Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, late July 2019

Posted by Robin on 27 July 2019 205 Comments

Another weekend, another heatwave. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the last perfume sample you thunked, your favorite "too hot to cook" summer dinner, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Hello all! Hot as heck as usual in Texas.

I have a drop of La Myrrhe on for company as I had to leave my apartment before being fully formed. This stuff is lovely, and when I was getting my most recent bell jar, this almost went home with me instead.

Not sure what I’ll be wearing for work later this afternoon but I’ll keep you posted.

LOL at “before being fully formed”. #wokeuplikethis (honestly, some of them look too “put together” but I shudder to think what they really looked like without embellishments)

I think the only person who could tell was my boyfriend, who took me to lunch. I’m decently coiffed now, and in So Pretty EdT!

Lucky us! I love the undulating jasmine and warm skin. Dabbed, it doesn’t last too long, but I’m going to try decanting it into an atomizer.

I’m eating pesto pasta salad wearing a light spritz of an “iconic” (it really is but that word is tossed around haphazardly nowadays) perfume.
I’m a flanker that rarely gets mentioned.
    Who am I?
Fictional scenario used to describe the scent, actually eating oatmeal (which I LOVE! ).

Hmm. Don’t know the perfume, but I’m guessing it has a note of basil. :) There are a lot of fragrances that have Mediterranean culinary herbs in the notes.

I like oatmeal too, but it’s been too darned hot out for me to want it.

Not basil, but that is my fault for describing it that way.
This is a ‘new-fangled’ pesto with another ingredient substituting for the basil.

I’m getting ready to make fast refrigerator pickles if I can find my recipe. This time of year we live on barbequed chicken and ribs, hot dogs and sandwiches/salads. And fruit.

I love the photo up top, and especially love its title. SOTM (while waiting for the morning overcast to clear) is Iris Prima. I’m always surprised at how much I like it. Prada’s Infusion d’Iris didn’t work for me at all and VCA’s Bois d’Iris wasn’t quite right for me either … and Iris Prima is so very similar to both of those but seems to have exactly the right mixture of basically the same ingredients. Oh well, more of the Prada and VCA for the rest of you!

I haven’t thunked something in a long while.
I have had a very thematic summer testing new fragrances.
Today starts two weeks with Guerlain and I am in vintage Shalimar EDC from the 60s.
After my Guerlain weeks I will be in a week of Auphorie followed by a week of Dior.
I may not start thunking again until September.

Too hot to cook summer dinner is toast with almond butter covered in butter pickle slices.

    Happy weekend!
We’re not having a heatwave as big as other parts of Europe do. While Spain or France suffer from 45*C we’re having not more than 32 degrees lately.

Today I’m wearing Mona di Orio Amyitis. It’s a reissue of their 2008 perfume without any changes to the formula. I got it as part of brand’s Signature Collection box of 3 x 10 ml, other two are Carnation and Jabu.

Good news, I have a sample of Amouage Love Mimosa coming my way so I’m hoping to test it sometime next week.

Too hot to cook means eating out!

    SOTD = Hiram Green Lustre

Anyone looking for a powerhouse will be disappointed. Anyone who thinks it’s all about the first spritz is missing out. Upon first spritz, I thought why the h-ll did I pay to smell like Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose (which I got as a freebie from an NSTer) but after a few minutes, the Rose quiets down and a light spice comes out and it stayed like this throughout its life. Very nice!

I will be in Eau de Melange as I will be decanting for a split and some freebies.

    Have a great weekend!

I’m pondering getting an ice-cream maker. Been looking for raspberry ice-cream in the stores forever, to no avail! We don’t eat alot of it (more salty tooth, lol). But with all the fresh fruit here, there would be many options! Sorbet or gelato possibly.

We’ve had the raspberry Magnum bars, but they are gone so quickly. And there’s only 3 per box, so we fight over the the last one.

I didn’t know about the raspberry Magnum bars, there are three ice cream shops within a few blocks of my house so I usually end up just buying cones, and they only have raspberry sorbet, not ice cream.

We have the simple Cuisinart electric one. — just an on/off switch, no other settings. It works well as long as the bowls are REALLY COLD — we keep them (empty) in the freezer year round. It takes a good 20 minutes, sometimes longer, for most recipes to churn to a finished consistency, which is then about like soft serve. I’ve tried two new recipes this summer: coffee Heath Bar and Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper. I do not eat commercia strawberry ice cream; this homemade version simply tasted like the most delicious strawberry ice cream imaginable, either a tiny bit of black pepper heat.

I think my point is that I am voting “yes” f

That is the one I have, and yes, I keep the bowls in our trunk freezer.

I don’t make ice cream as much as I used to, though…it does not keep well after 4-5 days, so I was eating too much in order to not waste any. I suppose I should look into what you can do about that — the ice cream is so good!

Forgive me, Donnatella for I have sinned. I went ahead and ordered a bottle of Kiehl’s Original Musk Blend no 1 today. I had a gift card from Ulta and a $5 coupon burning a hole in my pocket. It was $42 before the coupon and gift card but I couldn’t resist getting it and a lip gloss too.

Love the photo. I am always amazed at how graceful, lithe and acrobatic cats are. Well, when they are not inadvertently flipping off the edge of the bed.

I started the morning with Le Mat, which I find to be a really intriguing rose perfume. I think it might be the combination of rose and immortelle that is so unusual. Then, midday I switched over to Calligraphy Rose, which is sweeter and fresher. Everything’s coming up roses, apparently (sorry).

Love the cat on the picture!

I skin-tested some scents in Kyiv stores today. Jul et Mad Secrets du Paradis Rouge – turned very plastick-y and synthetic on my skin. Scrubber. Tom Ford Beau de Jour – very masculine, barbershop and fougerish. Some people can rock it, I guess, but it is not my cup of tea. ELDO I am Trash (Les Fleurs de Déchet) – I did not expect to like it, but I did. No dreaded synthetic apple. There’s a smooth accord of fruits which are just starting to go bad, flowers and musk. May not sound appealing, but the overall effect is quite good in an unusual way. I can’t say I loved this scent, but I liked it.

Fellow NSTers, those of you who have or tried Berdoues Selva do Brazil and/or Scorza di Sicilia, what do you think of them? They are on sale here (in Ukraine), and the price is really low. I wanted to try them but could not find them in the stores near me. I can buy them online though. Maybe you will talk me out of it?

Just tried Berdoues Scorza di Sicilia from my “Grand Cru” discovery set of samples, since you mentioned it. I liked it well enough. The notes listed are citron, cedar and vetiver. My folks were out, and didn’t say anything when they got home, so I don’t think it’s a super-strong/long-lasting perfume. I’ll have to try the Selva do Brazil sample sometime.

Hi everyone. I’m trying out another sample I found in my unremembered box, AA Rose L’Orange. It’s appealing but too sweet, reminiscent of one of those yummy creamsicles of the olden days. Lots of vanilla in there. I also love that cat photo, and immediately went onto Flickr and gave it a fave. Perhaps the cat is a Turkish Van–they apparently like to swim!

I’m wearing vintage Bellodgia. I harvested the season’s first tomatoes from my garden this morning. I was so taken by the various types I bought six different plants this spring, and I can tell I will be hip-deep in tomatoes in about a month. This year the weather has been perfect for them. What are some good tomato leaf fragrances? I like the smell of my hands after I’ve brushed the leaves and the stems.

It’s been a hectic week, recovering a bit now on Sunday morning. I wore Annick Goutal’s Chèvrefeuille yesterday, I can barely detect it after an hour, but it is lovely while it lasts. Like some others of you have commented over the last few days, I prefer perfumes with a bit more oomph.
I’ll continue my testing of Serge Lutens’ Participe Passé after my shower. I like it, but it’s quite sweet, so I’m very undecided on a FB. It’s also quite smoky, when I dabbed some on a few days ago, my beloved asked if something was burning in the kitchen. Eeek – I don’t want my perfume to make people anxious!!
Love the photo of the cat. A pool would be bliss for our cat. She is very old (19 or 20), and her kidneys have been failing for a long time, so she drinks a huge amount of water. And because she’s nervous of going outside now, we go through truckloads of kitty litter :)

I had a fluffy white cat a long time ago when I lived in a small apartment complex with a pool. He liked to go outdoors and it was a fenced-in complex so it seemed safe. But once he fell into the pool! I saw it, but he got out right away and skedaddled back up the stairs to home. Poor fellow looked about 1/4 of his normal size with his fur all soaking wet. He was a Himalayan.

Trader Joe’s coconut body butter, which is probably not a great choice since I’m still in bear country. I am SO dry and SO itchy! The combination of mosquito bites (some of them 2-3 weeks old!) and dry skin has me itching like crazy. Finally broke down and bought some Deep Woods OFF, which is pretty useless out here. I look like I have smallpox! And the OFF leaves a white powdery residue like dry shampoo. Yuck!

Anyway, kinda looking forward to a routine where I don’t have to worry about bears and can wear anything I want, scentwise.

I’ve learned some important lessons these past weeks, one of which is next year, I will take a couple of months off in AUTUMN! Less people, fewer bugs and better temperatures. Hope everyone is having a fabulously fragrant summer so far.

Favorite no heat quick summer meal or snack, good for breakfast, lunch or dinner: some type of grainy whole wheat bread with a generous schmear of nut butter, a light drizzle of honey and sliced banana (although dried fruit like prunes are good, too). If you’re looking for a little texture, you can add a tablespoon of granola and press it into the nut butter. YUM! ?

Here is where we’re camped now for those interested. I wish I was into fly fishing because it’s quite popular on the stretch of river that’s in front of the campsite.

Went out for lunch (unheard of 2 days in a row). It’s pretty hot here so I guess we are just too lazy these days. Good thing that we usually cook once or twice for the week and have days worth of food. We eat lots of quinoa salad, grilled chicken and veggies or green salads for dinners.

Too hot to cook: shrimp — or, less glamorously, imitation crab. lol.
Sometimes I’ll make jasmine rice to go with the seafood, since cooking rice doesn’t involve turning on the oven. I’ve been eating sushi fairly frequently. Also, we’ve been eating a lot of chicken. I’ve been putting together salads from what’s at the salad bar at our local grocery store so we get some greens.

Not a documentary but footage of him and friends in the ‘70s around the time he went through a break up with his love/muse and was working on one of his better-known paintings. Hello fragrant friends! I have been takings a digital detox over the past two weeks. This involved checking email only once a day and no internet mobile browsing – and hence no NST. I hope I didn’t miss anything important or amazing.

Have been testing California Reverie from my recent swap. Its very very nice and I love the opening – but it doesn’t last at all. Not even as a skin scent. Argh! Maybe I should try on clothes.

Another like from the swap is 10
corso como but I have a feeling that will play better in cooler weather.

It’s a gorgeous day but I am sick in bed with a cold. Drinking hot ginger lemon and honey and hoping to feel good enough to go lie in the hammock later. Why be sick in bed when one can be sick in a hammock? ?

Today (Sunday) I tried two scents.
One is Comme des Garçons Peppermint and the other is Goutal Etoile d’une Nuit. I like both.

Peppermint is very realistic. Unfortunately, as many other minty perfumes, it does not last long. Still a good choice for the hot weather. I remember that someone recommended it here. Thank you!

Etoile d’une nuit is a delicious makeup scent. Vanillic iris-rose is what I am getting so far. Started a bit oily but then became powdery. I keep smelling my wrist and smiling.

Another lazy day under the AC while my husband and stepson fry themselves at day 2 of the heavy metal concert. I’m enjoying Iris Ganache.

That’s quite the concert if it’s lasting more than a few hours! ??

Sunday SOTM is Escale a Portofino. Painted one and a half walls in the bedroom yesterday afternoon, which caused some decorating readjustments to be required … which did a number on my back. Argh, but at least I smell wonderful.

My bedroom needs repainting as well but I am putting it off until the weather cools off. Good luck with your project.

My cat is the reverse of the adorable one in the photo, black and big (well, long hair big) but also handsome the vet’s nurse told me so several times.

Enjoying reading what people are eating

During these hot days I’ve been on a strawberry diet, we have wonderful red fruits here in the UK and affordable too. I also eat sorbets to try and avoid all the calories from ice cream.

I am in the 90’s reformulation of Vent Vert, crisp and easy to wear, it is now a skin scent 10 hours later.

Post shower is Mon Precieux Nectar after Mr Marzipan and I cut down three dead trees and shlepped them to the back of our property…I was dripping sweat after that ordeal! This smells like a dupe for Vanira Moorea which I already have :) :)

Love this weekend’s kitty picture! If it were black and its tail was twice as long, it would look like my Spooky kitty. Spooky loves playing in the water fountain that the cats have to drink from. ?

One of my favorite hot weather foods is radishes. I can easily eat an entire bunch of them.

SOTD(Weekend) = Clinique Wrappings, from the sample stash. This is such a great hot weather perfume! It is rapidly moving to the top of my full bottle wish list.

We had our own spooky kitty back in the day. Now eldest is babysitting her friend’s black cat with green eyes as much as possible because she desperately wants a cat!

Wrappings for me will always be a Christmas scent. It came out during the holidays and I bought it and I always associate it with Christmas trees for sale on Broadway…falling snow…Manhattan in December..

However, I could see how it would work in the summer too! Wait until after the holidays as Clinque usually puts it on sale! Some time in January.

I think I can wait that long for Wrappings. I do have my eye on a bottle of the old formulation of TM Angel EdT (the comet bottle), since it is being replaced by a fruity pink thing.

I did the reverse of “no cooking in the hot weather” — I took a cooking class and learned how to make pasta, a ragu sauce base, a peppery beef stew, and tiramisu. All divine. Can’t wait to try them on my own!

I had an absolutely wonderful time sniffing around at Nordstrom with springpansy and smellysmello (she’s an NSTer too but not a regular poster) yesterday. We smelled a LOT of perfumes and encountered many helpful SAs. I finally smelled the newer Diptyques, Tempo, Fleur de Peau, and Eau de Minthe, and didn’t fall for any of them. Smelled a bunch of Hermes – pretty much all the Hermessences I hadn’t smelled before. The ones I put on paper but not skin that I still want to try on skin are Iris Ukiyoe, Myrrhe Eglantine, and Cedre Sambac. Oh, and the other two ladies tried Cardamusc oil on skin, and it was lovely.

Here’s what I tried on skin: L’eau d’Hiver, Acqua di Parma Mandorlo di Sicilia, Lost Cherry, Rose Ikebana. I stopped at Sephora across the street before heading home and tried on Pacific Lime and Gucci Bloom Acqua di Fiore. I ended up buying a travel spray of L’eau d’Hiver. The SA gave me a couple samples, so after my shower last night I tried on Music For a While and found it to be awful. I also tried on EdM Bleue from a sample obtained yesterday, and while not bad, it’s not for me.

A super fun time, and we’re hoping to get together again in September for Neiman Marcus.

SOTD is Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche. Springpansy brought some unloved samples and decants, and this is one of her unloved decants that came home with me.

Today I wore Moon Bloom. Gosh what a pretty scent. It’s so pretty it actually lifts your mood! It hasn’t lasted well on me though. I should’ve worn it Friday! I only have a small dabber sample and am wondering if it lasts better when sprayed? For dinner I’m going to make a lentil salad with fancy Le Puy lentils from France (I ordered them from Amazon). I’ve never tried them before but they’re supposed to have a unique text and hold their texture well. There’s not much cooking, just have to simmer the lentils for 20 minutes, then combine with some chopped-up stuff and a dressing. I will report back on the result.

a unique TASTE not text. I guess I was thinking ahead to “texture.” Tired right now.
