Tuesday scent of the day 7/16

Posted by Robin on 16 July 2019 173 Comments

It's Tuesday and World Snake Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Annick Goutal Mandragore was so nice in the heat yesterday that I'm wearing it again. Tea at the moment is a small latte.

Reminder: on 7/19, wear a fragrance by Jo Loves, Jack Perfumes, Jardins D’Écrivains, Jul et Mad or Juliette Has A Gun, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter J.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the TenRen Silver Snake Yixing teapot is listed as temporarily out of stock. Their other Chinese Zodiac teapots run $79 each.

    Ciao NSTers
I am in vintage Miss Dior and drinking an espresso at VQ (again) Catching up on the New Yorker magazine

I smelled a By Killian in the wild, it was either Good Girl Gone bad or Dangerous Liaisons, either way, I didn’t realize the beautiful trail his perfumes leave in the wake as this woman was walking.

Have the 2 little ones in camp for a few hours is a blessing; the temperatures are so hot here.

AH, since today is world snake day it coincides with a gift I received this morning from a friend. Its a statue, I believe a Buddhist/Hindu statues of Naga Kanya which means daughter of the snake. She has wings and the lower half of her body is a snake. I love when people surprise me with these gifts when they travel to far off lands..

Hi austenfan, I missed your post yesterday so just went back to read it. NST readers are the best, aren’t they?

I can totally commiserate. I am not unhappy where I work now, but I still think (occasionally, not obsessively) about the first job I interviewed for here in Seattle (we moved here in 2017). I thought it was perfect for me but I didn’t get it. Who can say why? Maybe my interviewing skills were rusty. Maybe they didn’t think I was the perfect fit that I did. Maybe I wore the wrong clothes. Maybe it wouldn’t have been as great as I thought? My current job suits me fine – for the moment. I hope that you do find something that is close to what you really want.

I just took a sniff of my wrist and had to think really hard about what I’d put on this morning (about 6 hours ago now.) It’s SL Vetiver Oriental. It’s back to humid here and when I stepped outside shortly after applying it, it immediately bloomed and was quite breathtaking.

I had planned to top it up with Carven Vetiver, which I shall do shortly.

Apparently we’re not supposed to get excited about Prime Day, but I was sunscreen shopping this a.m. and figured I’d take a look. Supergoop products are 30% off, which is the best discount I’ve ever gotten on the stuff (I’ve been using their products for years. Good stuff.)

Oh, and also a shout-out to Bloomingdales. I’d not really shopped much there until recently. I bought something when they were running some kind of deal where you get $50 to spend later if you spend $X now. I returned the thing I bought, but the $50 was still in my b-wallet after I returned it. Then I bought another thing using the $50 and returned that. I figured that was all said and done, but I got a $50 gift card from them in the mail yesterday. Which will obviously be used toward a perfume purchase.

“Official” summer in Seattle (according to meteorologist Cliff Maas) just started yesterday, so hopefully the weather will turn.

Nothing’s worse than when it never starts, though. Or is only a few weeks long.

4711 Myrrh and Kumquat, thanks to Pixel’s split. Love it and it is very long lasting. I think is a little sweet for the overwhelming summer heat, so I will save it for colder temps and enjoy it even more then.

    Good morning, everyone!

I’m asking for partial points, wearing Jeffrey Dame Labdanum Doux. I decanted the sample into an atomizer, which helps this one a lot. The sweetness comes out when sprayed, but still lots of peach and ylang. Probably better in the fall. I could call this Mitsouko Junior.

Tea of the morning is Harney Earl Grey Supreme.

Iced tea lemonade and leather ?. I am working from home today and I haven’t stepped outside yet – dreading it because it is supposed to be a steam bath out there! I am quite happy to not subject myself to a train commute.

Eau de Neroli Dore today. Also spritzed on some of the “rehydrating neroli water” that came with a recent Beautyhabit purchase and it is fantastic.

I’m giving a short presentation at a staff meeting this afternoon, so I dressed up a bit- I’m wearing a black blouse with velvet trim, black pencil skirt, and a pair of pointy tortoiseshell earrings.

More iced green tea for this steamy morning.

Yes, it’s the Kerstin Florian. Smells wonderful, but overpriced, imo. The ingredients are just orange blossom water and preservatives. (I could get a bottle of orange blossom water from the specialty grocery down the street for <$5)

And thanks everybody for the well wishes on my presentation! It went fine and I'm happy it's over.

Oh my Gosh world snake day! I wish I could remember the name of that perfume with the 2 snakes on it. It was a very popular one too.

SOTD is Mandy Aftelier’s Alchemy. This is so rich and floral with Ylang Ylang as the star and some lovely jasmine as the supporting cast- it is potent and feels cool in this horrid heat.

Now I am lemming Grev – thanks to Angela yesterday. I am off to find some samples.

I’m wearing Panthere de Cartier, the one with the cap that looks like a panther and not the one in the bottle that looks like a panther face. I’m still mad Cartier discontinued this one to launch the pink one.

I guess I am lucky that it’s teapot Tuesday because I have a snake phobia. I don’t enjoy the teapot personally, but at least it’s not a picture of a real snake.

I am wearing January Scent Project Selperniku, which is apricot, salt, butter, and milk. I remember thinking it was too sweet when I first tried it, but I’m really enjoying it now. The apricot is lovely and the perfume doesn’t wear too heavy.

I’m plinking/tinking/thunking the last of my vintage Dune today. I still have a half mini from 2012. I don’t count that as vintage though, just older.

The mini I have is still very nice. There is just something special about a perfume that has traveled a couple of decades. I’m not a very good perfume Hunter, so I won’t be replacing it.

Okay, the J theme inspired me to pull out my J-Scent samples. Judging from what I’ve read and been told, these are pleasant and innocuous so I figured why not try all five that I was sent?

Hydrangea: smells kinda like hyacinths, lilac and iris for 10 minutes, then white musk.

Hanamachi: slightly stale and sour powder, then white musk.

Rakugan: chewing tobacco, grape Mr. Bubble and urinal cake.

Paper Soap: Ivory bar soap with maybe a hint of lemon? Or I’m dressing it up to make the best of things?

The first two were actually fine, so I kept going. That’s when things went south. I have one more left, Honey and Lemon. I can only hope it will cure what’s ailing me as the name suggests…

Blanche Immortelle to wear in the heat. I like what happens.

Spent too much yesterday. It just adds up when you take advantage of sale prices on stuff you’ve been thinking about. Add that to my husband and I needing new glasses prescriptions and each finding something we like at Warby Parker. Happy they make progressives now.

Seeing The Farewell later today. I saw the preview a few weeks ago and knew I wanted to see it.

Yes. WP is cheaper. But…what I should do is take older frames in and get new lenses at Costco. My sister did that, and it was very reasonable. Of course I’d have to join Costco… I do have an old pair that I may have done as bifocals with no distance. Just computer and reading.

This is worth noting! I have some old frames I like quite a bit, but the prescription is not current.

          16 July 2019 at 11:19 pm

I almost did that, then I got worried…the progressive lenses themselves are so expensive, and I adore the frames I have now but they’re probably 5 years old — afraid they won’t last another 5 years? So probably I’ll just keep wearing them until I come across something I like better.

I have done it before with regular lenses / frames, though, and with sunglasses. It’s a good idea in general.

Just for reference, my sister took my dad’s huge wire frame glasses in for new progressives at Costco. Anti-glare, transitions. Just under $200. WP charges $300 w/o transitions.

          • Robin says:
            18 July 2019 at 11:36 am

Thanks LizzieB! That is a great price. If my current frames were in perfect shape I’d probably go for it.

But maybe if I buy frames online I’ll go over to Costco for the lenses.

Ever since I have finished my extrait bottle of Cuir de Russie a couple days ago, I am starting to work on my quarter ounce bottle of no 19 extrait bottle. My logic is to finish some of the extrait to make some kind of room in my perfume cabinet and no matter how little the bottle is, space is space. I am not wearing no 19 today but commando right now and thinking of Kyoto since it’s so hot out.

It’s a pity that I can’t find any of the CdG incense line on Amazon. I could have used my gift card balance to pay at least 75% of that $95 for Avignon. The whole line is great but they don’t last long on my skin.

Ineke Idyllwild, from the discovery set. I’m trying to decide if I want to redeem the $15 coupon for a bottle – I’m tying to low-buy, but August is my birthday month so ….. so far the leading contenders are Field Notes from Paris and Idyllwild with Hothouse Flowers as a dark horse pick (because I don’t have a lot of white flowers in my collection).

Last night I tried one of the Chanel samples I got from hajusuuri (Thank you!). That was Paris-Biarritz. I’ll go look at the reviews, and see what the experts said. :) I liked it. :)
