love to know how many and what gifts they were thinking of showering you with!

I would never know what gifts because it is just plain wrong to spend that much on perfume (in one go). If I’m a serious collector and want to invest, maybe, but it is a hobby. They located one at the Paris Guerlain flagship store but there were ordering restrictions (probably because BG still has that bee bottle ?). That said, there’s a glimmer of hope through some continued searching in the entire U. S. (I am very patient and persistent.)

SOTD is EL Sensuous Nude in edt form, a little lighter and airier than the edp original but still long-lasting and it doesn’t attract insects outdoors where I will be in just a few minutes watering the garden since rain is an absent commodity these days.

The best grown-up root beer float we discovered on the Kentucky bourbon trail: premium vanilla ice cream + Dr. McGillicuddy’s Old-Fashioned Root Beer + Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream. Yum! We’ll be enjoying tonight.

When I was a kid in Michigan, in summer we would go to the A&W drive in for dinner. We would have chili dogs and root beer floats. Wonderful memories. Today I’m wearing Lolita Lempicka, I needed a hit of anise for some reason.

I am reading “Hotbox,” about the catering industry, Fer-de-Lance, the first Nero Wolfe mystery, A Man Lay Dead, the first Ngaio Marsh Inspector Alleyn mystery, and I’m re-reading The Unwinding of the Miracle, because I think I missed some stuff because I was crying too much the first time.
