Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, Bastille Day weekend 2019

Posted by Robin on 13 July 2019 279 Comments

It's July; (my) local peaches are in season. Plus, it's Patrick Stewart's birthday on Saturday (you've already seen the teaser for Star Trek: Picard, right?) and Bastille Day* on Sunday. We're celebrating all of it with our usual open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite peach fragrance, the fragrance you'd wear after you won the Bastille Day Waiters Race, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

* You can find places to celebrate Bastille Day in the US here.

    First one posting!

We are having around 30 ppl over for a backyard bbq in a few hours and I am trying not to stress. We prepped a ton of sides already and the only thing left is the grilling. I always go for chicken thighs cuz they are easy. And dogs and veggie burgers.

I went with Rose Delight body oil. Figured it would be better then perfume in the heat.

We did alot of vegetarian sides. A new one I tried is pea salad, which is apparently a Midwest bbq/easter staple. I left out the bacon but kept the cheese cubes. It was very addictive

What do you use as the dressing for said pea and macaroni salads? I love stuff like that but they’re kind of out of my culinary zone so I never get them quite right.

My aunt used to make one with small shell pasta, tuna, sweet pickles and black olives. And probably peas. I get cravings for it a lot in summer.

I used sour cream, mayo and vinegar. I could also imagine substituting greek yoghurt for the sour cream for a healthier option

Oh I don’t usually make said pea salad, lol, I can find at my local grocery deli.
I know my gramma and great aunties used to make it and I’m guessing the base was just Hellman’s Mayo, thinned a bit with milk.

I fully approve of vegetarian side dishes because I’m vegetarian and sometimes bbqs I get invited to are all about meat. Your pea salad sounds delicious and glad it all went well, enjoy the rest from cooking now.

Yesterday I wore Berdoues Peng Lai about which I forgot to tell you so I hope you don’t mind if I tell you know.

When I came home for the weekend I had a tiny package from Ormonde Jayne waiting for me. They were very kind to send me a sample set of their newest Elixir Collection. Turns out this collection is 5 of their well-known fragrances but they are tweaked and pushed to the limits. For today I chose Royal Elixir which is a stunning green-floral-spicy-oriental.

And this morning I woke up to a rain! A first proper rain in a couple of months. We need more rain in Poland so I hope this one wasn’t just the accident.

    Happy weekend to you all!

I’m wearing Dior Cuir Cannage layered over Nuxe floral dry oil. Normally I layer it over my Couvent des Minimes orange blossom body cream but I’m getting nervous about it running out, as it is discontinued.

Does anyone know of a good orange blossom cream/lotion (not Jo Malone) that is sweet and a bit fruity, not green or fresh? The Couvent des Minimes one is very gourmand, sort of like SL Fleurs d’Oranger.

I used to use the L’Occitane Neroli & Orchidee shower gel, which is a vanillic orange blossom. Comes in body lotion. It’s a little too sweet for me personally as a perfume, but fits your criteria, methinks?

    Happy Saturday!

SOTD = Parfums MDCI Chypre Palatin

I picked this after reading Lucas’ post re: Pleasant Surprises. I would normally only think of this everything and the kitchen-sink Classic vibe powdery powerhouse when the weather is cooler but thought I would take my chances. And…it worked, likely because it was not yet humid when I was out and about this morning!

One of my latest obsessions, besides the Guerlain 190 years anniversary perfume, is Lush Twilight Body Spray. It is sweet lavender with lots of Tonka. The packaging is similar to spray cleaners like Windex (except smaller and cuter) and delivers a wide swath of coverage with one spray. It supposedly helps one sleep but my normal sleep-deprived status wouldn’t know the difference ?. Have you tried this or any of the Lush body sprays? Do tell!

Now back to preparing packages for mailing!

Oh good, so I’m not the only one. The scent haunted me for a week until I went back again to respell all the body sprays and this was the one I kept thinking about. I understand there used to be a perfume with the same name; maybe they will bring it back!

Well, the good thing is that the Lush spray shouldn’t be as expensive as the 190 ans anniversaire perfume. It was a few days ago, but I remember some enablers trying hard to get someone to buy a $14,000 bottle of perfume. I believe it was you, and that you nobly refused their playful attempts at persuasion. That is a large amount of money. Like you said, you could take several really nice family vacations for that. I was laughing at those folks who were like, “Do eeet! Do eeet!”

I heard a fascinating interview on NPR yesterday with a peach specialist on a farm in South Carolina. He explained that they call some peaches “melting” ones and those are the ones that will drip juice down your face when you eat them. I’m sure you agree with me, those are the best!

Sorry! Posting to Canada is just such a pain…

4711’s do tend to smell like the name. No Le Labo fun & games here. Lavender & Thyme is about 50/50 on the two main notes. Lemon & Ginger opens with a big lemon blast but quickly shifts to 50/50. White Peach & Coriander opens with a fun peach note, then goes all coriander, then mild peach comes back later. YMMV of course :)

Both peaches and nectarines that I bought at a local stand (in Chadds Ford PA) were so good that I went back today to buy more.

Also amazing tomatoes, which I assume they must start in a hot house…but no store-bought hothouse tomato this year has been worth eating, so I am thinking they started them inside and moved them outside?

Eau des Merveilles Bleue from the super cute tiny bottle-half a spritz before gym. Trying the Kiste again. I’m thinking of swapping it. If anyone is interested, I’m open to ideas. US only. If it’s ok to announce before the official swap meet.

I’m covered in a bunch of scents as I spent a great and rather fragrant afternoon in Antwerp.
I started my day in Manoumalia and (re)tried a bunch of scents this afternoon: Rive Gauche which I remember loving back in the day and still seems in pretty good shape. Mon Guerlain (edp), I just adore this one. Not a masterpiece but just so wearable. Two Cartiers: Carat and Baiser Volé. Both great, have a slight preference for BV.
I then moved on to another shop and tried the Amouage Tuberose (just on a card this time). It’s nice enough but there are greater tuberoses out there. And Montale’s Patchouli Leaves which surprised me, I like it a great deal.
Found some Bulgarian honey on the market and some rose jam. The honeys are wonderful and so is the jam. All in all a good day!

That sounds like a terrific day. I wore Mon Guerlain Florale last night but I prefer the original as it has a bit more character, and I like the lavender …I thunked my bottle of the original very quickly.

I was walking around the neighbourhood yesterday and noticed snowdrops in my neighbours’ gardens so JM white moss and snowdrop for me. Wintersweet is also in flower, what a lovely scent when everywhere looks so drab and grey. Is there a wintersweet perfume? I am currently rereading some of my favourite books from my bookshelf…Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson yesterday.

It was a blind buy but I enjoyed wearing it in summer, during hot weather as it was fresh yet spicey without being dramatic . In winter it seems a bit pale but layers well with nutmeg and ginger. Not a love but not a disaster and I have used about half of the bottle so it must fall into that ‘ spray as you pass by’ category .

Hmm, testing out Guerlain’s AA Ginger Picante and I get way less ginger mileage than I was hoping for. This is definitely not the case on my fiancé who smells deliciously gingery for a good 2-3hrs. But the first 10min smell so delightfully of fresh cut ginger root (with a touch of that earthy element that keeps it from going into candy territory) that I’m tempted to go for it anyway…

I tested it a few times and went back to the Guerlain shop to pick it up. It stays pretty gingery on me and I can also detect a rosiness in it as well. I’m not buying much these days but I really enjoyed this so why not! In the past I’ve worn R&G Gingembre and still have a bit of that left. Sadly they are discontinuing their products in Canada. They’ve been available here for years. I spoke to one salesperson who said they had loyal fans and the products always sold very well. ☹️

It’s hot here and I’m procrastinating… I put on Amazone this morning, which I can finally smell! For a few years it was incredibly faint to me (to the point where I ordered a second mini because I was worried the first one had been faked with colored water!) – this is a weird phenomenon, also happened to me with Bulgari Black. Couldn’t smell it at all at first, then started to get a few hints, and now love it! So strange.

Now I’m wearing the last of my sample of Dear Polly (plink!) because it was on my wishlist forever and during my procrastination I spotted a partial bottle on eBay and I had a big eBay coupon, so now I have 50 ml of Dear Polly coming to me for $50! Lucky find. I’d never buy Vilhelm at full price but do love this, I think it might be my favorite tea scent.

It’s gorgeous! A very heady, creamy, white and yellow floral. Ylang-ylang features in it strongly. It’s on the sweet side but I find some spice in there, almost a nutmeg quality, though none is mentioned in the notes. It does have sandalwood and vanilla too, which probably add to the gourmand aspect. It’s a pretty complex scent and not simply a tuberose bomb.

Today I wore my new experiment of Orange Sanguine plus Terracotta. Because I couldn’t decide. It worked out pretty well! I did a mini perfume clear out, and took roughly thirty manufacturers samples to work and left them for people to take. I also left some VS body sprays. I had quite a few Aura samples, and it seemed to be the most popular. I will see what’s left tomorrow.

I have been MIA forever- first vacation, then catching up, then vacation bible school at my church which wrapped up yesterday. I run the music room and it’s tiring – 3 straight hours of singing and dancing with 140 kids total! So – while on vacation I bought Chanel Paris-Deauville (today’s SOTD); and travel sizes of Heretic Dirty Mango and Blocki This Grand Affair. The latter two are waiting for my August Birthday!

I spent the first half of the day in Moon Bloom, even finished off the decant, and the second half in Diletantte, so it’s been a Hiram Green day. Had a lovely, simple day. Went out for brunch, walked through an urban park to get to a couple stores and stopped 10 minutes to watch some young teens play a league baseball game, picked up a new jigsaw puzzle, and had a scoop of gooey butter cake ice cream. A pretty nice Saturday!

Oh, I also should have mentioned that we bought a double-sided puzzle! It’s of a vintage dollhouse. One side is the exterior of the dollhouse with a fun vintage wallpaper surrounding it and the other side is the interior of the dollhouse. So this is a new challenge for us.

About to go to bed in Ineke Field Notes. FB arrived today, got it 20% off in a 4th of July sale.

Failed blind buy arrived Thursday: Guerlain Santal Royal. Just a purse spray. Haven’t skin tested, but my room today reeked from the paper I’d sprayed, and my reaction: Nope. So do I give it a proper skin test? Or call it done? Sigh.

Wearing Musc Nomade. Bought a mini blind more that a year ago (a dabber) and couldn’t smell it at first. It took a year of wearing it when I wanted to wear something, but not something demanding attention, to grow on me. I recently bought a full bottle as it is now one of my favourites. I have since decided to not get rid of anything in a haste as some perfumes go out of favor only to return better liked than before. And thanks to Tannina and SKPaint I did go and sample Covet again and you’ll have to wait for the damage polls to hear the outcome…

Saturday morning I went to read Friday’s thread and saw the comments about the eminent re-opening of SSS. I remembered that I’d been hoarding the last few ml from my Champagne du Bois bottle and spent the day enveloped in a Champagne du Bois bubble. That stuff is glorious. Hoping it gets resurrected; I will buy the biggest bottle available.

Am now enjoying the traces of a 2:30 a.m. spritz of Gourmand Coquin. I woke up and didn’t go back to sleep right away; perfume always helps. The smoky note in this is intoxicating. My bedroom smelled of it all winter long from frequent wearing.

Am craving something citrussy and refreshing for the day, once I’m up and about (Eau du Sud, most likely.) It has been hot and DRY for the past week or so. My skin is not happy. I did a sheet mask last night, followed by winter-level product layering. I may have to do the same every night until the humidity returns. I’ve also added back like 3 more layers to my a.m. routine. Grump.

My H is going to make NYT Peruvian Chicken tonight, which is out-of-this-world delicious. I’m very excited :D The cilantro sauce is good enough to bathe in. And now I feel like dinner should be followed by some peaches…

This weekend is Art Fair on the Square here. Artists from all over the country line both sides of the street around the four blocks of the capitol. Literally hundreds of booths. I always get up early and try to beat the heat and humidity, but every year more people have the same idea as me.? Last year I got a pair of birthstone earrings that I wear all the time and yesterday I got a little sun pendant. I love having some unique pieces that not everyone else would have.
SotD was Tam Dao again, and when that faded I layered on some Santal Blush which definitely has more staying power. But that price. Ouch.
We ended the day at a nearby county fair. Saw lots of farm animals and then ate some terrible carnival food for dinner. My teenager was aghast, “we’re eating HERE?!?” Lol. It’s good to break out of one’s comfort zone every now and then.
I think today will be Coromandel. It is just so, so good.

I adore Coromandel and am so glad I bought the big bottle a couple of years ago — don’t need to worry about running out. You smell great!

I’m considering buying some Tam Dao but need to know the real difference between the edp and the edt. My sample was the edt and I loved it, but if the edp is even better…

My preference is the edp. To my nose, it’s rounder, softer, and denser, while the edt is sharper and more “cedary”. That said, on a close friend, the edt was magical, and the edp wasn’t great, so maybe test if you can?

        Thanks!
I’ve tested both and they are pretty similar to my nose, but I find the edt “airier” if that makes sense. The edp is definitely longer lasting though, also more expensive.
I got a good deal on a 30 ml bottle from Neiman Marcus by signing up for their email list and getting a 15% off code. I know some other NSTers took advantage of that deal too. Now I get the additional entertainment of emails promoting $3000 handbags that I will never be able to buy.?

A friend and I designed our own fragrances at Note Fragrances yesterday (no affiliation). My creation was a spicy carnation/rose and fairly successful, I think! I started through the comments yesterday but got derailed by Pixel’s split- I’ve been wanting to try that lavender but didn’t want to commit to a whole bottle, eventhough they’re inexpensive. So, thanks Pixel!
I had a rosy weekend, perfume-wise: I wore Dior La Colle Noire during the day and topped off with SL Sa Majeste… last night. Kashan Rose today.
I went down a new rabbit hole which is semi-precious gemstone bracelets. I love those simple elastic beaded bracelets you get in those Tibetan stores. So many beautiful stones out there, but they’re like $20 and up per bracelet. I also need to restring a bracelet whose elastic is losing its tensile strength so that started the the etsy and Amazon quest 1st for elastic, then the beads.
I ordered dragon’s blood jasper, labradorite, and peridot to start. Should be fun and a lot cheaper than buying them made already!

Not lilyjo, but my first response to Orchid Soleil was that it smells like buttercream frosting (and not necessarily in a good way.) But I kept going back for more & more licks off the spoon and have grown to like/love (it’s still a bit too rich sometimes.)

It smells very similar to the deep drydown of Elle L’Aime, but like x200, because Tom Ford.

Orchid Soliel is extremely creamy. To me, it has the texture of sweetened condensed milk. It has taken me many samples to be able to wear it, and not think it is overwhelming. I really only have terracotta to compare it with, but it’s bigger tuberose, more depth, imo, sexier. That could be the Tom Ford association though, lol.

I’m not wearing a peachy scent today. I’m in my recent purchase of EL’s Bronze Goddess. But I am eating a lot of peaches lately! The shops are full of traditional peaches and wild peaches and I can’t choose between them, so I buy both! The wild peaches are a bit sweeter.

When it gets very hot again, I’ll be wearing my beloved Ramon Monegal’s Dubai Next to Me, which is very boozy and peachy. It is also such a powerhouse that it makes Jungle Elephant seem like a total lightweight! So I first put on a light spray of Portrait of a Lady and then spritz Dubai into the air and walk through it. That is the only scent I own that I don’t spray directly onto my skin. I use the POAL to make it a bit more feminine.

My other “peach” scent is Keiko Mecheri’s Passiflora, which to me smells very much like freshly cut nectarines (although most people interpret it as a mango note). It is a lovely, deliciously fresh yet floral fragrance. Alas, like everything I’ve tried from KM, it disappears very quickly and needs to be reapplied often. (It does last on fabric).

Retesting Trayee this morning. I remember really liking this the first time I tried it, but am less enthused now. Maybe it’s the warmer weather. Or maybe it’s my nose again – I’m having sinus trouble and everything seems to smell differently lately. Yesterday I spritzed on Mediterraneo and it disappeared in about two minutes – it’s always a bit fleeting, but not usually THAT fleeting.

Commando most of yesterday. We went to see a fireworks display in a nearby park. They had food trucks, too, which I was quite interested in. :D The fireworks were nice.

At bedtime, I put on a spray of Berdoues Peng Lai.

    Commando so far today.

Yes. :) I got souvlaki and spanakopita from a food truck that I think was called “Phyllodelphia.” I got arancini (rice balls) from another truck, and from another, I got “red, white and blueberry” gelato, which I shared. :) I passed the gelato over to Mom to share, and she just kept eating it until I noticed she hadn’t passed it back. lol

In the early evening — put on 4711 Lemon & Ginger body spray. And then sprayed again a couple of hours later. :)

Been commando all weekend at the lake. I love my our airstream weekends. They’re like mini vacations. We really needed some peace and quiet after the whirlwind of having the kids in town. Will probably do some sample testing after I get home and shower though. Will report back!

I am envious of your Airstream getaways. I just love getting out of the city.

Just back home late from a full day outing. Hermes Eau de Neroli Dore kept me company for most of day but it’s pretty much gone now, will think of some big perfume for tonight.

Love eating peaches, the definition of summer but not so fond of peaches in perfume, except in Diorella and Jaipur.

I used to like the original Jaipur very much, never tried a current version. Have you?

Boucheron discontinued the original Jaipur, there is a flanker still in production: Jaipur Bracelet but I haven’t tried it.
Totally agree with you the original one is fruity goodness.

Yesterday, I finished the last of Le Labo 39 iris oil. It was nice, but never satisfied my iris cravings. Too fleeting and not worth the price.

I have also been trying for the last couple of days some Nomenclature samples that a generous NSTer sent me.
Para_iso and Adr_ett were too bland, watery, with no depth. Not full bottle or decant worthy.
I found Holy_Wood and Shi_ So more appealing. I liked Shi_So very much, but unfortunately all scents are very fleeting, with very low sillage. It was interesting try them, though.

Thanks for the mini reviews! Some of those names seem unnecessarily complicated, lol

        Thank you, I wish?.
I have not tried the perfume, so I don’t know how it performs, but definitely the oil behaved very poorly on me, in every season.

This line feels goofy to me, but I do like Efflor_esce.

I still have to try that one. Hopefully, I would like it better than the others. However. Shi_ So wear really good on me and I like it a lot!

JM Orris and Sandalwood to end the weekend. Such a peaceful scent, imo.
