Wednesday scent of the day 6/26

Posted by Robin on 26 June 2019 261 Comments

Happy Hump Day and happy Chocolate Pudding Day!  What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: still at the lake, still in Cutter Lemon Eucalyptus.

Reminder: 6/28 will be Time Travel Friday...wear a perfume that takes you back in time, or reminds you of something / somewhere in your past. It does not have to be a perfume you wore in the past! Suggested by chocolatemarzipan8.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Robin, I’m in your patented Eau des Merveilles/Eau Claire des Merveilles layering today so you’re vicariously scented in something other than Cutter’s. :) Hope you’re having a wonderful time!

I really love Nirvana Rose. I think it’s my favorite of the line. It’s very well done for a “celebrity” scent. It’s got a good bit of vetiver which I love. It’s an easy go-to for me. I have a little roller ball travel size but I’d love the full bottle (I really like those Nirvana bottles)!

I am not into EL fragrances but I am sampling Azuree from the freebiemeet. Holds up very nicely in the heat and it’s gorgeous. Does anyone know of a shower gel or lotion that smells similar? I would love to bath in it, but not literally
    ?

I sometimes buy vintage Azuree bath oil on ebay, it is very wonderful.

In other “non perfume” related news, I decided to take a sabbatical from facebook. It felt good to deactivate my account. I told myself it will just be for the summer. I have never “left” social media since I signed up when FB first came into fruition. However, I do have a insta feed, and I enjoy that much more. Especially following photos of the Marriage Freres tea houses. I am wondering if taking this break if I will ever go back.

Good for you! I’ve never had, and never plan to have a fb account. I also have insta, and that seems to be more my speed. I have friends and family pressuring me all the time “you have to get on Facebook!” Um, no actually I don’t, social media is not mandatory.?

I have a couple of friends who wonder why I don’t use Facebook, but it didn’t seem like a good communication medium for me. I prefer e-mail or chat. (Or commenting on blogs.)

I tried Tumblr, but didn’t really get the rules for replying. Also, I like to communicate in paragraphs at a time. (Many of you may have noticed this. lol)

Some Millennials I know avoid talking to most people on the phone, and will only text. One I know had hurt feelings from what I thought was a reasonable statement, and didn’t tell me until a later text conversation that her feelings were hurt by my statement. At least in a phone call I would have heard her tone of voice. Oh, well.

I wasn’t of the age where I grew up texting. I didn’t get a cell phone until I was 30 or so. My texting is very slow. It’s easier for me to talk on the phone.

I took “keyboarding” in high school — what had until a year or so previously been a typing class. I was very slow at the time, but have sped up with lots of practice. I’m good with typing on a full-sized keyboard.

idk. I guess it had to do with the timing of when certain social media came out and where I was with technology at the time.

I admire you for doing it, as I know I waste far too much time on it, and also it now makes me alternately angry and depressed much of the time (just reading the news items people share). On the other hand, I do stay in touch with many people on there in a way that would be otherwise difficult, and I enjoy all of the cat photos and videos, ha ha!

For me I had to define what it meant to stay in touch. Thats what I meditated on. I was sort of “waiting” for friends to update their status, instead of actively seeking if they had any plans going on, or even how they are doing. It was very passive and someone lazy on my part. I also thought a lot about human connection and what that means to me. These are the sort of things I had to ponder on my side.

I don’t have any social media, and frankly very few people contact me to stay in touch and vice versa. I think it’s great all the thought you gave to your decision.

I have finally come to understand that what currently works for me is personal interaction. It took me a long time to get to this point, and particularly so since sometimes that stance can be construed as opting out of relating. I was lucky enough to have a social media friend who decided she could not participate in our friendship any longer, and at that point I reflected upon my own needs aside from what I wanted to give. I understand that some people are happy keeping it casual, but ultimately I need to honor myself and what is meaningful to me. I feel that those who are committed to loving and supporting you will always be there, always show up, and if you’re not on fb or any other social media then you still have your tribe.

It’s mixed for me, too, and in the same ways. I’ve been limiting it really to following special interest groups, mostly. Most of my in-person ukulele activities have come from FB and I probably never would have found them otherwise.

I admire your decision to pull the plug on FB. If I were to pull the plug on a social media acct it would probably be Instagram since that is pure voyeurism for me and not much beyond that. But I agree about the getting socially lazy. I also had a really weird exchange with someone who I hung out with regularly over a decade ago (but haven’t seen in years) and ran into recently. I asked her how she’s been and she told me about a slew of serious health issues she had recently and didn’t I know because she posted all about it on FB?! I almost detected a hint of judgement or annoyance in her voice, like there’s an expectation that we should all be on there following and kept up-to-date and providing well-wishes and support.

After a very early (like pre-dawn) spritz of Mugler Cologne, I went digging around my perfume drawer for summer frags I’d overlooked and found L de Lolita. I’ve had this for ages but never really worn it. The opening is as salty as can be! We’ll see how the drydown goes… but so far – yum!

I’m wearing it with a shirt that remains laced with some perfume I wore at some point that absolutely will not wash out. I have no idea what it was, but it smells like something vintage – a genre I can no longer wear as my olfactory system’s gone haywire and they all smell the same – like wet dog or being smothered by a cat. Whatever it was, it seems to be here to stay :/

I’m in Chanel Eau de Cologne. The doc prescribed Flonase for my allergies, and it’s helping, but all I can smell is the nose spray for the first hour or so after I use it. Very relieved that health care won’t get in the way of sniffing. ? The EdC smells exactly as it should.

Thanks everyone, for the well wishes on Monday about my health woes. I went back to the doc yesterday for a shot of prednisone, so I’m much improved today, thank goodness.

Weather wise, another fairly cool, overcast day today in Houston! Yay!

I get a lot of ylang, tonka and bergamot. I am not an expert, but maybe I am getting some hay a few hours later.

I also get the “shot of milk” thing. Its the same note I get when I wear Lancome Oranges Bigarades. More of a tea scent with a shot of milk, than espresso.

It is a really pretty fragrance that works well with my skin. I bought the small bottle, used it, and then ended up buying the larger bottle.

I am wearing Fille en Aiguilles,
one of my all time favourites!

I think I mentioned it here before, but it reminds me of summer vacation in France in the Medoc region.
Sun on pine trees, small catholic churches (incense) and bold red wines.

The Goddess (or God?) of Sale is on my side this week :)

So I was in the perfume store today. I was not really looking to purchase, just wanted to try Un jardin apres la mousson.
Because I really like it but I dont have it. So I was at the Hermès section and I could not find it. Bummer….
Then I saw a table with stuff that said SALE SALE 30-50-70% off….and YESS there it was: ONE bottel of 50 ml for only 40 euro. Needless to say I could not leave it there ;-)

And earlier this week I also found a ba&sh top I had been eyeing for a long time but sold out in my size when sale started. And now it was there: my size, for half of the regular price. I reallyt like that brand but its quite expensive.

yup, heatwave in northwest of Europe as well.

Yesterday I attended a training and I saw quite a lot of tired, sleep deprived faces.
Our houses dont have airco. And there are still offices and schools with no (or sub par) climate control systems/airconditioning.
There even was a school in my region where they sent the children home after 12:00.

Child perfume oil from a sample. I don’t know if there’s a “right” way to apply perfume oil, but I usually add a few drops to my body lotion after I get out of the shower and apply it to my arms and legs.
The “kids” and I plan to go see Toy Story 4 either today or tomorrow. My oldest was born a year after the first one came out and it’s been 9 years since TS3 came out. We went to see that one on my middle child’s tenth birthday. She is in college now.? Time flies. We are going more for the tradition of it and I’m glad I could twist all their arms into going.

It kind of blows my mind that it’s already been 9 years since the last one. It feels like just yesterday I was just sitting on the couch at my friend’s house watching TS3…except that I was a freshman in college and that definitely wasn’t yesterday!

It kind of blows my mind too. My youngest was 4 at the time and got a little frightened during a couple of scenes. She’s 13 now, so I think this time we’re good.? I’ll be curious how it holds up. TS2 has always been my favorite, I love Jessie/Joan Cusack!

Totalyl understand the tradition of it. I was in preschool when the first one came out, and Toy Story 3 came out the summer before senior year. It was a unique experience, having this story we’ve known longer than we can really remember get revived to address very 18-year-old fears of letting go/new beginnings and whatnot. People my age had such a connection to it that we made a school dance Toy Story themed.

I’m gonna go to the new one today, too. Hope it’s good!

It really is unique, isn’t it, that it’s spanned so many years? I wonder if this will be the last one. I’m so glad to see all the characters back. I even read a story that they reached out to Don Rickles’ family to use his voice.☺️ It wouldn’t be the same without mr. potato head! I hope it’s good.

I don’t know! I wasn’t sure about this one – why run the risk of ruining a perfect trilogy almost 10 years after the fact? – but the reviews have been glowing, so maybe they’ll want to keep it up. My HOPE is that if they do more, they’ll keep the sequels spread out instead of getting greedy. Makes it feel less special if they do a new one every other year.

My SOTM is one of the rose soliflores that came in the Luckyscent sample pack I just ordered about a week ago. This one is my favourite so far of the batch of four: Les Imerdodables Rose de Jamal. Wow is it gorgeous. It’s like the most pure and fresh rose you’ve ever smelled. According to Luckyscent it’s a special Moroccan rose and the formula includes an unusual Moroccan mint in it, too, the “Naneh” mint. It’s refreshing and doesn’t have the sour aspect that rose scents can sometimes develop.
In other news I’ve been binge-watching the “Welsh Noir” BBC series “Hinterland” on Netflix and was up until 2 last night finishing an episode. It’s VERY bleak and slow and will not be everyone’s cup of tea but I’m loving it. The scenery is fantastic and I’ve been to parts of Wales several times so love seeing it on screen.

Hinterland is indeed dark, maybe about as dark as I am willing to go — or maybe even just a bit over that line. Ditto with Shetland, which is getting a bit darker every season. Both are so well done though!

It’s a bit easier going than Hinterland, but this seems to be a common pattern in mystery series these days…they keep having to up the ante. But in terms of of violence / dark subject matter, Shetland is somewhere in between Hinterland and Vera, maybe?

I love Shetland, but agree – it’s about as dark as I want to see. I find the ever increasing graphic nature of – well, just about everything – unsettling.

With that said, I and a friend have begun planning a Scotland trip for next summer!

Yes, the last season of Shetland was especially disturbing, and I found it unbingeable — I watched most of the episodes in 20 minute increments.

It is just as well that Hinterland does shorter series, and less often than Shetland.

I have tried the current version, it’s not bad at all! I think that one, Knowing, and Azuree all survived reformulations quite well.
Aliage is another matter. I prefer the vintage to current. :)

I’m wearing Monsoon by Dame Perfumery. I smell great in a mellow, spa-like kind of way. It oddly reminds me of a cross between Andree Putman L’Original and Dzing!, and I am all for it.

So how hot is it getting for you guys in the heatwave? It’s staying mid 80’s for me for the next week, and after today mostly cloudy. Today is very nice. My air conditioning is still out, so I’m thankful that I haven’t missed it yet. My Sotd is Shalimar Souffle.

We’re supposed to have similar temps tomorrow and Friday, but it’s been nice today. I live in a 1920s-era apartment building with no a/c, so I’ve been leaving the windows open overnight and closing up the windows and curtains during the day. That and running the ceiling fans near-constantly keeps it not-too-uncomfortable inside. Luckily I have a/c at work though!

Upper 80’s feeling in the 90’s. No rain in the horizon! I will start running the AC tonight just for a couple of hours and then the fans. I am already freezing at work, so I have no intention to feel 24/7 that winter came back! ??

Thanks for the kitty well-wishes yesterday! Her bloodwork was all good. He thinks maybe she has either mild asthma or something new is causing airway irritation. She’s been running around like a loon today and doesn’t seem the least bit concerned herself. He recommended coming back for a chest xray, but we decided to watch and wait for now. She hasn’t wheezed once since she went to the vet yesterday ?
Tonight’s agenda is getting peer-pressured into taking a samba workshop at Alvin Ailey. It’s open level but my only experience at Alvin Ailey was in the 90s taking a “beginners” contemporary dance class which was basically used as an exercise class for professional dancers. Needless to say, I sat out most of the class :/

Spoiler alert: This is a bummer of a paragraph. Spooky kitty has just had a bout of vomiting. Poor thing, It’s part of her IBD issues. It hadn’t been happening for a while after we switched her wet food, but the first time it did occur, it was like a punch to the gut for me. A reminder that her situation will not be easily or quickly resolved.

SOTD = Chanel Allure Homme Edition Blanche EDP

6 sprays, 6 hours. Going to op it to 8 or 10 sprays which I bet will last all day. You pretty much can’t OD or aphyxiate unless you spray into your nose which I know you won’t do. I would consider this a woody pudding. Lemon vanilla vetiver and sandalwood. Very smooth, lightly creamy.

I’m on the way home from having dinner with former co-workers. It was delightful to catch up! The daughter of one of them is in the bridal party of a destination wedding to the Dominican Republic, scheduled for the end of July. Given what’s going out there with people getting sick and dying, don’t you think the responsible thing for the bride to do is to change the venue?

My cousin was in a bridal party in the DR in May. She got violently ill as did another guest. My cousin recovered. The other guest ended up in the ER there, and has continued to have some issues since she’s been back.

This was before I’d heard anything. It’s been creepy since, seeing articles and reading stories of people who did not fare so well.

If she doesn’t back out, not even sure what precautions you could take. Is just avoiding alcohol enough? Who knows. Scary.

Apparently there is some problem consistently sourcing one or more ingredients and this has led to the decision to not make it anymore. I instantly ordered a bottle from LuckyScent and then received the out of stock message but that they thought they could fill it in the next week. Oh despair, too late, or so I thought. Adding.. the pictures they use can be a bit misleading. Last couple times I ordered, I thought i was getting older stock or vintage (based on the photos and size of bottle I was ordering). Both times it was a more recent version. Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed because I also had to pay for shipping and customs to Canada.

I haven’t had anything cancelled though, luckily. That would make me crazy!

Went commando much of the day Wednesday, then got the AERIN travel-size perfumes I’d ordered. I tried Linen Rose first, and liked that pretty well. (That was the blind buy.) After a shower, I tried Lilac Path, which I also liked. I’d sniffed it on a card on Saturday, but I’d sniffed several dozen perfumes before that, so it was kind of hard to tell.

The Lilac Path seemed to wear off after a while. I sprayed on Pacifica French Lilac before bedtime. I thought it was a rather different sort of lilac perfume, but also nice. If you haven’t found a bottle of the French Lilac yet, Jalapeno, we could meet up somewhere again and I’ll share. :)
