Thursday scent of the day 5/30

Posted by Robin on 30 May 2019 182 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Mint Julep Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking community project points with Diptyque Volutes.

Reminder: on 5/31, for World No Tobacco Day, compensate by wearing something smoky (it doesn't have to smell like tobacco in particular).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Diam blonde SL today for no special reason.

What can you tell me about the mimosa scent. I saw it as part of a description of a scent. Any scents that are known for showing it off so I can get some sort of an idea in my head of what it might be?

And I don’t notice it so much in AlO. I notice it in the base of MCG Hanbury. It is not really my favorite note, I like it best as a bit player.

There were tornado warnings at home, not where I am now, but no activity last night. We don’t get many in general although one went right through our backyard once and took a tree down.

Such a challenge for me EVERY night! I always feel like that time in bed before sleep is ‘my time’ and I want to read, and read, and read but, there’s work the next day!

Thinking about it! Despite being such a beautiful perfume, the violet note is much stronger than the iris and for that purpose I prefer Misia instead.

    Happy Thursday!

Perfect morning for some Eau de Minthé by Diptyque. Lovely, zippy spearmint opening that transitions into a quiet, green/ish abstract hum, which is what I need for this too-much-coffee-ice-cream-last-night, dull headachey morning.

No tobacco for me today, I don’t think I have too many scents with that note! I went with Imaginary Authors’ Every Storm A Serenade from a sample. My first time trying it I didn’t like it much at all but today it’s growing on me. Nice and dark green.

A question: what’s your favorite scent that doesn’t seem to exist in perfume? Yesterday I was planting some petunias, and they have such a lovely and unique floral fragrance. I went over to google to see if there were any perfumes that used petunia as a note, and apparently there are none!

Petunias do have a lovely smell. My grandmother loved them, always had them in her garden.

I’m still searching for a realistic pink jasmine scent. I adore the smell of fresh jasminum polyanthum flowers, but it only exists in nature. Some things can’t be bottled.

Fringe tree! (But I suspect it would be like lilac and feel more prim as a perfume than as a flower.)

Also, freesia. I adore the smell of freesia in real life and “freesia” in perfume is a totally different thing.

My mom said more than once that our favorite fresh vegetable salad smells better that any perfume. :) This salad usually contains tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, scallion, garlic (or arugula), salt and sunflower oil. Lettuce is optional. While I do not think I want a perfume that smells exactly like that, I agree that juices of freshly cut vegetables and greens smell delicious.

I love the way salads smell, too! A candle in a scent like that might be really nice, but with perfume I’m not sure I want to smell too edible.

Arugula in particular has a great scent, as do carrots

I find that most tea scents don’t smell like tea to me, so I was always curious to find one that does. Then I found Schmidt’s deodorant in Green Tea Jasmine – and I both found an exact tea scent AND realized I don’t want to smell like that at all!
Another one is the smell of gorse.

I’ll have to sniff that deodorant sometime! I’m not sure I’ve ever smelled a tea fragrance that really smelled like tea, either.

I’m not familiar with gorse, but a quick google showed me that they’re very gorgeous

There is something in the original Blvgari green tea that makes me believe the story about Jean Claude Ellena going to Mariage freres to smell the oolongs. But agree, the smell of the real thing is better.

I use the Schmidt’s jasmine green tea deodorant and love the scent. I can’t use their regular line because they are too irritating. I’m not a huge jasmine lover but this works for me. I think we are polar opposites when it comes to scent. ?

I’m learning that many things I think I like, I don’t like, and vice versa! Ditto on the Schmidts – loved their regular line, loved the cedarwood smell, cannot use it (or any baking soda based deodorant).

I was wondering the same thing Stephanie-Anne! I noticed especially with Wave petunias. It may be the cross hybrids they use to give them their longevity. My purple ones are rhe most fragrant. A happy smell!!

It’s a white floral, but not a BIG white floral; at least, it’s staying ladylike on me (I’m a light applier). Notes include Mexican tuberose, magnolia, plumeria and marigold (and supposedly, copal); I don’t get marigold or copal/incense/smoke at all, the plumeria seems a bit more dominant among the florals to me. It’s very pretty, and isn’t wearing out its welcome (possibly because of the small amount I applied).

Pre-shower perfume is no 5 EDP. I don’t know what I am going to wear post shower. I am always amazed on how different all various versions of no 5 smells. I might just keep going with no 5.

SotD = Hiris + a few dabs of Purple Rain from a beloved sample

Iris all day loooooooong for me.

Hiris because it’s my go-to-scent for Thursdays.

Purple Rain because Prince is singing to me, courtesy of 94.7 FM The Wave, as I sit in my kitchen contemplating the gray skies. wondering should I go walk on the beach? The universe has spoken, the answer is yes. I always try to say yes to a walk by the water.

Trying out ELDO’s Vraie Blonde. Sprayed some on last night and was really taken aback by the weird herbally aldehyde opening. This morning I reapplied it post shower and purposefully did not sniff it for the first 15 minutes. It’s been calming down into something more traditional–the aldehydes give it that perfume-y perfume vibe. Interesting. I think it is going to take a few more wears for me to sort this one out.

I’m in my one and only tobacco scent today – The Body Shop Red Musk (discontinued). It packs a punch, so I’m just wearing a couple dabs of the perfume oil plus a careful spritz of the EDT under my shirt.

That’s good stuff! I’m going to spray some on when I get home. I find it has a tinge of their old Tobacco Flower scent, long discontinued. One of my coworkers really liked it and would’ve grabbed a bottle if it was still available.

I’m in Olympic Orchids Kilauea, which is based on the scents in the air after the volcanic eruption last year. From the description: “this scent mixes the smell of smoke, lava, live flowers, green and burning vegetation, and the unpredictable earth that gives rise to it all.” I really like it.

Has anyone heard anything official about what is going on with Parfums Delrae? I waited to buy a bottle of Wit because I was forcing myself too finish my decants first, but now I can’t find out available anywhere, not even the lesser known perfume shop that I was planning to buy from. However, someone on eBay is selling it for $200. ?

My husband just got me a sample of this last Friday – and he bought it from Tiger Lily Perfumery in San Francisco. I assume they still carry the scent, and I believe the might ship, too, if you’re not local.

It still might be worth it to call. In some cases a store might be in stock, but it won’t show on the website because it is less than a certain amt, to allow for any miscounted or theft of inventory.

        Thank you. :)

Later in the afternoon I went to visit a friend who is recovering from heart trouble. I figured it would be a fun low-key thing to do to play with Demeter fragrances, so I brought my samples of those with me.

In between coloring and reading, we took breaks to try the Demeter fragrances. As I had figured, Chocolate Chip Cookie was a big favorite. I tried Chai Tea. I could smell a little spiciness. After dinner, we tried a sample of Gingerbread. That was also a big hit.

So, super low-key, but that was fine. Besides those elaborate coloring books with geometric shapes and such, my friend had books and magazines about the Marvel (MCU) movies which helped me link more of the things I remembered from the comic books with the often altered versions that showed up in the movies. It solved the mystery for me about why I kept referring to the MCU Captain Marvel as Ms. Marvel, while remembering that there was another female Captain Marvel who wasn’t Carol Danvers in the comic books. Otherwise, I would have had to reread a bunch of X-Men comic books from the 1970s and 1980s, and read quite a lot of other Marvel comics from that era. lol

Add me to the list of sleepy people today. The cake yesterday turned out luscious and amazing, but maybe there was enough coffee in it to disturb my sleep? I don’t feel like I fell asleep properly until very late.

On the plus side, the sun is actually out. We’ve had a week now of grey days with sunshine only after 5pm. It’s been cramping my style! Hard to convince myself I’m on “vacation” when I’m stuck in the house to stay warm. I look forward to getting some sunshine in my eyes today.

No SOTD, yet, but I’ll likely grab another sample to try. I’ve worked my way through all of the Blackbird scents, and I don’t think I’ll be using that coupon. Nothing really spoke to me. ?

I *am* considering finally buying Black March from CB I Hate Perfumes. Thing is, I don’t know if I’ll actually wear it, or if I’m just buying it because I want to share it with people to show how amazing and weird fragrances can be. . . which impacts what size bottle I’ll likely buy. I think I’m decided to buy the water perfume, but I could be talked into the absolute, if folks have strong feelings about it. Let me know, if you do!

In my experience the water perfumes don’t age well. They turn into, well, water. Go for the absolute :)

On other topics, I’m still trying to teach my cat about his new magic feeder. He hasn’t yet learned that the ‘whirrrr’ sound means new food is appearing. (He’s not the sharpest furry I’ve ever had.) More annoyingly, he’s still waking me up at dark o’clock because apparently, having dry food available is Not Sufficient, he wants his yummy yummy canned food. Grrrrrrr.

Haha! My kitty sits in wait for his feeder to go off, head underneath the shoot in anticipation!

Are you transitioning your kitty to a new dry food at the same time, or is it just that it used to get both and now is only getting the dry? I think it can be tough to switch foods for a kitty, and some transition time in typical (mixing them together for a while, etc).

I’ll just add to Robin’s excellent review that it has one of the best citrus openings, that it wears to a sheer amber (love the opoponax in it), can be worn in warm weather and that it’s much more unique that one would think, I like it more each time I’m wearing it.

I, meanwhile, the wimpy Californian, decided not to go for a swim today because the high around here was 69 degF, which seemed a bit too chilly for a swim in a pool heated to 70 degF.

OMG the past coupla days at work have been madness. Everybody with hair-on-fire. I think I may have just resolved the worst of the shrieking emergencies… fingers crossed.

Joining the yawning crowd. The power company turned off our power at 7am yesterday. It was supposed to be on again at 6pm… nope. So we fired up the generator, made dinner, had our evening, still no power, shut off the generator, went to bed, then: discovered that our new alarm system doesn’t cope well with no power. Once its batteries ran down, it kept saying: “Warning! No internet connection!” Well, duh, ’cause NO POWER. At 2am we couldn’t figure out how to shut it off so it got wadded up in a coat and stuffed in a closet. Ah the joys of technological advances.

I’m getting a rather late start today, sampling DSH Musc Eau Natural. It’s very nice, and not a typical musky, animalic “skanky” perfume. I can smell the Musc, but on me it’s more of a greenish, vegetal fresh Musc, if there is such a thing.

Agreed – and I am just as guilty as most of this. I think I tend to privilege the unconventional or atypical when it comes to perfume, but sometimes, one wants the quiet contentment of a pretty, easy to wear scent, as opposed to the thrill-inducing joy of a fantastically multilayered and gorgeous one.

I’m wearing Berdoues Assam of India again today. It’s becoming a scent I reach for on warmer days.I’m almost out of my discontinued favorite L’Occitane Bergamot Tea in the solid so am glad I found another tea scent that is still available.

One of the Martin Margiela Replica scents is supposed to be a bergamot tea, but I have not tried it (and have not really loved that series) — Tea Escape.

I have tried Tea Escape and it was just ok,but not a favorite. The green tea note leans more toward a matcha tea which on my skin has a bitterness. It’s definitely worth trying. It may work on your skin.

I’m chiming in late. Today I tried a combination of By Kilian Smoke for the Soul and Tom Ford Tobacco Vanilla. The TF overpowered the Kilian, and was potent and sweet, but made me wish I had chosen Havana Vanilla instead. I might wear it tomorrow.
