Monday scent of the day 6/17

Posted by Robin on 17 June 2019 321 Comments

Another Monday, and M.C. Escher's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am stealing Yasmina's idea: Hermès Myrrhe Églantine over a layer of Tauer Rose Delight body oil. Lovely.

Reminder: on 6/21, mark the solstice by wearing your favorite fragrance of summer (or winter) 2019.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Chanel Gabrielle. A lighter version of Coco Mademoiselle, which I have never liked. It is more wearable though, but I don’t need more than the sample that I just finished.

I felt the same about Gabrielle. I enjoy smelling CM on others, but can’t wear it myself. I also felt like 1957 was a lighter version of Eau Premiere.

Chanel latest releases are boring. Nothing different or interesting. However, I like Paris-Deauville, beautiful, classy, refreshing cologne.

I am also working hard now to reduce my endless collection. I was fortunate that a generous NSTer share some of her Deauville with me. I don’t have any plans to get it until I finish a couple of full bottles. It is on my shopping list though for later…

I really liked that one and the Paris- Venice one- really fresh, very elegant and I think a nice way to wear fragrance.

I like Gabrielle, but it goes sour on my skin after about a half hour. Coco edt does the same thing. I don’t know why, I don’t have that issue with any other Chanel.

I love the original Coco. It is a beauty! Fortunately, none of the Chanels go sour on me. Gabrielle didn’t have a good lasting power. After 4 hours, I can barely smell it. Almost gone.

I’m going to CP like crazy this week in all my summer favorites (even though it is due to be 70s and overcast.) Today is Goutal’s Rose Splendide, my favorite rose for summer, fresh and tart and green and reminding me of dirt road beach roses on Cape Cod when I was a kid.

ZOTM is Bat. I have tested just over half of the collection now.
Bat is so far mostly “banana” (never smelled a banana scent that smelled like the fruit), with a whir of metals buzzing lightly behind it. Points for being different. Not likely I’ll need more of it, though.

I spritzed the lightest half drop of T-Rex on last night and smelled like a campfire for the final 90 minutes of my day. I’d read others describing it as meaty, but the closest I got was BBQ.

Funny, I thought Bat smelled like straight-up soil. Like, really dark, damp, compost-y, great-for-gardening soil.

I would like that better, I think!
As it’s drying down, I’m mostly getting sweet (fake) fruits. I get hints of other notes, but sweet fruit is dominant.

Same! Lots of damp earth. Marjorie Rose, maybe you’ve found something to which you’re anosmic? I have a similar experience with Bacarat Rouge where my fiancé tells me it’s sticky tropical fruit sweet and I get a whole lot of cedar.

Le Labo Bergamote 22. The morning started out overcast, but I see the blue sky coming through. ?
I have a much needed haircut this afternoon. I’ve been going to my hairdresser for years and I do love the way she cuts my hair, but her prices keep going up and up.☹️ She’s up to $70, which seems like a lot to me, or am I just cheap? Lol. I’m tempted to try the Aveda institute downtown for a fraction of the price.

I don’t get it cut as often as I should, or what she recommends (every 6 weeks!) because of the price, even though I like how she cuts it. Gah, it’s a double edged sword!?

My place is also very expensive…about the same as yours. I am generally lazy and only go about 4-5 times a year anyway, so I just grin and bear the price. It looks better at 10 weeks after she cuts it than it does the week after the cheaper places I’ve tried….

I’ve generally had really good experiences at the Aveda Institute, and would definitely recommend it! I used to get my hair cut at the one in Ann Arbor when I was a broke grad student, and only ended up with a couple of dud haircuts out of the many times I visited. The part I didn’t like about it was that the students cycle in and out of the program so quickly that once you find someone you like, you can’t stick with them very long.

I stopped maintaining my angled bob and grew my hair out because I was sick of $100 haircuts. I don’t think you’re cheap. Sadly, where I am, $70 is low end.

Yes, this has been my logic for keeping long hair for years–I can get away with just trimming my own bangs for months at a time. However, because I get my hair colored and I have a lot of it, it’s more like $300 after tip. . . which sounds crazy when I type it out like that! I used to do the $12 walk-in thing a few decades ago, but hard to justify that when one “has to” look professional. . .

          *shakes head*

This is why I keep my hair at a medium short Afro. I can go to barber, get a deep conditioning treatment and a diffused blow out for $50 MAX. I color at home- just a rinse- and that is no more than $20/4 times a year.

I love that look! Sadly, my hair is not the right texture to pull it off. When I cut my hair short, I go from cute pixie to early Beetles/hobbit in about 4 weeks. ?

        • MissGoldsmith says:
          17 June 2019 at 10:21 pm

My cousin flies from SF/Oakland to San Diego to get her hair colored, because the colorist she likes there is cheaper, and with the difference in price she covers her Southwest ticket–and gets to visit her family, to boot. Seems insane, but can’t fault her logic.

Thankfully, I’ve never done the highlights thing, and my hair is just starting to turn gray. Hoping to get away with some at home henna treatments for a while before I have to start throwing money at it.

And no, the natural gray thing won’t work for me, at least not for another 20 years. The untreated gray of my aunts (who I resemble) is no glorious head of silver or salt-and-pepper, just an unfabulous gray around the edges. Oh, well!

I have been slowly going grey since I was 20, and I don’t mind it at all! The pressure for me is in acknowleging that how I look changes how parents, admin, and my students perceive and treat me. I gave myself a little “makeover” years back as an experiment, the first time I dyed my hair in a while, and it was so surprising to me how it changed things! So, I guess I’m paying for “respect.” ?

A friend of mine went salt-and-pepper really early, and it’s gorgeous, as if professionally colored. She’s a professor, so getting a little “gray hair” respect worked for her.

In my career, on the other hand, I do worry about looking “old” because tech around here can skew very young. Heck, when I was interviewing at 38-39 in some places I felt seriously out of place.

Ha! I only used to cut my hair like twice a year because $70 is on the low end here, too.

This thread is so foreign to me! I have pretty long hair that I get cut twice a year (when I remember!) for ~$20+tip at sad little places in strip malls. These prices are a good reminder that it would behoove me, financially, to never get my hair cut short.

Your current haircut price is about on par with what I am paying, madtowngirl. I will continue going to my current hairstylist for as long as she cuts hair. I just don’t do well with cheap haircuts… I look terrible every time I get one. I usually get a cut about 4x a year.

Sometimes it is the salon raising prices rather than the person. My husband and I used to go to someone at a good salon here, but her prices have gone up so much I changed to a cheaper place around the corner (and to a more simplistic straight chin-length cut). She has told my husband she’d cut his hair at her home for cheaper if he wants. He’s far more loyal than I am.

I expect to wear Jour Ensoleille in honor of SSS coming back. I’ve been hoarding my little travel spray. I also have an affinity of scents geared toward warmer weather, so this week CP has a lot of choices…

But…I’m waiting for a call from the drain cleaner guys…something is clogging the pipe in our bathroom for our tub/sink. The guys in the building tried, but couldn’t clear it, so we had to call in the professionals. Hoping they come today, because we have NO water at all tomorrow from 8 to 8. They’re replacing the roof’s water tank.

Habanita seems as if it should be cold-weather wear, all that powdery vanilla, but it works so well on warm sunny days because that slightly astringent tobacco just carves right through the softness and sweetness. I’m still amazed that it wasn’t reformulated into modern blandness.

Aedes de Venustas Pelargonium. I only have a couple of samples, but would probably spring for a decant if I could find it. I’ve always loved scented geraniums!

I saw the movie “Pavarotti” over the weekend and can highly recommend it even if you have zero interest in opera. We laughed and cried and the audience was on their feet cheering when it ended.

First let me say, I loved the movie too. He was larger than life. I was lucky enough to see him live twice. The old video recordings and family interviews were fascinating.

But second, I have to say that Ron Howard made very cheesy use of various arias to “cue” scenes of how Pavarotti was allegedly feeling at any given time. It was pretty wretched and drove me nuts.

Was craving iris this morning, so I’m wearing La Pausa. My sample is a dabber. I don’t mind the lasting power, but I would like a little more projection. Can anyone tell me how it does sprayed?

I’ve sprayed 8-10 spritzes from a tester, and didn’t feel like it lasted very long or projected very well. I’ve not dabbed it in comparison, though. It is very pretty.

Glad it lasts for you! It lasts fine for me, too. I’m usually good with minimal projection; I don’t care if other people can smell me, but I do want to be able to smell myself without pressing my nose into my flesh. I didn’t dab nearly so much as 8 sprays though. Will try putting on more next time.

I didn’t notice any difference in longevity with La Pausa sprayed vs. dabbed. How much I used did make a difference with both application methods.

    Good morning Y’all!
EXHAUSTED this morning, but in a good way! The hubs is back home after a 28 hour trip from Tanzania. Needless to say, his sleep and digestion are off big time! LOL I think he’s gonna need a few days of doing nothing to get back in gear. I’ve been doing laundry and such since the minute he walked in the door!

Before he got back, we had a birthday sleepover for my 15 yr old daughter, so I’m running on fumes today. Just 5 and 1/2 hours until I can go home….. :)

At least I smell nice in Elizabeth Arden White Tea…….

It truly was an experience of a lifetime! He says it’s gonna take him a couple of weeks to process everything and get his thoughts together about it. Going on safari was definitely the FUN highlight, teaching at the university was very gratifying, and the incredible poverty was humbling. He’s already been offered a spot to go next year, so we’ll see! He needs to get over being sick and sleep deprived before that sounds like a good thing to do! :)

We had to pop into Costco yesterday for a major grocery restock (since he was gone and 2 of my 3 kids were at Grandma’s, I didn’t shop for groceries much!). He was walking around the store, commenting on the sheer size of Costco and the amount of stuff we bought being such an incredible contrast to the way Tanzanians live. They survive day to day, hand to mouth…..

Oh wow. It will take a few months to be sure- the cultural differences, seeing the landscape and animals and teaching would ALL be mindbenders. He needs lots of rest and contemplation, to be sure!

And on Costco: Yes. My parents are from Central America, and I lived in Paris, so the ability to buy stuff in massive bulk is HUGE. Heck, I did not go into a Costco until I hit 29!

I thought it was especially interesting that Tanzania really doesn’t have any dairy production of any kind, so NO cheese, NO milk, NO ice cream in the little markets! And most folks don’t have refrigerators anyway, so they buy their meat and veg for the day and cook it the same day. Anthony missed cheese the most! The first thing he wanted when we drove away from the airport was a big pizza, extra cheese, extra garlic! LOL :)

          • Marjorie Rose says:
            17 June 2019 at 2:34 pm

Wow, not even goat products?! I spent a semester abroad in Madagascar, and there wasn’t much dairy, but there was a little. No refrigeration to speak of, for sure! Most folks couldn’t afford it, and there were roaming “greyouts” with unreliable electricity, in any case. So we bought everything fresh, too–buy your chicken or seafood alive, so you know that it won’t be spoiled! It’s a very *intimate* way of knowing your food. . .

          • JadainGA says:
            17 June 2019 at 4:39 pm

I’ll work out the cost but it will be for the exact amount I spent, plus the atomizer cost and exact shipping to your U. S. zipcode. I plan to use recycled packaging. I will split off 30 mLs in increments of 5 and 10 mLs. If interested, please send me an email with the amount you want. I’ll send an email once I close off the split Thanks.

Oh! I totally get that picture! That is dolphins bow-riding off a boat. It’s the view you get when you lean over the bow to take a look. I have hundreds of photos of that (mostly bad) from our recent trip to Baja. I sure wish I were there.

SOTD is Lush Grass. Grass, hay, nice. Doesn’t have that ‘ha, we’re going to make you WORK for the good part’ that many Lush scents have. To me, Lush scents have the opposite progression from most mall scents: mall scents tend to be fun up front and bleah later, Lush scents tend to be a rough ride up front and much better later. Or so I think :) Grass is being discontinued, of course.

I’m sampling Cuir Velours this morning. It started out as very promising, but then got sweeter and sweeter. Not what I was hoping for, but I’m glad I tried it. None of the Goodsir fragrances have been FBW for me.

    Hi All!

I am in the scent for summer: Floris Orange Blossom shower gel and Cap Neroli. Will be wearing this majority of the summer. Wanna thank Robin for introducing that Floris deal AND the announcement for Cap Neroli.

All of a sudden, the whole city is out and about- and I do so much around our little burg that I don’t rest during the weekend.

A big glass of homemade cold brew and AnjunaBeats on the system in the lab office.

Oh! I just checked the website! Wowzers! Okay, so my deal is there- the Orange blossom shower gel and soap. I see that it is $35- but STILL: you only need a little on a washcloth and the scent lingers, so it is really a great deal.

Yeah, if it lasts a long time, it’s a good deal IMO. I use Le Labo hair conditioner which is a luxury (though comparable in price to salon brands). My last bottle lasted me 6 months!! It’s so rich I only needed a tiny amount each time.

I’m staying commando today because yesterday I was covered in a bright red skin rash and I don’t know what caused it. I had to take 2 Benadryls and that made me conk out for the afternoon, but fortunately it helped. Might be shrimp, might be tomatoes, might be something I put on my skin, so I’m being super careful today. It was pretty unpleasant. Sigh. At least it’s not so hot out today here as it has been.

My latest batch of local strawberries is making my mouth itch. They are not Hoods but another type (Mary’s Peak?), that I’d never tried before. Seems odd that a varietal would make the difference like that. Allergies are so weird!

Ha! That’s a good idea. It’s a sectional so not an easy task to move it. Mostly I did it to retrieve my cats’ little sparkle balls they play with. They’d disappear and I’d just buy more. There were like 12 of them under there ?

When we moved, we found not less than 50 (no kidding!) pop bottle caps under dressers and such. The kitten likes to steal them from Mr. Spicebomb and chase them under furniture, in hopes of digging them back out again.

I’m having a bummer of a Monday. Last night right before bedtime, I walked into my solid wood coffee table full force. It was my little toe that took the hit. It’s quite bruised this morning and in worse pain than I’ve ever had for one of my walking into things incidents. So I’m heading to urgent care in a little bit to get it checked out. Going to wear Le Labo Bergamote 22 for some injection of happiness.

My coworker broke his pinky toe, and that poor guy hobbled around for what seemed like MONTHS! Really no way to set a broken toe (except maybe buddy-tape it), so it just has to heal over time. Try not to compensate with the other side of your body too much when walking….SO SORRY this happened to you!

It’s taped up now, and I’m taking the full day off to rest and ice it. Only good thing is getting to eat leftover pizza for lunch and watch The Crown. Our flight was to Dallas, and when we arrived we found out our flight to New Orleans (home) had been cancelled, along with many other flights due to bad weather. We finally got a flight home which departed about 11:30. Yay ! Glad to be home, but I am dragging so much today. I think I got to sleep about 4 am this morning.

It was a great vacation. The Irish people are so nice. Our tour guide had lots of stories of Irish history. Some funny. Some very sad.

We saw a lot of Ireland, which is great, but we were on the run a lot.

We had a few relaxing days in Mayo County, but the rest of the trip was hitting three small towns or sections of towns per day.

I hope you can try soon it Lillyjo. On the other hand I noticed a change that made it heavier on cumin around 2012 and that’s why I chose to purchase a vintage bottle, in really good condition. Diorella is often compared to Frederic Malle Le Parfum de Therese, and another perfume very like to my nose is Molyneux Quartz, also a fruity chypre really affordable which is very easy to love, I highly recommend it for summer months.

It’s a difficult note for me too. Yes, it changed Diorella so drastically, a pity, but if you can smell Molyneux Quartz it will give you a very good idea of Diorella without cumin, Lillyjo.

Due to popular demand, or at least one request, I am reporting back from the Vancouver Yaletown meet-up on the weekend. We started at a bar with doors open to the terrace, and despite trying remember to spritz outside, we were quite redolent. The bar staff remembered us well from the last time. It was mainly to try out favourites from people’s collections; other times we’ve met for an unboxing or to stroll through downtown stores.

After that, a few people continuing to a seafood restaurant a couple of blocks away. We definitely got in plenty of perfume talk, which is always fun.

Oh, and today I am wearing Heeley Blanc Poudre, a decant given by a kind Vancouver perfume pal.

SotD = Chanel No. 5 EdP + Tauer Wowilla Body Oil

A nice combo for my personal Chanel Monday. :D I tried this a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Thank you to Robin and Yasmina for the fragrant inspiration today. :D And gosh I love Myrrh Eglantine, a rose body oil on top sounds delicious.

First full week of summer break at my house. So far today I’ve taught one piano lesson, scheduled another students’ summer lessons, cleaned the bathroom (ugh!), and chatted with my daughter’s little parakeet. She’s a good talker and listener. Now I need to spend some time having fun. Maybe a walk on the beach before I go to my therapy appointment at 3:30 . . .

Daughter finished high school, college orientation begins next week. Looking forward to seeing her spread her wings.

Posting a little late on a wet afternoon that feels the same way that summer thunderstorms do. ☔

More sniffing commentary: in addition to the LUSH stuff, I also did a quick sniff of some Hermes scents that were at Sephora yesterday. I was cautious this time, and sprayed on paper strips rather than on skin. Twilly was rather nice, and I will probably test it on me sometime. The new Jardin (Un Jardin Sur La Lagune) fragrance wasn’t bad at first, but it did the same thing to me that Lucasai reported… it turned into floral soap in short order. NO thanks!

SOTD = Diptyque Tempo, from the sample/decant stash and hajusuuri. I might have one more wearing left, and then I will have thunked it. Definitely one of my favorite warm weather scents.

I wish Lagune had turned floral soapy on me, instead it turned unpleasant masculine. Skin chemistry is everything!

I am royally pissed off. NJTransit announced. a particular track for my train. It came on a separate track without an announcement. The next train (not for me) arrived with no announcement on a different track than was posted. So now instead of the original 15 minute wait, my total wait is now 45 minutes if that train comes on time. Unbelievable. ???. NJTransit has now screwed up the station announcement, arrivals and posted destinations. Sadly, there are no consequences for NJTransit, only fare increases when they ask for it.

Oh no!! I would be livid. Is there a “contact us” spot on their website where you (and no doubt a few hundred others) can complain or does it all fall on deaf-ears?

Not sure how such horrendous service is gotten away with and no one be held responsible.

Nope. No consequences for them or the MTA. They know most people have no other transit options. I’m sadly resigned to the fact that the service is pretty disgraceful and costs a lot now.

Oh goodness. I don’t know if sampling is a joy or a chore. Anyone else relate? Sometimes I’m excited, yet sometimes I dread all these choices. Since this morning’s Pelargonium, I’ve also sampled Splendiris and Lost Cherry. Splendiris is lovely, but I have the feeling that perhaps my desire for a powdery violet iris has been met. Mind you, I have so much iris stuff that I couldn’t begin to tell you what exactly meets that criteria. Sigh…
    L
Lost Cherry is a firm NO. On me, it’s a straight-up masculine cherry tobacco that brings to mind exclusive mens’ clubs, cigars, and a certain smug Wall Street smarmyness. Not my thing, but I understand the appeal. I know for sure that DSH’s Eau Cerise fulfills my desire for a clear, bright cherry fragrance unadulterated by almond, marzipan, sugar or tobacco. So I tried 3 things, and am certain about 2 of them. Now I just need to get through the next thousand or so samples…

I gave most of my samples away, a few months ago. Some tried, others I just couldn’t be bothered. I kept one small box of things I really wanted to try/wear and that’s it. I have soooo many bottles already, I decided it was better just to pass anything on that I wasn’t super excited about.

I’ve gotten very lax in my sampling over the past few years. Sometimes I “sample” by just tossing a whole mL into the tub with me when I take a bath. If I like it, I have the tube there to tell me what it was. . .

I also agree with cazaubon that it is OK to just let some of them go. Never heard of it? Never heard of the house? Opened the lid and wasn’t inspired by the first whiff? Next. . .

Thank you, Marjorie Rose, I really appreciate your support. I think that I need to focus on what works for me. I really enjoy smelling all the things, but when it gets to the reality of having such a boatload to try, I feel overwhelmed and stressed out versus excited.

I totally understand both wanting to try samples and thinking that it is a huge PITA. My interest comes and goes, like the tides. Sometimes I try something new every day of the week. Other times, all I want to do is wear my perfume favorites, often for multiple days.

Perfume should be something that is enjoyable no matter what, IMO. Don’t be afraid to follow your heart.

So late – still trying to get into a summer groove with my schedule. My dog was sick last night – kept wanting to go out – I think I got 3 hours of sleep when he finally settled. Today I sampled The Harmonist Guiding water, which I’m pretty sure came from an NSTer but I didn’t log it so I don’t remember who. I don’t really groove on aquatics so I’ll be passing it along…
