Thursday scent of the day 6/13

Posted by Robin on 13 June 2019 268 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in L'Artisan Parfumer Timbuktu, which I had not worn in ages. Wow, this stuff is good.

Reminder: on 6/14, we're doing the picture challenge, edition 4, part 2 (you can find part 1 here). Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Georgia O'Keeffe's Blue and Green Music. You can find snippets about this painting here and here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

On this rainy day everything is coming up roses:
    Rose d’himalaya tea
Rose calligraphy from a generous NSTer, this is lovely. My first time smelling. What do others think?
A silk top from a thrift store with big pink roses on it ? ?

This one is Henri Bendel, it has gold buttons down the front. The background is black with big pink flowers. It’s light silk fabric and gorgeous feel to it.

Nice! The art on the bottle of calligraphy Rose is beautiful. Does it smell similar to Rose Flash?

I love Calligraphy Rose, I find it reminds me of Amber Sultan but with roses! You smell great, , it’s such a bargain too, I would own a bottle if it came in smaller sizes.

Ha! I hate hair product competition. I really need to re-try that perfume. My recollection was that it smelled a little horse stable-ish? I smelled the whole line at once at TL so maybe I’m misremembering.

Still trying to finish off some older, near-empty decants before they evaporate — today’s thunk toward that end is Rose d’Homme. Which seems to have gone off a bit. :(

Tentative sample spritz of Rhinoceros today, for my ZOTM.
Immediate sniff was rubbing alcohol, “settling” into camphorous woods. Looked up the note “Armoise” from the list and that’s it! Learned it shares qualities with sage, cedar, and is “thujonic.” Which, then I had to also look up, means it’s a “thujone” which is a certain type of chemical, and they typically have a bitter scent. Huh.

Also, I just discovered that I have two sample vials that say “Panda,” and they don’t smell the same! I don’t have one that says “Hummingbird,” so I’m wondering if the Hummingbird I tested is actually Hummingbird in a Panda vial? Very curious.

Panda was reformulated in 2017, so you probably have both ther original and the newer versions! Too bad you don’t know which is which. Zoologist still has bottles of both versions available.

Was the reformulation a dramatic departure? One of them (in the Hummingbird card) is sweet, floral, with lots of honey. The other (in the Panda card) is green with tea notes and woods. . .

Sweet floral with honey definitely sounds like Hummingbird! I tested each version of Panda very briefly and with other perfumes, so I’m afraid I can’t speak to the differences.

I agree with TRF thatbsweet floral honey is Hummingbird.

            13 June 2019 at 2:03 pm

Thank you, both of you! Funny the Hummingbird ended up in the right “matchbox” but the wrong vial. . . Good to think I’ve actually sniffed it, though!

            13 June 2019 at 7:00 pm

And if you’re wondering which Panda you have, the old one had a ton of bamboo and musk, and the new one has some ozone and apple.

Posting early to thank every single person who posted such encouraging words yesterday. I think your well wishes (and my neighbour’s prayers) made all the difference, as… drumroll…my son has been accepted at this new school. This is a minor miracle. Suffice to say that when I told his teacher last week that we would be trying to move him, she said: “Good luck with that”. Anyhow, Cazaubon you gave me such hope stating that a new school changed the course of your life. That is exactly what I am hoping for for my son. To all the moms out there rooting for their fragile ducklings: OaklandFresca, Lillyjo and Tiffanie come to mind: sometimes we do prove all the doubters wrong. And it feels good!!!

I had not worn it since the 90s. someone I know was wearing it last summer so I asked her what she was wearing. I didn’t even have any scent memory of it which was surprising to me. It’s available on Lancôme’s website, I’ve not checked the dept stores. The dry-down is vanilla, it’s a big floral vanilla, and I think is a tiny bit like 24 Faubourg. Haven’t tried those two side by side yet.

Poeme and Tresor used to be always on hand for me. Loved them. However..Tresor now is so sharp it’s not as wearable. Poeme came harder to find for a while..at least where I was and before I had the innanet. I guess I just lost touch with it. I still love both so much more than those dreaded La Vie est Belles. La Vie is so strong…I may use to scare the mice away from my place lol.

Continuing this week’s green theme with vintage Silences. Not sure exactly *how* vintage it is, but that’s what the ebay seller claimed. I definitely smell the similarity with Chanel No 19, but I actually like Silences better – it’s more about the sharp greens (the good stuff!) with some soft. springy florals in the background, while No 19 is more about the powdery iris, I think.

Day Two of vacation, and am spending the morning in Prada L’Eau Ambree. It is definitely a sleeper, becoming more of a favorite each time I wear it, and Robin’s review is spot-on – starts out very reminiscent of Infusion d’Iris, and then morphs into more of a soft, woody, very clean/modern amber.

Spent yesterday in copious spritzings of Iroaz, after finally locating and consolidating three decants into one larger bottle with a better spray head. Heavier spraying brought out more beachy rose, which is exactly what I wanted from it. If I’d heard of Iroaz while Lostmarc’h was still making it, I would definitely have sprung for a FB. Just lovely. Happy Friday Eve, NST!

Hi all, SOTD is vintage Shalimar Parfum de toilette from an 80’s bottle. I’ve been wearing this to bed but decided it was time to enjoy it as I think the top notes are beginning to turn. Happy almost Friday!

I agree! For some reason, the newer versions (last 10 years) just don’t work at all on my skin.
I love older versions of Jicky also. Such a musky/skanky beast.

Woke up 5 minutes after I was supposed to leave today… longtime readers will know this is not the first time. The perils of using my phone as an alarm clock = I have to remember to turn the volume up when I set my alarm! I might have to get a regular one just for this problem. Anyway no time for scent, but when I got here my coworker – the one who brought in lilacs yesterday – had brought me my OWN bunch for my OWN desk, so I have absolutely no need for scent and who would want any with this amazing fragrance filling up the room. Ahhhhhh

Testing the new Chanel– Paris Riviera. So far? Pretty but not rocking my world.

Stopped into a few other high end shops yesterday when my son and I were having our Hermes adventure (sniffed about 10 Hermes perfumes I hadn’t sniffed before–all on paper. I thought the new one, Un Jardin sur la Lagune, was very pretty. Really liked Hiris (yep, I had never sniffed it before) and Rose Amazone, and the rhubarb one, and the geranium one). Also went to NM’s Guerlain counter and tried several in the L’Art et La Metiere and Les Parisiennes lines. Really liked Promenade des Anglais.

I know I am too old to be gobsmacked by the extremely wealthy, but I still am. In Hermes, a man was looking over about ten scarves, and wound up buying several of each… I’m guessing he spent over $10,000 on scarves alone, in less than 10 minutes. They were beautiful.

It is really interesting to see tourists here at the Portland Downtown Nordstrom purchase certain items and you begin to understand why certain vendors and stores have opened up in Portland. Tax free shopping is a huge thing, and watching a tourist from the PRC go ham on actual clothing from Chanel is amazing!

And yet. . . when I was planning for my wedding, I went looking for a unique dress. I was open to buying (repurposing, really) a designer dress–I wanted a non-wedding, wedding dress. Anyway, I had a terrible time finding creative and interesting options–apparently even the rich in Portland don’t wear fancy party dresses or gowns! No market for them at all, so I ended up buying online.

What I found is that there is a market for dresses and elegant dresses, even elegant day dresses, here in Portland there is like zero activities that call for evening gowns or party gowns unless you are a teen going to prom.

Agreed. My brother sings with Portland Opera, and when we go to his performances, we are often more formally dressed than perhaps 50% of the audience (especially the men).

I actually think it’s kinda great that folks “of all stripes” will go to opera, but I don’t get not treating it like a special occasion. I enjoy having the excuse to feel fancy.

My guess is part of it is that our “local” wealthy folks includes a lot of engineers, and they can be a pretty casual bunch, in my experience.

I have a beautiful, heavy silk scarf with a bold jazz scene on it that was given to me by Geraldine Ferraro many moons ago when she was serving on the UN Commission for Human Rights–really precious to me (although hardly a Hermes!). I love to wear it on occasions when I need to feel strong or powerful. I don’t wear it often, but when I do–watch out!

I say, if you want to wear the scarves, wear them! I bet they are stunning.

I do too—both love them and have a very old and still perfect Liberty scarf. I bought it on a splurge during my first Europe trip back in about 1983. It’s got a sort of Book of Kelly’s design to it in shades of browns, green, light yellow, and orange. My favorite scarves are from Etro and I own too many to confess. The best place to buy silk scarves, though, is in China! Wow! Amazing designs and prices were perhaps half what you’d pay here. Plus it was so much fun shopping when the sales girls didn’t speak much English but were really willing to help me make selections.

I have 4 Hermès scarves I think. One I bought years ago in Paris – I was on a mission that trip to buy a scarf, a purse, and fragrance. Then my husband gave me one for Christmas some years back, a friend got me one at a trunk sale, and I got one of the smaller ones that is white, black, gray and yellow. I love them all and consider them akin to jewelry. Those days are over, though, and I don’t wear them very much. I’m hoping I’ll wear them in the future as an attempt to be a chic old lady instead of my more natural casual self…. ?

I wish my hair would go white…. I got my hair cut yesterday from a new guy. He said he likes my natural color and wouldn’t do any color. The gray in my hair has come in strand-by-strand. People would pay a lot of money to get highlights this subtle…but in blonde….

    Hello to Thursday!

It has been astonishingly hot the past couple of days. It has gone down in temp but still hot- 86F(30C). Oy!

Am in Prim Botanicals Body oil and Lavanilla Summer Deo. Will spritz on Florida Water later to cool down.

All of my herbs are doing well EXCEPT the basil, which seems stunted. Sigh- I think I put them out way too soon this year- we had chilly nights.

Some of the tomatoes are struggling a bit but the majority seem fine. All the other hot weather starts are very happy.

It’s not too late to plant more basil! It germinates so quickly. I’ve had more luck with the globe-type, Greek basil, too. Although it’s not as easy to harvest (or quite as peppery in flavor).

Did you check for tiny sticky aphids? The leaves might need a wipe with a diluted detergent/ water mix? It might be worth a go. Maybe it would do better in pots inside so you can move them around, and slow down sun damage and water evaporation?

They do look a little nibbled on (which I expect) so I will do that and put them in pots. I think the real issue is that I jumped the gun and put them outside too early. All the other herbs are cool weather herbs- chervil, parsley, cilantro, borage, salad burnet- but the basil should have had warmer nights.

    https://www.mtromance.com.au/santal-spirit-100ml

I need help from the perfume sleuths. I am trying to get my hands on Santal Spirit , a perfume made by Betrand Duchaufour for the Australian sandalwood grower/distillery ( the biggest in the world, apparently) Mt. ROmance (Quintis group). This plantation is way up north at the top of western Australia almost at Northern Territory ( close to where the Hugh Jackman/Nicole Kidman film Australia was filmed)…a long way from any major cities. Mt Romance won’t ship overseas , which is the problem.

Another coooold day. Hat, gloves, torch and off to the woods! At least being in nature is good for your health though not necessarily your comfort.
    CP match is Interlude.

It cooled off a bit here but it’s still warm. It seems like summer is here to stay so I’ll switch out the winter clothes from the bedroom closet to the guest room. I did the “Backwards hanger” thing to see what I wore over the winter and there are definitely a few things going to Goodwill.
Despite spraying my Assam of India lavishly every time I wear it, I still haven’t got past the first row of elephants.

Wearing Zoologist Moth today and it smells so good! I’m doing housework and keep catching little whiffs. Our poor kitty has such matted fur on his back – it happens every spring when he sheds the winter undercoat – and there is cat hair absolutely EVERYWHERE. He goes in for grooming in a couple weeks to get his annual summer lion cut, he hates it but seems to feel so much better afterwards.

Definitely a squishy start to my day. The weather guys and gals have said that my area got over an inch of rain since midnight. There have been breaks in the clouds, and even some sun, but more storms are in the forecast for this evening. ?☂☔

It’s taken nearly all week to come up with an idea for the CP, but I now have a couple of options for tomorrow. This one was tough!

SOTD = nothing at all to do with the CP. I’m trying Replica By The Fireplace for the first time today. It smells like cinnamon rolls and wood smoke to me. Nice, but better suited to cold winter weather.

It’s surprisingly cold here today with a high of 55 and steady rain today. I had to turn on the heat this evening…in June. I hope Lillyjo is right about a mild winter because we’re not having much luck this year.

I’m not a fan of wood smoke due to allergies so have never tried BTFp. Must be a bit much today unless you’re a light sprayer?

A lot of places down here were in the upper 60’s today.

I’d call By The Fireplace a wood smoke gourmand… the sweet notes are about as strong as the smoke is on me. I am a light sprayer though… 1 or 2 spritzes is my typical application.

Anything that has a burning smell makes me anxious. Even burnt food, camp fires, the melting plastic smell. Cigarette smell doesn’t bother me, but a burning cigarette butt will. I have a huge fear of fire.

EB Fragile Violet from a decant my sister gave me. Cool, for a cool day. And trying to counteract the dusty smell as I tackle dust bunnies in the bedroom. Good grief. How did I let it get this bad? Contrary to popular thought, keeping a small apartment clean and tidy can be a bigger challenge than larger spaces.

And, I made (I kid you not) about 8 phone calls before successfully making an appointment with a new primary care doctor. And one wonders why I tend to become way overdue on visits… because it’s all such an ordeal. And I don’t do well with ordeals. (Although I am good at getting refunds/replacements from places like Chewy, who sent us a case of cat food in badly damaged tins….)

I’m wearing Azemour Les Oranges today during more disgustingly hot humid weather. After a tough session in PT, I met up with my ex to take Mom to the eye doctor. Handling her wheelchair and her as well isn’t possible for me and made worse in the broiling sun. Whew. Now I am icing my sore leg and drinking a good German Pinot Gris. Plus, my neighbors have invited me over for fresh red snapper on the grill! Things are looking up.

Thank you! I am having a ‘me’ day tomorrow, I think I will head out to my mall by myself to check that out and the Body Shop for that rose fragrance.

My hubby will be caddying for his brother tomorrow in a golf tournament. Last year I went, and besides getting near heatstroke from soaring temps, I was ‘shushed’. Even my hubs (his brother) got cr*p for not being quick enough with the clubs.
