Thursday scent of the day 7/4

Posted by Robin on 4 July 2019 170 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Fourth of July! What fragrance are you wearing?

Theme of the day: layering for hot humid weather. Carthusia Mediterraneo over Tauer Perfumes Rose Delight Body Oil.

Reminder: 7/5 will be Dealer's Choice, edition 3...propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme. (We did this in 2015 and 2017.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try (but usually fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    ?Happy Fourth of July!?
I’m in California Reverie. Because California is one of the fifty states, and well, it just smells great.
My dad is driving in one of the local parades and madtownteen is going to ride with him and throw candy. What is a parade without candy?

After a miserably cold and rainy spring, summer has set in with a vengeance, and for no reason at all I reached for SL Fourreau Noir, which is pretty seasonless. I mean, when *isn’t* it time for lavender and black licorice?

Robin, that happened to me last summer! I ordered a couple of boxes of live ladybugs to help me out. I also sprayed with diluted soap (kitchen dawn dishwashing soap is recommended) and water.
I had them everywhere! I think they thrive in the high heat & humidity.

That must be it, the humidity, or we’ve lost our ladybug population maybe. So you released ladybugs in your yard, and it helped?

What are your thoughts on the edp and extrait?

I like the edt, but the extrait is just brilliant imho. The edt was less rosy, less suede, and more herbal or green. The parfum is richer, smoother, but still has this herbaceous/greenblue note cutting through it that keeps it from being heavy. It’s rich and lovely and very unique.

The parfum is deeper, richer and has leather. I also like the EDP which is more floral and citrusy. If I had to pick one, I would pick the parfum.

I was all set to wear Brin de Reglisse for umami today… then I remembered I didn’t have to go to work! So I went for a weirder/more powerhouse scent in Olympic Orchids Devilscent #3. I love this and it will probably be my first FB purchase from her. It’s a little too clove-and-cherry to be really umami, but smoky enough that I think it counts (and it has a truffle note listed, which I don’t get a ton of but that’s as umami as it gets!)

What I love about the women’s football is the fact that they are just there for the sport. I really dislike men’s football. I have no interest whatsoever in watching a bunch of overpaid prima donna’s not making a proper effort. I’m sure I’m exaggerating but you get my general drift.

I guess cycling should be an area where we excel since we do it so much.
My favourite Dutch sport to watch is speed skating, which is where we have been really successful.

I’m riveted by the women’s World Cup. I love how intense everyone is and how they’ve worked so hard to become elite athletes with very little league or federation support- it’s obvious that they just truly love to play.

Experimenting again…I had gotten little packets of Institut Tres Bien colognes. I expected the little foil-lined paper packet would have something like an alcohol swab with perfume on it. Nope — the little packet just had the liquid inside. Now the bed and my arms and legs smell like Italian cologne. Fortunately it’s a nice scent as far as I’m concerned, but I didn’t expect the liquid to go everywhere.

Neither had I! Next time I’ll know, and try not to spill the liquid like that. I still have samples of the French and Russian colognes from Institut Tres Bien.

I’ve had a couple of themes this week, I guess. I’ve wavered back and forth between wearing fragrances that are comforting to me and feeling like experimenting. The vanilla scents are comforting to me, and some of the citrus or floral perfumes.

It’s a milliliter or a fraction of a milliliter in each packet, I think. The packets strongly resemble those that hold individual tea bags. Still, the drops went a long way. But I’ll definitely keep a little cup around to tip excess “juice” into when I experiment with colognes that are packaged that way.

Thank you for the advice, kpaint. :)

Yes, that was fortunate. :) Mom had a coughing spell, but she’s had coughing fits for several days from allergies in general. I was in another room, and she didn’t say anything about a cologne smell coming from the room I was in.

My bedroom, on the other hand, seems to have acquired a semi-permanent perfume or cologne smell. The notes depend on what I’ve spilled or experimented a lot with in the last few days. Sometimes I’ll try something right before bed. (I change the sheets every few days, but not every day.) And there seem to be some perfumes so strong that the fragrance comes through a plastic bag. idk

After I’d washed my arms and legs, I switched to a few sprays of the 4711 Acqua Colonia Pink Pepper & Grapefruit. It doesn’t last long, but it’s not really meant to. I find that fragrance comforting for some reason. I even ordered some of the other sorts of 4711 Acqua Colonia fragrances that I didn’t get decants of from Pixel’s 4711 Incident. What I ordered were the 2.5 oz. body sprays rather than the 5.7 oz. bottles, though. I don’t know where I’d put bottles that size.

I’ll be listening to fireworks for the next few hours. I hope those who celebrate the 4th of July have had a nice holiday. :)

    Happy Independence Day!

I am sampling two more from Panah right now…Brandied Pear and Strawberry Delight.

BP is a green, herbal pear w/ some spice…a pear gourmand. I’m not generally a fan of pear and won’t need more.

SD is pretty much straight strawberry and chocolate. It’s nice but there are more interesting chocolate fragrances out there.

Yesterday I tried their Pink Champage truffle and that one was a winner…may need to get a bottle but it is pretty over priced imho. I generally think $1 to $2.50 per ml is ok. $3 to $4 is getting into ludicrous territory methinks. As many of you know, I like to cite Lura Turin’s statement from his defunct blog re: price, “so let’s say $120 or so for 100 ml of EdP or a half ounce of proper extrait”. So $1.20 per ml.

Maybe we also need independence from overpriced niche perfume prices. :)

I’m doing a note side-by-side comparison of ylang-ylang scents with Isis (Agonist) on my left hand and Fleur des Comores (MPG) on my right. Both are pretty sweet. FdC is a bit sweeter with a somewhat narcotic white flower aspect and some fruity aspects (black currant). Isis is a bit more spicy with a slight citrus note. Both are heavy on vanilla too. It will be interesting to see how they develop. Can anyone suggest other perfumes with a strong ylang-ylang aspect? I’m realising it’s really one of my most favourite perfume notes.

I think Femme de Rochas and Joy de Patou are both big on yang-ylang. And APOM as well. I’m not very good at picking out notes, but I have a feeling it might be high on my list too.

I love this note too: Molton Brown Ylang-Ylang is a good replacement for the discontinued Aqua Allegoria Ylang-Vanille, Private Collection Amber-Ylang and I love the ylang note in these classics: Chanel No 5 and Eau Premiere and especially Guy Laroche Fidji. Enjoy your quest.

      Other ylangs:
Keiko Mecheri (A) Fleur de Peau (sweet and very leathery)
      Goutal Vanille Charnelle

Day 4 of Summer Perfumes I Forget To Wear: EL Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia. This is balanced so nicely. No celebrations for me today, I’m mowing the lawn and then kicking back with a book and a cocktail. Parades just make me bored and sunburned and I’ve never been big on barbequing–probably pasta for dinner.

Woke up ridiculously early (4 a.m.) for the 2nd day in a row but this time I managed to go back to sleep for a couple of hours. Must’ve been the Prada Vetiver I thought to put on, which I reupped after waking.

No plans here, just having a lazy day. I have a tradition of watching Hello, Dolly on the 4th, which I’ll probably do tonight. Leading into it with some Sean Connery Bond sounds like a good idea.

Thanks for talking me out of/into lemons & limes yesterday. No one talked me out of Elle L’Aime so I bought a mini of that plus the Thymes Tupelo Lemongrass. Cheap summer flings!

I started hearing cicadas outside in the past week, so summer is well and truly here. Fireflies have been a no-show, however. I think that is because one of their favorite trees to hang out by toppled over earlier in the year and was removed.

It is officially the second heat wave of the summer here. “July the Hot” indeed!

No special plans for today, except for having a cold Coke with cane sugar right out of the fridge.

SOTD = L’Artisan Un Air de Bretagne EdP, from the sample stash. It strongly reminds me of Hermes Eau des Merveilles Bleue.

That Coke was VERY good… cut right thru the humidity for a little bit.

4th of July is typical for cicadas out here, so I’m glad that they have showed up. Still bummed about the fireflies, though.

Costco featured cane sugar Coke this week. I don’t know why we can’t make that standard in the U.S.

Re: fireflies – they’re all flitting around in northern NJ. The humidity was not bad around 7:30 so a bunch of us went for a 1.5 mile walk around the neighborhood, (I) had a large plate of dessert, then sat outside for a chat on everything and nothing, including catty judgement on the host’s cousin who has had so much non-medically required plastic surgery that she looked 20 years older than her older sisters AND the plastic surgeon refused to do any more.

SOTD is JM Myrrh and Tonka just because I really like it and I can wear whatever I want on my day off. It’s a little too strong for the office, I think. I went out for breakfast with a friend then stopped by Goodwill. I got a couple good pairs of summer pants, light, breathable fabrics and a few books. I watched an episode of Big Little Lies earlier and saw some perfumes on Reese Witherspoon’s character’s dresser. I didn’t pause it to figure out any more, but I saw the white bottle of Narciso Rodriguez among them.

Continuing with the CP and wearing my vacation perfume purchases. Tonight I have on 2 sprays of Guerlain Samsara edt.

I made the mistake of watching Lisa Eldridge’s video on her summer lippies again. Kept obsessing over one of them and caved last night; I’ve NEVER spent so much on a lipstick, but I don’t have that color in my stash. Now I can’t wait to get it!
